Castillo Ducay Rosado 2014 Product #29511 (In Stock)
Castillo Ducay Rosado 2014 Castillo Ducay Rosado 2014

Spain’s Cariñena region is scorching hot during the day, shockingly cool at night, and covered in layers and layers of fractured rock and pebbles – in other words, a great place to make great rosé!  The label here honors the local name for Cariñena wines - “el vino de las piedras” or  “wine of the rocks”  - while the wine in the bottle is a testament to how dedicated local growers are bringing this historically important wine region back to prominence.

It’s a blend of mostly Garnacha with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon for complexity and color.  And there’s plenty of color – the wine almost fluoresces in the glass with the brilliant pink taking on almost lavender highlights. The aromas are just as exuberant as the color – big scents of watermelon granite, ripe strawberry, blood orange, and even a little white pepper.  The wine dances across your palate with juicy lemon acidity carrying flavors of candied watermelon, red berries, and plenty of sweet/sour citrus.  It finishes dry and crisp, with a Jolly Rancher-like tang to the lingering watermelon, tangerine, and orange zest flavors.  There’s a lot of complexity – and even more fun! – here, especially at this very attractive price.

Paul D Rose of Zweigelt Blauberger 2014 Product #29854 (In Stock)
Paul D Rose of Zweigelt Blauberger 2014 Paul D Rose of Zweigelt Blauberger 2014

The hot pink package gives you a pretty good clue about young Paul Direder preferred style of rosé – subtle it ain’t.  Made from a direct press of juicy Zweigelt and the rarely seen blending grape Blauberger, the aromas of just crushed cranberry, ripe watermelon and tangy strawberry fruit jump from the glass.  The flavors are equally exuberant and a bit wild, with watermelon Jolly Rancher, strawberry puree, and tart pie cherry flavors careening across your palate on a slick bed of lemon/lime acidity.  Overtly fruity but dry, tingling, and mouthwatering, you could certainly slosh some of this into a plastic tumbler and slug it back poolside or after mowing the lawn with great satisfaction.  But, just try it on a picnic with deviled eggs, potato salad and cold fried chicken (or wurst if you’re feeling authentic), and you’ll wonder how such an oversized, 1.0 liter, bottle can get empty quite so fast.

J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2014 375ml Product #29741 (In Stock)
J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2014 375ml J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2014 375ml

Winemaker Jérémie Mourat shrunk his distinctive Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rosé bottle to half-size here, but it’s still 100% of the flavor (and perhaps even more fun!).  It’s a pretty pale pink in color and jam-packed with flavor. Redolent of ripe cherries, fresh strawberry, sweet watermelon, and just a touch of fresh herb, it starts off bright, spreads out to coat your palate, and finishes clean, fresh, and dry.  The half-bottle is perfect to start off an evening or enjoy at a picnic, and it even fits snugly into an insulated beer koozie (not that YOU’D ever drink straight from the bottle, but perhaps your friends have less restraint.)

J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2014 Product #29546 (In Stock)
J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2014 J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2014

This fun, bright, and very drinkable rosé isn’t just a delicious pink treat for a warm summer’s day – it’s an important part of the secret to the yummy concentration of Jérémie Mourat’s Collection Rouge!  After the Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Negrette grapes for the Collection  Rouge are crushed and beginning their fermentation, Mourat bleeds off part of the juice – just lightly stained pink from short contact with the black grape skins – to reduce the ratio of juice to skins in the red.  The pink stuff goes into tank where it finishes fermentation in tank for maximum freshness and vigor.

The French call this the “saignée” (“to bleed”) method of rosé production, and here it delivers a pretty pink that’s bursting with flavor.  The aromas are fresh and floral, with crushed berry, tart cherry, and just a hint of dried herb wafting out of the glass.  On the palate, the wine starts off bright and then spreads out to deliver ripe cherry, fresh strawberry, sweet watermelon, and just a touch of herb flavor.  The finish is lip smackingly crisp – almost tart – with juicy flavors of fresh watermelon, watermelon pickle, and tangy berry.  This will sing with hearty picnic food like cold fried chicken or late afternoon nibbles like salami and cheese.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2014 Product #29765 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2014 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2014

If you thought Philippe’s 2013 rosé was good, just wait until you try the 2014!  A touch darker in color and one notch more concentrated and intense than most pink wines from Provence, but just as full of fruit and refreshment.  Unusually for a rosé from this part of the Rhone valley, it’s 90% Mourvedre (made famous by Domaine Tempier and other Bandol estates) and just 10% Grenache.

Lovely dark pink in color, the generous aromas feature bright cherry, passion fruit, and wild herb scents. The texture and shape of the wine in your mouth is fantastic, starting soft and silky, exploding into palate coating flavors, and then focusing down with laser-like precision and focus on the mouthwatering finish.  You’ll find plenty of wild strawberry, passion fruit, ripe citrus, fresh herb and just a touch of earthy Mourvedre flavors running through the wine with mouthwatering watermelon, berry, pink grapefruit and mineral notes on the long, juicy, finish.  A great solo sipper and even better with fresh salads, smoked salmon, or anything with plenty of savory herb and garlic.
