Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #30213 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

One of the Rhone's most consistent values, Segries Cotes du Rhone is a shining success in 2014.  Made from declassified Lirac grapes, it's a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% each Cinsault and Carignan done almost entirely in tank.  Aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and meaty notes of "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. The ripe fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

Pretty much the essence of Cotes du Rhone in this juicy, fresh, value.  About 50% Grenache with 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan, it serves up rich, lush, aromas of sweet raspberry and strawberry with plenty of garrigue – herb, lavender, and olive.  Plenty of sweet fruit and garrigue on the palate, too, with fine-grained tannins and lingering notes of raspberry and blackberry on the finish.  A gem!

Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012 Product #30369 (In Stock)
Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012 Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu 2012

Damien Rozier crafts this robust, gutsy, red from about 80% Grenache and dollops of Syrah and Mourvedre grown on the hot, Mistral-swept, stretch of old Rhone riverbed called Plan de Dieu.  To the east, Gigondas and Vacqueyras perch along the hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail; to the south, the small hill holding “the Pope’s New Castle” rises and looks down on the sandier soils of Chateauneuf du Pape.  Here, though, the ancient Rhone River’s smoothed pebbles are salted through a hard, dense, clay that runs down 10 meters to rock (and water) below.

The 20-40 year-old vines have to work hard here, and so does Damien, farming without use of chemical herbicides or pesticides, working his vines by hand, and sorting out all but the most perfect fruit and aging his wine in French oak for a year.  It sure tastes like all that hard work was worth it!  The wine serves up big, boisterous, aromas of crushed blackberries, black cherry conserves, and super-ripe raspberry with earthy accents of black licorice, hot stone, spice and garrigue.  On the palate, the flavors stay dark, rich, and ripe but a big dose of fresh blackberry juice provides lift and a welcome jolt of tanginess.  The fine-grained tannins give this a just right amount of structure, enough to make this a fantastic match for burgers, pizza, or gilled lamb but not too much to interfere with happy solo sipping.  A straight-ahead, juicy, fun to drink, food-friendly, Cotes du Rhone at a fine, imported just for us, price.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #29763 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  This is the second straight vintage Philippe made this wine as a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.

Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 2014 Product #30199 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 2014 Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 2014

Jean-Marie Royer, working with friend and consultant Philipe Cambie, makes what Vinous calls "elegant--dare I say Burgundian" Chateauneuf du Pape, wines of great perfume, grace, and elegance.  This is Royer's everyday wine, a blend of fruit from vineyards just outside of Chateauneuf and a site inside the Chateauneuf boundary that has a bit too much clay to qualify as Chateauneuf itself.  He should really be allowed to call this a Cotes du Rhone, but the rules say he must label it as "Vin de Table" and not make any note on where it's from or vintage (although, as you can see when you look at the label, he cheats a bit there).

In the 2014 vintage, this blend of tank-raised Grenache with Carignane, Syrah, and Alicante is utterly charming.  Definitely not as big and burley as the 2013 edition, this year's release is still very flavorful and aromatic and serves up plenty of dark berry, crushed herb, and spice.  As Wine Spectator said of the 2011, "It’s silky, with pretty pepper, red cherry and lavender notes and a lightly dusty finish, offering a textbook Provençal profile with a gentle, modest feel."  Outstanding value, but limited.

Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013 Product #30209 (In Stock)
Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013 Dom De Creve Coeur CdR Villages Sablet 2013

Young Pablo Hocht learned to make wine as part of his day job at leading Gigondas estate Dom Saint Cosme, and is now venturing out on his own - but in a very small way.  He has just 5 acres of old vines - 60+ years for his Grenache - on the western side of the Ouveze River in Sablet.  Because he has only a few rows of Mourvedre, and AOC rules require Sablet to be at least 20% something other than Grenache (and Pablo prefers 40%), he uses the best Grenache for this wine and bottles the rest as Cotes du Rhone.

