El Cortijillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2014 Product #29946 (In Stock)
El Cortijillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2014 El Cortijillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2014

The past three vintages of this 100% Tempranillo from the land of Don Quixote and windmills pulled down 88 point ratings from Steve Tanzer’s IWC (now Vinous).  This edition is clearly better even as the price stays crazy, wonderfully, low.

It’s all Tempranillo from 30+ year-old vines grown on the dry, dusty, plains of La Manacha and made all in stainless steel tank (no oak at all).  And, pure Tempranillo joy and fun is what you’ll find here in spades.  The generous aromas feature crushed black cherry, plum, and blackberry fruit with a subtle accent of exotic sandalwood or Indian spice - a Tempranillo signature. On the palate, it's medium bodied and very juicy with tangy ripe blackberry and sour cherry flavors at the fore and notions of crushed tobacco, fresh herb, white pepper and bitter chocolate adding interest.  Vigerous, extroverted, and fresh, the sweet fruit flavors pump on deep into the juicy cherry/plum/berry finish where fine tannins give support and mouthwatering acids a happy lift.  Refreshingly fun with a chill and ready to delight with a wide range of foods.

Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009 Product #29108 (In Stock)
Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009 Alvarez De Toledo Mencia Roble (Bierzo) 2009

Mencia and Bierzo – the region of Spain on the border of verdant Galicia and harsh, dry, Castilla Y Leon – seem made for each other.  In fact, the Mencia grape probably originated here as a mutation of much older, now lost, vines.  And, the Alvarez de Toledo family has about 300 years experience with growing and making wine in Bierzo, so it’s not entirely surprising they got this one right.  This is the kind of nicely fruity, medium-bodied, red that’s fun to drink all by itself and easy to pair with pretty  much anything you put on your weeknight table.  It’s a fine quaffer, but there’s more than enough complexity here if you feel like paying attention.

"Balsamic, leather, and black fruits are the principal notes struck by this suave effort that over-delivers in a big way. Like its older sibling, it can be enjoyed now but will have more to say in 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29496 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

The 2011 edition was one of our best-selling red value favorites of both 2013 and 2014, and the new vintage cranks up the intensity and depth even more.  The aromas are robust and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry fruit, hints of dark chocolate and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.  Supple enough for a party, structured enough for most anything you’ll pull off the grill, and a steal of a deal, too!

"A very honest, fresh and fruit-driven red with aromas of cherries, garrigue and thyme with a medium-bodied palate, some weight and tannins that would do better with food. This is a red that sells for a song."Wine Advocate 88 points

Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012 Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012

Here's the kind of value that made Spain famous in the international wine world, but that seems to have vanished in recent years. It's 100% Tempranillo done in tank that, as a Robert Parker said of the 2011, is "a delicious, quasi-fruit bomb offering loads of berry fruit, roasted herb, lavender and earthy, peppery notes."  A fine party or backyard cookout red at a very compelling price.

Castillo Ducay Rosado 2014 Product #29511 (In Stock)
Castillo Ducay Rosado 2014 Castillo Ducay Rosado 2014

Spain’s Cariñena region is scorching hot during the day, shockingly cool at night, and covered in layers and layers of fractured rock and pebbles – in other words, a great place to make great rosé!  The label here honors the local name for Cariñena wines - “el vino de las piedras” or  “wine of the rocks”  - while the wine in the bottle is a testament to how dedicated local growers are bringing this historically important wine region back to prominence.

It’s a blend of mostly Garnacha with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon for complexity and color.  And there’s plenty of color – the wine almost fluoresces in the glass with the brilliant pink taking on almost lavender highlights. The aromas are just as exuberant as the color – big scents of watermelon granite, ripe strawberry, blood orange, and even a little white pepper.  The wine dances across your palate with juicy lemon acidity carrying flavors of candied watermelon, red berries, and plenty of sweet/sour citrus.  It finishes dry and crisp, with a Jolly Rancher-like tang to the lingering watermelon, tangerine, and orange zest flavors.  There’s a lot of complexity – and even more fun! – here, especially at this very attractive price.

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013

Stunning blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, and long one of our – and Robert Parker’s – “go to” wineries for great value reds, this Campo de Borgia Garnacha specialist has outdone itself with a brilliant 2012.  A perfect bottle to serve to a crowd or sip on its own after a hard day, this will also sing with anything from salmon to burgers or roast pork.

"Deep ruby. Cherry, dark berries, vanilla and peppery spices on the fragrant nose. Smooth, pliant and juicy, showing a subtle spiciness to its open-knit blackberry and cherry flavors. Finishes smoky, broad and persistent, leaving dark berry and black pepper notes behind. Lots of wine for the money here, as is normal for this bottling."International Wine Cellar 89 points

"Another steal in terms of wine value is the 2013 Garnacha, which is a 15,000-case blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo that is fermented and aged in stainless steel. This special cuvée has been a huge success commercially for many years. Lots of strawberry, black cherry and fruitcake aromas intermixed with hints of earthy, sandy notes jump from the glass of this 2013. It reveals vivid, exuberant fruit, medium body, super purity and a wonderful, fresh, lively, boisterous, satisfying style. Cava is always good value, but you'll look long and hard to find any sub-$10 sparkling wine that's this good. It's a blend of traditional Cava varietals - Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada - with 30% Chardonnay and fermented in bottle, just like Champagne.  It's rich, yeasty, showing off caramalized apricot flavors, fine bubbles, and finishing zesty and dry.  ** from the Washington Post, too!

