Poppy Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2014 Product #30882 (In Stock)
Poppy Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2014 Poppy Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2014

A young winery - founded in 2003 - with a pretty simple mission:  Make wine folks will enjoy!  And that's what this fun, fruit-filled, and lightly oaked Chardonnay does very well.  It's all from Poppy's vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, first planted in 1972.  Warm sunshine got the grapes fully ripe and bursting with flavor.  Cool nights kept the acids fresh and held the alcohol down to a nicely balanced 13.5%.  About 30% of the wine was done in stainless steel - for fresh, bright fruit - and the rest with oak for creamy richness and complexity.

The 2014 is even better than the 90 point 2013.  You'll find plenty of richness here, with good dollops of grilled pineapple, ripe pear, golden apple, buttery oak and a round, creamy, texture. Turns more crisp in the mouth with apple and bright pear fruit and notes of green apple and butter lingering nicely.  A great party Chard for casual sipping and pretty darn versatile at table, too!

Bishops Peak Chardonnay Central Coast 2014 Product #29881 (In Stock)
Bishops Peak Chardonnay Central Coast 2014 Bishops Peak Chardonnay Central Coast 2014

As always, the folks at Talley do a fine job with their "no oak" Bishop's Peak program. More aromatic than many inexpensive Chardonnays, this features aromas of ripe golden apples and pears.  On the palate, no oak and no malolactic fermentation keep it fresh and crisp, with flavors of more tart green apples and a little citrus zest.  A great everyday Chardonnay for light poultry dishes or sipping before a meal.

"Fresh pear and tangerine scents are complemented by ginger and honey. Smooth and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering sappy orchard and citrus fruit flavors and a hint of melon. Emphatically fruity Chardonnay with very good closing breadth and cling."  Vinous (Reynolds) 90 points

Leese-fitch Merlot 2014 Leese-fitch Merlot 2014

Dark ruby in color, this Merlot showcases aromas of muddled blackberry with thyme, vanilla, plum preserves, and savory notes of toasted rye bread. The flavors start with jammy blackberry, caramelized vanilla, molasses, and black cherry notes with hints of Herbs du Provence. As the flavors start to evolve and linger on the finish, bright pomegranate, tart plum, American Oak vanilla nuances, and black currants come forth on the palate. Winery Notes

Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Product #31113 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Chapoutier Bila-Haut wines have been favorites for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  And, in California's great 2013 vintage, this is the best release ever here and tastes far more expensive than it is.

It's full of lush raspberry, cassis, and black plum fruit with just the right accent of Bordeaux-like fresh herb.  Full-bodied and nicely ripe, the touches of oak spice and bitter chocolate add more complexity.  The chunky texture and soft "chew" on the finish mean this will handle a steak easily - but there's no reason not to drink this all by itself. Hands down, the best value we've seen in California over the past few years.

Block Nine Caiden's Vyd Pinot Noir 2015 Block Nine Caiden's Vyd Pinot Noir 2015

This has been one of Robert Parker's favorite "value" Pinot Noirs over the past few years; as he said of the 2013, "An authentic tasting Pinot Noir that sells for a song...Aromas of sweet red and black cherry fruit intermixed with clove and baking spices are offered in a medium-bodied, earthy, soft, silky style." Another solid release in the fine 2015 vintage and still a great deal. Fun stuff.

Peirano Estate The Other Red Lodi 2013 Peirano Estate The Other Red Lodi 2013

Not quite sure about the label, but there's definitely some sex-appeal to this big, rich, red.  A blend of Cabernet  Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah from California's Lodi region, this pumps out big aromas and flavors of black cherry, red plum, blackcurrant and more with subtle accents of herb and oak spice.  Creamy and mouthfilling for sure, but not heavy (just 13.7% abv) and finishing juicy and fresh with a notes of pomegranate, cherry, vanilla and spice lingering.  Fun stuff!

R8 Wine Co Cabernet Sauvignon California 2013 Product #31293 (In Stock)
R8 Wine Co Cabernet Sauvignon California 2013 R8 Wine Co Cabernet Sauvignon California 2013

R8 stands for Runway 8 at the Sonoma County airport, where this fine value winery is located (all the founders like to fly, too).  The 2013 R8 Cabernet is sourced from vineyards up and down California's North Coast and reflects the best of the great 2013 harvest:  plenty of ripe fruit but no excess alcohol (just 13.5%).  It serves up great aromas of black currant, black cherry, milk chocolate and spice.  It's fleshy and rich on the palate with more classic Cab currant fruit, a nice dose of chocolate and spice, and fine, food friendly, tannins.  A great party or casual dinner Cabernet that delivers a touch of extra class on the sneaky long finish.  Highly recommended!

Marietta Old Vine Red Lot 64 Product #31398 (In Stock)
Marietta Old Vine Red Lot 64 Marietta Old Vine Red Lot 64

For 20+ years, Marietta has made this wine a bit differently.  It's a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and other assorted "Italian Blacks" with 10% done in new oak, 30% in neutral barrel and the rest in tank.  The grapes are harvested ripe, but not over-ripe or jammy (13.5% abv) and the Zin fermented cool and slow for maximum freshness.  And, when it's time to finish the wine, they blend lots from 3, 4 or 5 different vintages to make the best, juiciest, freshest value they can.

As Robert Parker says, these wines are "somewhat contrarian styles of wines, non-vintage, but loaded with flavor and personality."  The just-released Lot 64 is a classic, loaded with fresh cherry/berry fruit and accents of licorice, plum, spice and dried flowers. More "delicious" than "impressive," treat it like a New World Beaujolais or Cotes du Rhone to enjoy at a party, with pizza, or juicy burgers hot off the grill.

Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013 Product #31052 (In Stock)
Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013 Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013

Lodi is known for its plush, jammy style of Zinfandel, and Victor Vineyards’ version manages to stay much more balanced than most examples while still retaining a sense of place. At 14.8% alcohol, it’s not a light wine by any means, but it carries its weight well, and the alcohol comes across as pleasant warmth rather than booziness. Aromas of raspberry, strawberry, baking spices and pepper round out the appealing nose. Take a sip and you’ll be rewarded with brighter fruit flavors than you might expect - a hint of cranberry keeps things fresh, and the mouthfeel is definitely full bodied and satisfyingly plush, but not overwhelming. Ideal with an all-American meal of grilled New York strip or burgers!

"Zinfandel has become so risky in recent years that I often shy away from it: Too many examples are hot with excessive alcohol and ripeness, with sheer power masquerading as quality. This fine example reminds me why I love zin: raspberry and cranberry flavors, with hints of smoke and earth. It carries its high alcohol well (and 14.8 percent is moderate compared to some zins that crack 15.5 percent or higher). Best of all, if you don’t finish the bottle, you might be rewarded the next night with even more-vibrant fruit flavors.” ***/Exceptional, Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post

Butter Chardonnay California 2015 Product #30783 (In Stock)
Butter Chardonnay California 2015 Butter Chardonnay California 2015

Yes, Butter is back – and it’s just as fine as ever!  Former Rombauer winemaker Rob Lloyd and his partners a JaM wines have turned out another full-throttle, frankly oaked, and richly butter Chardonnay in the fine (if small) 2015 vintage.  As always, you’ll find big aromas of ripe pear, golden apple, spicy oak, vanilla and creamy butter.  And, the big flavors of super-ripe tropical and orchard fruits, smoke, spice, vanilla bean and still more fresh butter coat your palate with a richly textured, smooth, opulent texture.  What’s new is a touch more vibrant acidity from front to back and a newfound sense of delineation and clarity to the flavors.  More of a “baby Rombauer” than ever!

It’s a fun, butterball, of a sipper and party wine, and will be a happy partner with everything from fish to poultry and salads at table.  But, this has sold our early in each of the past 5 vintages, so now’s the time to grab a full year’s supply!

Macrostie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2014 Macrostie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2014

Steve MacRostie creates this classy Chardonnay from grapes grown in some of the most exciting regions of California's Sonoma Coast.  Sangiacomo and Hi Vista vineyards in Carneros give richness and texture.  Several Russian River Valley sites - including sites owned by the Dutton and Martinelli familes - give lift, purity and vibrancy.  And MacRostie's own Wildcat Mountain Vyd just west of Carneros adds fantastic complexity and length.

All of the fruit is pressed whole cluster (without destemming) to maintain clarity and freshness.  About 90% ferments and ages in (20% new) French oak for more richness and body while 20% stays in stainless steel to retain crispness and cut.

"Features a delicious core of vibrant grapefruit and lemon-laced tangerine and white peach notes, with zesty acidity that keeps the flavors fresh and jumping."Wine Spectator 90 points

Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014 Product #31346 (In Stock)
Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014 Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014

The Seghesio name has been synonymous with Zinfandel ever since Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vines in Sonoma's Alexander Valley in 1895.  Edoardo's great-great-great (?) grandson, Ted Seghesio, still makes the wines here, maintaining the family's 120-year tradition of care and quality – and value.

And, the 2014 keeps the streak alive!  It’s 95%+ Zinfandel with just a touch of Petit Sirah for color and mid-palate fruit.  You’ll find all of Zinfandel’s briary berry fruit on display here from the big aromas of cherry and raspberry to the red/black fruit mélange on the palate and long finish.  The dash of herb, sweet spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander), and dusting of black pepper make this a sweet-and-savory party in your mouth.

"Plump and luscious, this is jam-packed with fruit. Lively blackberry, pepper and other spice box aromas lead to ripe and rich flavors of black raspberry, caramel and licorice. There are more complex Zinfandels, but few that are more enjoyable to drink. Drink now through 2022."Wine Spectator 93 points

Marietta Christo Lot 3 Product #30367 (In Stock)
Marietta Christo Lot 3 Marietta Christo Lot 3

One of America's great value wineries specializes in creating multi-vintage blends that, as Parker says, "Sell for a song." This one's a winner!

"There are approximately 12,000 cases of the NV Christo Lot 3, which is a hedonistic blend of Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah and a touch of Viognier to uplift the aromatics. This is, again, aged in neutral oak for two years and a blend of three vintages: 2011, 2012 and 2013. This is my favorite of all of these wines – a wine of exceptional purity and intensity and plenty of character, as this one is 70% Syrah and the rest the other three grapes. It tips the scales at a lofty 15.3% alcohol, but it’s well hidden behind a cascade of blackberry and cassis fruit, roasted meats, steak tartare, licorice and Provençal herbs. It’s a big boy, and that’s exactly the way they want it. This wine should drink well for 7-8 years, but it’s meant to be consumed in its exuberant youthfulness."Wine Advocate 91 points

Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014 Product #30943 (In Stock)
Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014 Fossil Point Pinot Noir Edna Valley 2014

Fossil Point is named for the rugged headland in San Luis Obispo County which features sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Central Coast. These cool coastal vineyards are perfect for Pinot Noir, allowing plenty of ripeness while retaining freshness and fine acidity.

The 2014 edition is simply superb, about as fine a California Pinot Noir value as we've seen in years.  Loads of sweet, ripe, red and black fruit on the nose and palate with a kick of smoke and sweet spice from 14 months in French oak.  A blood orange note comes out with air, lending freshness to match the classic California richness before the sweet spice and dark fruit come up on the long, pure, finish.  Really, really, good stuff.
