Paul D Muller Thurgau RoMaNa 2015 Product #31239 (In Stock)
Paul D Muller Thurgau RoMaNa 2015 Paul D Muller Thurgau RoMaNa 2015

Paul Direder remains as committed as ever to his great value "liter bottle" value wines, but he's branching out to try new things - and we're very impressed!  This is 100% Muller-Thurgau, a much maligned German crossing that makes insipid wines at high yields.  Here very old vines give tiny numbers of berries and huge amounts of flavor and fun!  The wine smells fresh and ripe with notes of white peach, apricot, crushed herb and more jumping from the glass.  On the palate it's creamy in texture and loaded with juicy apricot fruit, more grassy herb and a hint of lychee.  Kind of like Sauvignon Blanc with apricot replacing the grapefruit, but clearly uniquely delicious.

Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2015 Product #31235 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2015 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2015

As the Post says, Austria's 2015s “are among the best white wines in the world in terms of value and quality, and they’re enjoying the best vintage in recent memory.”   Certainly, this is the best vintage of this stunning value single-vineyard Gruner to date!  There’s a refreshing salty brininess to the aromas here, along with fresh pear and meyer lemon. On the palate there’s a pleasing weightiness from that extra notch of ripeness 2015’s near perfect conditions brought that you wouldn’t expect from all those brisk, fresh aromas. That pear aroma takes on a lovely ripeness, and there’s a delicious ripe apple flavor as well, like biting into a fresh Honeycrisp. A refreshing, versatile white.

“Notes of crisp green pear and crunchy red apple are very appetizing, the palate is fresh and echoes these flavors and edges them with some spice and alcoholic heat, but also has a drive and energy of its own. Friendly and very moreish.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Best vintage ever here. Refreshing aromas of green apple, fresh peach, and orange-tinged citrus.  You’ll love how the ripe apple, pear, and pineapple fruit gets lifted across your palate by a faint accent of spicy ginger.  Your mouth will water as the clean, fresh, stone and orchard fruit flavors just get fresher from lingering notes of lemon and lime. A great poolside and party value!

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2014 Product #29941 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2014 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2014

Karl and Brigitta Steininger are most famous in Austria for their sparkling wines, but their Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner has always been one of our favorite wines from this classy estate in Langenlois.  In 2014, the Steinenger family had to take extra care to bring in perfectly ripe grapes, including 50% more people on the harvest team and a meticulous sorting in the vineyard and winery.  The effort paid off, though, in this fresh and vibrant wine full of pear, Granny Smith apple, lemon zest, white pepper and crushed stone minerality.  At just 12.5% abv, it’s light enough to make a wonderfully refreshing warm weather cocktail white.  But there’s more than enough drive and complexity to shine at table with sausages, salads, and fresh fish.

"Zippy, fresh conference pear fruit with just a little edge of white pepper and zingy lemon zest plays on this linear, light-bodied but ultrafresh wine. An almost-weightless lightness means that the wine will do well as an enlivening apéritif."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Josef Bauer Gruner Veltliner Ried Spiegel 2015 Product #30898 (In Stock)
Josef Bauer Gruner Veltliner Ried Spiegel 2015 Josef Bauer Gruner Veltliner Ried Spiegel 2015

Joe harvests this wine from a stunning vineyard running along the higher part of Wagram’s hill.  The old, very fine, windblown glacial soil called loess is deep here and provides the of water and nutrients Grüner needs for rich ripeness and texture.  But, the red pebbles lacing the soil give the wine lift and add snappy minerality.

Opens with big aromatics of green apple, ripe pear, chalky minerality and a spice note that comes entirely from Grüner and the soils (no oak on this wine at all).  In your month you’ll find it fleshy and mouthfilling, but with loads of lift and freshness to the sweet pear, roasted Clementine, and spice flavors.  A hint of something green and crunchy – Granny Smith?  Young celery? – gives the flavors a nice snap on the palate and right on through the crisp, dry, finish.  By all means drink this all by itself just for the joy of it, but try it with summer salads or crisp steamed snap peas.

As the Washington Post just said, this is a wine to "Upgrade a Summer's Eve."  "'Ried' is a new Austrian designation denoting a single-vineyard wine. This racy example has great focus and length, refreshing acidity and an appealing citrus character to pair well with all sorts of seafood. GREAT VALUE. **1/2 Exceptional/Excellent, Washington Post

Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner T26 Federspiel 2015 Product #30655 (In Stock)
Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner T26 Federspiel 2015 Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner T26 Federspiel 2015

Wow - just plain wow.  If you want to know why 2015 could be one of the greatest vintages ever for Austria's Grüner Veltliner, just try this.  The T26 Grüner comes from a small vineyard – called Frauenweingarten – not far from the winding Danube river in Wachau.  While others might declare this as a named single-vineyard wine and sell it for $25+, Martin feels it’s not quite distinguished enough for that honor.  But, when his importer, Klaus Wittauer, first tasted it from tank (number 26 in the winery), he convinced Marin to bottle it separately – and T26 Grüner was born.

Wachau Grüner has the potential to deliver more volume, richness and intensity than wines from nearby Kamptal, and that’s certainly what you’ll find here.  You can almost smell the concentration in the big aromas of fresh apple, sweet pea, crisp pear, sweet peach, and dusty white pepper. Take a sip and you’ll find it rich and loaded with extract on the palate where tangy pineapple, ripe stone fruit and crushed rock mineral notes fill and coat your mouth with intense flavor.  Sweet spice notes emerge with air and weave in and out of the long, dry, selzer-like, finish.  Stunning stuff that you'd pay $30-$50 for at better known Austrian estates.  It will pair beautifully with fresh asparagus – one of the few wines that works! – and delight with fresh fish, light poultry, and nutty lentil salad dishes.

