El Ganador Malbec Mendoza 2014 Product #30098 (In Stock)
El Ganador Malbec Mendoza 2014 El Ganador Malbec Mendoza 2014

Many of you have enjoyed the custom cuvees of Spanish wines developed by Wine Enthusiast Importer of the Year Fran Kysela in the past.  Here, Fran works his magic on Malbec. It's 100% Malbec from old-vines (some planted 1912) growing at 3,000 feet in Mendoza's prime Lujan de Cuyo sub-region. Grown at low yields and harvested 100% by hand - a rarity in Malbec at this price point - it's crushed in an old-style basket press to bring out plenty of color and flavor without hard tannins.  Fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks keeps the fruit front and center, while 10% of the wine picks up subtle notes of toast, smoke, and spice from six months in new French oak.

The pedigree belongs to a much more expensive wine, and you’ll find a lot more class and quality here than the modest price suggests.  It serves up big aromas of chocolate, smoke, mulberry and black cherry that carry on through the lush, rich, and very supple palate. The ripe cherry/berry flavors keep on pumping through the soft, broad, finish.  Drink it with pizza, with burgers, with cheese or just with friends – at these prices, you can drink it anytime you'd like!

Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2013 375ml Product #30013 (In Stock)
Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2013 375ml Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2013 375ml

Half Bottle  Always a delicious value, the 2013 Catena Chardonnay may just be the best ever.  A blend of oaked and tank-aged wine, it crackles with fantastic fresh apple, pear, peach and pineapple fruit framed by notes of crushed mint and toasted hazlenut.  The vivid fruit pumps on through the juicy finish where Burgundy-like minerality and creamy toast notes linger.  Fantastic stuff.

"The Catena 2013 Chardonnay mixes grapes form Agrelo (15%) and the rest from different zones in the Uco Valley (Tupungato and San Carlos, Eugenio Bustos and Altamira). 50% of the wine fermented in used oak barriques, 10% in new 500-liter French oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel. Part of the barrels go through malolactic fermentation, but not all. 2013 feels ripe despite the character of the vintage, and although the oak is a lot less noticeable than in previous vintages it provides creaminess that makes it approachable and easy. The palate is soft and the acidity is quite integrated with the fruit. An approachable, nice Chardonnay."Wine Advocate 90 points

Following hard on the 93 and 92 point Wine Advocate ratings for the past two vintages, this juicy, un-oaked, Malbec is better than ever in 2014.  Loads of ripe black cherry and raspberry fruit with accents of fresh flowers, baking spice, and damp earth.  One notch richer and more smooth than the 2013, this makes for great solo sipping and sings with robust foods (even pizza!).

Allamand Malbec Mendoza 2013 Allamand Malbec Mendoza 2013

We don’t know much (anything, actually) about the producer here, but this is a terrific, characterful, bottle of Malbec for the money! Much more complex and food-friendly than most wines in its class, here you’ll find rich, earthy, aromas leading to a medium-bodied palate with black fruit, baking spice, and one last kick of smoky earth.  The black plum and blackberry fruit linger nicely, while the earthy components make this a killer match for lamb or pork.

Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010 Product #29211 (In Stock)
Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010 Sur De Los Andes Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2010

Wine Enthusiast had this pegged as a $38 wine, and certainly it has that level of effort and expense behind it.  The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit came from some of the best sites in Mendoza, all grown without fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides.  The hand harvested fruit is sorted in the vineyard and then again on a modern sorting table in the winery before fermenting in tank with all natural yeast (no cultured yeast added).  The wine then rests and mellows for 15 months in small French oak barrels, including 30% second use and a whopping 70% new - a luxury that makes sense for a $30+ wine but is very rare in the under $20 space.  Then, perhaps the biggest luxury of all, it got another two years development in bottle to let the youthful Cabernet structure resolve and the rich, dark, fruit come to the fore.

“Layered berry and cassis aromas are a bit scratchy and gritty. This Cabernet feels saturated, pure and deep; flavors of blackberry, cassis, prune and chocolate are ripe and generous, while the finish is mildly herbal in flavor, with good length and build. Drink through 2018.” Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Finca Decero Cabernet Remolinos Mendoza 2013 Product #30537 (In Stock)
Finca Decero Cabernet Remolinos Mendoza 2013 Finca Decero Cabernet Remolinos Mendoza 2013

There's an awful lot going on here for an under $20 Cabernet Sauvignon.  The aromas are lush with generous doses of blackcurrant, black cherry, plum and chocolate.  It's lush on the palate, too, with layers of rich fruit, dark chocolate, spice, smoke, and more.  So far, so good - but things get really exciting on the finish where the flavors really fan out and coat your mouth with juicy blackberry, creamy chocolate, black raspberry, and cassis flavors that linger long and sweet and pure.  The fruity acidity keeps the wine fresh while fine, dusty, tannins give the wine heft and the potential to get even better over the next few years.  A superb value in Napa-style Cabernet that just happens to come from Mendoza!

