Villa Jolanda Prosecco 187ml Individual Bottle Product #23927 (In Stock)
Villa Jolanda Prosecco 187ml Individual Bottle Villa Jolanda Prosecco 187ml Individual Bottle

Villa Jolanda Prosecco is made from 100% Prosecco grapes grown in the hills north of Treviso.  Grapes are hand-harvested, chilled in the vineyard, and given a low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruit.  The wine features lovely aromas of white flowers, orchard fruits, and a touch of mineral.  Lightly sparkling with very pretty, small, bubbles, the wine is full of flavor - peach, ripe apple, lemon zest, and a nice mineral streak.  Fruity and crisp, the wine finishes with a touch of mineral and yellow apple.  A fantastic wine to keep on hand for everyday celebrations or to stock up on for Holiday parties.  Delicious!

Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011 Product #27038 (In Stock)
Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011 Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011

We have no idea how such a delicious wine made from 30 year-old, dry farmed, Tempranillo vines in La Manacha could be quite this inexpensive…but we’re glad it is! This is real, honest, “vinous” wine, packed with cranberry and black cherry fruit, accents of licorice root and cracked pepper, and long, smooth and refreshing on the finish.  A perfect wine for big celebratory parties, weddings, back yard cookouts, or just sipping all on its own.

“Bright ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by black pepper and candied rose. Tightly focused red berry flavors are underscored by smoky mineral and floral qualities. Emphatically fruity and silky in texture, with a smooth, gently sweet finish.”International Wine Cellar 88 points

Arnaud De Villeneuve Muscat Sec 2011 Product #26153 (In Stock)
Arnaud De Villeneuve Muscat Sec 2011 Arnaud De Villeneuve Muscat Sec 2011

If you think Muscat is just a grapey, often sweet, wine suitable for making into Moscato, well, think again!  The 2011 Arnaud de Villeneuve Muscat Sec is a bone dry but wildly flamboyant wine from France’s Languedoc Roussillon region.  Extravagant aromas of white grape, tropical flowers, ginger and spice burst out of the glass.  In the mouth there’s an explosion of spiced citrus, apricot, ginger, and asian five spice flavors with a lovely honeysuckle note emerging in the mid-palate.  The wine finishes dry and refreshing with chalky mineral and gingery lime lingering nicely.  Yes, this will be fantastic with Asian dishes but it’s so much fun that you’ll need to keep plenty on hand to drink on its own as well.  And, a great value to boot!

Riebeek Cellars Chardonnay 2013 Product #28488 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Chardonnay 2013 Riebeek Cellars Chardonnay 2013

Here’s a fantastic Chardonnay for summer sipping.  It’s a mouthful of pure Chardonnay fruit – apple, pineapple, lime, lemon, and peach – unmarred by excessive alcohol (under 13.5%) or excessive oak (none at all!).  Brisk and bright on entry, creamy and nicely round in the middle, and then wonderfully fresh and clean on the zesty, mouthwatering, finish.  A fine fun bottle of Chard for poolside and back deck enjoyment (or even a big party in the Fall!).

“Riebeek Cellars, located on the western coast of the Cape Province of South Africa, was established over 70 years ago. These wines are meant to be consumed early in life, and therefore the focus is on unmanipulated, unadulterated, straightforward, abundant fruit. The 2013 Chardonnay is more reminiscent of a New Zealand Chardonnay than most from South Africa. Its offers a combination of lemon/lime notes intermixed with hints of honey and white peaches, medium body and an unoaked style. Enjoy it over the next year.”Wine Advocate 86 points

Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012 Product #28489 (In Stock)
Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012 Riebeek Cellars Pinotage 2012

You might want to see if pigs are starting to fly – because Doug is actually recommending a wine made from Pinotage!  This cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir created in 1941 and grown pretty much exclusively in South Africa is usually too earthy, vegetal, chemical….whatever; it usually doesn’t taste very good.  But here the combination of 80% Pinotage and 20% of a very obscure blending grape called Mocha ends up tasting like really ripe Gamay.  Not sure how they did that, but I am sure that you’ll love the big, plump, raspberry, fruit cake, dark chocolate, and subtle leather aromas and flavors and the juicy, mouthwatering, bite of cranberry at the very end.  A great wine to chill down and enjoy from the time you light the grill right on through washing up after your guests have left.  Really fun stuff.

“Light-bodied and direct, with bitter cherry, blood orange and singed cedar notes, delivering a racy, taut feel through the finish.”Wine Spectator 86 points

Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Product #27960 (In Stock)
Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013 Los Ailos Syrah-Malbec 2013

As much as we love Argentina's straight Malbec wines, they can get even better with the help of a blending partner.  In the Los Ailos, Syrah plays that role, taking what would have been a pleasant, juicy, red to a whole new level of richness and flavor.

