Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29496 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

The 2011 edition was one of our best-selling red value favorites of both 2013 and 2014, and the new vintage cranks up the intensity and depth even more.  The aromas are robust and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry fruit, hints of dark chocolate and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.  Supple enough for a party, structured enough for most anything you’ll pull off the grill, and a steal of a deal, too!

"A very honest, fresh and fruit-driven red with aromas of cherries, garrigue and thyme with a medium-bodied palate, some weight and tannins that would do better with food. This is a red that sells for a song."Wine Advocate 88 points

La Bastarda Bianco Toscana 2015 Product #31041 (In Stock)

As the whimsical label suggests, there's no reason to take this fresh and fruit-filled Trebbiano (70%) and Chardonnay blend too seriously.  Big, juicy, white peach, apricot, and lemon fruit sings out here with more zesty peach fruit and a touch of bitter almond on the finish.  A fine sipper and even better companion for trout, scampi or white fish. Very hard to beat at this price!

Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Product #29373 (In Stock)
Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011

Number 8 on Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buys of 2014!   The grape blend here is a good example of why folks find Portuguese wine intimidating:  Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelão, Pinot Noir, and Touriga Nacional are in there somewhere!  The winemaking is pretty straight ahead, with fermentation in tank and just a little time in barrel and bottle before release.  But there’s a nice touch of complexity to the plump, juicy, aromas and flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and tangy plum fruit and accents of crushed violets and lavender.  At just 12.5% abv, you can enjoy this solo with a chill or pair it everything from fried chicken to grilled tuna or burgers.

"A dark colored, dense wine that is rich and firmly structured. Aged in wood, it holds flavors of plum and berry fruits balanced with a fresh acidity. This is a wine for aging, its structure a powerful statement. Drink from 2014.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014 Product #29849 (In Stock)
Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014 Les Vigneaux Chardonnay Pays D' Oc 2014

This ripe and fresh no-oak Chardonnay comes from stony vineyards deep within the heart of France's Languedoc region, not far from the famed Mas de Daumass Gassac.  The vineyards lie in a valley northwest of Montpellier where warm sunshine promotes ripening and cool nighttime breezes from the Mediterranean help retain freshness and fruit flavors.

Fresh aromas of juicy pear, golden apple and a hints of peach and honeysuckle lead to a nice, generous, mouthful of fresh fruit, toasted nut, and honeysuckle.  The crisp, fruity, acids build from the middle to the back to give this a lip-smacking, mouthwatering, finish as pear, apple and floral notes linger nicely.  A fine all-around Chardonnay for fish, chicken, or simply sipping.

Les Vigneaux Merlot Pays D' Oc 2014 Product #29850 (In Stock)
Les Vigneaux Merlot Pays D' Oc 2014 Les Vigneaux Merlot Pays D' Oc 2014

Merlot isn't the first grape you think of when looking at a bottle of wine from Languedoc, but the famed Mas de Daumas Gassac proved years ago that Merlot can do very well in the stony, sunny, vineyards around the town of Gignac.  Here, the local co-op, Les Vignerons de la Vicomté, has turned out an easy-drinking Merlot treat!

It's a clean, fresh, fruity Merlot with pretty red currant and berry fruit and accents of chocolate and spice.  Smooth and easy on the palate and supple and clean on the fruit and chocolate finish where just a touch of fresh herb adds interest.  Fun stuff!

Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013 Product #30784 (In Stock)
Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013 Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013

The 2013 Figaro is a great introduction to the old vines of Spain's Calatayud and just an all-around great “House Red” to enjoy this year.  The low-yielding old Garnacha vines give this wonderful ripeness and concentration, with big aromas and flavors of baked strawberry, dark black cherry, dried flowers, and cracked pepper.  The cool nights and fermentation in steel tank lock in the fruit and keep it fresh and vibrant, while a short stay in oak barrels rounds off the edges and adds a lovely burst of sweet spice on the juicy, lightly chewy, finish.

Drink it cool and you’ll love the almost sangria-like fruitiness.  Let it come up to room temperatures, and watch this fill your mouth with generous fruit and spice and pair perfectly with most any meat, fish, or vegetable coming off the grill.  A great all-purpose red to enjoy anytime!

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2014 Product #29984 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2014 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2014

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2014 edition harkens back to the extra layer of richness, ripeness and power that elevated the ’11 to 90 point status (vs. the “regular” 89 points Parker gives it).  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

In 2014, the fruit returns to the darker shades found in the 2011, with loads of juicy black raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors with accents of crushed violets, white pepper, and sweet spice. It's smooth and supple on the palate with mouthfilling heft and juicy, mouthwatering, freshness.  It finishes smooth and with light, ripe, tannins, leaving notes of blackberry, pepper, and spice lingering behind. A whole lot of wine - and fun - for the money!

