Dom Brunet Pinot Noir Pays d' Oc 2014 Product #30508 (In Stock)

A whole lot of Pinot Noir for the money here, marrying French elegance with New World ripeness.  Sweetly fruited with notes of baked cherry and dark raspberry plus added complexity from doses of earthy mineral and warm spice.  Spiced raspberry and black cherry flavors linger on the soft, supple, finish with just enough bite for shape and structure.  Fun stuff and great value!

Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011 Product #29191 (In Stock)
Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011 Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011

This has been a Spanish value staple for years now, and the 2011 is yet another fine Toro Tempranillo.  The wine is 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo), hand harvested from vines 30+ years-old. There’s plenty of ripe Temparnillo fruit here – cherry, blackberry and plum – and very nice doses of wood spice and the grape’s exotic sandalwood fragrance.  But cool nights on the vine and careful treatment in the winery leave a bright, refreshing, acidity in place as well and the smooth, refined, tannins don’t get in the way of solo sipping pleasure.  A lot of wine for a very  modest price.

"Deep ruby. Smoky cherry and roasted coffee on the nose, with attractive floral and spicecake notes. Lush and expansive in the mouth, offering broad cherry and cassis flavors and a hint of licorice. A suave, gently sweet and open-knit wine, with a spicy element emerging on the long, gently tannic finish."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2014 Product #30153 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2014 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2014

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  Great value, too.

If you liked the 2006 Pericou, then the 2010 will take your breath away.  From one of Bordeaux's greatest modern vintages, the 2010 Pericou delivers all the complexity and classic Bordeaux character of the 2006 with more freshness and power.  Ripe blackcurrant and berry fruit are framed by notes of cedar and crushed herb and supported by juicy acids and silky smooth tannins.  Delicious right now and for 5-8 years.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro K Rosso Alto Adige 2014 Product #30464 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro K Rosso Alto Adige 2014 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro K Rosso Alto Adige 2014

We confess to being huge fans of Kellerei Kaltern, the outstanding cooperative winery perched in the foothills of the Dolomites just outside Balzano, Italy.  The Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco from the hills sloping down to Lake Kaltern are mainstays here, but it's the lake-side reds that are most special to us.

Both the very popular Schiava and gutsier Lagrein bottlings rely on older vines, so the winery created this blend to feature younger vines (up to 30 years) of both.  The light-colored Schiava give this wonderful aromas and flavors of cherry, lilac, and rose petal while the more powerful Lagrein adds black raspberry, plum, and licorice notes.  Light - just 12.5% abv - but packs a big flavor punch.  Try it cool with a spread of cheese and cured meat and we think you'll be convinced!

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Product #30665 (In Stock)
Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015

The 2015 growing season and harvest was monumental across most of Europe - and if you have doubts, just one big sniff and deep sip of this 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Carignan blend from the heart of the Southern Rhone will convince you.

Super deep aromas of roasted raspberries and cherries with earthy, chocolaty, undertones really burst from the glass. The palate is more like an old-school Chateuaneuf du Pape than Cotes du Rhone, with layers of rich raspberry, black plum and blackberry fruit accented by sweet and savory spice and a deep, rich, earthy/meaty depth. The tannins are fine-grained and sweet and the acidity shockingly fresh for such a ripe, rich, flavorful Rhone. It's a ton of wine for the money right now, but as it gains fleshy richness over the next few years, it will become about a fine a Rhone buy as we've ever seen. Do not miss.

Drei Dona Le Vigne Nuove Sangiovese Emilia Romagna 2012 Product #30483 (In Stock)
Drei Dona Le Vigne Nuove Sangiovese Emilia Romagna 2012 Drei Dona Le Vigne Nuove Sangiovese Emilia Romagna 2012

Tuscan Sangiovese gets all the glory, but Italy's most important black grape shines almost anywhere in Italy where warm sunshine is balanced by cool nights and were sandy clay soils balance water availability with good drainage.  Sangiovese has thrived in Emilia-Romagna, just north of Tuscany, for centeruies and on the Drei Dona farm in for a couple hundred years, at least.