The 2013 Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry and black plum.  Then, in the mouth, it's ripe and juicy with plenty of fresh black fruit, a little leather, and a nice touch of minerality.  It's balanced and fresh with a fine spread of ripe tannin on the back promising good things at table.  Very nice value.

Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2012 Product #28090 (In Stock)
Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2012 Bricco Dei Tati Cortese Piemonte 2012

Cortese is best known as the grape of Gavi, but it's grown seldom as interesting as this! This wine is surprisingly complex on the nose, although we struggled to put it to words. Think of smelling an herbal infusion with lemon, honey, and lavender on a sunny day. (Fanciful, but it's the best I could do!) In the mouth the wine is clean and crisp with notes of lemon, bees wax, and fresh herbs complicated by something hard to describe but vaguely grapefruity. finishes clean and fresh with just a hint of green apple. this is going to be our "go to" for picnics, cold seafood salads, and simple chicken dishes. A whole lotta wine for the money.

De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012 Product #27161 (In Stock)
De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012 De Angelis Falerio Doc Bianco 2012

The Falerio DOC sits at the southern end of Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast just East of Umbria.  The relatively new DOC was created in 1975 to promote the region's two best white wine grapes-Passerina and Pecorino-while continuing to allow use of the ubiquitous Trebbiano.

This 2012 Falerio is a fresh, young, wine with all of the refreshing, spritzy qualities of the 2011, but with an extra notch of richness.  The aromas are like sniffing limes and peaches at the beach-plenty of green and orchard fruit aromas with a saline note of the sea in the background.  On the palate, there's loads of ripe, creamy peach and nectarine fruit with a spritz of key lime juice and seltzer followed by a chalky, salty, mineral-driven, finish.  There's a lot of creamy richness here that will please fans of unoaked Chardonnays, but the zesty acidity and mineral element make this super fresh and mouthwatering.  Brilliant with a garlicky scampi and seafood but pretty darn fun to just drink at a party or with friends over antipasti.  Staggering value.

Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2010 Product #27542 (In Stock)
Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2010 Montebuena Rioja Cuvee KPF 2010

A brilliant value in sophisticated, 100% Tempranillo Rioja, hand harvested and aged in traditional American Oak.  A bit shockingly for a wine at this price point, this is built to age 5-8 years but is delicious now with 30 minutes or so in decanter.

"Vivid ruby. Ripe cherry and blackcurrant on the nose and in the mouth. Pliant and seamless in texture, with good heft and back-end energy. Finishes smooth and sweet, with fine-grained tannins providing shape and grip. Still on the young side but this wine drinks very well with an hour or so of decanting; it's an excellent value for Rioja."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"Displays oodles of white chocolate, spicy oak, black cherry jam and strawberries in a fruit-forward, medium-bodied but luscious and authoritative style. This is a silky-textured, full-flavored wine to drink over the next several years." Wine Advocate 89 points

MAN Family Wines Warrelwind Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Product #27578 (In Stock)
MAN Family Wines Warrelwind Sauvignon Blanc 2013 MAN Family Wines Warrelwind Sauvignon Blanc 2013

The brothers-in-law who make MAN wines grow most of the Sauvignon Blanc for this wine in high-altitude vineyards of the Agter-Paarl sub-region of South Africa’s Stellenbosch.  Strong winds blow through the vineyards most every day, leading to the name “Warrelwind” (or Whirlwind in English).  And there’s certainly a Warrelwind of aroma and flavor in this delicious South African Sauvignon Blanc!

Big, fruity, aromas of red grapefruit, berry, and green apple jump from the glass with just the right touch of Sauvignon’s signature fresh cut grass for complexity.  The flavors are wildly complex – Ruby Red grapefruit, green apple, honeydew melon, and a touch of something tropical take center stage with savory accents of lime peel and fresh grass.  A touch of Semillon (10%) and regular lees stirring gives this a bit of extra body and rounds off Sauvignon’s rough edges, but the finish is juicy, mouthwatering, and fresh.  A good deal more sophistication and complexity than you’d expect for this fine value price!

