Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2014 Product #29889 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2014 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2014

The Gmörk vineyard lies on loess and gravel soils in Austria’s excellent Wagram region.  There’s plenty of sunny warmth in this South-facing site, so the fruit ripens beautifully.  But the nearby Danube river channels cool air down from the Northwest, slowing the growing cycle and letting the grapes develop extra flavor and aroma while retaining fine freshness and acidity.  Anton has all the grapes harvested by hand at the peak of ripeness, even taking on the extra cost of making multiple passes through the vineyard when necessary.  It’s hard work and the kind of expense you rarely see in a Grüner intended to sell for under $20.

2014 was a tough vintage in most of Austria, but with careful work in the vineyard and winery, the folks at Anton Bauer were able to produce a vibrant, fresh Gruner for us to enjoy all fall long. Aromas of pear, green peach, and wet stone invite you to take a sip and enjoy the juicy acidity and hint of Gruner's signature white pepper on the finish.

"A subtle nose of lemon leads to a chorus of zesty, citrusy freshness: rind of lemon, grapefruit and mandarin make for a streamlined, concentrated and incredibly refreshing palate with a tangy moreishness. The purity of this wine shines. This is lovely now but will develop through 2020."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Netzl Rosanna Rose Carnuntum 2015 Product #30644 (In Stock)
Netzl Rosanna Rose Carnuntum 2015 Netzl Rosanna Rose Carnuntum 2015

Christiana Netzl made Austria's red wine of the year for 2015 (the captivating Cuvee Anna Christina 2013 blend of Blaufrankisch and Cabernet Sauvignon), but that didn't distract her from growing some pretty amazing grapes for rosé! This delicious Provencal taste-alike is a blend of Merlot (for herb and spice) and Austria's own Zweigelt (for juicy fruit and fun!), all harvested and pressed just for rosé.

The Carnuntum region shares Provence's warm days courtesy of the warm breeze blowing in daily from the central Eurasia plain, but gets a nightly dose of cool air from the Danube River to the north.  Hot and cool equals a fine fruit and acid balance here in a wine that pumps out generous cherry, red berry and red plum fruit aromas and flavors with a just right whiff of Merlot's vibrant herb.  Generous flavors of strawberry and watermelon shine on the long, dry, but frankly fruity finish.  Serve up some schnitzel!

Ok, stay with us on this one.  From Austria, this a blend of organically grown Gruner Veltliner (50%), Pinot Blanc (20%), and Neuburger (30%), an Austrian crossing of Sylvaner and Roter Veltliner.  Forget the blend, though - it's really just a crackling fresh and delicious everyday white that pumps out generous amounts of lemon, lime, and tangerine fruit with a tiny dash of mineralty and big load of charm.  A fun, refreshing, poolside or back deck sipper at a nice, friendly, price.

Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner T26 Federspiel 2015 Product #30655 (In Stock)
Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner T26 Federspiel 2015 Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner T26 Federspiel 2015

Wow - just plain wow.  If you want to know why 2015 could be one of the greatest vintages ever for Austria's Grüner Veltliner, just try this.  The T26 Grüner comes from a small vineyard – called Frauenweingarten – not far from the winding Danube river in Wachau.  While others might declare this as a named single-vineyard wine and sell it for $25+, Martin feels it’s not quite distinguished enough for that honor.  But, when his importer, Klaus Wittauer, first tasted it from tank (number 26 in the winery), he convinced Marin to bottle it separately – and T26 Grüner was born.

Wachau Grüner has the potential to deliver more volume, richness and intensity than wines from nearby Kamptal, and that’s certainly what you’ll find here.  You can almost smell the concentration in the big aromas of fresh apple, sweet pea, crisp pear, sweet peach, and dusty white pepper. Take a sip and you’ll find it rich and loaded with extract on the palate where tangy pineapple, ripe stone fruit and crushed rock mineral notes fill and coat your mouth with intense flavor.  Sweet spice notes emerge with air and weave in and out of the long, dry, selzer-like, finish.  Stunning stuff that you'd pay $30-$50 for at better known Austrian estates.  It will pair beautifully with fresh asparagus – one of the few wines that works! – and delight with fresh fish, light poultry, and nutty lentil salad dishes.

Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013 Product #29323 (In Stock)
Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013 Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013

Our first thought when tasting this Pinot Gris was “wow!”  This intensely flavored white from Austria’s Burgenland, an area mostly known for reds, is no wussy, bland Pinot Grigio.  It’s hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks with a bit more skin contact than is usual for a white wine.  This allows the wine to pick up more color and flavor from the grapes’ grayish-pink skins.  The aromas are enormously appealing and perfect for fall – pear, nutmeg, ripe, golden apple, and a little hint of ginger.

About 5% of the wine is fermented in used barriques, rounding out the wine’s edges, and giving that sophisticated hint of spice to its flavor profile.  On the palate, those delicious spicy pear flavors carry through.  This wine packs a ton of richness and flavor into a very reasonable 13% ABV.  It finishes snappy and fresh, and that little bit of ginger kicks right back in.  This is the perfect cocktail party white to get everyone’s mouth watering, but its intensity and weight allows it to stand up to pretty robust food.