This bottling, from the estate's younger vines and more forward barrels, is a fine choice for casual sipping and dining, especially with rich pastas or savory pizza.  You'll find generous dollops of Sangiovese's typical bright cherry fruit on the nose and palate, plus a nice dose of meaty, leathering, complexity and hints of licorice and violets from 15% other local grapes.  It turns a bit meatier and richer with air, but juicy acids and dusty tannins keep this fresh and fun from first sip to last.

The Recorba Ribera del Duero Tinto is an example of what happens when you get Tempranillo all the way ripe and then let it show it’s colors without any wood at all.  Big aromas and flavors of red plum, black cherry and raspberry take center stage with accents of natural spice, warm stones, and a touch of exotic sandalwood.  A huge “bang for the buck” Tempranillo to enjoy by itself or with pretty much anything you’d put on the grill.

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #30213 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

One of the Rhone's most consistent values, Segries Cotes du Rhone is a shining success in 2014.  Made from declassified Lirac grapes, it's a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% each Cinsault and Carignan done almost entirely in tank.  Aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.

From a small Barbaresco producer, this fresh and fruity Barbera delivers a lot more complexity and satisfaction than it's humble price suggests.  Fresh and juicy Bing/black cherry fruit roll across your tongue with accents of fresh leather and aged Balsamic.  Long on the palate and mouthwatering finish where very light tannin gives a little extra support.  A pretty sophisticated wine for the price - great with pizza, pasta, or even on its own.

Much more complex and food-friendly than most wines in its class, here you’ll find rich, earthy, aromas leading to a medium-bodied palate with black fruit, baking spice, and one last kick of smoky earth.  The black plum and blackberry fruit linger nicely, while the earthy components make this a killer match for lamb or pork.

Espelt Garnacha Emporda Old Vines 2013 Product #30278 (In Stock)
Espelt Garnacha Emporda Old Vines 2013 Espelt Garnacha Emporda Old Vines 2013

A bold, juicy, red that finishes smooth and rich.

"This stunning custom cuvee from Eric Solomon was made with the help of Frenchman Jean-Marc Lafage. From granite soils around Spain’s Costa Brava, just two kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, some of the grapes in this wine come from old vines dating back to 1900. The 2013 Garnacha Old Vines (100% Grenache aged four months in new and used French oak) boasts remarkable intensity as well as richness along with lots of strawberry, wild, briery mountain fruit and hints of spice, flowers, underbrush and Mediterranean herbs. The sweet tannin, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and luscious personality have resulted in a gorgeous wine to enjoy over the next several years. Happily, 14,000 cases have been imported to the U.S."Wine Advocate 90 points

Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2013 Silver Ridge Pinot Noir California 2013

The best thing about big harvests in great years like 2013 is how many top-notch "little" wines get made.  Here you'll find generous aromas of cherry, cranberry and mint leading to flavors of maraschino cherry, plum, and red berry with just a hint of spice and orange blossom. The light, fresh, texture, soft tannins, and juicy acids make this a delicious quaffer, although there's enough support for it to work with salmon or pork.  Outstanding value in balanced, easygoing, Pinot Noir.

Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Product #30699 (In Stock)
Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Odoardi Savuto Red 2013

A paradox - how can such a fresh, vibrant, red come from the brutally hot Southern Italian DOC of Savuto in Calabria?  Elevation (Odoardi's vineyards are at up to 2,000 feet) helps, as does a big dose (45%) of Gaglioppo, the soft and bright grape called Arvino locally.  Gaglioppo gives this bright cherry/berry fruit and a soft, round, juicy mid-palate while Aglianico (25%) adds structure and Magliocco Caniino, Greco Nero, and Nerello Cappuccino perfume and complexity.  A great pizza, sausage, pasta, grilled food red, especially with a chill.

Firriato Altavilla Della Corte Syrah 2012 Firriato Altavilla Della Corte Syrah 2012

Sicily's Firriato used to blend this Syrah into their Cabernet Sauvignon, but the wines were just too good on their own to mix up that way any longer!  This 100% Syrah has a definite "New World" bent, with lush blackberry and blueberry fruit and accents of leather and fine French oak spice.  The minerality and smoky notes suggest the Northern Rhone, but the bright, refreshing, acids say "Italy" loud and clear.  Luxurious, mouthwatering, and very long, this makes a great choice for rich dinners or even just sipping.
