Alcesti Nero d'Avola 2013 Alcesti Nero d'Avola 2013

Nero d'Avola, the main red grape of sunny Sicily, can get a little over the top, but here's proof that it can be fresh, vibrant, and fun to drink, too!  Attractive aromas of red berry and dried strawberry get just a touch of warm spice complexity.  On the palate it's juicy and refreshing, with dried blackberry and black cherry fruit and a touch of warm plum tart.  The bright finish makes this fun to just sip and a nice match for swordfish, poultry, or even lamb.

Ripe, pure, sophisticated.

"Made from a block of Syrah vines that are planted on steep, granite soils (which is unique as this region is mostly limestone) facing the Mediterranean Sea, the 2013 Corse XX270 sports an inky purple color to go with incredible granite influence in its liquid rock, blackberry, raspberry, floral and peppery bouquet. Alexander Valley Gewurztraminer Mendocino 2014 Alexander Valley Gewurztraminer Mendocino 2014

A delightful, very aromatic, treat from a winery better known for Cabernet and Zinfandel.  From a tiny vineyard in Medocino, this serves up extravagant aromas of white fruit, lychee fruit, ginger, and baking spice.  On the palate, it's rich and loaded with grapefruit and pear flavors to go with the gingery spice and then turns very dry, even crisp, on the finish with ginger and rose petal notes lingering behind.  Fun stuff and a terrific value.  Try it!

Allamand Malbec Mendoza 2013 Allamand Malbec Mendoza 2013

We don’t know much (anything, actually) about the producer here, but this is a terrific, characterful, bottle of Malbec for the money! Much more complex and food-friendly than most wines in its class, here you’ll find rich, earthy, aromas leading to a medium-bodied palate with black fruit, baking spice, and one last kick of smoky earth.  The black plum and blackberry fruit linger nicely, while the earthy components make this a killer match for lamb or pork.

Almirez Toro 2012 Product #29786 (In Stock)
Almirez Toro 2012 Almirez Toro 2012

A blockbuster Toro Tempranillo that remains remarkably fresh.

"Opaque purple. Smoky blueberry and cherry compote aromas pick up a peppery nuance with air, along with a subtle mocha quality. Fleshy and seamless on the palate, offering sweet, concentrated black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of lavender pastille. Spreads out nicely on the juicy, penetrating finish, which is framed by silky, slow-building tannins."  Vinous 92 points

"The 2012 Almirez (a 1,000-case cuvée of 100% Tinta de Toro) was aged 14 months in French oak. This sensational wine comes from vines planted between 1949 and 1999. Yields were a conservative 1.8 tons of fruit per acre. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas of camphor, ground pepper, blackberries and cassis. This full-bodied, Northern Rhône Valley-like Spanish red exhibits meaty/lard notes, terrific density and purity, and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds. It should drink nicely for a decade or more."Wine Advocate 93 points

"A polished texture conceals the solid structure in this muscular red, which offers currant and blackberry flavors that show notes of espresso and tar. Gamy and savory accents lend this an austere character, but fresh acidity maintains liveliness. Best from 2016 through 2024."Wine Spectator 90 points

Alonso Del Yerro Ribera Del Duero 2010 Alonso Del Yerro Ribera Del Duero 2010

Rich and frankly flashy but with enough structure to pair up with steak or lamb nicely.

"The 2010 Crianza is a selection of Tempranillo grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 10-15 months in a combination of new (15%) and used French oak barrels. The nose is very expressive, fresh, with a mixture of red and black fruit, developing complexity and absorbing the oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied with clean, delineated flavors. This is a superb value for money. Drink now-2020."Wine Advocate 93 points

A big Malbec that stays poised and focused, with half the wine raised in tank for freshness.

"The opaque purple-colored 2012 Malbec is a big (14.5% natural alcohol), 1,800-case cuvee that spent time in both neutral tanks (50%) and oak (50%). It reveals some spicy oak notes along with a big, sweet kiss of blackberry and black raspberry fruit as well as hints of camphor and white flowers. Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2014 Product #29889 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2014 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2014

The Gmörk vineyard lies on loess and gravel soils in Austria’s excellent Wagram region.  There’s plenty of sunny warmth in this South-facing site, so the fruit ripens beautifully.  But the nearby Danube river channels cool air down from the Northwest, slowing the growing cycle and letting the grapes develop extra flavor and aroma while retaining fine freshness and acidity.  Anton has all the grapes harvested by hand at the peak of ripeness, even taking on the extra cost of making multiple passes through the vineyard when necessary.  It’s hard work and the kind of expense you rarely see in a Grüner intended to sell for under $20.

