While red versions of Pinotage – South Africa’s distinctive crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault – are a bit funky and, for most, an acquired taste, you won’t have to work very hard to fall in love with this dry Pink version. Riebeek has been growing grapes and making wine in South Africa’s Swartland region since 1941, making them an old-timer in a region that’s exploded with wineries in recent years. The weather and soils in this part of the Western Cape are Mediteranian, very similar to Provence and Bandol in France. Not surprisingly, olives thrive here along, of course, with wine grapes.
The 2012 Cape Pinotage Rosé is picked right at the beginning of harvest to preserve freshness and acidity. After crushing and a short maceration to extract a pale, shimmering, pink color, the wine is fermented dry in stainless steel and bottled and shipped young for immediate enjoyment. If you don’t see the bottle, you’d swear this was from the hills overlooking St. Tropez and the Mediteranian Sea. The aromas are redolent of fresh strawberry and tangy cherry fruit accented by a dash of crushed Provencal herb. Nice body here (despite the 13% alcohol), the berry/cherry fruit and herb get lifted by a note of orange peel freshness. Long and mouthwatering on the back with just the right amount of chalky mineral and zingy acid. A fine, versatile, delicious dry rosé to enjoy by yourself or – at this price – to share with a crowd! - Stellenryck Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Product #27272 (In Stock)

We made a conscious decision to really dig into South Africa recently, and great values like this crisp beauty are exactly why. A lighter take on Sauvignon Blanc than New Zealand's grapefruit bombs, Stellenryck's delivers citrusy refreshment, with aromas of lemon, lime zest, and a hint of herbaceousness. On the palate it's got plenty of zippy Sauvignon character, but is first and foremost thirst quenching. Stock up for parties, light spring dishes, and warm evenings on the deck.
- Paul Cluver Chardonnay 2011 Product #27160 (In Stock)

This great value Chardonnay opens with a classic, Burgundian nose - savory, smoky, and a hint of sophisticated oak. Just-ripe fruit peaks out after a swirl or two: golden apple, a bit of pear. On the palate, what stands out the most is what doesn't stand out. All the elements are balanced and of a piece. Ripe orchard fruits, nice, creamy weight, and a clean finish with a hint of a savory, leesy element that makes you want to reach for something to eat.
In keeping with the winery's focus on biodiversity and green agriculture, the wine is barrel fermented in a selection of all French oak barrels of varying ages with 100% wild yeast. Some barrel rolling and lees stirring and limited malolactic fermentation keeps the buttery flavors savory and compelling rather than cloying."Ripe, juicy and well-cut, offering creamed Jonagold apple, dried pineapple and Cavaillon melon notes lined with warm phyllo dough and toasted hazelnut accents. Juicy finish. Drink now."Wine Spectator 90 points

An extraordinary wine from a 400 year-old South African estate that pipes baroque music through the vineyards all day to keep the grapes happy! Rare to find barrel fermented Chardonnay with such class and grace at this price point. The Wine Spectator 89 point review for the 2011 remains spot on for the just released 2012! "A very fresh, juicy style, with tasty pear and yellow apple fruit enlivened with a honeysuckle streak on the finish. Deliciously uncomplicated."