"The 2010 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza feels quite classical in its style, lightly-colored, with clean red spicy fruit, a touch of leather and a polished, soft palate that makes it very pleasant and easy to drink. At this price level this wine is a steal! Drink 2014-2018."Wine Advocate 91 points

The review pretty mush says it all

"Deep ruby. Spicy cherry and red berries on the perfumed nose, with a floral note adding complexity. Youthfully taut and nicely delineated, offering fresh red and dark fruit flavors and a touch of candied violet. Finishes with brisk cherry and anise qualities, dusty tannins and a touch of refreshing bitterness. Outstanding bang for the buck here."International Wine Cellar 89 points

Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012 Product #27782 (In Stock)

A straight-ahead, lightly oaked, Tempranillo with good richness, plenty of fruit and spice, and enough acidity to stay fresh.

"Aged for six months in two- and three-year-old French oak. Bright purple. Smoky cherry and dark berries on the fragrant nose. Lush and open-knit, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and boysenberry flavors accented by a hint of cracked pepper. Finishes smooth and spicy, with a hint of tannins and good persistence."International Wine Cellar 89 points

“The 2012 Paso a Paso Tempranillo is even better. Aged six months in neutral French oak, it displays a savory, slightly fleshier style than its organic cousin. A sleeper of the vintage, it reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of black currants and jammy black cherries, excellent purity and texture, and a medium-bodied finish. This delicious red is an outrageous value. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Product #28881 (In Stock)
Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011

A fine value in rich, earthy, but nicely focused Monastrell.

"Dark ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, cherry, star anise and candied rose, with a touch of orange zest. Smells like a ripe pinot noir. Fleshy and seamless, offering sappy red fruit flavors and a bitter note of rhubarb. Subtle vanilla and licorice notes linger on the smooth, gently tannic finish. Lots of wine for the money."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"Made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre), Casa Castillo’s 2011 Monastrell comes from incredibly low yields (16 hectoliters per hectare). Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2005 Product #28490 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2005 Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2005

Huge savings on delicious, highly-rated, fully mature, Rioja Reserva – not much more that needs to be said!  The style here is what I might call “restrained modern.”  Great care has been taken to preserve ripe fruit flavors (and, for a 9 year-old wine, there’s a LOT of fruit here) and a deft use of French and American oak imparts classic Rioja earth, smoke and spice notes without overwhelming the wine.  The combination of oodles of dark fruit and traditional Rioja funk reminds us of long-time favorite Muga.  Drink it now for the fruit or cellar it for years if you enjoy the lighter, tea and chamomile tang of more traditional Rioja.

“These are excellent wines brimming with personality and well-judged, prudent winemaking. The 2005 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Garnacha aged for 20 months in French and American oak. It has a beautiful, rounded, sensual bouquet with hints of over-ripe Satsuma and gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of piquancy on the entry. It has crisp acidity and taut tannins on the dry, dusky finish but it remains extremely well-focused. Drink now-2025.”Wine Advocate 92 points

Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011 Product #29191 (In Stock)
Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011 Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011

This has been a Spanish value staple for years now, and the 2011 is yet another fine Toro Tempranillo.  The wine is 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo), hand harvested from vines 30+ years-old. There’s plenty of ripe Temparnillo fruit here – cherry, blackberry and plum – and very nice doses of wood spice and the grape’s exotic sandalwood fragrance.  But cool nights on the vine and careful treatment in the winery leave a bright, refreshing, acidity in place as well and the smooth, refined, tannins don’t get in the way of solo sipping pleasure.  A lot of wine for a very  modest price.

"Deep ruby. Smoky cherry and roasted coffee on the nose, with attractive floral and spicecake notes. Lush and expansive in the mouth, offering broad cherry and cassis flavors and a hint of licorice. A suave, gently sweet and open-knit wine, with a spicy element emerging on the long, gently tannic finish."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Bodegas Filon Real Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29816 (In Stock)
Bodegas Filon Real Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Bodegas Filon Real Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Another in a long line of stunning Spanish values from remote Calatayud, south of Rioja and east of Ribera del Duero.  At 2,500 feet altitude, these 50 year-old Garnacha vines grow slowly and give small crops of ripe, concentrated fruit.  Old-school, natural, farming gets a touch of modern magic in the winery as the powerful young wine ages 6 months in French oak for polish and an extra dose of spice.  It’s big, rich, and pumps out loads of dark, spicy, raspberry fruit from front to back before a juicy finish provides lift and refreshment.  As Josh Reynolds says, this “delivers incredible value.”

"All garnacha, from vines that were reportedly planted over 50 years ago. Aged in French oak for six months.  Saturated ruby. Fresh red berries, allspice and rose on the nose, with a lively mineral nuance adding vibrancy and lift. Offers intense fresh raspberry and spicecake flavors, along with notes of white pepper, candied flowers and smoky minerals. Supple and seamless and but nicely focused too, finishing with strong thrust and silky tannins that add gentle grip. Delivers incredible value, with the sort of finesse that I seldom find in any wine priced under $30, much less $20."  Vinous (Reynolds) 91 points

Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28440 (In Stock)
Billo Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Priorat Negre 2010

Priorat tends to be a massive, intense, and cellar-worthy wine that needs time in cellar or big food to shine.  So, the 2010 Billo Negre is a very special treat – a supple, open, blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and a little Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers plenty of classic Priorat character in a “drink me now” style.  Generous aromas of black plums, blackberry, warm stones and a touch of savory herb waft from the glass.  In the mouth the fruit turns more Grenache-like with raspberry and red plum joining the cassis and blue/black fruits and a touch of luscious milk chocolate coming up on the end.  It’s full of flavor and nicely concentrated, but stays wonderfully fresh and pure on the dark berry, chocolate, and warm stone finish. The soft, fine-grained, tannins give this more than enough heft to pair with pork tenderloin or lamb loin chops, but it’s pretty darn tasty all by itself, too.  A stellar value from rocky, dry, remote, Priorat.
