Conde Villar Vinho Verde 2013 Product #28525 (In Stock)
Conde Villar Vinho Verde 2013 Conde Villar Vinho Verde 2013

A classic spin on Portugal's "green wine" from Quintas Das Arcas in Portugal’s northwest corner.  It’s made from three traditional grapes - 40% Loureiro, 30% Trajadura, and 30% Arinto.  The high percentage of Loureiro gives the first hint of the quality here:  Lourerio is the hardest to grow of the three and gives the wine a boost in aromatic complexity.

The 2012 Vinho Verde at its vibrant, youthful, best.  The Loureiro in the blend delivers a burst of intensely fresh citrus and green pear fruit, lime skin, and floral aromas.  Take a sip and you’ll discover more citrus fruit, wet stones, and a touch of yeasty freshness.  The finish is bright, crisp, and dry with lingering mineral/yeast and lime notes.  A perfect wine to sip on its own on a warm, late-summer, night or to enjoy with shellfish, salads, or grilled veggies.

Justino's Izidro Madeira Fine Rich NV Justino's Izidro Madeira Fine Rich NV

An outstanding in real Madeira for sipping or use in rich sauces or soups.  The light tawny color and heady aromas and flavors of toasted nuts, dark caramel, and burnt orange peel come from barrel aging and exposure to high heat for 3+ months - the process that "Madeirizes" the wine and creates its distinctive tang.  Lightly sweet to balance the zingy acids.

Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009 Product #28094 (In Stock)
Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009 Conceito Contraste Tinto 2009

"The 2009 Contraste red is a Douro blend, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz and Sousao, aged 70% in 3rd year barriques of French oak. This is never terribly concentrated, but it is quite luscious this year. Despite the modest oak treatment, it still has a certain creamy nuance on opening. But you pay the price of admission here for the flavorful fruit. Softly textured, sexy, ripe and easily approachable, with moderate tannins, this goes down easy and just plain tastes great. Yet, it does have character, too; it just needs an hour of air to show it. With air, some herbal nuances pop up, it comes together well, becomes silkier and displays increasingly fine balance. I liked this more and more, despite a relatively straightforward beginning. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 89 points

Conceito Contraste Branco 2013 Product #29113 (In Stock)
Conceito Contraste Branco 2013 Conceito Contraste Branco 2013

A brilliant sipping and food-friendly white that opens with wonderfully fresh aromas of passionfruit, Granny Smith, honeysuckle, and sweet herb.  At once rich and fresh on the palate with bright white peach, apricot, lemon, pineapple, and more passionfruit flavors, this finds an extra gear with pretty accents of fresh white flowers and just a hint of buttered hazelnut.  There's a seltzer-like minerality on the palate and that continues through on the finish where juicy lemon and passionfruit acidity pulses through to make your mouth water nicely. You’ll love this as a cocktail white now, but try it with fresh fish dusted with herb and a squeeze of lemon.

"The 2013 Contraste is a blend of Rabigato, Codega do Larinho, Codega and Viosinho, with 30% of the juice aged in new French oak, the rest in tank. This sings for its beautiful freshness and elegance. Vibrant, sunny and lively, I do think it is a match for the 2012, showing its fine purity of fruit and beautiful integration of oak. It manages to maintain a certain, if subtle, stonewashed feel despite the oak. Drink it on the younger side, but I expect it to hold reasonably well and perhaps even better than I think. Drink now-2018."Wine Advocate 90 points

Conceito Contraste Tinto 2012 Product #29114 (In Stock)
Conceito Contraste Tinto 2012 Conceito Contraste Tinto 2012

Most Portuguese wines are first and foremost about the fruit - usually dark purple/black fruit flavors like blackberry, black cherry, black plum, boysenberry, etc. - often ripe to the point of showing roasted or jam-like character.  "Contraste" really belongs in the name off this wine, because it goes off in another direction entirely.  Yes, the fruit is ripe and generous - if a touch more fresh and with red cherry and even strawberry accents not often found in the Douro - but the soul of the wine is the green tobacco herbal notes and firm slate-dust minerality that coats your palate and lingers with a stone and iron-like tang.  Definitely not a cocktail sipper, this is serious red wine for hearty foods where it will refresh your palate and lift roasted, smoked, or grilled herb-rubbed meats to new heights of deliciousness.

