Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2012 Product #27154 (In Stock)
Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2012 Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2012

The motto here is “Gascony seen by a feminine point of view.”  Other than the fact that the estate is led by women, I’m not sure what that really means, but this is a heck of a delicious white for Spring and Summer sipping.  The blend is 80% Colombard – the main white grape in Gascony – for bright acidity and round texture and 20% Sauvignon Blanc for a big burst of fruit and touch of fresh hay.  The fruit flavors coat your palate with ripe green melon, golden apple, and orange/tangerine flavors set off by lemony acids, a dash of minerality, and a whiff of fresh cut grass.  A great summer sipper that delivers Sauvignon Blanc-like flavors that have been softened and tamed by the Colombard.  Yummy with salads, asparagus, shellfish, or just to sip on its own.

Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Product #27594 (In Stock)
Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006 Ch Pericou Bordeaux Superieur 2006

Here's a 2006 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon (mainly Merlot) Right Bank Bordeaux that’s perfectly ripe at just 13% and perfectly mellowed from time in barrel and cellar. On first pour, both the color and aromas are still show very youthful, with primary scents of fresh red currant and black raspberry accented by notes of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and spice. With a little air, the aromas get darker and richer, showing off this wine's beautiful ripeness.

Seven years time has softened the palate to a silky smooth texture and allowed the pretty berry and currant fruit to come forward.  You're starting to find notes of age here as earthy tobacco, fresh mushroom, and cedar peak out, but the overall thrust is still behind the juicy, fresh, fruit.  Very light, sliky, tannins come up at the end to provide classic Bordeaux structure for food – especially that classic pairing of maturing Bordeaux and lamb!  You can enjoy this now while dinner is in the oven and will be delighted to keep on quaffing it until all the clean-up is done.  Fresh, fruity, delicious, and attractively packaged in an authentic Bordeaux wood case – a fantastic value!

Val De Salis Chardonnay 2012 Product #27992 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Chardonnay 2012 Val De Salis Chardonnay 2012

The Gau family has owned these tidy vineyards not far from the medieval city of Carcassonne in the heart of the Languedoc for 100 years.  But, grapes have grown here far longer and the vineyards were thriving when the phylloxera louse made its appearance in France in the 1870s.  As vineyards all around began to wither and die, the owners here took advantage of an unusual access to water and began flooding their vineyards every spring for 50 days – just long enough to drown phylloxera larva.  The Gau family continues this tradition, making this one of the very few European vineyards where wine grapes grow on their own roots, rather than being grafted on to American grape rootstocks.

The Gau family is unusual for Languedoc growers in another way – they make only “single varietal” wines rather than the field blends of Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Syrah common all around them.  This purportedly 100% Chardonnay thrives in the rocky soils and warm climate here, and delivers lovely aromas of ripe pear and apple with pretty floral accents.  The flavors start crisp and refreshing and get even better with a little air, with sweet Bosc pear, peach and apricot flavors gaining complexity from the barest hint of caramel and mineral.  No oak here to interfere with the fruit, and we suspect a little Viognier has snuck into the Chardonnay vines, giving this much more perfume and peach than normally found this far south.  A luscious mouthful of wine with a crisp, clean, finish that will delight at a party and make you think of springtime when sipped on its own.

Val De Salis Malbec Pays D'oc 2012 Product #28038 (In Stock)
Val De Salis Malbec Pays D'oc 2012 Val De Salis Malbec Pays D'oc 2012

Malbec surged to international fame on the strength of the darkly fruited, ripe, and lush examples grown in Argentina’s Mendoza vineyards.  But, before that, it was the basis of one of the most famous wines of late medieval Europe, the intense, earthy, bitingly tannic “black wines” of Cahors in the Southwest of France. The 2012 Val De Salis Malbec from vineyards near the French walled city of  Carcassonne sort of splits the difference in these two styles to deliver a big mouthful of juicy, complex, fruity fun.

You’ll find plenty of New World fruit here, with generous dollops of red plum, raspberry and tangy pie cherry in the aromas and on the palate.  And, you’ll also notice the Old World notes of fresh leather, licorice root, and the notes of lavender, thyme, and black olive the French call garrigue.  On the finish, the New/Old World influence merge to deliver lingering red fruit, licorice, and lavender flavors, bright acidity, and just the right dose of dusty tannin.  What you won’t find is any oak to get in the way of the pure, clean, and refreshing flavors.  Structured enough to sing with burgers, pizza, grilled chicken or most any everyday food, but soft and generous enough to just sip at a party.  And, a steal at this price!

