Val De Salis Chardonnay Pays d'Oc 2013 Product #28457 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Chardonnay Pays d'Oc 2013 Val De Salis Chardonnay Pays d'Oc 2013

The Gau family is unusual for Languedoc growers – they make only “single varietal” wines rather than the field blends of Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Syrah common all around them.  This 100% Chardonnay thrives in the rocky soils and warm climate here, and delivers lovely aromas of ripe pear and apple with pretty floral accents.  The flavors start crisp and refreshing and get even better with a little air, with sweet Bosc pear, peach and apricot flavors gaining complexity from the barest hint of caramel and mineral.  No oak here to interfere with the fruit, and we suspect a little Viognier has snuck into the Chardonnay vines, giving this much more perfume and peach than normally found this far south.  A luscious mouthful of wine with a crisp, clean, finish that will delight at a party and make you think of springtime when sipped on its own.

Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014 Product #29849 (In Stock)
Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014 Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014

This ripe and fresh no-oak Chardonnay comes from stony vineyards deep within the heart of France's Languedoc region, not far from the famed Mas de Daumass Gassac.  The vineyards lie in a valley northwest of Montpellier where warm sunshine promotes ripening and cool nighttime breezes from the Mediterranean help retain freshness and fruit flavors.

Fresh aromas of juicy pear, golden apple and a hints of peach and honeysuckle lead to a nice, generous, mouthful of fresh fruit, toasted nut, and honeysuckle.  The crisp, fruity, acids build from the middle to the back to give this a lip-smacking, mouthwatering, finish as pear, apple and floral notes linger nicely.  A fine all-around Chardonnay for fish, chicken, or simply sipping.

Val De Salis Viognier 2013 Product #28362 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Viognier 2013 Val De Salis Viognier 2013

The kind of wine that we hope for out of the South of France - a delicious value that way over-delivers on its modest price.  Here's a ripe, friendly, bottle of Viognier that delivers straight ahead peach, orange and honeysuckle aromas and flavors, a creamy texture, and just a dash of mineral on the finish.  A nice interplay between sweet, ripe, fruit and tangy acid at the end make this a charming companion at table and a supple summer sipper, too.

Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Product #29364 (In Stock)
Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012 Marquis De Hautevigne Buzet Cabernet Merlot 2012

Like it's neighbor Cahors, Buzet was once a bustling source of robust reds for export to England and beyond (before those nasty Bordelais started taxing wine moving up the Gironde to the sea). Today, it's starting to reemerge as a fine value source for rich, soft, Bordeaux-style wines without the Bordeaux price tag.

This little beauty from the Buzet co-op is a fine example of what can be done with Bordeaux grapes here in France's Southwest - and one of the few no-sulfur added wines in the store.  Cabernet for structure and Merlot for plum fruit with time in fine oak barrels (the co-op makes their own!) for a soft, supple, complexity.  Plump, ripe cherry and currant fruit gets just the right touch of spice, tobacco, and fresh herb to go with the finely tannic finish. Very good value here.

Alain Jaume Cotes Du Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2013 Product #29575 (In Stock)
Alain Jaume Cotes Du Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2013 Alain Jaume Cotes Du Ventoux Les Gelinottes 2013

Les Gelinottes vineyard lies at the foot of towering Mount Ventoux, where Rhone sunshine and warmth is balanced by a nightly stream of cool air flowing down the mountainside.  It’s equal parts Grenache and Syrah, harvested ripe and fermented cool in stainless steel tanks.  Give it a swirl and you’ll love the bold, lush, aromas of purple fruits – plums, blueberries – with a touch of baked strawberry and smoked stone.  On the palate there’s plenty of exuberant raspberry, blackberry, and red plum fruit and more earthy/stony accents.  For all the fruit, this is juicy, fresh and dry (rather than sweet or roasted) and finishes with crisp tannins and a mouthwatering plum/sour cherry acidity.  A great sipper and even better match for any casual meal.  A red hot value!

“Copious aromas of strawberries, black cherries and raspberries jump from the glass of this simple but fruity, savory, medium-bodied red with no hard edges. Consume it over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 86 points

Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2014 Product #29638 (In Stock)
Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2014 Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2014

Having converted his Clos des Grand Primos vineyard to certified organic farming, Michel Bedouet is delivering on Muscadet’s potential.  The vineyard is a rocky mess of granite, schist and gneiss - no fun to farm, but wonderful for Muscadet's Melon de Bourgogne grape.  The 2014 delivers all the saline minerality and chiseled cut you'd expect from fine Muscade, but also a generous roundness to the texture and a plenty of ripe apple and tangy lemon-lime fruit. You’ll taste the benefits of extended aging on the lees – spent yeast cells left after fermentation – in the wine’s wet stone and chalk minerality, but love how the fresh fruit holds center stage and pumps on through a long finish of lemon, apple, lime zest and fresh thyme.  Sure, it’s a great wine for shellfish, but you’ll love it with almost any summertime dish or simply all on its own.

Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2014 Product #29695 (In Stock)
Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2014 Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2014

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  The 2014 harvest yielded nicely ripe Chardonnay fruit with plenty of heft and balancing acidity.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with nice energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  A tad more cut than the 2013, but just as pure and mineral and delicious.

Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013 Dom Du Pere Caboche VDP Vaucluse Blanc 2013

We don't really know what is in this white Rhone field blend, but it's easy enough to recognize how delicious it is!  Peach and apricot stone fruit take center stage with something aromatic riding on top (Viognier?) and a snap of citrus (Sauvignon?) on the bright finish. At once rich and fresh, it's more delicious and refreshing than most $15 white Rhones and much longer on the lingering finish.

Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013 Product #29266 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013 Val De Salis Malbec Pays d'Oc 2013

Malbec surged to international fame on the strength of the darkly fruited, ripe, and lush examples grown in Argentina’s Mendoza vineyards.  But, before that, it was the basis of one of the most famous wines of late medieval Europe, the intense, earthy, bitingly tannic “black wines” of Cahors in the Southwest of France. The 2012 Val De Salis Malbec from vineyards near the French walled city of  Carcassonne sort of splits the difference in these two styles to deliver a big mouthful of juicy, complex, fruity fun.

You’ll find plenty of New World fruit here, with generous dollops of red plum, raspberry and tangy pie cherry in the aromas and on the palate.  And, you’ll also notice the Old World notes of fresh leather, licorice root, and the notes of lavender, thyme, and black olive the French call garrigue.  On the finish, the New/Old World influence merge to deliver lingering red fruit, licorice, and lavender flavors, bright acidity, and just the right dose of dusty tannin.  What you won’t find is any oak to get in the way of the pure, clean, and refreshing flavors.  Structured enough to sing with burgers, pizza, grilled chicken or most any everyday food, but soft and generous enough to just sip at a party.  And, a steal at this price!

Cadastres Picpoul De Pinet 2014 Product #29734 (In Stock)

This 100% estate grown Picpoul de Pinet clearly demonstrates just how under-rated this variety is. You’ll find pretty aromas of white flowers, lemon/lime citrus, and anise/fennel notes to start.  Then a crisp, minerally, texture with tart granny smith apple, green melon, and lemon/lime flavors and a clean, dry, finish.  This is just a great all-around daily white, with enough flavor and body to shine by itself at a party and enough complexity and depth to pair well with freshwater fish and lighter poultry dishes.  Tremendous value!

Ch Recougne Bordeaux Superieur 2011 375ml Product #29814 (In Stock)

Half Bottles!  Perfect for an evening sip.

"A winner from the Milhade family, Chateau Recougne has a reputation for lasting 20-30 years in the bottle in many vintages. I do not think the 2011 has that much staying power, but it over-delivers in body, richness, density and length. It is a shockingly good effort displaying a dark ruby color as well as abundant notes of earth, licorice and black currants, surprising body, richness and depth. A major sleeper of the vintage, it should drink well for 7-8 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Product #28782 (In Stock)
Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013 Ch Haut-Pasquet Bordeaux Blanc 2013

Back in the old days, pretty much all white Bordeaux was a blend of the region’s three complementary grapes:  Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  As Loire Valley and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became more popular in the 1980s, Bordeaux growers began phasing out first Muscadelle (too hard to grow) and then Semillon (usually pulled up in favor of Cabernet and Merlot).  The resulting Sauvignon-dominant (or 100% Sauvignon) white Bordeauxs can be a lot of refreshing, pool-side, fun – but they lack more traditional wine’s complexity of flavors and mellow, food-friendly, textures.

So, finding a traditional blend like this one is a real treat, especially at this great value price.  Give it a swirl and you’ll find a classic white Bordeaux nose of lemon/tangerine fruit, grapefruit pith, a bit of fresh mown grass, and the note of wet wool that Semillon brings to Bordeaux.  With air, a note of passion fruit and crushed savory herb emerges.  It’s light to medium-bodied and very fresh and happy in the mouth with flavors of lemon drop, tangerine, crushed herb and passion fruit puree.  On the finish, the fresh lemon and lime zest character comes forward and you’ll notice your mouth watering as the lemon and herb flavors linger on.   A lovely wine for any shellfish and herb dish or for salads with goat cheese.

Redolent of ripe cherries, fresh strawberry, sweet watermelon, and just a touch of fresh herb, it starts off bright, spreads out to coat your palate, and finishes clean, fresh, and dry.  The half-bottle is perfect to start off an evening or enjoy at a picnic, and it even fits snugly into an insulated beer koozie (not that YOU’D ever drink straight from the bottle, but perhaps your friends have less restraint.)

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2014 Product #29263 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2014 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2014

Our first 2014 rosé is a winner!  This snappy pink beauty starts out as the blend used in the Guilhem Rouge.  About 10 hours after the grapes for that wine are crushed and starting to ferment, about 20% of the juice is bled off and goes into new tanks to finish its fermentation.  As soon as you see the Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rosé, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, nicely round but still light and fresh.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!