Pinot Blanc/Bianco is having a bit of a moment in our store, and this racy, mineral version from Cantine Nalles in Italy’s Alto Adige region is especially beguiling.  It’s lemony fresh, with aromas of citrus peel, fresh almonds and a little bit of peach.  On the palate, it’s a bit more delicate than Pinot Grigio but still has satisfying weight, and has a nice mineral streak that would make it fantastic with seafood or as a warm-weather aperitif.

Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2010 Product #29747 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2010 Lopez De Haro Rioja Crianza 2010

There's no one named "Lopez" involved with this project and the winery isn't located in the town of Haro.  But the quality from this relatively new project has bee nothing short of astounding through its first set of releases.  The 2008 Rioja Crianza (all Tempranillo) was very nice, but this 2010 takes a clear step up in complexity and satisfaction.

"The 2010 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza feels quite classical in its style, lightly-colored, with clean red spicy fruit, a touch of leather and a polished, soft palate that makes it very pleasant and easy to drink. At this price level this wine is a steal! Drink 2014-2018."Wine Advocate 91 points

Vinicola Corellana Camara Alta Navarra Garnacha 2014 Product #30198 (In Stock)
Vinicola Corellana Camara Alta Navarra Garnacha 2014 Vinicola Corellana Camara Alta Navarra Garnacha 2014

As more than one expert has said, seeing the Thomas Calder Selection note on a wine's back label is a close to a guarantee of quality as you're going to get.  Here, Tom heads south from his normal French turf to uncover a gem of a winery from Spain's Navarra region.  North of Rioja and note far from the French border, Navarra was Spain's most important wine region in the 1700-1800s, so much so that the King had to ban new vineyard plantings for fear not enough food would be grown to feed the local population!

The sandy soils of Ribera Baja, in Navarra's south, are perfect for getting traditional grapes like Garnacha fully ripe without going over the top, and that's what we have here.  Done all in tank, Garnacha grapes from 50+ year-old vines delivers direct strawberry and cherry fruit with dashes of herb and spice for extra interest.  Easy drinking, fresh, and fun, this over-delivers for the price and will be a great everyday red for casual food and entertaining.

Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2012 Product #30389 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2012 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2012

If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.

As Wine Enthusiast notes, this has the balance and structure to improve steadily over the next 5-8 years, so don’t hesitate to load up and hold some – if you can!  Because right now you’ll find it hard to resist on cold night by itself or paired with robust winter foods like stews, burgers, sausages, or – if you’re in the mood for the full Portuguse experience – grilled octopus!

“Structured, this oozes blackberry fruitiness as well as a balanced layer of dry tannins. The wine is fruity and rich while keeping its elegance. A core of tannins and fresh acidity in the fruit promise that this wine will age.” Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rouge 2014 Product #30529 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rouge 2014 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rouge 2014

While Mas de Daumas Gassac is most famous for its benchmark Languedoc estate-grown Bordeaux blends, we’ve always had a special fondness for their great value Guilhem wines. The family launched the Moulin de Gassac line-up, including Guilhem, to help preserve old-vine vineyards owned by neighbors who increasingly struggled to find buyers for their grapes and wines.  The Rouge is a blend of 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and 30% Carignan, all from 25-30 year-old dry-farmed vines the ripen beautifully in Languedoc’s warm, sunny, climate.

The 2014 does a wonderful job of marrying the rich, warm, ripeness and stony minerality you expect from Languedoc with remarkable freshness of fruit and fragrant berry blossom accents.  A mélange of blackberry, raspberry, cherry and strawberry fruit makes up the wine’s core, with surprisingly complex grace notes of fresh flowers, warm stones, and exotic sandalwood adding interest.  A burst of raspberry puree pushes through on the finish with crushed rock minerality, mouthwatering acids, and fine tannins giving support.  You’ll be happy enjoying this on its own at a party or while dinner cooks and love how it pairs with everything from lamb burgers to pizza.

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2015 Product #30530 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2015 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2015

Our first 2015 rosé is a winner!  It’s equal parts Syrah and Carignan, grown and harvested fresh just for rosé.  After a few hours of fermentation, the juice is pressed off the black grape skins, giving it a just-right amount of color and structure while allowing the juice to retain all of its natural freshness and vibrancy.

As soon as you see this in your glass, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, showcasing 2015’s extra dose of body and richness but still light and fresh.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!
