- Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2013 Product #28636 (In Stock)
The Gmörk vineyard lies on loess and gravel soils in Austria’s excellent Wagram region. There’s plenty of sunny warmth in this South-facing site, so the fruit ripens beautifully. But the nearby Danube river channels cool air down from the Northwest, slowing the growing cycle and letting the grapes develop extra flavor and aroma while retaining fine freshness and acidity. Anton has all the grapes harvested by hand at the peak of ripeness, even taking on the extra cost of making multiple passes through the vineyard when necessary. It’s hard work and the kind of expense you rarely see in a Grüner intended to sell for under $20.
The 2013 Gmörk is the best release we’ve tasted so far (we’ve sold every vintage since 2008), delivering an extra notch of fresh fruit, a good helping of lime zest, and fine, bracing, minerality. While it was a touch fleshier and less vivicous than the 2013, the Washington Post’s three-star review of the 2009 seems spot on: “This delightful wine offers a fine example of what wine lovers call minerality: subtle flavors of lime zest with a hint of peach and nuances of talc and stone. It conjures an image of vine roots stretching through rocky soil, reaching for the essence of the earth. Three Stars.”
- Anton Bauer Riesling Berg 2013 Product #29056 (In Stock)
A great introduction to the joys (and stellar value) of Riesling from Austria. From a stony vineyard, this ultra pure and clean Riesling delivers intense aromas and flavors of ripe peach, lime zest, and fresh apricot with stony mineral notes and brisk, mouth-cleansing, acidity. A touch of spice on the juicy finish makes this a great choice for Thanksgiving - but once you've tried this bright but easy-drinking white, you'll find yourself reaching for it again and again.
