Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Product #30665 (In Stock)
Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015

The 2015 growing season and harvest was monumental across most of Europe - and if you have doubts, just one big sniff and deep sip of this 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Carignan blend from the heart of the Southern Rhone will convince you.

Super deep aromas of roasted raspberries and cherries with earthy, chocolaty, undertones really burst from the glass. The palate is more like an old-school Chateuaneuf du Pape than Cotes du Rhone, with layers of rich raspberry, black plum and blackberry fruit accented by sweet and savory spice and a deep, rich, earthy/meaty depth. The tannins are fine-grained and sweet and the acidity shockingly fresh for such a ripe, rich, flavorful Rhone. It's a ton of wine for the money right now, but as it gains fleshy richness over the next few years, it will become about a fine a Rhone buy as we've ever seen. Do not miss.

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #30213 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

One of the Rhone's most consistent values, Segries Cotes du Rhone is a shining success in 2014.  Made from declassified Lirac grapes, it's a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% each Cinsault and Carignan done almost entirely in tank.  Aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2015 Product #30585 (In Stock)
Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2015 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2015

Domaine de la Bastide’s vineyards are near the village of Visan in the far northern reaches of the Cotes du Rhone appellation and within sight of the hills that define the eastern edge of the Rhone Valley.  While there’s still plenty of sunshine and mid-day heat here, the nights cool off more quickly than further south making the limestone soils exceptionally well suited to fresh, delicious, whites.

This is a blend of 60% Viognier, 10% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne, and 10% Bourboulenc, all planted by Vincent Boyer about 10 years ago and farmed organically.  The ripe fruit is harvested in the early morning cool and fermented and aged in cool stainless steel tanks for maximum freshness.  You’ll find generous aromas that center on mid-summer ripe yellow peach and fresh apricot with accents of white flowers and honeysuckle.  The wine feels rich and broad on the palate, but not at all heavy or thick, with lush peach and apricot fruit, more floral/honeysuckle, and a juicy dash of lime for freshness.  The limey acidity and a touch of dusty mineral lends freshness to the rich, long, finish and keeps you coming back for more.  A great companion for anything from chicken salad to fresh fish or just a sunny afternoon.

Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013 Product #30209 (In Stock)
Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013 Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013

Young Pablo Hocht learned to make wine as part of his day job at leading Gigondas estate Dom Saint Cosme, and is now venturing out on his own - but in a very small way.  He has just 5 acres of old vines - 60+ years for his Grenache - on the western side of the Ouveze River in Sablet.  Because he has only a few rows of Mourvedre, and AOC rules require Sablet to be at least 20% something other than Grenache (and Pablo prefers 40%), he uses the best Grenache for this wine and bottles the rest as Cotes du Rhone.

The 2012 edition of this wine earned 90 points from Wine Advocate, but the not-yet-reviewed 2013 is clearly better.  It’s a blend of 60% old-vine Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, all organic/biodamically farmed on the rock-covered sand and clay soils of Sablet, just under the hill of Gigondas.  The aromas here are just exactly why we love the big, gutsy, wines of the Southern Rhone.  Powerful scents of crushed black cherry, raspberry liquor, black licorice, olive, and a hint of lavender burst from the glass.  On the palate, the generous, rich, dark fruit flavors gain complexity from notes of fresh earth, warm stones, and dried thyme.  Mouthfilling and long on the palate, the finish remains surprisingly refreshing and bright as tangy raspberry, licorice, and herb flavors linger over mineral dust and fine-grained tannins.  Just 133 cases made (in Pablo’s parents’ basement), and delicious now for stews and autumnal feasts with at least 4-6 years of cellar potential, too.

Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012 Product #30369 (In Stock)
Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012 Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012

Damien Rozier crafts this robust, gutsy, red from about 80% Grenache and dollops of Syrah and Mourvedre grown on the hot, Mistral-swept, stretch of old Rhone riverbed called Plan de Dieu.  To the east, Gigondas and Vacqueyras perch along the hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail; to the south, the small hill holding “the Pope’s New Castle” rises and looks down on the sandier soils of Chateauneuf du Pape.  Here, though, the ancient Rhone River’s smoothed pebbles are salted through a hard, dense, clay that runs down 10 meters to rock (and water) below.

