Villa Jolanda Prosecco 200ml Individual Bottle Product #23927 (In Stock)
Villa Jolanda Prosecco 200ml Individual Bottle Villa Jolanda Prosecco 200ml Individual Bottle

Villa Jolanda Prosecco is made from 100% Prosecco grapes grown in the hills north of Treviso.  Grapes are hand-harvested, chilled in the vineyard, and given a low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruit.  The wine features lovely aromas of white flowers, orchard fruits, and a touch of mineral.  Lightly sparkling with very pretty, small, bubbles, the wine is full of flavor - peach, ripe apple, lemon zest, and a nice mineral streak.  Fruity and crisp, the wine finishes with a touch of mineral and yellow apple.  A fantastic wine to keep on hand for everyday celebrations or to stock up on for Holiday parties.  Delicious!

Riebeek Cellars Rose 2012 Product #27010 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Rose 2012 Riebeek Cellars Rose 2012

While red versions of Pinotage – South Africa’s distinctive crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault – are a bit funky and, for most, an acquired taste, you won’t have to work very hard to fall in love with this dry Pink version.  Riebeek has been growing grapes and making wine in South Africa’s Swartland region since 1941, making them an old-timer in a region that’s exploded with wineries in recent years.  The weather and soils in this part of the Western Cape are Mediteranian, very similar to Provence and Bandol in France.  Not surprisingly, olives thrive here along, of course, with wine grapes.

The 2012 Cape Pinotage Rosé is picked right at the beginning of harvest to preserve freshness and acidity.  After crushing and a short maceration to extract a pale, shimmering, pink color, the wine is fermented dry in stainless steel and bottled and shipped young for immediate enjoyment.  If you don’t see the bottle, you’d swear this was from the hills overlooking St. Tropez and the Mediteranian Sea.  The aromas are redolent of fresh strawberry and tangy cherry fruit accented by a dash of crushed Provencal herb.  Nice body here (despite the 13% alcohol), the berry/cherry fruit and herb get lifted by a note of orange peel freshness.  Long and mouthwatering on the back with just the right amount of chalky mineral and zingy acid.  A fine, versatile, delicious dry rosé to enjoy by yourself or – at this price – to share with a crowd!

Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011 Product #27038 (In Stock)
Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011 Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011

We have no idea how such a delicious wine made from 30 year-old, dry farmed, Tempranillo vines in La Manacha could be quite this inexpensive…but we’re glad it is! This is real, honest, “vinous” wine, packed with cranberry and black cherry fruit, accents of licorice root and cracked pepper, and long, smooth and refreshing on the finish.  A perfect wine for big celebratory parties, weddings, back yard cookouts, or just sipping all on its own.

“Bright ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by black pepper and candied rose. Tightly focused red berry flavors are underscored by smoky mineral and floral qualities. Emphatically fruity and silky in texture, with a smooth, gently sweet finish.”International Wine Cellar 88 points

Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2011 Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2011

Here's the kind of value that made Spain famous in the international wine world but seems to have vanished in recent years. And, the 2011 is event tastier than the 2010!  It's 100% Tempranillo aged 3 years in American Oak, and it delivers loads of honest, unconfected, tangy blackberry and fresh tea leaf aromas and flavors with a juicy, zingy, finish.  A fine party or backyard cookout bottle at a very compelling price.

Chabert Chardonnay Vin De Pays D'oc 2011 Product #25874 (In Stock)
Chabert Chardonnay Vin De Pays D'oc 2011 Chabert Chardonnay Vin De Pays D'oc 2011

Another fine vintage – that makes 3 out of 3! – for our best-selling Chardonnay ever!  As in the past, this all stainless steel (no oak!) beauty comes from a pretty vineyard deep in the South of France.  And, as in the past, you’ll find plenty of yellow apple and peach pit fruit flavors and aromas with accents of lemon zest, pear skin, and just a touch of chalky mineral.  The wine is just a touch richer and rounder this year than last, with a note of candied pear in the middle and pretty peach blossom and golden apple on the soft, easy, finish.  A wine sure to appeal to both "Old World" and "New World" palates, and a fantastic value.

Mas De Chabert Roussanne 2011 Product #26442 (In Stock)
Mas De Chabert Roussanne 2011 Mas De Chabert Roussanne 2011

I’d love to wax eloquent about this producer, but we'd never heard of them before we started carrying the wine and can’t find anything about them online (at least in English).  The wine, though, speaks for itself.  It’s made from 100% Roussanne, a key white wine grape in the Rhone Valley and South of France that has a tendency to give heavy, even flabby, wines.

The 2011 Mas de Chabert, though, shows another side to this variety!  On the nose loads of peach and apricot fruit and a little peach blossom and a touch of lemon oil.  In the mouth more stone fruit (apricot especially), peach skin, lemon rind, and a bunch of other cool flavors swirl around in a vibrant, zippy, package. A perfect wine to drink on its own or with poultry or fish.

Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2011 Product #26774 (In Stock)
Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2011 Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2011

Opens with pretty aromas of ripe red plum and red berries with a hint of violet.  In the mouth ripe and round but very fresh the loads of black raspberry and red plum fruit at the core with accents of violet, blood orange, and even a dash of coffee.  The marvel here is how all the ripe fruit stays so fresh and refreshing as the bright acidity and light tannins provide perfect support and notes of juicy fruit and violets linger nicely.  Pulls you back for another sip and then another glass.  A great everyday red to serve on its own or with pretty much anything (meat, fowl, richer fish or roasted veggies) you’d want to eat on a Tuesday night!