First, yes - this is a full 750ml bottle!  It's also a fascinating take on white Port.  Because the white wine aged in wood for 8 years, this drinks like a fantastically vibrant, youthful, tawney Port.  Full of dried apricot and raisin fruit and lightly caramelized walnut and almond flavors, it's lightly sweet and super long on the palate.  Delicous!

Cedro Do Noval Tinto Duriense 2009 Product #28898 (In Stock)
Cedro Do Noval Tinto Duriense 2009 Cedro Do Noval Tinto Duriense 2009

A big, ripe, powerful wine that could probably age for 10+ years - but I'd just pop one open the next time you fire up the grill and get a steak sizzling.

"The 2009 CEDRO DO NOVAL is 50% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 10% Syrah (just a dollop this year) and 10% Tinta Roriz. It is “Duriense” instead of Douro because of the Syrah. In Noval’s lineup, this is quickly becoming the one to grab, because the quality is high and the price is low. It is becoming a repetitive overachiever. Despite containing only 10% Syrah, it has that trademark Syrah earthiness on the nose. Tightly wound, crisp and earthy, it is beautifully wrought and quite ageworthy. Juicy and remarkably flavorful on the finish, thanks to the acidity, it is a fine achievement at this price level and one of the better values in the vintage. The only problem for Noval is that many will wonder why they should trade up to the winery’s prestige wines at several times the Cedro’s price. On current tastes, I won’t suprised if many think this is the equal of Noval’s pricier wines and at various times in their development I thought so, too, although that is certainly not the final answer. With a few years passage of time, the equation will no doubt change and they may separate more. There isn’t much question about one thing, however—this is a fine value, a big, relatively deep and powerful Cedro that doesn’t disappoint. The alcohol does sometimes pop its head up (only 14% listed, though) and at other times is not at all noticeable. There were 4,000 cases produced. Drink 2013-2022."Wine Advocate 92 points

Conceito Tinto 2011 Product #29111 (In Stock)
Conceito Tinto 2011 Conceito Tinto 2011

The aromas in Rita's breakthrough Douro Valley dry red fuse the dark, intensely ripe, scents of perfectly ripe wild berries and black cherry with barrel notes of vanilla, cedar, and spice to create something astonishing - this smells like the very best, most exotic, beef stock you can possibly imagine.  The wild and captivating complexity of the nose carries through in the mouth to deliver a manage of flavors I can list - black raspberry, plum, licorice, sweet spice, anise, coffee, bitter chocolate, warm stones - but that I can't really describe. The blend of sweet and savory aromas and flavors is unique, as is the level of intense minerality that shines through from first sniff through the lip-smacking finish.  I especially love how a kick of black cherry juice, coffee, and sweet spice pop out right at the back of the palate, adding an element of fun to this serious, sophisticated, and stunning wine.  Drink some for Christmas dinner but have enough on hand to follow it for a decade or more.  An achievement, but only 830 cases made.

"Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz. Fragrant dark fruit not obscured by the oak. Tight and chewy and both pure and complex. Quite a grip but has a generous softness of fruit to fill out the structure. Long."  Jancisrobinson.com 17+/20

"The 2011 Tinto is the winery’s estate bottling, an old-vines (80 years) field blend from Quinta do Cabido, aged for 20 months in French oak (only 50% new). Showing nice concentration, yet that balanced and lively feel typical of the 2011 vintage, this has pulled in some of the oak now and displays more of its crisp, transparent and wonderfully fresh feel. Beautifully elegant and perfectly conceived, it is harmonious and potentially brilliant, making it worth an uptick for its potential. The only remaining question here is whether it will develop more complexity. I think that it will. This looks like the best red Conceito has ever made. It’s a nice value, too. Drink 2015-2026." Wine Advocate 95 points