“A full-bodied wine with ultra-fine tannin and a caressing finish. Lots of fruit yet reserved, balanced and stylish. Well-made cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.”  James Suckling 92 points

“Finca Decero, the Agrelo estate planted in the year 2000, keeps producing prodigious examples from the region. Polished, very drinkable wines that reflect place and vintage. The nose of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Remolinos Vineyard was full of cherries in liqueur and jammy strawberries with a pinch of sweet spices. There is only a hint of raspberry leaf in the palate which is polished by very fine tannins and good consistency to stand up to empanadas and lighter food, like the proverbial lamb chops. 120,000 bottles produced.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Bodega Noemia Malbec A Lisa Patagonia 2013 Product #30448 (In Stock)
Bodega Noemia Malbec A Lisa Patagonia 2013 Bodega Noemia Malbec A Lisa Patagonia 2013

Forget Mendoza – the “hot” source for vibrant, layered, and food-friendly Argentine Malbec is increasingly the far southern growing region of Patagonia.  Elegant red fruit gets accents from beefy, savory, notes of broth and thyme in a wine of silken texture and long, lingering, finish.

"Bright red-ruby. Aromas of raspberry, smoked meat, spice box, flowers and minerals had me thinking of both Syrah and Gevrey-Chambertin. At once seamless and energetic, showing terrific definition and lift to its rather wild flavors of dark berries, smoked meat and sandalwood. Sappy, savory Malbec with suave tannins and clinging red fruit and smoke flavors."  Vinous (Tanzer) 90 points

"The 2013 A Lisa was from a fresh, cool growing season in Río Negro. The grapes fermented in stainless steel destemmed but uncrushed. Only 20% of the wine matured in barrel while the rest was kept in stainless steel until bottling just before the next harvest. It's mostly Malbec with 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, a mixture of estate-grown grapes in their property in the desert in the Valle Azul, and others from leased vineyards in Mainque. The nose is extremely fresh, floral and elegant, with notes of bright cherries and even some reminiscences of blood oranges. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, slightly grainy tannins and great freshness, quite light on its feet. This is drinking very nicely now, but has great balance to develop in bottle. Superb quality for the price."Wine Advocate 92 points

La Posta Malbec Mendoza Pizzella 2014 Product #30363 (In Stock)
La Posta Malbec Mendoza Pizzella 2014 La Posta Malbec Mendoza Pizzella 2014

A big, rich, lavish, style from Laura Catena and winemaker Estela Perinetti.

"The 2014 Malbec Pizzella Vineyard is from Altamira. The vineyard was originally 17 hectares and the owner planted an additional 12 (and is planting yet more), so there is room to grow. This is the most harmonious, elegant, and at the same time backward, of the three single-vineyard Malbecs. Not as showy as the others in the palate either as the tannins are austere and the chalky minerality sticks to your teeth. The differences between the three Malbecs is clear as they each reflect where the grapes grow. The riper, warmer one from Ugarteche, the fresher, higher acidity wine from Tupungato and the one with more depth from here (Altamira). It should be readily available, as some 180,000 bottles were produced in 2014. Superb value!"Wine Advocate 90 points

Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2014 Product #30773 (In Stock)

Perhaps the greatest vintage ever for this Mendoza classic.

"The 2014 Chardonnay is a blend of three vineyards. The vineyards are divided into lots that are harvested at different times: Agrelo at 3,117 foot elevation, Villa Bastías at 3,675 foot elevation and Gualtallary at 4,757 foot elevation. Each vineyard is vinified differently and aged separately. The wines are blended at the end before bottling. The nose is subtly oaked with white fruit and floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and has very nice acidity which makes the wine not only fresher, but also longer and more mineral. This is the freshest of all the vintages of this Chardonnay, and the change in vineyards is really noticeable. Super! 350,000 bottles produced."Wine Advocate 92 points

Mendoza Vineyards MV Malbec Gran Reserva 2011 Product #29371 (In Stock)
Mendoza Vineyards MV Malbec Gran Reserva 2011 Mendoza Vineyards MV Malbec Gran Reserva 2011

It's back - but we're not sure how long our most popular Malbec of the past year will last.  Everything about this wine is “super-premium” – except the price!  Made to sell for $60 in the US, a change in distribution created this amazing opportunity to enjoy top-shelf luxury at a very nice, everyday, price.

