Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2015 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2015

Another outstanding 2015 from grapes grown near Rufina in Chianti. Bursting with ripe cherry and red berry fruit that get surprisingly dark and rich with air and keep on pumping right through the easygoing finish.  It's bright enough to sing with pizza and pasta and smooth enough to enjoy on its own. This tasty, easygoing, Sangiovese is just about the perfect casual Italian spaghetti night red.  And, at this great price, you can put it in the spaghetti, too and pop, pour, and enjoy with a crowd.

Bodega Paris Ribera Del Duero Roble 2009 Product #31211 (In Stock)
Bodega Paris Ribera Del Duero Roble 2009 Bodega Paris Ribera Del Duero Roble 2009

When the wine first came to the attention of the international press, Josh Raynolds (then at Steve Tanzer’s IWC) liked it a lot:  “Deep ruby. Cherry-vanilla and mocha scents are complemented by anise and peppery spices. Sweet dark fruit flavors pick up bitterness with air, along with suggestions of blood orange and candied violet. Shows a tart note on the clinging finish.  IWC 88 points

Now, 4 years later, it’s even better.  The aromas are bold and rich with loads of dark blackberry, blueberry, and roasted black raspberry fruit and sophisticated accents of earth, sweet and savory spice, and a twist of burnt orange peel.  Not a huge wine on the palate and remarkably fresh, the flavors are deep and complex with blueberry and black raspberry fruit, blood orange, vanilla bean, exotic spice and more that really flood your mouth.  Then the wine finishes juicy and bright with mild dusty tannins and lingering notes of dark chocolate, raspberry, blood orange and spice.

At just 12.5% alcohol, there’s nothing heavy or thick here, but the rich flavors are more than a match for beef or lamb stew.  And, the juicy acids and fine tannins make it just as delicious with pizza, a burger, or simply sipping with friends.  A stellar value!

In 2015, this happy, eager to please, Cotes du Rhone opens up with fresh aromas of blackberry, currant, cracked pepper, lavender and a hint of smoke.  On the palate it’s medium-bodied and pumps out flavors of just-picked raspberry and blackberry, cranberry, and a touch of crumbled dry herb.  It finishes with a big burst of tangy raspberry, black pepper, and red plum, mouthwatering and thirst quenching and with just enough dusty tannin to stand up to pizza, nachos, sausages, fried chicken, or the casual fun-food of your choice!

“Checking in as a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone is a floral, red and black berry, spice and sappy herb-scented effort that has medium-bodied richness, juicy acidity and a charming, quaffable style. Drink this solid, bistro styled red over the coming couple of years.”Wine Advocate 87 points

"Aged for three months in three-year-old French and American oak barrels. Bright ruby. Fresh cherry and dark berries on the nose, with hints of vanilla and woodsmoke building with air. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering gently sweet blackberry and cherry flavors and a touch of mocha. A floral nuance come up on the gently tannic finish, which lingers with good spicy persistence. Lots of bang for the buck here."  Vinous (Raynolds) 88 points

Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011

Number 8 on Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buys of 2014!   The grape blend here is a good example of why folks find Portuguese wine intimidating:  Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelão, Pinot Noir, and Touriga Nacional are in there somewhere!  The winemaking is pretty straight ahead, with fermentation in tank and just a little time in barrel and bottle before release.  But there’s a nice touch of complexity to the plump, juicy, aromas and flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and tangy plum fruit and accents of crushed violets and lavender.  At just 12.5% abv, you can enjoy this solo with a chill or pair it everything from fried chicken to grilled tuna or burgers.

"A dark colored, dense wine that is rich and firmly structured. Aged in wood, it holds flavors of plum and berry fruits balanced with a fresh acidity. This is a wine for aging, its structure a powerful statement. Drink from 2014.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Serious wine value fun alert here!  This is one of those wines you'll want on hand to pair with any meal, to serve with a chill on a warm day or to let warm up and gain richness on a cool autumn evening.  It's 100% Barbera, the juicy, low tannin, cherry and earth-laden grape of Piemonte to the south of Turin.  This example from Monferrato is just bursting with juicy black cherry fruit with accents of violets, leather, and spice.  There's a richness and depth here that many $20 Barberas lack and a sweet/tangy cherry and cherry pit finish that will keep you coming back for more.  A wine that screams "Italy" but will also please a crowd.

Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2015 Product #30859 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2015 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2015

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Product #31194 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2015

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2015 edition is even better, clearly the best release of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date.  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

The wine opens with big, bold aromas of black cherry, dark berries, underbrush, loamy earth and cracked black pepper. Take a sip and you'll love the explosion of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit and accents of pepper, rich earth, and sweet spice - all from the grape, because there's no oak here at all.  The finish is broad, fresh and very long, with fine, dusty, tannins providing food-friendly support and dark berry and pepper flavors lingering nicely.  A delicious wine that sell for a crazy low price.

Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2015 Product #31344 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2015 Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2015

We’ve been fans of this small (for Bordeaux) family estate for years but the 2015 steps up the quality to an entirely new level! It’s a blend of un-oaked Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) from the sand, clay and limestone soils of Bordeaux’s Entre Deux Mers region – part of the “Right Bank” that excelled in the outstanding 2015 vintage.

You'll find it deliciously fresh and fun from the first pour and sip, but the real fun comes over the next few hours (or days), as the aromas and flavors get deeper and darker, with black currant, cedar, and dark chocolate holding center stage and classic Bordeaux notes of cedar, tobacco and crushed herb emerging on top.  The texture stays wonderful throughout - mouthfilling and dense enough to demand attention but never heavy or thick or plodding.  And the finish just keeps getting better and better, smooth and long with lingering flavors of fruit, cedar, chocolate and spice.  Hard to resist right this second, but do yourself a favor and lay some down and then pull a bottle out for a special dinner up to 10 years from now.  No one will ever believe what you paid!

100 year-old vine complexity at a steal of a price. If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.  The tannins have softened since the review below, so enjoy right now with grilled foods and warm weather!

"Six months in a mix of French and Portuguese oak has given this wine a rich, smooth character. Produced from a field blend of more than 40 different varieties, the wine is stylishly structured and ripe with blackberry fruits."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Castil Harria Reserva Navarra 2005 Product #31655 (In Stock)
Castil Harria Reserva Navarra 2005 Castil Harria Reserva Navarra 2005

The ability of even pretty modest Tempranillo-based Spanish wines to age well is on display here in spades.  On release, this was a nice little $15 red from a good co-op in Navara, not far from Rioja.  The co-op's members grow mainly Garnacha, but this wine takes advanage of some plots of rich and dark-fruited Temparnillo given extra lift from dashes of Garnacha, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  At age 11, the wine has held onto its fruit - bright cherry with a hint of Grenache-y strawberry - nicely and shows layer upon layer of mellow oak spice.  Fine and dusty tannins give support but certainly don't get in the way of casual sipping. And as the wine has gained age and complexity, the price has just gone down.  Well worth a try!

Big and rich with plenty of power and a nice floral note, too.

"This 100% Bobal (60 to 80-year-old vines), aged four months in concrete, represents a terrific buy. It possesses excellent delineation as well as lots of blueberry and sweet and sour cherry fruit intermixed with notions of chalk and strawberries. Medium-bodied and fruity with attractive texture as well as purity, it should drink well for several years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml

Half Bottles!  Perfect for an evening sip.

"A winner from the Milhade family, Chateau Recougne has a reputation for lasting 20-30 years in the bottle in many vintages. I do not think the 2011 has that much staying power, but it over-delivers in body, richness, density and length. It is a shockingly good effort displaying a dark ruby color as well as abundant notes of earth, licorice and black currants, surprising body, richness and depth. A major sleeper of the vintage, it should drink well for 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

"What could be a hidden gem in the vintage, the 2015 Corbières Col des Vents is 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Syrah that’s aging all in tank. A big, sexy, fruit-loaded effort, it offers a liquid blackberry like style of fruit as well as crushed herbs, pepper and a hint of earth. It should drink nicely right out of the gate."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Product #30795 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A tad more rich and round in the warm 2015 harvest, but still a refreshingly great value!