"Both rich and well structured, this shows sumptuous ripe plums that are contrasted with acidity that brings out a tenser side to the wine. It also indicates its aging potential. To allow the tannins and powerful structure time to develop, drink from 2018."Wine Enthusiast 93 points

Conceito Branco 2011 Product #29112 (In Stock)
Conceito Branco 2011 Conceito Branco 2011

Rita first came to international attention with the 2007 edition of this white, and Wine Advocate once again named this their top Douro white in 2011.  It’s a field blend of of Rabigato, Côdega de Larinho, Códega, Viosinho and Gouveio from an ancient, pre-phylloxera, vineyard in the cool Teja Valley, far above the Douro River.  Rita fermented and aged the just ripe fruit for 10 months in a blend of French and Caucasian oak, about 40% new.

This takes the bright, fresh, fruit flavors of the Contraste Branco and adds a layer of white Burgundy sophistication and complexity.  Aromas of apple, apricot, grilled pineapple, smoke, crushed chervil, and wet stones.  The flavors follow the nose and add creamy vanilla, toasted nut, and brown spice and find the crushed fresh herb coming forward.  An anise note emerges on the back and carries through to the long, broad, and super-fresh finish that just keeps pumping out juicy acids, bitter citrus pith, and salty mineral flavors for a minute or more. A stunner for now and years to come.

"More minerally and longer than the Contraste and a little more concentrated and with greater ageing potential. Citrus, grapefruit, mineral and really good length. Sophisticated with a line of freshness and drive."  JancisRobinson.com 17/20

"If the ‘11 Contraste is sunny and exhilarating, this adds the solidity and power, while remaining fresh, pure and bright. It has oak, but it seems so fresh that I can taste the tank. It ends with a gripping finish. The ‘10 may brood a bit more, but this may well be the best wine here and I’ll be interested to see how it ages. It combines that youthful exuberance with fine depth and solidity. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 93 points

"This rich, wood-aged wine is balanced and stylish. It shows the great potential for white wine in the Douro, with its panoply of flavors ranging from creamed apple to white peach, with a hint of herb. It’s a fruity offering that will age for at least 3–4 years."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004 Product #27905 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004 Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 2004

The Barros family made their name in the Deuro during the 20th Century before selling the brand and focusing their energies on dry wines at Quinta Dona Matilde.  But, Filippe Barros and family aren’t quite ready to give up Port just yet, and they’ve tapped their broad range of contacts to create this brilliant 9 year-old beauty.

A lovely amber color with shimmering gold and rose highlights.  Big, lush, aromas of caramelized nuts, toffee, orange peel, and dried fruits lead to deep flavors of more toffee, toasted pecan, blood orange, dried redcurrant, and more.  Although it’s richly textured and weighty, a beam of brilliant acidity runs through the wine, giving freshness and a dry, very lightly tannic, finish.  This will thrill any fan of 10 year Tawny Port, matching that style’s freshness and fruit character and adding on more subtlety and complexity.

Broadbent Colheita Madeira 1996 Product #21462 (In Stock)
Broadbent Colheita Madeira 1996 Broadbent Colheita Madeira 1996

A magnificent, nutty and lightly sweet, Madeira with a classic bite and salty tang at the end.  Beautiful with cheese or nuts or caramel desserts.  Because Madeira is already oxidized and "cooked," it's more or less indestructible.  Open a bottle, leave it on the counter, and enjoy over months (or longer!).

"The 1996 Colheita was aged in oak casks for five years and then bottled. It has a very well-defined bouquet of dried figs, lemon rind, dried herbs and a touch of dates that soar from first opening and continue to bloom over several hours. The palate is fresh and lively. This is a more feminine Colheita with a crisp thread of acidity: lovely touches of marmalade and orange rind counterbalancing its viscous texture. It exhibits impressive cohesion and linearity to create a Colheita that has intent and purpose, full of energy and race."Wine Advocate 93 points

Conceito Vintage Port 2007 Product #23267 (In Stock)
Conceito Vintage Port 2007 Conceito Vintage Port 2007

The 2007 Port vintage is shaping up as a beauty, so it's no surprise that Rita Ferreria Marques had delivered an exciting wine. A touch more polished than the powerful 2005 Vintage, we agree with Wine Advocate - this is "a sleeper of the vintage" and great value, too!