“I was very impressed with this set of wines produced by a company that owns no vineyards, but sources grapes from selected locations in Mendoza. The 2011 Malbec Grand Reserve, aged for 20 months in new Nadalie barrels, smells of leather, forest floor, dill and paprika over a core of cherries in liqueur not unlike some traditional Riojas (from Spain, not from Argentina). The palate is medium-bodied, with some grippy tannins, good acidity and length. This wine calls for food. Drink 2014-2018.” Wine Advocate 92 points

Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2012 Product #28301 (In Stock)
Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2012 Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2012

A big Malbec that stays poised and focused, with half the wine raised in tank for freshness.

"The opaque purple-colored 2012 Malbec is a big (14.5% natural alcohol), 1,800-case cuvee that spent time in both neutral tanks (50%) and oak (50%). It reveals some spicy oak notes along with a big, sweet kiss of blackberry and black raspberry fruit as well as hints of camphor and white flowers. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium to full-bodied, lush, opulent Malbec to enjoy over the next 4-5 years, perhaps longer."Wine Advocate 91 points

Proemio Malbec Reserve Mendoza 2013 Proemio Malbec Reserve Mendoza 2013

An outstanding value from this fairly young Mendoza estate focused on producing balanced wines that are rich enough for big flavors and fresh enough to just drink.  This is a great example of their work, 100% Malbec from Uco Valley harvested ripe, fermented cool, and aged 12 months in French Oak. Tangy cherry, sweet currant, chocolate, herb and spice aromas and flavors shine in this creamy, rich, wine that finishes firm and fine.  A lot of value here in a Malbec with fine clarity and no excess weight.

Catena Malbec Mendoza 2013 Product #30312 (In Stock)
Catena Malbec Mendoza 2013 Catena Malbec Mendoza 2013

Argentina's most reliable Malbec has been delicious for so many years in a row that it's all too easy to pass over.  Don't - it's excellent!

"As I saw with the Cabernet, the 2013 Catena Malbec also feels fresher than the 2012. It is produced with fruit from Valle de Uco and some 20% from the Luján de Cuyo zone that fermented in a mixture of cement and stainless steel, and partly matured in barrels for some 10 months. The nose is full of violets and black cherries, and is quite perfumed. The palate has lively acidity that makes it extremely fresh, long, pleasant and easy to dink, and it cleanses your palate with the mineral-driven finish. A textbook Malbec to buy by the case. Drink or keep. This has to be one of the best vintages of this popular Malbec. The production figures are mind-boggling, as there are over one million bottles of this wine, so it should be quite easy to find."

Familia Zuccardi Malbec Q Mendoza 2013 Product #30427 (In Stock)
Familia Zuccardi Malbec Q Mendoza 2013 Familia Zuccardi Malbec Q Mendoza 2013

A more refined, pure, take on Malbec than in the past from tihs winery, with juicy fruit flavors and a smooth, supple, texture.

"The 2013 Malbec Q is sourced from La Consulta (Altamira) and Vista Flores. This wine has changed since 2010; now only 30% to 50% of the wine is oaked and the rest is matured in cement vats. The oak is imperceptible, and there are plenty of aromas of violets and blueberries with some aromatic herbs, all fruit. What Sebastian Zuccardi looks for is to have some herbal/countryside aromas and a lively palate with good acidity, which is what you find here. This is really tasty, with a fine, chalky tannin (from Altamira?) and just plain great. 120,000 bottles produced."Wine Advocate 91 points

Mendel Malbec Mendoza 2013 Product #30314 (In Stock)
Mendel Malbec Mendoza 2013 Mendel Malbec Mendoza 2013

"This wine has balance and finesse with blueberry, blackberry and some walnut character. Full body, fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Drink or hold."  James Suckling 93 points

"The 2013 Malbec is produced with the grapes from an ungrafted vineyard planted in 1928 in Mayor Drummond in Luján de Cuyo at some 980 meters altitude and another one in Perdriel. After hand-sorting the grapes, the wine macerated in 50- and 80-hectoliter tanks for three weeks. It matured in a combination of new, second- and third-use French oak barrels for 12-14 months. It has a lactic nose intermixed with aromas of flowers and fresh fruit. 2013 was a cooler year and the fruit had more malic acid, which might be the explanation for the lactic character I found here. It's also more floral and shows less aromas of plums so often found in warmer vintages. The medium-bodied palate shows good balance and is juicy with sweet tannins that make it very accessible. You feel the hand of a winemaker in this textbook Malbec. It should go an extra mile in bottle with the freshness of the year. 60,000 bottles produced."Wine Advocate 92 points