The 2012 edition of this wine earned 90 points from Wine Advocate, but the not-yet-reviewed 2013 is clearly better.  It’s a blend of 60% old-vine Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, all organic/biodamically farmed on the rock-covered sand and clay soils of Sablet, just under the hill of Gigondas.  The aromas here are just exactly why we love the big, gutsy, wines of the Southern Rhone.  Powerful scents of crushed black cherry, raspberry liquor, black licorice, olive, and a hint of lavender burst from the glass.  On the palate, the generous, rich, dark fruit flavors gain complexity from notes of fresh earth, warm stones, and dried thyme.  Mouthfilling and long on the palate, the finish remains surprisingly refreshing and bright as tangy raspberry, licorice, and herb flavors linger over mineral dust and fine-grained tannins.  Just 133 cases made (in Pablo’s parents’ basement), and delicious now for stews and autumnal feasts with at least 4-6 years of cellar potential, too.

Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Emile 2012 Product #30210 (In Stock)
Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Emile 2012 Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Emile 2012

From organic/biodynamic grapes grown in the rock-covered vineyards of Vinsobres, about 20 miles north of Chateauneuf du Pape, this is deeply authentic, delicious, wine.  It’s about 75% Grenache plus 20% Syrah and dashes of Mourvedre and Carignan harvested by hand and aged almost two years in cement tank.

The Grenache core of this gutsy Rhone red is on full display from first sniff, with big aromas of roasted raspberry, black cherry, dark flowers, and more jumping from the glass.  On first opening the palate is full of peppery, chewy, verve and loads of dark raspberry/cherry fruit with accents of licorice and herb.  With air the flavors get bolder and more mouthcoating, with the rich black raspberry and blackberry fruit gaining accents of licorice, cola and earth.  A bold, rich, wine that will delight with most any food from kabobs to burgers, pizza, and more.

"A new estate for me, both of these Vinsobres were flat out gorgeous. Leading off, the 2012 Vinsobres Emile is loaded with character. Fruity, forward and medium to full-bodied, it gives up lots of black peppery, black cherry and crushed flowers as well as a seamless, sexy texture. I don’t think it will make old bones, so drink it over the coming 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013 Dom Grand Veneur Cotes Du Rhone Les Champauvins 2013

As Wine Advocate said in their barrel tasting note, this is "Tasting more like a Châteauneuf than a Côtes du Rhône" -  not surprising as the vineyard is just 3 meters over the CdP line!  A stunning value.

"The 2013 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins continues to impress, and for a difficult vintage, it has tons of charm. Offering lots of earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, underbrush and loam earth, it’s medium-bodied, nicely textured and has solid length. Made from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that had the Grenache aged in stainless steel and the Syrah and Mourvedre in barrel, drink it anytime over the coming 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 89 points

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Garrigue 2013 Product #30122 (In Stock)
Dom Du Tix Ventoux Garrigue 2013 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Garrigue 2013

On the cool slopes of Mount Ventoux, Grenache ripens slowly in the warm heat of the Southern France sunshine but retains remarkable freshness from the cool air creeping down the mountainside every night.  You'll smell the southern Rhone's warm on the nose here, with big aromas of kirsch, baked raspberries, garrigue - thyme, lavender, and pine - and a touch of meaty richness from 10% Syrah in the blend.  On the palate the cool nights shine as the big, rich, flavors are enlivened by a sense of cool freshness.  Deep black raspberry, blueberry and baked strawberry fruit gain complexity from notes of cool stones and tangy blueberry. Finishes clean and fresh and long, with smooth tannins and a dusty minerality.  Drink it cool in a warm, sunny, spot or let it warm up to match with sausages, grilled meat, or stew.  Excellent value.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!

Dom Grand Veneur Lirac Clos De Sixte 2012 Product #29713 (In Stock)
Dom Grand Veneur Lirac Clos De Sixte 2012 Dom Grand Veneur Lirac Clos De Sixte 2012

Until phylloxera arrived in 1863, Lirac was the most important and famous red wine region in all of the Southern Rhone – much more so than Chateauneuf du Pape across the Rhone River to the west.  Wines like this beauty from the Jaume family are helping to make the case for Lirac quality once gain.  As always, the quality starts in the vineyard with low yields, lots of handwork, and certified organic farming of vines growing amidst piles of the rounded Rhone river stones called galet.  The blend – 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre – and winemaking are almost identical to Grand Veneur’s highly rated Chateauneuf du Papes.  You’ll find loads of Chateauneuf character here - blackberry, raspberry, licorice, black olive, savory herb and more – and also a distinctly Lirac texture:  smooth, open, and almost silky.  A delicious deal.

"Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre. Racy, glossy fruit – really quite sophisticated with fine tannins on the end and better than many a Châteauneuf. Concentrated, sweet and rich and actually quite like a Châteauneuf!"  Jancis Robinson 17/20 points

"Grand Veneur 2012 Lirac Clos de Sixte is comprised of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre that’s aged 16 months in 30% small barrels. It exhibits ripe, voluptuous notes of blackberry, licorice, underbrush and hints of minerality in a full-bodied, rich and textured profile. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years. Drink now-2022."Wine Advocate 90-92 points

Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Les Muses 2012 Product #30211 (In Stock)
Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Les Muses 2012 Dom La Pequelette Vinsobres Cuvee Les Muses 2012

Where Cuvee Emile is chunky, rustic, fun, Cuvee Les Muses presents a more refined, elegant, style.  Emile is dressed in farmer’s overalls; for Les Muse, the farmer cleaned up and put on his sleek French designer suit!  Cedric culls the Syrah (two thirds) and Grenache (one-third) for this cuvee from slices of his vineyard where the vines grow on pure white clay.  As with Cuvee Emile, the wine is aged for about two years in cement before bottling and release – with just 150 cases made in 2012.

Syrah’s blueberry and black currant fruit shows on the elegant aromas and is joined by notes of pepper, spice, warm stone, and berry blossom on the pure, juicy, palate.  Where Emile softens with air, Les Muses reveals a firm, stony, core of sweet tannin and crushed rock minerality.  A delicious, complex, wine that will be stunning with roast lamb, pork roast or beef tenderloin.

"More Syrah dominated, the 2012 Vinsobres Les Muses is another fabulous wine from this estate. Aged 18 months in concrete tank, it exhibits lots of currants, blackberry, ground pepper and some leathery notes in a fruit forward, sexy, supple and pure style. As with the Emile release, it should be best over the coming 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011 Product #29514 (In Stock)
Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011 Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011

This is old-school Gigondas from 50 year-old (average) Grenache (80%), Mourvedre (15%) and Syrah (5%) grown on classic Gigondas soils – a mixed salad of marly-calcareous soils, sandy clay sub-soils, and scattered scree washed down from the limestone outcroppings further up the hill.  The Grenache and Syrah were fermented and aged in vat and the Mourvedre in old oak casks.

The result – a very fine, classically, styled Gigondas that you can drink right now or cellar for 4-6 years if you like.  Big, bold, aromas of roasted strawberry, macerated raspberry, and dark black cherry fruit with a touch of garrigue – black olive tapenade, sappy herb, and lavender – that gets bolder and richer with air.  It’s a big, mouthfilling wine – we are in the Rhone, after all – that pumps out rich flavors of dark red berry and cherry and plenty of garrigue.  A stony, almost salty, mineral streak that just screams “Gigondas” runs right down the middle of the palate and sails on through the long, finely tannic, finish.  The combination of richness and freshness are just lovely, and I suspect (like me) you’ll find the bottle empty all too soon.

The past two vintages of this oak-aged powerhouse Syrah (92%) and Grenache (8%) blend earned 90 points from Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate.  The 2012 is better still.  It opens with simply gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch, smoke, and roasted meat - complex and seductive.  On the palate, Parker's description of the 2010 is spot on:  "It possesses unbelievable richness for a wine from this appellation, as well as loads of blackberries, black currants, acacia flowers, licorice and graphite."  One of the sexiest wines I've ever tried from Ventoux, but one that has sneaky structure and glorious freshness as well.  Ready and delicious right now and built to improve over the next 5-6 years.  A "wow" wine and stellar value.
