For many of you, an opportunity for two “firsts” – your first wine from Moldova and your first pure white wine (not pink – white!) made from the red Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Not sure why the winery went this route, but the results are pretty compelling!  The aromas have some of Sauvignon Blanc's grapefruit and grass notes but the wine's texture is more like Albarino (minerally, sleek) and the flavors of creamy sweet strawberry, pineapple and banana pith suggest something like Verdejo.  There's a snap of jalepeno-like herb on the back, but overall this is nicely cream and fruity and bright.

Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre Valpolicella 2010 Product #27888 (In Stock)
Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre Valpolicella 2010 Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre Valpolicella 2010

Another great vintage for this almost Ripasso Valpolicella.

"The 2010 Palazzo della Torre is 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese that is air-dried until December after the harvest. That brief appassimento has shaped a delicious wine with loads of cherry and dark spice. It’s a great value with the depth of concentration and length that would match a wine double this price. Drink 2013-2018."Wine Advocate 90 points

Amalie Robert Chardonnay Her Silhouette 2011 Product #28072 (In Stock)

The cool 2011 Willamette Valley vintage shows through clear as a bell in this bright, crisp,  no-oak, Chardonnay.  Two blocks of Dijon clones were hand harvested in early November and then fermented and aged in tank with no malolactic fermentation.  The result is a wonderfully fresh and elegant Chardonnay, redolent of pineapple, crisp green apple and mango fruit with zippy accents of ginger and  lemongrass.  The richness of the pure Chardonnay fruit is perfectly balanced by the bright acids on the long, mouthwatering, finish.  Focused, pure, and very delicious.

Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2012 Product #27146 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2012 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2012

If you thought the Washington Post 3-Star 2011 Gmork was good...well, just try the 2012 and you'll be blown away! Once again, a terrific value in a single-vineyard Gruner made by one of Austria's top winemakers, Tony Bauer. Aromas of wet limestone, apple skin and white flowers emerge from the glass.  In the mouth, the wine bursts with gravelly apple and green peach fruit, loads of citrusy acidity and sweet white flowers.  A touch of white pepper emerges on the long, juicy, finish.  Just as fresh and mouthwateringly delicious as the 2011, but even richer, deeper, and more powerful. A great wine to enjoy on its own or with seafood, veal, or even roast pork.  Delicious and stunning value.

Antxiola Txakoli 2013 Product #28262 (In Stock)
Antxiola Txakoli 2013 Antxiola Txakoli 2013

Txakoli is a fresh, zippy style of wine from Spain’s Basque country.  Like Vinho Verde, it’s just slightly fizzy, but not fully sparkling.  But unlike its Portuguese cousin, it’s bone dry, bracingly tart, and very mineral, with aromas of lime skin and something fresh and salty reminiscent of the beach.  This great value Txakoli is a natural match for fresh seafood - or try it with sushi!

This certified sustainable New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc delivers plenty of Kiwi character with a little extra complexity and focus - possibly from 10% Riesling co-fermented with the Sauvignon!  Juicy, bright, and vivacious with generous flavors of pink grapefruit, passion fruit, lemon, lime, and fresh grass.  There's a nice minerality on the mouthwatering finish.  Generous, but nicely in control, this will be just as at home on the table as it is by itself on the back deck.

Au Bon Climat Hildegard White Blend 2009 Product #28061 (In Stock)

Developed as a hommage to very old-fashioned white Burgundy - from the days before Chardonnay was the dominant grape - this is an exotic blend of 55% Pinot Gris, 40% Pinot Blanc, and 5% Aligote all aged in new French oak.  Wild aromas of stone fruit, orange zest, lemon, and smoky oak that gets spicier with air.  It's rich and complex on the palate with flavors of juicy nectarine, pear, and candied citrus with baking spice notes that turn smoky on the long, sweetly fruited, finish.  Brilliant with rich, buttery, poultry or shellfish - and a steal at almost half off!

Avalon Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #28231 (In Stock)

Another solid vintage for what must be one of Napa's most consistent "top value" Cabernet Sauvignon's.  Sappy, fruit-forward, aromas of currant, cherry and blackberry lead to a soft, supple, mouthful of plum, currant and dark berry fruit with accents of cedar, fresh herb, and spice.  The plush velvet tannins give support but don't get in the way of enjoying this easygoing Napa red.

