O Fournier Urban Uco Malbec 2012 Product #27601 (In Stock)
O Fournier Urban Uco Malbec 2012 O Fournier Urban Uco Malbec 2012

A savory expression of Malbec - beefy and rich but with bright acids.

"The 2012 Urban Uco Malbec spent three months in oak barrels. The bouquet is well-defined with blackberry, boysenberry, touches of dark chocolate and anise. The palate offers chunky black fruit on the entry. It is fresh, a little rough round the edges, but true to what an unadulterated Malbec should be. For this price: unbeatable."Wine Advocate 90 points

Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Product #27452 (In Stock)
Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012 Le Souchais (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2012

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  Rain, hail, and wind cut the Chardonnay harvest by about 40% in 2012, giving the Couillauds unusually concentrated, powerful, fruit.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with super energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  This will be fantastic with rich seafood dishes and fresh cheeses.

Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Friuli 2013 Product #28571 (In Stock)
Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Friuli 2013 Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Friuli 2013

If you think Pinot Grigio is a neutral, flavorless, watery wine – well, you just haven’t tried the new release of this long-time customer favorite!  It’s wonderfully aromatic, with notes of crisp pear, fresh apple, white flower blossom and a touch of spice jumping from the glass.  The texture is as light, crisp, and refreshing as ever, but the flavors are bold and satisfying with notes of spicy pear, juicy green apple, tangy apricot, and just a hint of almond.  The fruit flavors keep on pumping through the long, mouthwatering, finish where the pear juice and citrus flavors linger. A great all-purpose summer white to enjoy on its own or with everything from shellfish to grilled chicken.

Di Lenardo Sauvignon Blanc Friuli 2013 Product #28627 (In Stock)
Di Lenardo Sauvignon Blanc Friuli 2013 Di Lenardo Sauvignon Blanc Friuli 2013

Massimo Di Lenardo says, “My philosophy is to emphasize the grape’s pure fruitiness and acidity without the masking affects of oak.”  And that’s the key to this extraordinary value Friuli Sauvignon Blanc, a wine that avoids the excessive earthiness and/or obtrusive oak treatments all too common in Italian Sauvignon Blanc.

This is a fantastic Sauvignon Blanc for folks who want a taste of New Zealand fruitiness restrained and shaped by Sancerre-like minerality and cut.  The aromas burst with ripe green melon, orange zest, and mango fruit with a beguiling touch of crushed mint and herb.  It’s round and fleshy in your mouth at first, with big ripe fruit flavors before lemon/lime acidity and a dash of crushed stone bring things to a dry, mouthwatering, finish.  A killer bottle to enjoy with Vietnamese or cilantro-laced Latin foods or with any kind of goat or sheep’s milk cheese.  Lot of wine for the money here!

Di Lenardo Chardonnay Friuli 2013 Product #28628 (In Stock)
Di Lenardo Chardonnay Friuli 2013 Di Lenardo Chardonnay Friuli 2013

It’s a little surprising that the grape least associated with Friuli – Chardonnay – should deliver one of the most exciting wines in this line-up.  But, then, this isn’t “just” Chardonnay.  When Massimo Di Lendardo took over his family estate in 1987, he launched a massive replanting effort to increase vine density and focus on the very best clones for his Friuli vineyards.  For this wine, that meant the “Chardonnay Musque” clone, a mutation that retains all of Chardonnay’s body and crisp fruit but adds a layer of floral and pit fruit aromatics.

It’s been a winning choice, with Di Lenardo Chardonnay earning 89-91 points from Wine Spectator each year for the past five!  And, the review for the 90 point 2012 fits well here:  “A stony undertow and well-meshed acidity frames the flavors of yellow apple, apricot, anise, slivered almond and honeycomb in this bright and balanced version. A crowd-pleaser.” This is no-oak, 100% fun, Chardonnay that will sing with a wide range of food or delight while sipping at sunset.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012 Product #27353 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  Great value, too.

Santa Barbara Verdicchio 2013 Product #28073 (In Stock)

Definitely the best vintage yet for this always popular DOC Verdicchio in the traditional curvy bottle. Really bursts with dried lemon, pink grapefruit, Granny Smith apple fruit made even better by a nice dose of stony minerality and a dash of fresh herb. It glides across your palate like silk then finishes brisk and clean and fresh.  Great wine for seafood and salads or just to sip. Under-priced for the quality.

Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2012 Product #28504 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2012 Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2012

A classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%). This is a soft, fruit filled, take on Bordeaux that fills your mouth with juicy red currant and black berry fruit accented by a touch of spice.  Subtle notes of fresh herb and tobacco keep this anchored in Bordeaux, and there’s just the enough ripe tannin to let it work well at table (but not enough to get in the way of solo sipping).

A delicious, exotic, and wild Torrontes that somehow retains enough focus and control to work with food, too. It's a bit like a cross between Muscat (exotic fruit and floral notes) and Gewurztraminer (ginger and warm spice) with loads of peach and mango at the core.  Lovely sweetness to the fruit flavors and fine acidity to balance the lite residual sugar at the end.  Exciting stuff!

Terredora Di Paolo Falanghina Irpinia 2012 Terredora Di Paolo Falanghina Irpinia 2012

Falanghina is a wine that is often described as fun, or yummy, but rarely as elegant.  This, friends, is an elegant Falanghina.  The exotic aromas of pineapple and quince are still there, but they are less flamboyant and obvious.  On the palate, it's moutfilling and finishes with fresh, juicy acids, but what really impresses is its sophisticated texture - not to heavy, but not too light.  Perfect seafood and warm summer nights.

"This mouthfilling red displays unctuous plum and boysenberry fruit flavors that course along nicely, thanks to lively spice and toasted anise notes, with a strong graphite steak. Fleshy, but excellent acidity is well-embedded on the finish. Drink now through 2015."Wine Spectator 90 points

Bodegas Carrau Sauvignon Blanc "Sur Lie" 2013 Product #28377 (In Stock)
Bodegas Carrau Sauvignon Blanc Bodegas Carrau Sauvignon Blanc

This delicious Sauvignon Blanc is from the cool coastal regions of Uruguay where the weather and soil resemble the best white wine production areas of Bordeaux and New Zealand.  Grown and made by a 10th generation family winemaker, the wine is picked and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks and then given six months of “sur lie” (on the lees) contact to preserve fruit and add depth and complexity.

We’ve carried this for years now, and I’m confident this is the best vintage yet, serving up all the fruit and flavor you’ve come to love with just a touch more class and grace.  Big aromas of freshly zested tangerine and pink grapefruit with a dash of lime open the show.  Then you’ll get a mouthful of luscious ripe Mandarin orange, ruby red grapefruit, tangerine, and a hint of tropical pineapple and papaya.  The time “sur lie” gives this a creamy, rich, almost Chardonnay-like texture in the middle before zesty citrus acidity, bitter tangerine oil, and just the barest hint of spritz clear your palate and make you ready for the next sip.  Easy to drink on its own and great with summer grilled seafood or any Asian dish!

Bodegas Luis Canas Fermentado En Barrica Blanco 2013 Product #28589 (In Stock)
Bodegas Luis Canas Fermentado En Barrica Blanco 2013 Bodegas Luis Canas Fermentado En Barrica Blanco 2013

If you’re enjoyed our long-time favorite white Rioja value from Martinez Lacuesta, then you owe it to yourself to step up a couple of dollars and try this beauty.  And, if you enjoy the rich texture of barrel fermented Chardonnay but crave a bit of Sauvignon Blanc’s citrus fruit, cut, and refreshment during warm Summer months, then don’t miss this!

It's a simply delicious white Rioja that’s bursting with fresh lemon zest, apricot, and lime fruit around a core of lemon custard plus just a touch of exotic fresh coconut nuance.  Give it a little air, and notes of dried grapefruit, beeswax, and honeysuckle emerge on the nose and more citrus peel and spicy ginger come out on the palate and juicy, refreshing, finish.  Crazy complex and delicious for the price.

"Vanilla, honeyed oak and floral aromas. Superbly balanced palate with excellent clarity and a firm mineral component showing grapefruit citrus and toasty oak. An 85/15 blend of old vine (50 years) Viura and Malvasia fermented and aged in new oak (75% French, 25% American) for 4 months with lees stirring. A precise, crystal clean wine that improves the longer it's open."i-Wine Review 90 points

For many of you, an opportunity for two “firsts” – your first wine from Moldova and your first pure white wine (not pink – white!) made from the red Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Not sure why the winery went this route, but the results are pretty compelling!  The aromas have some of Sauvignon Blanc's grapefruit and grass notes but the wine's texture is more like Albarino (minerally, sleek) and the flavors of creamy sweet strawberry, pineapple and banana pith suggest something like Verdejo.  There's a snap of jalepeno-like herb on the back, but overall this is nicely cream and fruity and bright.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.
