Egret Pinot Noir California 2011 Egret Pinot Noir California 2011

Here's a very fine value in California Pinot Noir with excellent ripeness, balance (just 13.5% abv) and varietal character (i.e., it actually tastes like Pinot!).  Fruit from across the North Coast ferments cool and ages 10 months in mostly new oak.  Bright, ripe, black and Bing cherries take center stage with attractive accents of fresh earth, mushroom, and gentle oaky spice.  Soft and easygoing, it's a fine party or back porch Pinot that will work well with salmon, grilled pork, and mushroom-flavored dishes.

Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011 Product #28533 (In Stock)
Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011 Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011

When you're the son and assistant winemaker for Napa legend Ric Forman, you really ought to know a thing or two about making great Chardonnay.  And, when you're married to another third-generation grape grower, you really ought to be able to bring in excellent fruit, too.  So, the only thing really surprising about the outstanding Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay 2011 from Toby and Dawn Forman is the price - sure tastes like $40 Chardonnay, but carries a very attractive sub-$20 price tag!

Made from fruit grown and purchased from around the North Coast, this gets a touch of oak and about 30% goes through malolactic fermentation for a touch of buttery creaminess. The aromas and flavors feature plenty of ripe apple, pear, pineapple and citrus fruit with a nice dose of spice.  The texture is creamy and rich, but the bright acids keep things fresh and pure. A terrific wine, especially at this price!

A value line from Napa winery Joseph Carr, the 2012 Josh Cellars Chardonnay delivers plenty of bang for the buck. A blend of tank and barrel fermented fruit, you'll find lush peach, pear, citrus and tropical fruit in a creamy-textured wine supported by just enough citrusy acidity.  The wood is nicely balanced here, giving a touch of vanilla and smoke for complexity and depth.  Fine to sip, excellent with food.

Josh Cellars Merlot 2011 Josh Cellars Merlot 2011

From Joseph Carr, this great value Merlot delivers a lot more than it's modest price suggests. Classic Merlot aromas and flavors of soft red plum, blackcurrant, and a touch of dried herb get a little boost of oak spice and mellow chocolate.  Plenty of fruit in this balanced, easygoing, Merlot that finishes softly with lingering fruit and herb.

Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012 Product #28498 (In Stock)
Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012 Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012

Grayson purchases grapes from around California to make small "Lots" of very good value for money wines.  This Pinot Noir is an excellent example. Unlike most California Pinots, it's not overripe or heavy (just 13.1% abv), but there is plenty of juicy berry and cherry fruit with accents of pomegranate, cranberry, and smoky wood spice. Very light tannins and bright, refreshing, acids make this a great choice for drinking with a chill or pairing with a nice cool salmon salad.

From the winery: Beautifully balanced, with attractive aromas of black fruit and spice. Varner Chardonnay Foxglove 2011 Varner Chardonnay Foxglove 2011

The newest release of what Wine Advocate has called, "one of the top values in California wine" is another winner.  A blend of fruit from Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, and other sites with zero oak and no malolactic acidity, it delivers honeyed lemon, pear, and honeysuckle notes with a touch of fresh pineapple.  Zesty and clean on the end with fine purity and balance.  A winner!

"The 2011 Chardonnay is a beauty, as well as an absurd value. Very clean and lively, with classic Chardonnay notes of juiced apple, citrus and minerality, it is clean and focused on the palate with the richness of the variety, yet also beautiful precision and focus. Classy and well-made, without any apparent oak, it should be purchased by the case and consumed over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016."Wine Advocate 91 points

Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml Calera Pinot Noir Central Coast 2012 375ml

Calera's been on a roll for years now - with this wine hauling in 91-92 point ratings for five vintages in a row.  The 2012 could be their best ever from the limestone vineyards they work with across the Central Coast.  Deep, dark, aromas of berry, spice and violets lead to juicy black currant, plum, cherry and cola flavors with a hint of spice.  The spice and mineral elements gain strength on the soft finish with just a touch of oak at the end.  Outstanding Pinot and superb value.

Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Product #28495 (In Stock)
Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros 2012

We loved Michael Pozzan's 2007 Annabella Pinot Noir Carneros, but haven't been as enthused by subsequent releases - until now!  In what will go down as a great Pinot Noir vintage, this roars back into form with loads of black berry and dark strawberry fruit framed in rich, earthy, spice.  The texture is pure Carneros - nicely plush, but not heavy or over the top - and there's just enough oak for interest and clove spice without drying out the lush fruit.  A winning Pinot value.

Field Recordings Fiction Blanc 2011 Field Recordings Fiction Blanc 2011

Winemaker Andrew Jones spends most of his time planting and tending vineyards around California, which allows him to get access to small lots of fine fruit from around the state.  Field Recordings is the label he uses for these small lot, idiosyncratic, wines. His 2011 Field Recordings white is a blend of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat that is ripe, sweetly fruited, and surprisingly food friendly. Loads of peach, orange, melon, lemon peel, and honeysuckle here accented by a big bunch of fresh flowers.  Round and rich in the mouth but dry and bright on the crisp finish.  Fun stuff, and sure to please anyone who likes Conundrum (but wants to spend a little less!).

Vina Robles Red4 2010 Product #27534 (In Stock)
Vina Robles Red4 2010 Vina Robles Red4 2010

It’s not entirely clear how a couple of guys of Swiss heritage created one of Paso Robles’ most exciting young wine estates.  Swiss native Hans Nef spent a couple of years looking for vineyard in California before deciding to buy an scrubby property dotted with oak trees in the Central Coast’s Paso Robles region in 1996.  Fellow Swiss native Matthias Gubler joined in 1999 and made Vina Robles’s first vintage that year.

Nef and Gubler motto – “European Inspiration – California Character” describes their entry-level Red4 blend perfectly.  As in France’s Rhone Valley, the wine is a blend of distinctive grapes – Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Mourvedre – that complement one another beautifully.

"There’s a robust heartiness to this Rhône-style blend that makes it perfect for drinking on cold nights with spicy barbecue or stew. Mainly Syrah and Petite Sirah, it’s rich in blackberry, bacon and black pepper flavors. Bone dry and moderate in alcohol, it represents great quality for the price."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

A favorite from the past roars back into top form in the ripe, deep, 2012 vintage.  Big, rich, and lush with plenty of sweet pineapple and tropical fruit, a lash of butter, and bright green apple acids to hold everything in balance.

"So bright and zingy in acidity, and so ripe in tangerine, mango, lime fruit and honeysuckle, that you hardly notice the oak influence. Yet, it’s there in the form of buttered toast. The result is a big, powerful Chardonnay, clean and vibrant, for drinking now with dramatic shellfish and pork dishes."Wine Enthusiast 90 points