The 20-40 year-old vines have to work hard here, and so does Damien, farming without use of chemical herbicides or pesticides, working his vines by hand, and sorting out all but the most perfect fruit and aging his wine in French oak for a year.  It sure tastes like all that hard work was worth it!  The wine serves up big, boisterous, aromas of crushed blackberries, black cherry conserves, and super-ripe raspberry with earthy accents of black licorice, hot stone, spice and garrigue.  On the palate, the flavors stay dark, rich, and ripe but a big dose of fresh blackberry juice provides lift and a welcome jolt of tanginess.  The fine-grained tannins give this a just right amount of structure, enough to make this a fantastic match for burgers, pizza, or gilled lamb but not too much to interfere with happy solo sipping.  A straight-ahead, juicy, fun to drink, food-friendly, Cotes du Rhone at a fine, imported just for us, price.

From stone-covered soils in the Southern Rhone, this is a rich and fruit-filled blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Grenache, and 20% Carignan.  The aromas and flavors are on the darker end of the Rhone spectrum, with black cherry, blackcurrant, and, yes, some Mission fig at the core and nice accents of warm stone and spice.  Powerful, with plenty of dusty minerality and a touch of chewy tannin to the warming, figgy, finish.  Great will grilled or roasted meats or stews.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #29763 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  This is the second straight vintage Philippe made this wine as a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.

Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

Dom La Bouissiere Les Amis De La Bouissiere 2013 Product #30545 (In Stock)
Dom La Bouissiere Les Amis De La Bouissiere 2013 Dom La Bouissiere Les Amis De La Bouissiere 2013

From a top Gigondas estate owned by brothers Gilles and Thierry Faravel. The wine starts with Merlot and Caladoc (a rarely seen crossing) grown below Gigondas, close to the Rhone river.  Instead of just selling off these grapes, the Faravels decided to blend them with extra Gigondas barrels to make an easy drinking red to share with family and friends:  Les Amis.

You’ll love how the tangy black cherry, raspberry, and blackcurrant fruit unfolds across your palate and the way notes of sweet chocolate and savory herb weave in and out.  There’s fine purity here and a wonderful texture, rich and velvety on the midpalate and then silky and fine on the finish where notes of warm earth and fine-grained tannins linger nicely.  We won’t blame you if you find yourself gulping it down without much thought with pizza, burgers, grilled chicken, etc..  But it’s very long and fine and well worth paying attention to – kind of like a good friend.

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Garrigue 2013 Product #30122 (In Stock)
Dom Du Tix Ventoux Garrigue 2013 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Garrigue 2013

On the cool slopes of Mount Ventoux, Grenache ripens slowly in the warm heat of the Southern France sunshine but retains remarkable freshness from the cool air creeping down the mountainside every night.  You'll smell the southern Rhone's warm on the nose here, with big aromas of kirsch, baked raspberries, garrigue - thyme, lavender, and pine - and a touch of meaty richness from 10% Syrah in the blend.  On the palate the cool nights shine as the big, rich, flavors are enlivened by a sense of cool freshness.  Deep black raspberry, blueberry and baked strawberry fruit gain complexity from notes of cool stones and tangy blueberry. Finishes clean and fresh and long, with smooth tannins and a dusty minerality.  Drink it cool in a warm, sunny, spot or let it warm up to match with sausages, grilled meat, or stew.  Excellent value.

Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Les Muses 2012 Product #30211 (In Stock)
Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Les Muses 2012 Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Les Muses 2012

Where Cuvee Emile is chunky, rustic, fun, Cuvee Les Muses presents a more refined, elegant, style.  Emile is dressed in farmer’s overalls; for Les Muse, the farmer cleaned up and put on his sleek French designer suit!  Cedric culls the Syrah (two thirds) and Grenache (one-third) for this cuvee from slices of his vineyard where the vines grow on pure white clay.  As with Cuvee Emile, the wine is aged for about two years in cement before bottling and release – with just 150 cases made in 2012.