The kind of wine that we hope for out of the South of France - a delicious value that way over-delivers on its modest price.  Here's a ripe, friendly, bottle of Viognier that delivers straight ahead peach, orange and honeysuckle aromas and flavors, a creamy texture, and just a dash of mineral on the finish.  A nice interplay between sweet, ripe, fruit and tangy acid at the end.

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Product #27994 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE

Half Bottle!  Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element."Wine Spectator 89 points

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2013 Product #28005 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2013 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2013

Our first 2013 rose is a beauty!  As soon as you see the Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rosé, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, nicely round but still light and fresh.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Product #28132 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2012

SOLD OUT NOW - But More Arrives Tuesday!

Nothing super fancy here - just a really, really, good Cotes du Rhone at a great value price to enjoy with everything from burgers to lamb chops.  About half Grenache with 30% Syrah and then equal parts Carignan and Cinsault, mostly from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s by former owner Count de Regis de Gatimel.  Most of the luscious, ripe, fruit ferments and ages in tank but part of the Syrah sees barrel to add richness and depth.

A good deal richer and darker than the very popular 2011 edition, the 2012 Segries Cotes du Rhone gushes with aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.  A winner.

"This estate has been on a qualitative hot streak for more than a decade... The 2012 Cotes du Rhone is composed of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Cinsault. It is a fruity, pedal-to-the-metal, peppery, black currant and black cherry-scented and flavored, medium-bodied Cotes du Rhone displaying hints of lavender and garrigue. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

"Full-bodied but approachable, this wine shows a slightly horsey edge on the nose, and pleasingly suede-like flavors and textures underlying the raspberry fruit. It’s a complex mélange that should likely be consumed over the next couple of years. BEST BUY!"Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Loads of authentic Languedoc character in this classic, if a tad under-priced, blend of 35% Syrah, 30% Carignan, 25% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre. From vineyards on the border between Minervois and Corbieres, Millegrand's fruit benefits from the "Carcassonne Gateway" effect - a perfect blend of Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pyrenees climates.  It's gutsy and concentrated, full of dark red and black fruit with accents of Languedoc herb and earth.  Distinctly earthy on the ripe, powerful, finish, this is a fantastic match for roast lamb or grilled pork.

Champteloup Rose d'Anjou 2013 Product #28289 (In Stock)
Champteloup Rose d'Anjou 2013 Champteloup Rose d'Anjou 2013

While we in the USA tend to focus on rosé from the South of France, in Paris pink wine from Anjou in the nearby Loire Valley gets plenty of attention.  And, this is classic Parisian bistro rosé, made from from 70% Grolleau for fruit and 30% Cabernet Franc for herbal notes and spice.  Gentle aromas of cherry, strawberry, and crushed fresh herb lead to a juicy, fruity, mouthful of red berry fruit and a bit more herb.  A hint of watermelon candy comes up in the middle and the finish is frankly fruity and round, but dry and clean.  Cherry and watermelon Jolly Rancher notes linger on.  A fun wine to just sip on it's own and a great match for Asian dishes or anything with fruit.

2013 will be difficult for red Bordeaux, but the dry whites (like this one) excelled with that perfect blend of ripe fruit and vigorous, juicy, acids.  The 2013 edition of our best-selling Bordeaux Blanc ever delivers on the promise of the vintage.  It opens with its usual generous scents of white pineapple, honeysuckle, and orange zest.  The 100% Sauvignon Blanc fruit delivers more of the same on the palate plus a bit of firm green melon, tangerine, and a bite of citrus pith and oil.  A tad more elegant and fresh than the 2012, it's even more a great all-purpose white for parties, salads, fish, or just sipping on a warm afternoon.

Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Product #27452 (In Stock)
Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  Rain, hail, and wind cut the Chardonnay harvest by about 40% in 2012, giving the Couillauds unusually concentrated, powerful, fruit.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with super energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  This will be fantastic with rich seafood dishes and fresh cheeses.

At their best, 2011 white Burgundies hint at 2008's vibrant minerality but deliver softer, more easy to enjoy now, pleasure.  That's the case here.  A fine, honest, bottle of Chardonnay with notes of green apple, chalk, limes kin and toasted nuts.  Clean and fresh from start to finish - a little Chablis-like, actually - with good length and a touch of saline mineral on the mouthwatering finish.  Very classy Bourgogne, especially at this price!