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Product #30424 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013

A happy ending to a scary accident.  When Ernst Steindorfer fell and hit his head during the 2010 vintage, he temporarily lost his sense of smell.  Unable to evaluate his individual cuvees of Austria’s top native grapes - Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt – to choose Reserve lots, he elected to just blend an equal number of barrels from his best vineyard plots to create kind of a “baby-Reserve.”  It turned out so well, now he’s done it for a third time – and, with sense of smell intact, it’s even better!

About as fine a cookout red as you’ll find this year, the 2013 Apetlon serves up savory aromas of smoke, sour cherry, sweet blackberry, licorice and lavender.  The flavors are bright and juicy – roasted strawberry and blackberry puree – with complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to handle sausages or burgers and has enough rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to excel with lamb.

“A distinct whiff of tiny, black elderberries promises joy. This is joined by white pepper and iron oxide to play on luscious but soft red and black fruit. The spice is exciting and pervasive and highlighted by freshness. The fine balance this strikes is expressed as straight-laced elegance. What unpretentious, honest joy.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Steindorfer Passion Rose Burgenland 2015 Product #30975 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Passion Rose Burgenland 2015 Steindorfer Passion Rose Burgenland 2015

You’ve never tasted a rosé just like this, but once you try it, you’ll be back for more and more.  Ernst and Roland Steindorfer craft this uniquely delicious wine from a mix of Burgenland’s very best red grapes:  Blaufränkisch (for spicy dark fruit), St. Laurent (for freshness and a touch of herb), and Zweigelt (for juicy red and blue fruit).  Created for the Villa Vita Panonia resort to showcase Burgenland’s heritage and potential, we managed to get the Steindorfers to share a little of this beauty with us for you!

The color is stunning, a pale watermelon pink with just a touch of blood orange highlight.  It smells a bit like a summery strawberry patch, with notes of leafy herb and ripe berry accented by hints of orange peel and peach.  Take a sip and the flavors just explode on your palate, with layers and layers of intense strawberry, crushed cherry, watermelon, and orange zest given lift and freshness by accents of tangy berry juicy and a bit of bite from zesty orange peel and cranberry notes.  All of that makes this sound like a pretty pink from Provence, and it does nod in that direction, but there’s something uniquely delicious here too.  A winner for hot weather sipping, cookout and picnic partying, and enjoying right on through late summer and beyond.

So, what happens when you take a great still wine – in this case, the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Kamptal– and give it a little fizz?  Pure joy ensues!

Steininger is Kamptal’s top producer of sparkling wines and one of the very best in all of Austria.  The family specializes in single varietal, single vintage, fizz that showcases the character of the grape and growing season.  The 2013 Grüner Veltliner Sekt is a beauty, at once creamy and full of classic Grüner fruit and terrifically dry and vibrant.  The in-bottle secondary fermentation delivers plenty of fizz, but this still reads “Grüner” with bright apple, green pea, and white pepper notes.  Easy to sip on its own and fun to pair with savory sausage or freshwater fish.

The lowlands near Austria's glacial lake Neusiedlersee create the perfect conditions for great sweet wines - sunny days and foggy mornings that allow Botrytis - aka Noble Rot - to develop and concentrate grape sugars.  Here, Ernst Steindorfer uses shriveled berries of Scheurebe, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc to create a dense, layered, wine redolent of spiced honey, peach, pear, and apricot jam.  Round and deeply sweet on the palate, the brilliant acids come up on the finish to pull you back for another sip.

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2014 Product #31158 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2014 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2014

Karl and Eva Steininger make a range of delicious wines from Austria’s best white grape, and they intend the Grand Grü to be the top of their line.  The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner!  Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October.  The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large Acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

Pour a glass and you’ll meet generous aromas of creamy ripe pear, peach, and apricot.  Take a sip and you’ll find autumn fruits – golden pear and apple – plus lime zest and citrus with a dash of baking spice and hints of classing Grüner white pepper.  The texture is creamy and rich with plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and refreshing.  The finish is long, mouthwatering, and features a hint of lime, ginger and spice as it lingers.  Rich and round enough to handle the full range of Thanksgiving Dinner favorites and clean and juicy enough to keep you coming back for more.

It serves up wild aromatics of white and stone fruit, exotic spice, white pepper and a hint of caramel.  All those notes and more pour out across your palate in a rich wine with fine density and amazing cut, vibrancy, and drive.  The finish is wonderfully long, leaving mouthwatering fresh fruits, white pepper, and a touch of lemon zest lingering. Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml

One bitterly cold morning in January 2014, Anton Bauer and his team got up before dawn and harvested the last Grüner Veltliner berries of the 2013 growing season.  The frozen berries were rushed to the winery and immediately pressed, releasing tiny amounts of super-sugar-laden juicy and leaving the still solid water behind.  The thick, viscous, juice went into tank where it slowly fermented until the yeast could do no more, bringing the wine to 12.5% alcohol and leaving a stunning amount of rich sweetness and bracing acidity behind.

Despite the 2014 harvest date, this is technically a 2013 vintage wine.  But whatever you call it, the wine is brilliant.  Rich and creamy with layers of apricot, peach and white fruit aromas and flavors, there's a touch of honey and caramel for depth and bracing, tangy, acidity for freshness.  Sits on your palate for minutes after each sip, this is a rare treat you won't want to miss.