Syrah’s blueberry and black currant fruit shows on the elegant aromas and is joined by notes of pepper, spice, warm stone, and berry blossom on the pure, juicy, palate.  Where Emile softens with air, Les Muses reveals a firm, stony, core of sweet tannin and crushed rock minerality.  A delicious, complex, wine that will be stunning with roast lamb, pork roast or beef tenderloin.

"More Syrah dominated, the 2012 Vinsobres Les Muses is another fabulous wine from this estate. Aged 18 months in concrete tank, it exhibits lots of currants, blackberry, ground pepper and some leathery notes in a fruit forward, sexy, supple and pure style. As with the Emile release, it should be best over the coming 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2015 Product #30752 (In Stock)
Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2015 Dom De La Mordoree Tavel Rose La Dame Rousse 2015

As Robert Parker said, “If you haven't discovered, Mordorée continues to make some of the finest dry Rosés available anywhere in the world.”  And this, their flagship Tavel, is simply one of the finest pink wines you’ll be able to find anywhere this season.  The magic starts with 40 year-old plantings of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvedre - the black grapes for color - and 5% each of Clairette and Bourboulenc - the white grapes for vivacity and freshness.  After harvest, the grapes are crushed and allowed to soak in their juice for 3-4 days to extract flavor and aroma and also a rich, dark, salmon color.

Like any great Tavel, this is more deep, intense, and seriously red wine-like than most rosés you’ve experienced.  Big aromas of ripe strawberries, roses, orange blossom and creamy framboise jump from the glass.  On the palate, its rich, mouthfilling, and creamy in texture with intense berry and floral flavors lifted by a pop of bright acidity and chalky mineral on the long, dry, lipsmacking, finish.  A serious rosé for a contemplative glass of wine on the back deck while the sun sets, or to wow your guests at your next warm-weather dinner party. And don’t forget to put away a few bottles for the holidays, because this is the answer to the age-old question of what to serve at Thanksgiving this year or for 2 or 3 years to come!

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012

The past two vintages of this oak-aged powerhouse Syrah (92%) and Grenache (8%) blend earned 90 points from Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate.  The 2012 is better still.  It opens with simply gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch, smoke, and roasted meat - complex and seductive.  On the palate, Parker's description of the 2010 is spot on:  "It possesses unbelievable richness for a wine from this appellation, as well as loads of blackberries, black currants, acacia flowers, licorice and graphite."  One of the sexiest wines I've ever tried from Ventoux, but one that has sneaky structure and glorious freshness as well.  Ready and delicious right now and built to improve over the next 5-6 years.  A "wow" wine and stellar value.

Young Adrien Roustan makes this stunning Rhone red from 100% Grenache vines planted by his grandfather in the Vacqueyras Garrigue sub-district.  Having learned the value of including at least some stems while training at Domaine Romanee-Conti and California’s Turley Cellars, Adrien makes this with 100% whole cluster fruit fermented and raised in old-fashioned concrete tanks.  It what was a difficult vintage for many, his old vines gained full ripeness, giving this a glorious fleshy texture and big aromas and flavors of rich fruit, black olives, melted licorice, and Rhoney garrigue.  Great with lamb and stews now and able to go 5-8 years in cellar, too.  Highly recommended as a great, delicious, value.

“Opaque ruby. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit aromas hint at smoky minerals and licorice. On the palate, broad plum, blueberry and cassis flavors are accented by olive and cracked pepper. Finishes supple and long, with smooth tannins making a late appearance and folding nicely into the wine's plush fruit.”  Vinous (Reynolds) 89-91 points

"Medium-bodied, elegant and layered, with gorgeous aromatics of black raspberry, singed leather, chocolate and scorched earth, it has solid underlying tannin and a silky, polished feel that should allow it to drink nicely on release."Wine Advocate 90-92 points
