Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2011 Product #27497 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2011 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2011

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

With another year’s aging, this has just gotten better, richer, and more delicious.  The aromas are pretty and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry frit and hints of dark chocoalte and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.

“Bright purple. Exotic aromas of dark berry preserves, plum and dried flowers Supple and jammy on the palate, offering plush black and blue fruit and a hint of white pepper. Finishes with soft tannins and warm, lingering blue fruit and spice qualities.” International Wine Cellar 88 points

"With a hint of rubber and asphalt, the bouquet on this value wine is generous and topped with blackberry and dark plum aromas. The palate is grabby, with clampy tannins and black-fruit flavors mixed with chocolate and spice. The earthy, lightly herbal finish with rubbery nuances is nice."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

As soon as we tasted this fantastic value, we knew many of you would love it. From first sniff to last note of the finish, its a juicy, red currant and cherry Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit of spice, a hint of herb and just the right dusting of dark chocolate.  The round texture, generous flavors, and grape sweeet-tart and spiced cherry finish make it easy to pair with food and a great Tuesday supper and Saturday party red.  If you enjoyed past red values like Owl House or Chilensis, this could be your next big thing for not many bucks at all.

Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Product #27960 (In Stock)
Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013

As much as we love Argentina's straight Malbec wines, they can get even better with the help of a blending partner.  In the Los Ailos, Syrah plays that role, taking what would have been a pleasant, juicy, red to a whole new level of richness and flavor.

The 2013 Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry and black plum.  Then, in the mouth, it's ripe and juicy with plenty of fresh black fruit, a little leather, and a nice touch of minerality.  It's balanced and fresh with a fine spread of ripe tannin on the back promising good things at table.  Very nice value.

Here's the kind of value that made Spain famous in the international wine world, but that seems to have vanished in recent years. Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Product #28207 (In Stock)
Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013

Back before Aussie Shiraz started to taste the same - thick, heavy, and laboring under a load of over-toasted oak - we used to find great value reds like this with ease.  Harder now, but still very much possible as one sip of the fresh, clean, and just 13.9% abv Gossford Shiraz shows.  This is all about ripe Shiraz fruit - black grape, black plum, blackberry, cherry and more - with great lift from juicy fruit acids.  The well-moderated oak treatment (6 months in French and American barrels) adds attractive spice and smoke notes and rounds off Syrah's rough edges without getting in the way of drinking fun.  "Fun" is really what this fantastic value red is all about.  And, at this price, you can share it with a crowd or just enjoy the fun anytime by itself or with everything from grilled beef to pizza.

Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012 Product #28582 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012 Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012

On tasting this, our first thought:  What a great summer red!  It’s full of fresh, thirst-quenching, strawberry and raspberry fruit with just a touch of oak spice and smoke from the few months it spent “warming up” the new oak barrels to be used for longer-aged Crianza and Reserva Rioja wines.  Drink it with a light chill for maximum refreshment or let it warm up a bit to sing with burgers and hot dogs off the grill.

"The 2012 Lopez de Haro Tempranillo is pure young Tempranillo used to break the new barrels for three to four months, showing the purple color and the exuberance of the young fruit with strawberries, raspberries, flowers and red licorice notes. A pleasure to drink slightly chilled with charcuterie. Refreshing and a real bargain.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Product #27994 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE

Half Bottle!  Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element."Wine Spectator 89 points

Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Product #27594 (In Stock)
Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006

Last Call for our best-selling Bordeaux ever!  It's a (mainly Merlot) Right Bank Bordeaux that’s perfectly ripe at just 13% and perfectly mellowed from time in barrel and cellar. On first pour, both the color and aromas are still show very youthful, with primary scents of fresh red currant and black raspberry accented by notes of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and spice. With a little air, the aromas get darker and richer, showing off this wine's beautiful ripeness.

Seven years time has softened the palate to a silky smooth texture and allowed the pretty berry and currant fruit to come forward.  You're starting to find notes of age here as earthy tobacco, fresh mushroom, and cedar peak out, but the overall thrust is still behind the juicy, fresh, fruit.  Very light, sliky, tannins come up at the end to provide classic Bordeaux structure for food – especially that classic pairing of maturing Bordeaux and lamb!  You can enjoy this now while dinner is in the oven and will be delighted to keep on quaffing it until all the clean-up is done.  Fresh, fruity, delicious, and attractively packaged in an authentic Bordeaux wood case – a fantastic value!

Mundo De Yuntero Tempranillo Syrah 2012 Product #28047 (In Stock)
Mundo De Yuntero Tempranillo Syrah 2012 Mundo De Yuntero Tempranillo Syrah 2012

A tad bit better and more fun than the Wine Advocate write-up suggests, this charming La Mancha red bursts with blackberry and plum fruit and just touch of complicating spice.  A fruit-forward, fun, wine that's easy to drink and ready to play at your next party or casual meal.