2014 was a tough vintage in most of Austria, but with careful work in the vineyard and winery, the folks at Anton Bauer were able to produce a vibrant, fresh Gruner for us to enjoy all fall long. Aromas of pear, green peach, and wet stone invite you to take a sip and enjoy the juicy acidity and hint of Gruner's signature white pepper on the finish.

"A subtle nose of lemon leads to a chorus of zesty, citrusy freshness: rind of lemon, grapefruit and mandarin make for a streamlined, concentrated and incredibly refreshing palate with a tangy moreishness. The purity of this wine shines. This is lovely now but will develop through 2020."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Antxiola Txakoli 2014 Product #29709 (In Stock)
Antxiola Txakoli 2014 Antxiola Txakoli 2014

Txakoli is a fresh, zippy style of wine from Spain’s Basque country.  Like Vinho Verde, it’s just slightly fizzy, but not fully sparkling.  But unlike its Portuguese cousin, it’s bone dry, bracingly tart, and very mineral, with aromas of lime skin and something fresh and salty reminiscent of the beach.  This great value Txakoli is a natural match for fresh seafood - or try it with sushi!

The new release of this certified sustainable New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc once again delivers plenty of Kiwi character with a little extra complexity and focus - possibly from 10% Riesling co-fermented with the Sauvignon!  Juicy, bright, and vivacious with generous flavors of pink grapefruit, passion fruit, lemon, lime, and fresh grass.  There's a nice minerality on the mouthwatering finish.  Generous, but nicely in control, this will be just as at home on the table as it is by itself on the back deck.

Azienda Agricola 499 Freisa Langhe 2013 Product #30482 (In Stock)
Azienda Agricola 499 Freisa Langhe 2013 Azienda Agricola 499 Freisa Langhe 2013

Let's start with the winery name - it comes from the altitude of the winery at 499 meters above sea level near the Piemonte village of Camo.  Then, the mission:  to make excellent, sit-specific, wines from under-appreciated Piemonte grapes:  Moscato (for whites) and Freisa (for sort of reds).  Not surprisingly, and despite the altitude, this is still an under-the-radar winery!

But, if the offbeat appeals to you and you already enjoy Northern Italy's light, but flavorful, reds like Schiava and Grignolino, then this delicious Freisa is for you.  Translucent cherry red in the glass, it bursts with exotic scents of tangy cherry, ripe strawberry, and crushed red flowers.  All that and more carries on to the vibrant, mouthwatering, palate with firm tannins giving grip and cherry/floral extract providing  mouthwatering lift.  Just 5 barrels made, and all are perfect with salami, cheese, and grilled veggies.

Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana 2014 Product #30356 (In Stock)
Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana 2014 Baracchi O'Lillo Toscana 2014

Customers like you have been enjoying this luscious Super Tuscan blend from vineyards near Cortona for years, and the 2014 edition is another winner.  Fruit comes from three different vineyards:  San Martino at 300 meters (where the winery is located), Gabbiano (closer to  Montepulciano and excellent for Syrah and Cabernet), and Montanare (where Sangiovese and Merlot grow on hills fought over by Romans and Carthaginians during the Punic Wars).  The grapes are hand harvested and given gentle fermentations in neutral oak vats before aging in tank and bottling early to preserve fresh fruit and vibrant acids.

James Suckling’s 93 point review seems spot on to us, although we’d note that this really delicious now for the pure primary fruit and touch of licorice and spice flavors.  If you’re planning lamb or pork roast for dinner anytime soon – or even a rich pasta and red sauce dish – this will sing at table.  And, any super-Tuscan fan will be delighted to find a bottle of this great choice for long-term cellaring under the tree. A rare deal on a truly “Super” Tuscan red that will just get better and better with time.

"Lots of blackcurrants, grapes and lemon zest character. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. It's firm and very tight. Compact structure. Delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese. Better in 2018. "  James Suckling 93 points

As with the 92 point 2012 edition, this is once again a super-steal of a super-Tuscan red.  Broad-shouldered and powerful, it pumps out black cherry, blackberry, and black plum fruit with generous does of warm spice and expensive leather.  The dark fruit and spice fan out on the satisfying, long, finish.

Belle Pente Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2012 Product #30179 (In Stock)
Belle Pente Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2012 Belle Pente Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2012

One of those captivating wines that somehow manages to be really rich and really crisp at the same time!  You'll find loads of ripe pear, spice, and orchard flower on the nose and mid-palate, with yellow/green citrus adding lift and mouthwatering refreshment.  Delicious stuff.

"The 2012 Pinot Gris is mainly estate grown and is one-third fermented in foudres. It has a pleasant, light apricot blossom and beeswax-scented bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. It is quite Alsace-like in style. The palate is well balanced with a light honeyed note on the entry. The acidity is well judged and it gradually builds to a honeycomb, white pepper and orange rind-tinged finish. This is a well-crafted Pinot Gris with plenty of personality."Wine Advocate 89 points
