Prendas Vermentino Di Sardegna 2012 Prendas Vermentino Di Sardegna 2012

From Italy's island of Sardinia, this classic Vermentino is both delicious and a screaming value!  Made and aged in tank with brief lees contact to add a little body, it shows off cut apple, lemon, melon and a whiff of orange blossom. Nicely bright and juicy, this has enough fruit to drink on its own but will shine with a seafood salad with fennel or ceviche with orange.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012 Product #27353 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2012

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  Great value, too.

Santa Barbara Verdicchio 2013 Product #28073 (In Stock)

Definitely the best vintage yet for this always popular DOC Verdicchio in the traditional curvy bottle. Really bursts with dried lemon, pink grapefruit, Granny Smith apple fruit made even better by a nice dose of stony minerality and a dash of fresh herb. It glides across your palate like silk then finishes brisk and clean and fresh.  Great wine for seafood and salads or just to sip. Under-priced for the quality.

Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2009 Product #26941 (In Stock)
Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2009 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2009

Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri and “Best Value of the Year”!  The highest honor awarded by the Italian’s guide to Italian wine doesn’t often go to wines from Puligia, much less wines that sell for this price.  From vineyards around the little Pulgia town of Salice Salentino, this is intended to be 100% Negromaro – although the vineyard is old and 5-10% of the vines planted years ago were probably Malvasia Nero.  Ripe fruit is picked in early September, rushed to the winery, and fermented cool in stainless steel.  Two years aging in one and two year-old small barrels rounds off the edges without adding oak flavors.

If you know Salice Salentino, you’ll recognize the aromas and flavors here.  The black color tells you this is a ripe, deep, wine, and the aromas of dark black plum and cherry, warm licorice root, savory spice, and purple flowers reinforce that impression.  In the mouth, the flavors are bold, warming and ripe – blackberry, black cherry, hot earth, roasted meat, spice and cocoa powder – with plenty of the meaty, earthy, complexity that Salice Salentino is known for.  But, it’s the purity, clarity, and wonderful freshness of flavor and texture that take this to another level.  Ripe, not roasted.  Powerful, not rustic.  Absolutely delicious with grilled sausages, roasted meats, or just nuts and olives, at a value price hard to resist.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010 Product #26966 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2010

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Here's a stunning value for anyone who loves Italian white wines - or just wants a juicy, crisp, and really tasting white wine at a great price.  The wine is made by Palazzone, the estate Steve Tanzer called, "“Unquestionably the number one small estate of Orvieto.”  Made from the younger vines that would otherwise goin into the estate's Orvieto, this is a beautiful, lively white from Umbria. Green apple, lime and watermelon flavours with a zesty mid palate. Great on its own, with salads or fish.

Volpetti Cesanese 2012 Volpetti Cesanese 2012

Even bigger, bolder, more fruit filled, and even more delicious than before (while still pretty garishly packaged).  From vineyards around Rome, the Volpetti packs a punch of lush dark damson plum and black cherry fruit with accents of earth and spice.  A short stay in old oak barrels softens the tannins and adds a hint of sweet balsamic.  Drink this a touch cool with pizza margherita, a bowl of pasta in red sauce, or even a big, juicy, burger and you'll be very, very, happy!

Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this:  “This is just stupid delicious.”  A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries.  In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak.  Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end.  Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill.  Like I said:  Stupid delicious.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2012 Product #27296 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2012 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2012

What a roll these guys are on!  The past two vintages of this gutsy Pinot Grigio earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, bragging rights as the best <$20 Grigio we know of, and our Chain Bridge Cellars Selection sticker.  The 2012?  Better than ever!

Once again, it's a Pinot Grigio for folks who like actual flavor in their crisp, refreshing, whites.  As in the past, lovely aromas and flavors of ripe pear, crisp apple, peach, and tangerine here with an extra layer of complexity from notes of melon, blanched almond, and a lovely floral element.  A tad richer and fuller than in the past, but just as mouthwatering and salty-mineral on the juicy, fresh, finish.  Just lovely, great value, stuff.

Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011 Product #27692 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011 Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011

This is the kind of wine that challenges preconceptions, especially if you think "foothills of the Dolomites" means "cool climate wines."  In fact, there's plenty of warmth in the region around Bolzano, which makes it possible to grow some pretty captivating Chardonnay - if you're careful.  The growers of Kelleri Kaltern plant the fruit for this wine on chalky gravel (Chardonnay loves chalk!) in windy crevices of the mountains.  The breeze keeps the fruit healthy and lets the fruit hang until late in the season, developing plenty of sugar and complex, ripe, flavors.  Whole cluster pressing, fermentation in steel, and aging about 30% in large casks preserves freshness and adds complexity.

The result is a ripe-smelling Chardonnay with generous tropical fruit framed with notes of vanilla, butter, and smoke.  Full and creamy on the palate where the fruit and hazelnut flavors coat your mouth, there's plenty of bright acidity to keep things fresh.  Tastes much more expensive than even the reasonable regular price!

Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 Product #28254 (In Stock)
Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 Fiore Rosso Toscana IGT 2012

Alessandro Fiore got started in the wine business promoting the wines of his father’s estates - Poggio Scalette in Chianti and Castelluccio le More in Emilia Romagna – in Europe and the USA.  So, when Alessandro decided to strike out on his own, it was natural that he turned to Vittorio Fiore for advice and winemaking help.  In 30+ years of consulting across Tuscany, Vittorio had identified a handful of small estates with exceptional quality fruit and wine, but limited marketing resources or skills.  With Vittorio finding and making the wines and Alessandro leading on marketing, Fiore Wine Collection was born.

There are several outstanding wines in this line-up, but tasting the Fiore Rosso IGT stopped us cold.  This “Super-Tuscan” is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown near the storied towers of Tuscany’s walled city of San Gimignano.  Fermented cool and aged all in tank, the wine opens with generous aromas of black cherry, red- and blackcurrant, and a touch of sweet spice.  In the mouth, it’s flat out exciting, with luscious dark berry and cherry fruit at the core of a lushly textured, velvety, mouthful of wine.  The richness and fruit carry on through the rich, plush, finish where velvet-clad tannins and tangy cherry acids provide support, keep the flavors fresh, and pull you back for another sip.  You can certainly drink this all by itself, but you’ll love it even  more with salami, grilled red and white meats, and even pizza!  A super value Super Tuscan steal!

Villa Jolanda Prosecco is made from 100% Prosecco grapes grown in the hills north of Treviso.  Grapes are hand-harvested, chilled in the vineyard, and given a low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruit.  The wine features lovely aromas of white flowers, orchard fruits, and a touch of mineral.  Lightly sparkling with very pretty, small, bubbles, the wine is full of flavor - peach, ripe apple, lemon zest, and a nice mineral streak.  Fruity and crisp, the wine finishes with a touch of mineral and yellow apple.  A fantastic wine to keep on hand for everyday celebrations or to stock up on for Holiday parties.  Delicious!

A delightfully aromatic wine, with loads of fresh fruit flavors bursting from the glass. It is sweet, but beautifully balanced by the wine's effervescence and acidity. Being frizzante, it has only about half the effervescence of a sparkling wine, and is hard to resist. This wine makes a wonderful accompaniment to many desserts, especially those made with fruit such as peach, pear, apple and berries.

Mevushal  Just a rock-solid take on one of Italy’s most versatile and fun to drink varietals.  The key themes here are “cherry” – ripe cherries on the nose, cherry confit flavors, even a dark black cherry color – and “spice”, a classic feature of Montepulciano grapes.  It’s medium-bodied, forward, and ready to drink now with lamb, brisket, and more.

Yup –pink Moscato.  The “rose Moscato” grape mutation originates in Sicily but has found a home in the warm nooks and crannies of Alto Adige’s mountains, too.  It's a true "labor of love" grape to grow - prone to disease and very low-yielding, it's hard to get enough crop to make any money off of it.  But, get this pink-berried grape ripe, give it a soak on the skins, and stop the fermentation early and you've got a cherry, strawberry, even grapy mouthful of fun.  A lovely wine to finish a fine meal - or enjoy at brunch with poppyseed strudel!
