Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014 Product #29849 (In Stock)
Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014 Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014

This ripe and fresh no-oak Chardonnay comes from stony vineyards deep within the heart of France's Languedoc region, not far from the famed Mas de Daumass Gassac.  The vineyards lie in a valley northwest of Montpellier where warm sunshine promotes ripening and cool nighttime breezes from the Mediterranean help retain freshness and fruit flavors.

Fresh aromas of juicy pear, golden apple and a hints of peach and honeysuckle lead to a nice, generous, mouthful of fresh fruit, toasted nut, and honeysuckle.  The crisp, fruity, acids build from the middle to the back to give this a lip-smacking, mouthwatering, finish as pear, apple and floral notes linger nicely.  A fine all-around Chardonnay for fish, chicken, or simply sipping.

Alexander Valley Gewurztraminer Mendocino 2014 Product #29940 (In Stock)
Alexander Valley Gewurztraminer Mendocino 2014 Alexander Valley Gewurztraminer Mendocino 2014

A delightful, very aromatic, treat from a winery better known for Cabernet and Zinfandel.  From a tiny vineyard in Medocino, this serves up extravagant aromas of white fruit, lychee fruit, ginger, and baking spice.  On the palate, it's rich and loaded with grapefruit and pear flavors to go with the gingery spice and then turns very dry, even crisp, on the finish with ginger and rose petal notes lingering behind.  Fun stuff and a terrific value.  Try it!

Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2014 Product #30562 (In Stock)
Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2014 Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2014

The motto here is “Gascony seen by a feminine point of view.”  Other than the fact that the estate is led by women, I’m not sure what that really means, but this is a heck of a delicious white for Spring and Summer sipping.  The blend is 80% Colombard – the main white grape in Gascony – for bright acidity and round texture and 20% Sauvignon Blanc for a big burst of fruit and touch of fresh hay.  The fruit flavors coat your palate with ripe green melon, golden apple, and orange/tangerine flavors set off by lemony acids, a dash of minerality, and a whiff of fresh cut grass.  A great summer sipper that delivers Sauvignon Blanc-like flavors that have been softened and tamed by the Colombard.  Yummy with salads, asparagus, shellfish, or just to sip on its own.

La Bastarda Bianco Toscana 2014 La Bastarda Bianco Toscana 2014

As the whimsical label suggests, there's no reason to take this fresh and fruit-filled Trebbiano (70%) and Chardonnay blend too seriously.  Big, juicy, white peach, apricot, and lemon fruit sings out here with more zesty peach fruit and a touch of bitter almond on the finish.  A fine sipper and even better companion for trout, scampi or white fish. Very hard to beat at this price!

Palacio De Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Product #30280 (In Stock)
Palacio De Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Palacio De Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2014

We've loved Palacio de Bornos Verdejo for years, but just wait until you try their zesty Sauvignon Blanc!  Like the Verdejo, this is from the hot, arid, vineyards of Spain's Rueda where plenty of sunshine gives great ripeness and cool, crisp, nights (and very careful winemaking) translate into...well, a cool, crisp, white!  This juicy value pumps out loads of citrus and green grape fruit with an enlivening dash of herbal Meyer lemon.  Delicious and fun to drink.

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Blanc 2014 Product #30528 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Blanc 2014 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Blanc 2014

With its hot, sunny, days and near constant wind, France’s deep South Languedoc isn’t the first place you’d expect to find snappy, fresh, white wines.  But, the Guibert family have been at this winegrowing and making thing since the 1970s, and they’ve clearly mastered the trick!  About 40% Grenache Blanc provides the base for Guilhem Blanc.  While it doesn’t have a lot of flavor on its own, white Grenache provides body and richness to the blend and a hint of something nutty or waxy on the nose and palate, too.

