Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2013 Product #28005 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2013 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2013

Our first 2013 rose is a beauty!  As soon as you see the Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rosé, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, nicely round but still light and fresh.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Vllages 2012 Product #27886 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Vllages 2012 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Vllages 2012

Michel Chapoutier's genius shows through clearly in this wildly over-achieving red, a blend of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah from schist sites in rocky Roussillon.  The 2012 is a muscular, concentrated, wine that retains just the right amount of lift and freshness.  Deep aromas and flavors of red fruits - cherry, plum, and fresh raspberry tart - gain complexity from notes of smoky earth and bitter chocolate.  Rich, ripe, but perfectly balanced for table. Tangy blueberry/raspberry acidity adds freshness and makes this a great wine to pair with everything from pizza to most anything on the grill.

Ch Coupe Roses Minervois La Bastide 2012 Product #28223 (In Stock)

From some the highest-altitude vineyards in Minervois, this blend of Carignan and Grenache with 5% Syrah is a bright and mineral-laden beauty.  Aromas of tangy red fruit, ripe black raspberry, tapinade and garigue- lavender, thyme, rosemary and more - lead to similar flavors with a bigger dose of hot stone and wet slate minerality. Plenty of grip makes this a fantastic match for grilled lamb, pork or beef, especially with fatty cuts where the bright acidity and minerality will refresh your palate and hunger!

Dom La Tour Penedesses Faugeres 2009 Product #26900 (In Stock)
Dom La Tour Penedesses Faugeres 2009 Dom La Tour Penedesses Faugeres 2009

Just what red wine from Faugères (Languedoc-Roussillon) should be but almost never is.  A blend of Syrah, Grenache and 10% Mourvedre, this bursts with blackberry, black olive, floral and piney garrigue aromas.  In the mouth, round, almost creamy, and mineral with more blackberry/black raspberry fruit, dark earth, and a touch of wood spice flavors.  For all the fruit, this is savory, rather than sweet, and finishes firmly tannic and mineral with complex, lingering, flavors.  Outstanding with any herbed meat or bean dish now and the next few years.

Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009 Product #28104 (In Stock)
Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009 Ch De Casenove La Garrigue 2009

This is the kind of ripe, hearty, well-structured, red that the rocky vineyards of Rousillon should turn out by the truckload, but somehow rarely do.  Certainly, the grapes that thrive in this dry heat – Grenache, Syrah, and especially Carignon – are not easy to tame, especially in ill-kempt fields full of shaggy vines groaning under the weight of humongous crop loads.

Etienne Montes and his friend/consulting winemaker, the Rhone’s Jean-Luc Colombo, succeed by taking a different path.  Where others use carbonic maceration, new oak barrels, or other tricks to soften Rousillon’s rustic edges, Montes simply works day after day in the vineyards to grow perfectly ripe grapes.  As the harvest nears, he prowls his three plots – including the largest full of 50 year old vines and the next largest planted 70 years ago – tasting, tasting, and tasting grapes.  When he can feel the ripeness in his mouth, the softness of tannin, the maturity of minerality – that’s when Montes starts to make wine.

"Years ago I met Etienne Montes when he first began running his family’s vineyard holdings called La Casenove. Montes gave up a career as a photo journalist to guide this domaine into the upper-echelon of Roussillon producers. The stunning 2009 La Garrigue (40% Carignan, 40% Syrah and 20% Grenache aged 7 months in tank) is a terrific example of how much wine one can buy for under $20 a bottle. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by notes of cassis, blackberries, lavender, licorice, pepper and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and heady, this beauty is capable of drinking well for 5-6 more years. However, as with most of these wines, what’s the point of waiting?”Wine Advocate 92 points

Mas D' Alezon Faugeres Montfalette 2011 Product #26416 (In Stock)
Mas D' Alezon Faugeres Montfalette 2011 Mas D' Alezon Faugeres Montfalette 2011

Powerful and elegant, this old-vine Mourvedre shows that great wine can indeed come out of France's less-heralded regions.  The nose is powerfully fruity, with the scent of something leafy and herbal in the background.  The palate explodes with deep, ripe blackberry fruit supported by gravelly minerality.  We were shocked that all this could be packed into a wine that clocks in at only 12.5% ABV!

Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2011 Product #27055 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2011 Chapoutier Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2011

"Occultum Lapidem," Latin for "hidden stone", sums up what Michel Chapoutier is trying to capture at his superb Rouissilon estate - the hidden character and texture of the soil expressed in wine.  Made from Grenache, Carignan and Syrah grown biodynamically in stone and chalk soils, the super-ripe, hand-harvested, fruit here needs a year in large cask and small barrel to come into balance.  The result is a profound marriage of opulent richness, vivid energy, and stony, salty, minerality.  Give it a big swirl to reveal aromas of currant, blueberry, roasted meat, licorice, rosemary, and more.  At first rich, almost unctuous, on the palate it coats the mouth with black fruit, exotic spice, resinous herb, and mocha flavors that go on and on.  A whip of acidity and deep sense of stoniness hold everything in balance and a tangy, almost salty, brine-like, note emerges on the long finish.  Likely to improve and deliver even more pleasure mid-term, but no need to wait.  Grill some lamb or herb-rubbed pork or try an out-of-season cassoulet and drink this beauty right now.  Wine Advocate 94-96 points

Ch De Lascours Merlot Vdp d'Oc 2000 Product #27984 (In Stock)
Ch De Lascours Merlot Vdp d'Oc 2000 Ch De Lascours Merlot Vdp d'Oc 2000

Years ago, importer Olivier Daubresse teamed up with this small estate in Pic St. Loup for a special project - a Langeudoc Merlot aged in 100% new oak.  It was a majestic wine, but hard as nails, needing time.  Now, 13 years later, the results are very impressive as the mature wine gushes with dark red currant, black olive, earthy tobacco, and warm spice aromas and flavors. Firm, powerful, impressive.

Ch Puech Haut Prestige Rouge 2011 Product #28045 (In Stock)
Ch Puech Haut Prestige Rouge 2011 Ch Puech Haut Prestige Rouge 2011

We fell in love with the classy rose from this Languedoc producer last spring, and now we’re thrilled to bring you their Prestige red.  A blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 10% Carignan, this is an elegant, perfumed red.  The Syrah lends it notes of violets, and the tannins are assertive, but polished.  This would shine with lamb, olives, and all the usual Mediterranean suspects, but would be great with a rare seared duck breast, as well.

"A sensational offering from proprietor Gerard Bru, the 2011 Prestige is the estate’s least expensive wine. Readers may remember the fabulous review the 2010 Prestige received, and the 2011 is just as special. With Bru’s top Reserve wine selling for nearly $100 a bottle, the Prestige cuvee is an outstanding value. Interestingly, Bru has had three of the greatest winemaking consultants on Planet Earth working for him, first Michel Rolland, followed by Claude Gros and now Philippe Cambie. A blend of 60-75-year-old vine Grenache (55%) and 40-year old Syrah (45%), all grown on limestone soils dominated by the famous large rocks (galets roules) also found in parts of Chateauneuf du Pape. The wine is aged in concrete tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. Some of the vineyards are farmed organically and others biodynamically. The wine exhibits a tremendous perfume of sweet raspberries, spring flowers, forest floor, truffles and lavender as well as a beautiful texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning velvety tannins and purity, and a long finish. This is the 'real deal.' Drink it over the next 4-6 years." Wine Advocate 91 points

Department 66 (Dave Phinney) D66 Grenache 2010 Product #27855 (In Stock)
Department 66 (Dave Phinney) D66 Grenache 2010 Department 66 (Dave Phinney) D66 Grenache 2010

One of the reasons Dave chose to cash out of Orin Swift was to fund this project, a set of vineyards and new winery located in Maury, France, close to the Spanish border and nestled in the Pyrnes-Orientales. Dave now owns 235 acres of mostly 60+ year-old Grenache vines with a little Syrah and Carignan. With poor, rocky soils, these old vines struggle to produce low yields of super-ripe grapes – and Dave knows what to do with those!  Not a lot of finesse here, but plenty of powerful fruit and spice.

“A modern style, offering intense, powerful flavors of roasted plum, dark cherry and kirsch, with boysenberry. Asian spice, cream and dark chocolate accents that are very rich, leading to the long and muscular finish which exudes a concentrated spiciness. Drink now through 2020.”Wine Spectator 93 points
