La Playa Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2013 Product #28796 (In Stock)
La Playa Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2013 La Playa Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2013

As soon as we tasted this fantastic value, we knew many of you would love it. From first sniff to last note of the finish, its a juicy, red currant and cherry Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit of spice, a hint of herb and just the right dusting of dark chocolate.  The round texture, generous flavors, and grape sweeet-tart and spiced cherry finish make it easy to pair with food and a great Tuesday supper and Saturday party red.  If you enjoyed past red values like Owl House or Chilensis, this could be your next big thing for not many bucks at all.

Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2013 Product #29248 (In Stock)
Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2013 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2013

A fun, flavorful, and fine value Tuscan Sangiovese made by Paolo Masi from grapes grown near Rufina in Chianti. Ripe aromas and flavors of cherry and red berry start off bright and fresh and then get darker with a little air. The juicy acidity and light tannins make this easy to just sip, but give it enough substance to enjoy with pizza, burgers, or a big bowl of pasta and red sauce.  There's enough going on here to hold your interest through a few glasses and - especially at this price - tempt you to open a second bottle as the night goes on.  Fun stuff!

Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Product #27960 (In Stock)
Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013

As much as we love Argentina's straight Malbec wines, they can get even better with the help of a blending partner.  In the Los Ailos, Syrah plays that role, taking what would have been a pleasant, juicy, red to a whole new level of richness and flavor.

The 2013 Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry and black plum.  Then, in the mouth, it's ripe and juicy with plenty of fresh black fruit, a little leather, and a nice touch of minerality.  It's balanced and fresh with a fine spread of ripe tannin on the back promising good things at table.  Very nice value.

Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012 Product #28770 (In Stock)
Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012 Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012

Here's the kind of value that made Spain famous in the international wine world, but that seems to have vanished in recent years. It's 100% Tempranillo done in tank that, as a Robert Parker said of the 2011, is "a delicious, quasi-fruit bomb offering loads of berry fruit, roasted herb, lavender and earthy, peppery notes."  A fine party or backyard cookout red at a very compelling price.

Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Product #28207 (In Stock)
Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013

Back before Aussie Shiraz started to taste the same - thick, heavy, and laboring under a load of over-toasted oak - we used to find great value reds like this with ease.  Harder now, but still very much possible as one sip of the fresh, clean, and just 13.9% abv Gossford Shiraz shows.  This is all about ripe Shiraz fruit - black grape, black plum, blackberry, cherry and more - with great lift from juicy fruit acids.  The well-moderated oak treatment (6 months in French and American barrels) adds attractive spice and smoke notes and rounds off Syrah's rough edges without getting in the way of drinking fun.  "Fun" is really what this fantastic value red is all about.  And, at this price, you can share it with a crowd or just enjoy the fun anytime by itself or with everything from grilled beef to pizza.

Figaro Tinto Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29106 (In Stock)
Figaro Tinto Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Figaro Tinto Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Another example of the kind of old-vine wine value you only find in less well-known corners of Spain.  Here, it's 30 year and older Garnacha from near the town of Calatayud in Aragon.  Ripe fruit, cool fermentation, and a short stay in oak give a wonderfully fresh, fruity, and fun wine at a super value price.  We loved the purity of the black raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors and how the wine is focused in the mid-palate before fanning out over a broad, juicy, finish.  The touch of pepper on the nose and sweet spice at the end is an extra bonus and lifts this from "very good" to "seriously yummy."

“Bright violet color. Spicy blackberry and fresh flowers on the nose, given lift by a peppery nuance. Juicy and brisk on the palate, with clean dark berry flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Closes on a juicy note, with sneaky tannins and good focus.”International Wine Cellar 88 points

“This 2012 Tinto (100% Grenache) offers uplifted, fragrant notes of licorice, lavender and black cherry jam. Intense and spicy with medium to full body, and not a hard edge to be found, this is a classic, seductive, consumer-friendly Grenache to drink over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009 Product #29108 (In Stock)
Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009 Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009

Mencia and Bierzo – the region of Spain on the border of verdant Galicia and harsh, dry, Castilla Y Leon – seem made for each other.  In fact, the Mencia grape probably originated here as a mutation of much older, now lost, vines.  And, the Alvarez de Toledo family has about 300 years experience with growing and making wine in Bierzo, so it’s not entirely surprising they got this one right.  This is the kind of nicely fruity, medium-bodied, red that’s fun to drink all by itself and easy to pair with pretty  much anything you put on your weeknight table.  It’s a fine quaffer, but there’s more than enough complexity here if you feel like paying attention.