Add in 30% Sauvignon Blanc, grown in cooler sites and harvested fairly early to give the wine a dose of fresh citrus fruit, aromas of fresh herb, and – in this warm climate – a touch of ripe peach and apricot.  Then – in part to help save old vines that would otherwise be ripped up – finish with a dose of 30% Terret Blanc.  One of the oldest grape varieties in Languedoc (and, until the 1960s, the most widely planted), Terret has the great virtue of retaining high acidity and lower alcohol even in the hot Sud sun.  Here it gives the wine a lift of freshness and lemony acidity plus a subtle note of fresh flowers.  The final blend is medium-bodied, mouthwatering, and full of peach, apricot, lemon, and floral aromas and flavors.  Delicious stuff and a great match for baked fish or soft cheese.

Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015 Product #30615 (In Stock)
Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015 Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  The 2015 harvest yielded plump, ripe, Chardonnay fruit with plenty of heft and balancing acidity.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with nice energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  A tad richer and deeper than the 2014, but just as pure and mineral and delicious.

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2015 Product #30677 (In Stock)

Back in the old days, pretty much all white Bordeaux was a blend of the region’s three complementary grapes:  Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  As Loire Valley and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became more popular in the 1980s, Bordeaux growers began phasing out first Muscadelle (too hard to grow) and then Semillon (usually pulled up in favor of Cabernet and Merlot).  The resulting Sauvignon-dominant (or 100% Sauvignon) white Bordeauxs can be a lot of refreshing, pool-side, fun – but they lack more traditional wine’s complexity of flavors and mellow, food-friendly, textures.

So, finding a traditional blend like this one is a real treat, especially at this great value price.  Give it a swirl and you’ll find a classic white Bordeaux nose of lemon/tangerine fruit, grapefruit pith, a bit of fresh mown grass, and the note of wet wool that Semillon brings to Bordeaux.  With air, a note of passion fruit and crushed savory herb emerges.  It’s light to medium-bodied and very fresh and happy in the mouth with flavors of lemon drop, tangerine, crushed herb and passion fruit puree.  On the finish, the fresh lemon and lime zest character comes forward and you’ll notice your mouth watering as the lemon and herb flavors linger on.   A lovely wine for any shellfish and herb dish or for salads with goat cheese.

Palacio De Bornos Verdejo Rueda 2015 Product #30719 (In Stock)
Palacio De Bornos Verdejo Rueda 2015 Palacio De Bornos Verdejo Rueda 2015

Over the past decade in Spain, "Verdejo" has come to be synonymous with "clean, crisp, white wine."  Which is unexpected, since it's only been 20 years or so since the Sanz family launched this estate and led the transformation of Rueda from oxidized, sherry-like, wines to refreshing beauties like this one!

At its best, Verdejo is like a richer, less grapefruity, version of Sauvignon Blanc.  Here big aromas of tropical fruit, tangerine, lemongrass and lemon thyme lead to bold flavors of ripe citrus (tangerine, orange, lemon) with a touch of anise and fresh cut grass for interest.  It's smooth and vibrant on the palate with excellent length and a mouthwatering finish that leaves citrus, green melon, and peach skin flavors lingering nicely.  A refreshing white to just sip and even better with Spanish tapas, sushi, or even spicy Cajun shrimp.

Robert Parker called the 90 point 2013 release, "One of the greatest buys I have tasted this year."  The 2014 is better.  Gorgeous aromas and flavors of fresh flowers, green melon, crisp pear, and a touch of orange citrus are framed by bright, clean, acids.  Juicy, fruity, crisp and dry, there's enough body here to pair this with pretty much anything you'd care to eat.  Or, just pour a glass and sip it by yourself or with friends

Ch La Roche St. Jean Blanc 2014 Product #29625 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Blanc 2014 Ch La Roche St. Jean Blanc 2014

The 2014 edition of this customer and staff favorite Sauvignon Blanc starts with aromas of just-squeezed lemon and fresh cut grass. On the palate, there’s a nice, juicy hit of riper Meyer lemon that comes in, and the whole thing finishes mouthwateringly clean. While many white Bordeaux are blended with Semillon and Muscadelle to add waxy weight or fruitiness, Ch La Roche St Jean is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. There’s no oak to hide all that tangy fruit, and it’s a very reasonable 12.5% alcohol. If you’ve shied away from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc because of its over-the-top grapefruitiness or overwhelming, pungent passionfruit flavors, this is the perfect SB for you.

Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2014 Product #29734 (In Stock)
Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2014 Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2014

This 100% estate grown Picpoul de Pinet clearly demonstrates just how under-rated this variety is. You’ll find pretty aromas of white flowers, lemon/lime citrus, and anise/fennel notes to start.  Then a crisp, minerally, texture with tart granny smith apple, green melon, and lemon/lime flavors and a clean, dry, finish.  This is just a great all-around daily white, with enough flavor and body to shine by itself at a party and enough complexity and depth to pair well with freshwater fish and lighter poultry dishes.  Tremendous value!

Riebeek Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Product #30438 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Riebeek Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2015

From the windswept hills of South Africa’s Swartland region, here’s a fantastic Sauvignon Blanc for folks who enjoy this refreshing varietal’s snap and zing, but don’t want to get overwhelmed by grapefruit and grass.  Riebeek Cellars was established in 1941, making it an “old” estate for this part of South Africa, and the style here seems a little “Old World” too, marrying nice ripeness with a little restraint and class.

The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc is certainly a winner, with big aromas and flavors of fresh peach, green melon, just cut apple, and juicy lemon/lime acidity.  We love how its more than mouthwatering and refreshing enough to slake your thirst on a hot afternoon, but also mellow and easygoing enough to delight for glass after glass.  Robert Parker called the last vintage "A real winner" (89 points) and Wine Spectator made the 2012 a "Best Buy."  The 2015 is at least that good.  A screaming value.

Rethore Davy Chardonnay Les Parcelles 2014 Product #30436 (In Stock)
Rethore Davy Chardonnay Les Parcelles 2014 Rethore Davy Chardonnay Les Parcelles 2014

This friendly, every day, Chardonnay value comes from the charming commune of Saint-Rémy-en-Mauges, just to the east of Muscadet territory and to the west of Chenin Blanc dominated Anjou.  Owners Martine and Christophe Rethore and cousin/winemaker Jean-Michel Davy harvest their 20-30 year-old Chardonnay vines in two passes – one early for crisp acidity and freshness and one later for extra luscious ripe fruit and depth.  Fermentation and aging in stainless steel tanks protects the vibrancy of this cool growing area’s juicy fruit.

The wine opens with classic Chardonnay scents of pear, yellow apple, ripe pineapple, apricot and a hint of hazelnut.  The flavors are ripe, fresh, and inviting, with plenty of sweet apple and spicy pear at the core and a touch of lemony citrus for lift and definition.  The easygoing finish has just the right touch of crispness to make your mouth water and lingering flavors of lemon, apricot, green apple, and light caramel accents.  A fun drinker’s Chardonnay with enough heft to handle casual meals and party nibbles and enough zip to refresh on its own.

Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2013 375ml Product #30013 (In Stock)
Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2013 375ml Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2013 375ml

Half Bottle  Always a delicious value, the 2013 Catena Chardonnay may just be the best ever.  A blend of oaked and tank-aged wine, it crackles with fantastic fresh apple, pear, peach and pineapple fruit framed by notes of crushed mint and toasted hazlenut.  The vivid fruit pumps on through the juicy finish where Burgundy-like minerality and creamy toast notes linger.  Fantastic stuff.

"The Catena 2013 Chardonnay mixes grapes form Agrelo (15%) and the rest from different zones in the Uco Valley (Tupungato and San Carlos, Eugenio Bustos and Altamira). 50% of the wine fermented in used oak barriques, 10% in new 500-liter French oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel. Part of the barrels go through malolactic fermentation, but not all. 2013 feels ripe despite the character of the vintage, and although the oak is a lot less noticeable than in previous vintages it provides creaminess that makes it approachable and easy. The palate is soft and the acidity is quite integrated with the fruit. An approachable, nice Chardonnay."Wine Advocate 90 points