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2014 Product #29941 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2014 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2014

Like its stablemate “Grand Grü,” which we feature every year around Thanksgiving, Karl and Brigitta Steininger’s all tank Kamptal Grüner has been a staff and customer favorite here for years.  Start with the wonderful, summery, aromatics of yellow peach, peach skin, and wet stone minerality that really jump out of the glass.  Then notice the ripe fruit flavors – peach puree, yellow pear, apricot and golden apple – framed with touches of baking spice, citrus zest, and river stone.  Finally, enjoy how the peach turns tangy and a touch of lime and green apple come out on the finish and make your mouth water and face break out into a smile.  All this flavor intensity in a wine that hovers comfortably around 13% abv and costs much, much, less than you’d expect.

Everything we love about Austrian Gruner Veltliner is on display here, including a price about $10 less than the wine is worth!  Aromas and flavors are all about Gruner's classic apple, under-ripe pineapple, and stone fruit notes with accents of green pea, fresh herb, and white pepper.  Nice intensity, but no hard edges, here in a wine that finishes with a burst of selzer-like minerality and loads of ripe, juicy, fruit.  Fun and fine.

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Product #30424 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013

A happy ending to a scary accident.  When Ernst Steindorfer fell and hit his head during the 2010 vintage, he temporarily lost his sense of smell.  Unable to evaluate his individual cuvees of Austria’s top native grapes - Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt – to choose Reserve lots, he elected to just blend an equal number of barrels from his best vineyard plots to create kind of a “baby-Reserve.”  It turned out so well, now he’s done it for a third time – and, with sense of smell intact, it’s even better!

About as fine a cookout red as you’ll find this year, the 2013 Apetlon serves up savory aromas of smoke, sour cherry, sweet blackberry, licorice and lavender.  The flavors are bright and juicy – roasted strawberry and blackberry puree – with complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to handle sausages or burgers and has enough rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to excel with lamb.

“A distinct whiff of tiny, black elderberries promises joy. This is joined by white pepper and iron oxide to play on luscious but soft red and black fruit. The spice is exciting and pervasive and highlighted by freshness. The fine balance this strikes is expressed as straight-laced elegance. What unpretentious, honest joy.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2014 Product #30749 (In Stock)

Year after year, Leo Hillinger’s Pinot Noir Eveline is one of the best sub-$20 Pinot Noirs we’re able to find.  The 2014 is delicious once again. Leo grows his Pinot Noir in Austria’s Burgenland region, where warm air from Central Europe’s Pannonian Plain is balanced by cool breezes and mist from the shallow glacial lake called the Neusiedler See.  Warmth and bright sunshine help Pinot Noir develop its full range of aromas and flavors – cherry, strawberry, blueberry, warm spice, fresh flowers, and damp earth – while retaining a spine of juicy acidity and fine, crisp, tannins.

At first pour, this smells just like a really good $35 Central Coast Pinot with layers of bright red fruit, warm spice, dusty mineral, and a touch of cola.  Take a sip and you’ll find ripe, sweet, fruit riding over base notes of cola and spice and just a touch of fresh earth and smoke.  With a little air (or time in cellar), the wine gets richer, weightier, and more smoky but the pure Pinot fruit holds center stage and a juicy squirt of cranberry acidity and fine-grained tannins give lovely support. Whether you’re looking for an everyday sipper or a great match for ham, lamb, or salmon, it’s a wine you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again!

So, what happens when you take a great still wine – in this case, the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Kamptal– and give it a little fizz?  Pure joy ensues!

Steininger is Kamptal’s top producer of sparkling wines and one of the very best in all of Austria.  The family specializes in single varietal, single vintage, fizz that showcases the character of the grape and growing season.  The 2013 Grüner Veltliner Sekt is a beauty, at once creamy and full of classic Grüner fruit and terrifically dry and vibrant.  The in-bottle secondary fermentation delivers plenty of fizz, but this still reads “Grüner” with bright apple, green pea, and white pepper notes.  Easy to sip on its own and fun to pair with savory sausage or freshwater fish.

Steindorfer Seewinkel Beerenauslese 2013 Product #30825 (In Stock)

The lowlands near Austria's glacial lake Neusiedlersee create the perfect conditions for great sweet wines - sunny days and foggy mornings that allow Botrytis - aka Noble Rot - to develop and concentrate grape sugars.  Here, Ernst Steindorfer uses shriveled berries of Scheurebe, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc to create a dense, layered, wine redolent of spiced honey, peach, pear, and apricot jam.  Round and deeply sweet on the palate, the brilliant acids come up on the finish to pull you back for another sip.

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2013 Product #29611 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2013 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2013

Karl and Eva Steininger make a range of delicious wines from Austria’s best white grape, and they intend the Grand Grü to be the top of their line.  The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner!  Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October.  The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large Acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

Pour a glass and you’ll meet generous aromas of creamy ripe pear, peach, and apricot.  Take a sip and you’ll find autumn fruits – golden pear and apple – plus lime zest and citrus with a dash of baking spice and hints of classing Grüner white pepper.  The texture is creamy and rich with plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and refreshing.  The finish is long, mouthwatering, and features a hint of lime, ginger and spice as it lingers.  Rich and round enough to handle the full range of Thanksgiving Dinner favorites and clean and juicy enough to keep you coming back for more.

"Seriously savory watercress and yeast notes take the aromatic lead. The palate follows suit with pepperiness and lemony, citric verve. Zippy, lively and fresh, but with weight and resonance."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

It serves up wild aromatics of white and stone fruit, exotic spice, white pepper and a hint of caramel.  All those notes and more pour out across your palate in a rich wine with fine density and amazing cut, vibrancy, and drive.  The finish is wonderfully long, leaving mouthwatering fresh fruits, white pepper, and a touch of lemon zest lingering.