"Balsamic, leather, and black fruits are the principal notes struck by this suave effort that over-delivers in a big way. Like its older sibling, it can be enjoyed now but will have more to say in 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Estacion Cabernet Sauvignon Chile 2012 Product #29295 (In Stock)
Estacion Cabernet Sauvignon Chile 2012 Estacion Cabernet Sauvignon Chile 2012

Estacion is the even better value line from the solid Chilean value winery Estampa.  It's not easy taming Chilean Cabernet's sometimes aggressive herbal aromas/flavors without veering off into over-ripeness or needing high-toast oak to add a little depth.  So, this all tank, all Cabernet Sauvignon, is a wonderful surprise!  It opens with savory aromas of black cherry, currant, dried herb and cocoa.  The flavors pulse through on the palate where the texture is creamy but the cherry/currant fruit and mocha flavors stay clear and clean.  A nice squirt of tangy cherry acidity lends brightness to the currant and chocolate flavors that linger over fine, soft, tannins at the end.  Very tasty burger/cookout/cocktail Cab at a very, VERY, pleasant price!

Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Product #29373 (In Stock)
Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011

Number 8 on Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buys of 2014!   The grape blend here is a good example of why folks find Portuguese wine intimidating:  Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelão, Pinot Noir, and Touriga Nacional are in there somewhere!  The winemaking is pretty straight ahead, with fermentation in tank and just a little time in barrel and bottle before release.  But there’s a nice touch of complexity to the plump, juicy, aromas and flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and tangy plum fruit and accents of crushed violets and lavender.  At just 12.5% abv, you can enjoy this solo with a chill or pair it everything from fried chicken to grilled tuna or burgers.

"A dark colored, dense wine that is rich and firmly structured. Aged in wood, it holds flavors of plum and berry fruits balanced with a fresh acidity. This is a wine for aging, its structure a powerful statement. Drink from 2014.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013 Product #28690 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013

Stunning blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, and long one of our – and Robert Parker’s – “go to” wineries for great value reds, this Campo de Borgia Garnacha specialist has outdone itself with a brilliant 2012.  A perfect bottle to serve to a crowd or sip on its own after a hard day, this will also sing with anything from salmon to burgers or roast pork.

"Deep ruby. Cherry, dark berries, vanilla and peppery spices on the fragrant nose. Smooth, pliant and juicy, showing a subtle spiciness to its open-knit blackberry and cherry flavors. Finishes smoky, broad and persistent, leaving dark berry and black pepper notes behind. Lots of wine for the money here, as is normal for this bottling."International Wine Cellar 89 points

"Another steal in terms of wine value is the 2013 Garnacha, which is a 15,000-case blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo that is fermented and aged in stainless steel. This special cuvée has been a huge success commercially for many years. Lots of strawberry, black cherry and fruitcake aromas intermixed with hints of earthy, sandy notes jump from the glass of this 2013. Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012 Product #27782 (In Stock)
Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012 Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012

A straight-ahead, lightly oaked, Tempranillo with good richness, plenty of fruit and spice, and enough acidity to stay fresh.

"Aged for six months in two- and three-year-old French oak. Bright purple. Smoky cherry and dark berries on the fragrant nose. Lush and open-knit, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and boysenberry flavors accented by a hint of cracked pepper. Finishes smooth and spicy, with a hint of tannins and good persistence."International Wine Cellar 89 points

“The 2012 Paso a Paso Tempranillo is even better. Aged six months in neutral French oak, it displays a savory, slightly fleshier style than its organic cousin. A sleeper of the vintage, it reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of black currants and jammy black cherries, excellent purity and texture, and a medium-bodied finish. This delicious red is an outrageous value. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Product #28255 (In Stock)
Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012

The Recorba Ribera del Duero Tinto is an example of what happens when you get Tempranillo all the way ripe and then let it show it’s colors without any wood at all.  Big aromas and flavors of red plum, black cherry and raspberry take center stage with accents of natural spice, warm stones, and a touch of exotic sandalwood.  Since Dave McIntyre reviewed it last November, it’s settled down and opened up, but still represents a huge “bang for the buck” Tempranillo to enjoy by itself or with pretty much anything you’d put on the grill.

Warning: This is a gateway drug that might get you hooked on the earthy Tempranillos of Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, which typically cost $20 and up. Ribera fans will want to stock up and give their credit cards a break. When I first opened this wine, it was a bit rough-and-tumble, in a good way; two evenings later, it had settled down but was still vibrant and delicious. How often can we say that about a $10 wine?”  Washington Post **1/2

Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008 Product #28952 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008 Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2008

Wow. Just wow.  A stunning red that's easy to sip and has the stuffing for big food.  How did they make such a fantastic wine at such a low, low, price?