"The 2012 Mundo de Yuntero Tempranillo comes from Cuidad Real from organic vines (including 15% Syrah) and sees no oak contact. It has a clean, fresh boysenberry and small dark cherry nose, while the palate is fleshy and generous on the entry. It finishes a little “generic” but it is a commercially sound Tempranillo at a bargain price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Product #28255 (In Stock)
Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012

The Recorba Ribera del Duero Tinto is an example of what happens when you get Tempranillo all the way ripe and then let it show it’s colors without any wood at all.  Big aromas and flavors of red plum, black cherry and raspberry take center stage with accents of natural spice, warm stones, and a touch of exotic sandalwood.  Since Dave McIntyre reviewed it last November, it’s settled down and opened up, but still represents a huge “bang for the buck” Tempranillo to enjoy by itself or with pretty much anything you’d put on the grill.

Warning: This is a gateway drug that might get you hooked on the earthy Tempranillos of Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, which typically cost $20 and up. Ribera fans will want to stock up and give their credit cards a break. When I first opened this wine, it was a bit rough-and-tumble, in a good way; two evenings later, it had settled down but was still vibrant and delicious. How often can we say that about a $10 wine?”  Washington Post **1/2

Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008 Product #28952 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008 Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008

Wow. Just wow.  A stunning red that's easy to sip and has the stuffing for big food.  How did they make such a fantastic wine at such a low, low, price?

"The 2008 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza is a blend of 93% Tempranillo and 7% Garnacha aged for 18 months in French and American oak. It has a mellow bouquet of dried herbs, terracotta tiles and dusky black fruit that is very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin: tart red berried fruit, laced with tobacco and dried herbs on the dry, crisp finish. This is a superb classical Rioja Crianza. Drink now-2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012 Product #28489 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012 Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012

You might want to see if pigs are starting to fly – because Doug is actually recommending a wine made from Pinotage!  This cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir created in 1941 and grown pretty much exclusively in South Africa is usually too earthy, vegetal, chemical….whatever; it usually doesn’t taste very good.  But here the combination of 80% Pinotage and 20% of a very obscure blending grape called Mocha ends up tasting like really ripe Gamay.  Not sure how they did that, but I am sure that you’ll love the big, plump, raspberry, fruit cake, dark chocolate, and subtle leather aromas and flavors and the juicy, mouthwatering, bite of cranberry at the very end.  A great wine to chill down and enjoy from the time you light the grill right on through washing up after your guests have left.  Really fun stuff.

“Light-bodied and direct, with bitter cherry, blood orange and singed cedar notes, delivering a racy, taut feel through the finish.”Wine Spectator 86 points

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml

As always, a lovely value!

"Admirers of the so-called “little” wines of Bordeaux will no doubt be familiar with Recougne, which has been imported into the United States for nearly thirty years and can last for two decades or more. The 2010, which they now call “Vieilles Vignes,” exhibits aromas and flavors of cedarwood, spice box, black currants and berries. This medium-bodied, well-made blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc should drink well for 7-8 years. (Although last year I drank a 1952 that was still quite tasty.)"Wine Advocate 87-88 points

Herencia Altes Garnacha 2013 Herencia Altes Garnacha 2013

100 year-old vine complexity at a steal of a price.

"Wow! Made from vines planted in 1915, the 2013 Garnacha Negra comes from the village of Batea, where wine has been made since the 15th century. Eric Solomon partnered with Spaniard Nuria Altes to produce this remarkable, cool-climate, high-altitude Grenache with a Pinot Noir-like personality. Abundant notes of cranberries, red cherries, black currants and hints of forest floor and damp earth are followed by a medium-bodied wine with terrific fruit intensity and richness that can only be the result of these old vines. The wine also possesses a freshness, vibrancy and exuberance that are stunningly impressive. Drink it over the next 1-2 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Product #28782 (In Stock)
Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013

Back in the old days, pretty much all white Bordeaux was a blend of the region’s three complementary grapes:  Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  As Loire Valley and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became more popular in the 1980s, Bordeaux growers began phasing out first Muscadelle (too hard to grow) and then Semillon (usually pulled up in favor of Cabernet and Merlot).  The resulting Sauvignon-dominant (or 100% Sauvignon) white Bordeauxs can be a lot of refreshing, pool-side, fun – but they lack more traditional wine’s complexity of flavors and mellow, food-friendly, textures.

So, finding a traditional blend like this one is a real treat, especially at this great value price.  Give it a swirl and you’ll find a classic white Bordeaux nose of lemon/tangerine fruit, grapefruit pith, a bit of fresh mown grass, and the note of wet wool that Semillon brings to Bordeaux.  With air, a note of passion fruit and crushed savory herb emerges.  It’s light to medium-bodied and very fresh and happy in the mouth with flavors of lemon drop, tangerine, crushed herb and passion fruit puree.  On the finish, the fresh lemon and lime zest character comes forward and you’ll notice your mouth watering as the lemon and herb flavors linger on.   A lovely wine for any shellfish and herb dish or for salads with goat cheese.
