Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this: “This is just stupid delicious.” A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries. In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak. Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end. Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill. Like I said: Stupid delicious.

The 2009 Volpetti Cesanese Lazio is bigger, bolder, more fruit filled, and even more delicious than the 2009 (while still pretty garishly packaged). From vineyards around Rome, the Volpetti packs a punch of lush dark damson plum and black cherry fruit with accents of earth and spice. A short stay in old oak barrels softens the tannins and adds a hint of sweet balsamic. Drink this a touch cool with pizza margherita, a bowl of pasta in red sauce, or even a big, juicy, burger and you'll be very, very, happy!

"Anarkos" refers to "Anarchy" - the natural state of Italy's deep South. A blend of Primitivo, Malvasia Nera and Negroamaro this is open, fruity, and just lightly earthy, avoiding the rusticity you find in this neighborhood. Juicy and rich with loads of pure berry fruit, this is fine to sip and even better with mushrooms or something touched with balsamic.

Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri and “Best Value of the Year”! The highest honor awarded by the Italian’s guide to Italian wine doesn’t often go to wines from Puligia, much less wines that sell for this price. From vineyards around the little Pulgia town of Salice Salentino, this is intended to be 100% Negromaro – although the vineyard is old and 5-10% of the vines planted years ago were probably Malvasia Nero. Ripe fruit is picked in early September, rushed to the winery, and fermented cool in stainless steel. Two years aging in one and two year-old small barrels rounds off the edges without adding oak flavors.
If you know Salice Salentino, you’ll recognize the aromas and flavors here. The black color tells you this is a ripe, deep, wine, and the aromas of dark black plum and cherry, warm licorice root, savory spice, and purple flowers reinforce that impression. In the mouth, the flavors are bold, warming and ripe – blackberry, black cherry, hot earth, roasted meat, spice and cocoa powder – with plenty of the meaty, earthy, complexity that Salice Salentino is known for. But, it’s the purity, clarity, and wonderful freshness of flavor and texture that take this to another level. Ripe, not roasted. Powerful, not rustic. Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

We (and many of you) loved the 2010 La Formica Soave for its marriage of rich texture and bright, refreshing, acids. The 2011 is at once richer than the 2010 – even more mouthfilling and round – and more fresh and vibrant. Once again, it’s 100% estate-grown Garganega, Soave’s best grape, hand harvested and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel (no oak to mask the flavors).
The color is classic Soave – golden yellow – as are the generous aromas of almonds, lemon zest, white flowers, apricot, and dash of fresh ginger. In the mouth, there’s the fantastic yin/yang of richness and zing that makes Soave so captivating. The texture is silky and round and coats your mouth completely, but the flavors are bright and fresh – Myer lemon, lime zest, tangy apricot, yellow apple and golden pear fruit with just a touch of honeysuckle and fresh almond. The citrusy acidity scrubs your palate clean as the boisterous fruit and honesuckle flavors go on and on. Villa Jolanda Prosecco is made from 100% Prosecco grapes grown in the hills north of Treviso. Grapes are hand-harvested, chilled in the vineyard, and given a low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruit. The wine features lovely aromas of white flowers, orchard fruits, and a touch of mineral. Lightly sparkling with very pretty, small, bubbles, the wine is full of flavor - peach, ripe apple, lemon zest, and a nice mineral streak. Fruity and crisp, the wine finishes with a touch of mineral and yellow apple. A fantastic wine to keep on hand for everyday celebrations or to stock up on for Holiday parties. Delicious!

A delightfully aromatic wine, with loads of fresh fruit flavors bursting from the glass. It is sweet, but beautifully balanced by the wine's effervescence and acidity. Being frizzante, it has only about half the effervescence of a sparkling wine, and is hard to resist. Always solid, this is the best vintage in a while for this Chianti producer located up near Florence. It's a round, black-fruited, wine loaded with soft black cherry and plum flavors and just the right touch of earthy spice. Soft and round from beginning to end, this is a great wine for burgers or just to sip on its own.

It's back - our favorite sparkling pink Nebbiolo from Italy. At first, a bizarre idea, but turns out deliciously here. The wine’s a pretty pale salmon pink color with brilliant highlights and zesty bubbles. The aromas suggest Nebbiolo – cherries, strawberries, red flowers, perhaps some tar. Then in them mouth there’s lots of bright berry fruit framed by notes of basil and mint. The ripe fruit builds towards the middle before everything finishes clean, crisp, and dry with lingering cherry/berry fruit and mouthwatering acidity. A really good sparkling rosé that’s fun to look at and a delight to drink.

Too new for a review, but one of the best Moscato d’Asti wines we’ve tasted this year. A small production, hand-crafted, Moscato from high-altitude vineyards and 15-20 year-old vines. Fermented naturally in small steel fermenters to retain it's natural frothy fizz, it's bursting with aromas and flavors of peach, pear and apricot. Wonderful acidity, nicely sweet, and low in alcohol - a great end to a fine meal or fun on its own anytime!

Fortunately, this wine with a mouthful of a name delivers a mouthful of delight! Aromas of purple flowers, crushed black cherry, smoke and leather lead to big flavors of black cherry and plum with accents of spice and licorice. Juicy up front, broad in the middle, and crisp and energetic at the end. A terrific blend of Sangiovese (85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) that’s both seductively rich and brightly refreshing. Not much you’re likely to put on your table that won’t play nicely with this terrific value.

Like most modern Valpolicella, Corvina makes up the backbone of this bright, fresh, wine with dashes of other traditional grapes – Rondinella and Oseleta – for spice. But, nearly 40% of the wine is Corvinone, a grape long thought to be just a clone of Corvina. Here, it adds a unique, captivating, herbal note that takes Corvina’s crunch red fruits to a whole new level!
After hand harvesting, all of the Valpolicella grapes are lightly air dried to concentrate their flavors, and then fermented and aged all in tank. On the nose, plenty of Valpolicella’s classic red fruit and floral aromas but with an extra kick of fresh herb and leafy tobacco. Bold, ripe, strawberry and sweet cherry fruit takes center stage in your mouth with notes of spice, garrigue, and pipe tobacco adding complexity and interest. The fruit flavors are fresh and crunchy but the texture round and easy to enjoy, with notes of tangy cherry, pomegranate and herb on the mouthwatering finish. Give it a chill and it will quench your thirst on a hot afternoon, but it will be even better with cured or grilled meats!