Baer Chardonnay "Shard" Washington 2011 Product #26604 (In Stock)
Baer Chardonnay Baer Chardonnay

No oak here, but tons and tons of flavor.  Just 390 cases made of this wine that starts with pristine fruit fermented in stainless steel and then made creamier by regular lees stirring.  Aromas and flavors of heirloom apples and orchard fruits shine here with an intriguing savory note weaving in and out as well.  Clean, crisp, and a little creamy with a hint of salty caramel on the long, juicy, finish.  Fine stuff.

"Subdued aromas of peach, nut meats and mint, plus a hint of crab apple. Supple, rich and broad, with good chewy extract to the stone fruit and spice flavors. Finishes saline, tactile and persistent. I certainly don't miss the oak."International Wine Cellar 89 points

Baracchi O'lillo Toscana 2012 Product #27943 (In Stock)
Baracchi O'lillo Toscana 2012 Baracchi O'lillo Toscana 2012

Fruit comes from three different vineyards:  San Martino at 300  meters (where the winery is located), Gabbiano (closer to  Montepulciano and excellent for Syrah and Cabernet), and Montanare (where Sangiovese and Merlot grow on hills fought over by Romans and Carthaginians during the Punic Wars).  The grapes are hand harvested and given gentle fermentations in neutral oak vats before aging in tank and bottling early to preserve fresh fruit and vibrant acids.

The Wine Spectator review seems spot on to us, although we’d note that this really delicious now for the gobs of primary fruit and touch of licorice and spice flavors.  A rare deal on a truly “Super” Tuscan red that will just get better and better with time.

"Round, vibrant and juicy, packing plenty of cherry, raspberry and spice flavors. Broad-shouldered and powerful, this remains focused on the fruit. Shows fine length, echoing cherry, spice and mineral notes. Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Best from 2016 through 2025."Wine Spectator 92 points

Basel Cellars Claret Walla Walla 2009 Product #27297 (In Stock)
Basel Cellars Claret Walla Walla 2009 Basel Cellars Claret Walla Walla 2009

Plenty of ripeness from this Washington State Bordeaux blend, but also a sense of freshness and clarity to the fruit and spice flavors to go along with overt oak barrel notes.  Great for beef or lamb on the grill.

"Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and syrah. Bright red-ruby. Briary dark raspberry, smoke and underbrush on the nose, with a subtle floral quality as well as some superripe suggestions. Fat, sweet and quite ripe on the palate, but a bit sullen and youthfully medicinal today. Has the stuffing to support its serious tannins, but nonetheless shows a slight green edge on the back."International Wine Cellar 89 points

You wouldn't guess 2011 was a difficult vintage for California Cabernet from this lovely, ripe, and very pure Alexander Valley example.  Full of bright red currant fruit and gentle oak spice aromas and flavors with just a touch of varietal fresh tobacco.  The fruit comes to the fore on the long, satisfying, finish where a coffee note lingers nicely.  A fun, fine value Cabernet for food or solo sipping.

Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Product #28229 (In Stock)
Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011

As Steve Tanzer said about the 2010, "This wine isn't shy about the fruit." From dry-farmed, old vines, grown in the scrubby vineyards of Campo de Borgia, this delivers a huge mouthful of intense Garnacha flavors:  black and red raspberry, black and Bing cherry, licorice, white pepper and more.  Plenty of ripeness, especially on the back where a kirsch-like flavor emerges, but it's also savory black pepper and fine lift and energy. Finishes dry and even a little floral with dark berry lingering on.  Fun to sip; great with any rustic food.  A steal.

As always, the folks at Talley do a fine job with their "no oak" Bishop's Peak program. More aromatic than many inexpensive Chardonnays, this features aromas of ripe golden apples and pears.  On the palate, no oak and no malolactic fermentation keep it fresh and crisp, with flavors of more tart green apples and a little citrus zest.  A great everyday Chardonnay for light poultry dishes or sipping before a meal.