"The purple-colored 2007 Conceito Vintage Port offers up an attractive perfume of mineral, pencil lead, blackberry, and black currants. This leads to an elegantly styled wine with excellent volume, depth, and grip. It has enough structure to evolve for a decade along with layers of savory fruit for balance. This lengthy effort will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2027. It is a sleeper of the vintage. As an aside, Jonas Gustafson, the importer, has an outstanding Spanish portfolio so it is not a surprise to me that he has uncovered this little-known producer." Wine Advocate 90 points

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24683 (In Stock)
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

Usually my personal favorite of the line-up (although 2007 Fonseca is pretty impressive!), the 2009 Taylor Fladgate delivers the Bordeaux-like elegance and class it's known for. On the nose black fruit with notes of raspberry and plum and hints of graphite and cedar. The flavors stay black with currant and cherry appearing plus dark licorice root, apple skin, and more graphite. The deep flavors stay over top of the firm, grippy, mouth-coating tannins that keep everything focused and almost elegant (if such a big wine can be elegant). Love it.

"Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark."Wine Advocate 95 points

The palate is taut and crisp on the entry with tangy marmalade, quince, a touch of cough candy and orange peel. It has superb acidity with a very fine, elegant finish that is absolutely delightful."Wine Advocate 91 points

Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011 Product #27907 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011 Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011

The Barros family knows a thing or two about Vintage Port, with family founder Manoel Moreira de Barros starting the top-notch Barros estate in the early 1900s.  Quinta Dona Matilde was already highly respected when Barros acquired it in 1925, although it was equally famous for being one of the most difficult to farm vineyards in the Douro Valley.  Dona Matilde passed out of the family with the sale of the entire Barros group in 2006, but less than a year later Manoel Moreira’s grandson, Manuel Angelo Barros, was able to buy it back and return the Barros family to the Port and fine wine business.

Many of you have loved the family’s 2007 Vintage Port when we’ve offered it in the past, but importer Jonas Gustafsson and Filippe Barros agree with me that the 2011 is a substantial step up in quality and sophistication.  The wine opens with lovely aromas of dried blackcurrant and raisin with a touch of leafy tobacco, wet stone minerality, and vanilla spice.  The aromas carry through on the rich palate where nutty, spicy, undertones emerge and the sense of minerality gets stronger.  As you’d hope for in a young Vintage Port, there’s very nice grip to the firm tannins and plenty of juicy, refreshing, acids to keep everything fresh and focused. The chewy tannins don’t get in the way of the long finish where the minerality and spice notes really shine.  Try this now with walnuts and Stilton cheese or cellar it for as long as you’d like to.

Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24682 (In Stock)
Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

If Croft is the Aussie Shiraz of the line, then Fonseca is the Napa Cabernet. The story here is all about power - powerful aromatics, powerful palate, powerful tannins. Big aromas feature dark black currant and plum accented by notes of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee with citrus and menthol overtones. In the mouth, firm and packed with muscular black fruit, dark chocolate, and licorice root flavors. As the velvet cloaked tannins well up on the finish, a beautiful floral note emerges as well. This probably isn't as fine as the 2007, but it's outstanding nonetheless!

"The Fonseca 2009 has a very ripe sweet prune and fig-tinged bouquet that is very precocious. Touches of smoke, raisin and dark plum begin to emerge with time, though it needs to evolve a little more cohesion. The palate is full-bodied with saturated tannins, luscious dark berried fruit, touches of pomegranate, fig and dates that lead to a gently grippy, persistent finish."Wine Advocate 93 points