"The 2008 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza is a blend of 93% Tempranillo and 7% Garnacha aged for 18 months in French and American oak. It has a mellow bouquet of dried herbs, terracotta tiles and dusky black fruit that is very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin: tart red berried fruit, laced with tobacco and dried herbs on the dry, crisp finish. This is a superb classical Rioja Crianza. Drink now-2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2012 Product #29234 (In Stock)
Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2012 Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2012

The best thing about big harvests in great years like 2012 is how many top-notch "little" wines get made.  Here you'll find generous aromas of cherry, cranberry and mint leading to flavors of maraschino cherry, plum, and red berry with just a hint of spice and orange blossom. The light, fresh, texture, soft tannins, and juicy acids make this a delicious quaffer, although there's enough support for it to work with salmon or pork.  Outstanding value in balanced, easygoing, Pinot Noir.

Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Product #29364 (In Stock)
Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012

Like it's neighbor Cahors, Buzet was once a bustling source of robust reds for export to England and beyond (before those nasty Bordelais started taxing wine moving up the Gironde to the sea). Today, it's starting to reemerge as a fine value source for rich, soft, Bordeaux-style wines without the Bordeaux price tag.

This little beauty from the Buzet co-op is a fine example of what can be done with Bordeaux grapes here in France's Southwest - and one of the few no-sulfur added wines in the store.  Cabernet for structure and Merlot for plum fruit with time in fine oak barrels (the co-op makes their own!) for a soft, supple, complexity.  Plump, ripe cherry and currant fruit gets just the right touch of spice, tobacco, and fresh herb to go with the finely tannic finish. Very good value here.

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superior 2010 375ml

As always, a lovely value!

"Admirers of the so-called “little” wines of Bordeaux will no doubt be familiar with Recougne, which has been imported into the United States for nearly thirty years and can last for two decades or more. The 2010, which they now call “Vieilles Vignes,” exhibits aromas and flavors of cedarwood, spice box, black currants and berries. This medium-bodied, well-made blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc should drink well for 7-8 years. (Although last year I drank a 1952 that was still quite tasty.)"Wine Advocate 87-88 points

Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013 Product #29266 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013 Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013

Malbec surged to international fame on the strength of the darkly fruited, ripe, and lush examples grown in Argentina’s Mendoza vineyards.  But, before that, it was the basis of one of the most famous wines of late medieval Europe, the intense, earthy, bitingly tannic “black wines” of Cahors in the Southwest of France. The 2012 Val De Salis Malbec from vineyards near the French walled city of  Carcassonne sort of splits the difference in these two styles to deliver a big mouthful of juicy, complex, fruity fun.

You’ll find plenty of New World fruit here, with generous dollops of red plum, raspberry and tangy pie cherry in the aromas and on the palate.  And, you’ll also notice the Old World notes of fresh leather, licorice root, and the notes of lavender, thyme, and black olive the French call garrigue.  On the finish, the New/Old World influence merge to deliver lingering red fruit, licorice, and lavender flavors, bright acidity, and just the right dose of dusty tannin.  What you won’t find is any oak to get in the way of the pure, clean, and refreshing flavors.  Structured enough to sing with burgers, pizza, grilled chicken or most any everyday food, but soft and generous enough to just sip at a party.  And, a steal at this price!

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Product #28782 (In Stock)
Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013

Back in the old days, pretty much all white Bordeaux was a blend of the region’s three complementary grapes:  Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  As Loire Valley and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became more popular in the 1980s, Bordeaux growers began phasing out first Muscadelle (too hard to grow) and then Semillon (usually pulled up in favor of Cabernet and Merlot).  The resulting Sauvignon-dominant (or 100% Sauvignon) white Bordeauxs can be a lot of refreshing, pool-side, fun – but they lack more traditional wine’s complexity of flavors and mellow, food-friendly, textures.

So, finding a traditional blend like this one is a real treat, especially at this great value price.  Give it a swirl and you’ll find a classic white Bordeaux nose of lemon/tangerine fruit, grapefruit pith, a bit of fresh mown grass, and the note of wet wool that Semillon brings to Bordeaux.  With air, a note of passion fruit and crushed savory herb emerges.  It’s light to medium-bodied and very fresh and happy in the mouth with flavors of lemon drop, tangerine, crushed herb and passion fruit puree.  On the finish, the fresh lemon and lime zest character comes forward and you’ll notice your mouth watering as the lemon and herb flavors linger on.   A lovely wine for any shellfish and herb dish or for salads with goat cheese.
