- Dom Michelot Bourgogne Blanc 2014 Product #31111 (In Stock)
Jean-François Mestre and his son, Nicolas, make their Bourgogne Blanc with all the care of a fine Meursault – which it nearly is! The grapes grow in a half-dozen small plots within the commune of Meursault tucked between the village and the RN 74 road running north to Beaune and south to Puligny-Montrachet. Just as in their 1er Cru Meursault vineyards, farming is organic (in conversion to biodynamic), with a mixture of grassy cover crops (to force the vines to compete for moisture and nutrients) and plowed rows (putting that cover crop back into the soil). Harvest is by hand, sorting careful, and pressing light into French oak (all used).
The forward, ripe, and ready-to-love character of the 2014 vintage shines through here, starting with a generous nose of fresh peach, yellow apple, pear, and lightly buttered and toasted hazelnut. Rich and broad and creamy in texture, the palate delivers ripe peach and pear fruit with more buttery nut flavors leading to a lightly nutty spice and citrus finish.
- Dom Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes 2010 Product #31571 (In Stock)
Michelot’s slice of the great 1er Cru Charmes features 50-60 year-old vines right in the middle of the vineyard. A nicely warm site and the shallow limestone and clay soils over broken limestone rock tends to push Charmes towards a ripe, round, texture. When first bottled, Michelot’s 2010 Charmes was anything but – as you’ll see from the notes below it was lean, dry, and full of minerally drive. Time in bottle has done wonders, giving this fantastic richness and humongous length but with all the minerality and lime zest acidity you could hope for. A stunner with 10+ years in front of it. Very limited.
“Bright, light yellow. Lemon zest, hazelnut, macadamia and musky vanilla on the nose. Dry, brisk and energetic, with soil-driven flavors of lemon and minerals. Much more backward than the village offerings, even a bit youthfully spiky today. The finish is dry and savory, with a lingering lemony perfume. This wine needs time to fill out and harmonize. (from 9/2012 note)” Vinous (Tanzer) 91+ points
“A cohesive white, tight and linear in profile, dense with peach, apple, lemon and spice flavors. Vibrant and persistent on the long finish, showing hazelnut and butter notes. Drink now through 2020. 600 cases made.” Wine Spectator 94 points
- Dom Michelot Meursault Narvaux 2014 Product #31572 (In Stock)
Meursault's Lieu-Dit vineyards are kind of a halfway step from "village" to 1er Cru status, and Narvaux is one of the best. Perched on rocky soils high on the hill above 1er Cru Les Genevrieres, Narvaux gives classic Meursualt richness without heaviness and good energy with no hard edges. Michelot's is about as fine as Narvaux gets.
“Pale yellow. Peach, orange, spicy oak and grilled almond on the nose. A distinct step up in energy and lift from the Clos Saint-Félix, showing much more mineral spine to its lightly saline flavors of citrus fruits, hazelnut and spices. Very Meursault but in a firm style, with the backbone to evolve gracefully. Finishes with sneaky orange zest persistence.” Vinous (Tanzer) 90 points
“High-pitched, offering toasted sweet spice, lime blossom, citronella, mineral and nut oil aromas and flavors. Well-defined, intense and taut, with a stingy finish for now, but the potential is there."Wine Spectator 91 points
- Dom Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2014 Product #31573 (In Stock)
This blends fruit from two small plots of Merusault's greatest vineyard. One from just to the south of Clos des Perrieres is loaded with limestone and gives richness and depth. The other from the upper slope (looking down into the Roman quarry that gives the vineyard it's name) grows in thin soils over hard rock, giving vibrancy, energy and minerality.
Even in the forward 2014 vintage, this is quite young but enormously concentrated, complex and promising with huge richness and finishing length. Give it an hour of air right now with lobster or scallops or let it develop for a while – if you can wait!
“Pure but reticent perfume of citrus fruits, pineapple, crushed rock and flowers. Sappy, densely packed and seamless, offering lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its pineapple and crushed stone flavors. More refined than the previous premier crus here and much longer and smoother on the rising finish. In an adamantly dry, mineral-driven style, but there's already a lot going on here. This wine softened nicely with air, showing attractive sweetness of fruit without losing any of its energy or back-end lift. Drink 2019-2027” Vinous (Tanzer) 92 points
“A floral-, apple- and stone-flavored white, boasting a tightly wound structure and a tightfisted finish. Hints of spice emerge, but overall, this needs time to strut its stuff. Best from 2019 through 2027. 2,100 cases made.”Wine Spectator 92 points