“Another 100% Garnacha cuvee, the 2011 Monte Oton comes from hillside vineyards planted at an elevation of 1,200 feet on the southern side of the Moncayo mountain range. No oak is used in this totally naked red. It emphasizes minerality and fruit, as evidenced by its crushed chalk-like notes intermixed with sweet kirsch, lavender and licorice. This fresh, medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, hedonistic as well as intellectually challenging wine should drink well for 2-3 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011 Product #26560 (In Stock)
Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011 Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2011

Cortese is best known as the grape of Gavi, but it's grown seldom as interesting as this! This wine is surprisingly complex on the nose, although we struggled to put it to words. Think of smelling an herbal infusion with lemon, honey, and lavender on a sunny day. (Fanciful, but it's the best I could do!) In the mouth the wine is clean and crisp with notes of lemon, bees wax, and fresh herbs complicated by something hard to describe but vaguely grapefruity. finishes clean and fresh with just a hint of green apple. this is going to be our "go to" for picnics, cold seafood salads, and simple chicken dishes. A whole lotta wine for the money.

Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2011 Product #25920 (In Stock)
Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2011 Martinez Lacuesta Blanco Rioja 2011

This is 100% Viura grown in selected sites across Rioja.  The ripe grapes are pressed and the juice goes into all new barrels – a mixture of French and American oak and acacia – to ferment and rest for 3 months.  After that, the wine moves into stainless steel to complete its maturation, retaining freshness and verve to go along with the light oak influence.

Give it a sniff, and you’ll be rewarded with pretty springtime aromas of peach, pineapple, and almond blossom.  Take a sip and you’ll discover a round, creamy, textured wine that’s bursting with zesty fruit and juicy acids.  After you swallow, you’ll notice the fresh flavors lingering nicely as a hint of honey and bitter almond emerge at the end.  Almost too easy to drink by itself for refreshment and fun, you’ll love how this enhances warm weather favorites like fresh fish, grilled mushrooms, or marinated chicken.

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2009 375ml Product #25878 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2009 375ml Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2009 375ml

"Vivid ruby. Complex aromas of red and dark berries, Indian spices and violet, with slow-building smokiness. Taut and focused on the palate, offering lively bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors that pick up weight with air. Juicy and nicely concentrated Cotes du Rhone with strong finishing punch and lingering spiciness."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"There are 3.5 million bottles of the 2009 Cotes du Rhone red, which represents an amazing value. A blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre, it comes primarily from the Plan de Dieu (Plain of God), which is situated northeast of Chateauneuf du Pape. This tank-aged, deep ruby/purple-colored, concentrated, fleshy, medium to full-bodied, supple offering reveals plenty of pepper, kirsch and black currant fruit intermixed with a notion of flowers. It is meant to be consumed during its first 2-3 years of life although I have tasted 10-year-old bottles that are still holding together."Wine Advocate 90 points

Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2011 Product #25281 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2011 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2011

The 2011 Gmork actually has a bit more minerality than the Three Star 2009 did along with a touch better richness and definition.  Even fresh off the boat in November, 2011, The Post could already see the quality:  “The Anton Bauer Gmörk has been one of my favorite bargain whites for years; this vintage arrives early because Austria experienced a warm growing season with an early harvest. The wine offers delicate aromas of white flowers and orange blossom, and limpid minerality. It should develop a bit more complexity over the next few months.  Three Stars."

We agree with importer Klaus Wittenaur: “Best Gmörk to date!! This is what good GV should taste like. Aromatic on the nose, a beautiful play of perfume, apple, tropical fruit and acidity. All the aromas follow through on the palate and then the wine has a dry clean finish with a touch of white pepper. There is no other single vineyard Grüner on the market that can beat this taste and price-best value!!!"  Grab a case or two now at this special price and enjoy it all spring and summer long with crunchy salad, crisp garden vegetables, grilled sausages, or even fried chicken.

Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2011 Product #26047 (In Stock)
Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2011 Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2011

The motto here is “Gascony seen by a feminine point of view.”  Other than the fact that the estate is led by women, I’m not sure what that really means, but this is a heck of a delicious white for summer sipping.  The blend is 80% Colombard – the main white grape in Gascony – for bright acidity and round texture and 20% Sauvignon Blanc for a big burst of fruit and touch of fresh hay.  The fruit flavors coat your palate with ripe green melon, golden apple, and orange/tangerine flavors set off by lemony acids, a dash of minerality, and a whiff of fresh cut grass.  A great summer sipper that delivers Sauvignon Blanc-like flavors that have been softened and tamed by the Colombard.  Yummy.

Dom Vougeon Brouilly 2011 Dom Vougeon Brouilly 2011

Nicely ripe aromas of black cherry, crushed black raspberry, cocoa powder, licorice and nutmeg open the show and get darker and richer with a little air.  In the mouth, it’s fresh and juicy with flavors of black cherry and strawberry/rubarb pie in the middle and notes of powdered baking chocolate, and tangy citrus skin underneath.  Finishes with some nice and juicy dark berry fruit and just a hint of clove and citrusy acidity.  Pretty yummy, actually, and even better with a light chill and a bite of grilled sausage (hot dogs, anyone?) or a burger.  Kind of a silly wine, but an even sillier price!

"Ideal for burgers off the grill or other summery foods, this delightful Beaujolais cru is a terrific “bistro wine,” meaning a gulpable red by the glass or the bottle. It will fuel conversation, not dominate it. Better have a second bottle handy.”  Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post