“I tasted excellent wines from MAN Family Wines… This winery has some fabulous values and should be high on the shopping lists of frugal consumers. The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc displays a classic varietal character of freshly mowed grass, melon and grapefruit notes in an authoritative, crisp, fresh, light-bodied, naked style. Drink it over the next year.”Wine Advocate 87 points

Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Product #28207 (In Stock)
Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013 Gosford Reserve Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2013

Back before Aussie Shiraz started to taste the same - thick, heavy, and laboring under a load of over-toasted oak - we used to find great value reds like this with ease.  Harder now, but still very much possible as one sip of the fresh, clean, and just 13.9% abv Gossford Shiraz shows.  This is all about ripe Shiraz fruit - black grape, black plum, blackberry, cherry and more - with great lift from juicy fruit acids.  The well-moderated oak treatment (6 months in French and American barrels) adds attractive spice and smoke notes and rounds off Syrah's rough edges without getting in the way of drinking fun.  "Fun" is really what this fantastic value red is all about.  And, at this price, you can share it with a crowd or just enjoy the fun anytime by itself or with everything from grilled beef to pizza.

Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Product #28255 (In Stock)
Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012 Recorba Ribera Del Duero Tinto 2012

The Recorba Ribera del Duero Tinto is an example of what happens when you get Tempranillo all the way ripe and then let it show it’s colors without any wood at all.  Big aromas and flavors of red plum, black cherry and raspberry take center stage with accents of natural spice, warm stones, and a touch of exotic sandalwood.  Since Dave McIntyre reviewed it last November, it’s settled down and opened up, but still represents a huge “bang for the buck” Tempranillo to enjoy by itself or with pretty much anything you’d put on the grill.

Warning: This is a gateway drug that might get you hooked on the earthy Tempranillos of Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, which typically cost $20 and up. Ribera fans will want to stock up and give their credit cards a break. When I first opened this wine, it was a bit rough-and-tumble, in a good way; two evenings later, it had settled down but was still vibrant and delicious. How often can we say that about a $10 wine?”  Washington Post **1/2

Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2013 Product #28575 (In Stock)
Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2013 Villa Dria Gascogne Blanc Colombard Sauvignon 2013

The motto here is “Gascony seen by a feminine point of view.”  Other than the fact that the estate is led by women, I’m not sure what that really means, but this is a heck of a delicious white for Spring and Summer sipping.  The blend is 80% Colombard – the main white grape in Gascony – for bright acidity and round texture and 20% Sauvignon Blanc for a big burst of fruit and touch of fresh hay.  The fruit flavors coat your palate with ripe green melon, golden apple, and orange/tangerine flavors set off by lemony acids, a dash of minerality, and a whiff of fresh cut grass.  A great summer sipper that delivers Sauvignon Blanc-like flavors that have been softened and tamed by the Colombard.  Yummy with salads, asparagus, shellfish, or just to sip on its own.

Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012 Product #28582 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012 Lopez De Haro Rioja Tempranillo 2012

On tasting this, our first thought:  What a great summer red!  It’s full of fresh, thirst-quenching, strawberry and raspberry fruit with just a touch of oak spice and smoke from the few months it spent “warming up” the new oak barrels to be used for longer-aged Crianza and Reserva Rioja wines.  Drink it with a light chill for maximum refreshment or let it warm up a bit to sing with burgers and hot dogs off the grill.

"The 2012 Lopez de Haro Tempranillo is pure young Tempranillo used to break the new barrels for three to four months, showing the purple color and the exuberance of the young fruit with strawberries, raspberries, flowers and red licorice notes. A pleasure to drink slightly chilled with charcuterie. Refreshing and a real bargain.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2012 Product #27878 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2012 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2012

Long one of our – and Robert Parker’s – “go to” wineries for great value reds, this Campo de Borgia Garnacha specialist has outdone itself with a brilliant 2012.  A perfect bottle to serve to a crowd or sip on its own after a hard day, this will also sing with anything from salmon to burgers or roast pork.

“Expressive aromas of black raspberry, violet and white pepper. Supple, spicy and pliant, with an appealingly sweet quality to the dark berry, spice and floral flavors. Plenty of personality here, especially at the price. Finishes on a refreshingly bitter note, with silky tannins and very good persistence.” International Wine Cellar 89 points

“If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do. The 2012 Borsao Tinto, is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo aged in stainless steel. Made in the fourth straight drought vintage in the province of Zaragoza, this has been a big-time winner in just about every vintage it has been produced. A delicious black cherry, crushed chalk and flower-scented nose jumps from the glass of this richly fruity, medium to full-bodied, supple, velvety-textured red. This mouthfilling 2012 should drink well for several years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Product #27994 (In Stock)
Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone 2010 HALF BOTTLE

Half Bottle!  Another great release from one of the Rhone's most important estates.

"As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

"Offers a roasted feel, with dark bramble, plum and tobacco notes accented by hints of pastis and apple wood, leading to a ganache- and charcoal-infused finish. Distinctive in feel, revealing a prominent yet integrated woodsy element."Wine Spectator 89 points
