Pares Balta Mas Petit Penedes 2013 Product #30602 (In Stock)
Pares Balta Mas Petit Penedes 2013 Pares Balta Mas Petit Penedes 2013

From Spain's Penedes region, this is a great everyday red made from organicly grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha grapes.  Fermented in tank and aged 7 months in used French Oak.  It's more like a Loire Valley Chinon than most Spanish wines, with plump currant and red cherry fruit and accents of crushed herb, smoke and spice.  Rich enough for something off the grill, but also fun by itself with a light chill - a Spanish bistro red!

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Product #30795 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A tad more rich and round in the warm 2015 harvest, but still a refreshingly great value!

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro K Rosso Alto Adige 2014 Product #30464 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro K Rosso Alto Adige 2014 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro K Rosso Alto Adige 2014

We confess to being huge fans of Kellerei Kaltern, the outstanding cooperative winery perched in the foothills of the Dolomites just outside Balzano, Italy.  The Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco from the hills sloping down to Lake Kaltern are mainstays here, but it's the lake-side reds that are most special to us.

Both the very popular Schiava and gutsier Lagrein bottlings rely on older vines, so the winery created this blend to feature younger vines (up to 30 years) of both.  The light-colored Schiava give this wonderful aromas and flavors of cherry, lilac, and rose petal while the more powerful Lagrein adds black raspberry, plum, and licorice notes.  Light - just 12.5% abv - but packs a big flavor punch.  Try it cool with a spread of cheese and cured meat and we think you'll be convinced!

Anton Bauer Zweigelt Wagram 2013 Product #30824 (In Stock)

A great version of Austria's own Zweigelt grape that shows like a cross between juicy Gamay and hearty Cotes du Rhone - making it a great food and fun selection.  Loads of juicy cherry and dark berry fruit with accents of fresh earth, spice, lavender, and fragrant flowers.  Mid-weight on the palate and very fresh and clean on the finish, it's more than bold enough to handle big flavors at table but refreshing and fun enough to just sip all by itself.  A delicious value.

"Here, Here, Here!" chalked the monk charged with finding taverns for the bishop to visit after tasting this Umbrian classic.  A blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia and Roscetto, Falesco's version is lemony and fresh with pretty accents of lemon rind and fennel frond.  Finishes clean and citrusy with a hint of herb. Great seafood, sausage or sipping white.

De Angelis Falerio DOC Bianco 2014 Product #30196 (In Stock)
De Angelis Falerio DOC Bianco 2014 De Angelis Falerio DOC Bianco 2014

Best vintage yet for this fresh, fruit-filled, Italian white. The Falerio DOC sits at the southern end of Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast just East of Umbria.  The relatively new DOC was created in 1975 to promote the region's two best white wine grapes-Passerina and Pecorino-while continuing to allow use of the ubiquitous Trebbiano.

Great aromas of pear, peach, and lime with a salty scent of the sea in the background.    On the palate, there's loads of ripe, creamy peach, apple, pear and nectarine fruit with a spritz of key lime juice and seltzer followed by a chalky, salty, mineral-driven, finish.  There's a lot of creamy richness here that will please fans of unoaked Chardonnays, but the zesty acidity and mineral element make this super fresh and mouthwatering.  Brilliant with a garlicky scampi and seafood but pretty darn fun to just drink at a party or with friends over antipasti.  Fantastic value.

Even bigger, bolder, more fruit filled, and even more delicious than before (while still pretty garishly packaged).  From vineyards around Rome, the Volpetti packs a punch of lush dark damson plum and black cherry fruit with accents of earth and spice.  A short stay in old oak barrels softens the tannins and adds a hint of sweet balsamic.  Drink this a touch cool with pizza margherita, a bowl of pasta in red sauce, or even a big, juicy, burger and you'll be very, very, happy!

Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Blanc Samorens 2014 Product #30460 (In Stock)
Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Blanc Samorens 2014 Ferraton Cotes Du Rhone Blanc Samorens 2014

Here's a delicious white Rhone from biodynamic producer Ferraton Pere et Fils.  It's a blend of about equal parts Grenach Blanc and Clairette, picked ripe and made all in stainless steel tank.  It's all about aromas and flavors of peach, white flowers, and lime with a dusting of white pepper and crushed bitter mineral providing support on the mouthwtering finish.  Lovely to sip and will sing with fish or salads.

"The medium-bodied, clean, crisp and balanced 2014 Côtes du Rhône Samorens Blanc offers plenty of citrus, white flowers and minerality on the nose. Made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette brought up all in stainless steel, it’s a rock solid white that’s ideal for starting a meal with over the coming 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2014 Product #30470 (In Stock)
Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2014 Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2014

Better known under it's Rioja name of Viura, Macabeo flies under the radar as a main or blending grape in white Rioja, Cava, and other regional wines.  British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson has dubbed it "the Cinderella grape" in recognition of the way Macabeo is coming out of the shadows now and being allowed to shine on it's own.

This is a fine example from 35 year-old vines in Calatayud, not far from Rioja. You'll find Macabeo's signature notes of peach, orange, and almond here lifted by a note of juicy lemon.  Rich and creamy on the palate with good weight and a nice, refreshing, dusty minerality on the generous finish.  This will be especially delicious with fresh water fish done with butter and nuts or even with richer dishes like salmon.

Ijalba Rioja Viura Genoli Blanco 2014 Ijalba Rioja Viura Genoli Blanco 2014

A great example of how refreshing and fun white Rioja can be when it's not too ripe or over-oaked.  Here 100% Viura sees no oak at all, and that lets the crisp, ripe, pear, apple, and stone fruit flavors shine through. The fruit pumps on through the generous finish where a touch of dusty stone adds interest. Try it with seafood, salads, or just warm afternoons!

Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Product #30699 (In Stock)
Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Odoardi Savuto Red 2013

A paradox - how can such a fresh, vibrant, red come from the brutally hot Southern Italian DOC of Savuto in Calabria?  Elevation (Odoardi's vineyards are at up to 2,000 feet) helps, as does a big dose (45%) of Gaglioppo, the soft and bright grape called Arvino locally.  Gaglioppo gives this bright cherry/berry fruit and a soft, round, juicy mid-palate while Aglianico (25%) adds structure and Magliocco Caniino, Greco Nero, and Nerello Cappuccino perfume and complexity.  A great pizza, sausage, pasta, grilled food red, especially with a chill.

Dom De Viranel Trilogie Vdp Cessenon Rouge 2014 Product #30755 (In Stock)
Dom De Viranel Trilogie Vdp Cessenon Rouge 2014 Dom De Viranel Trilogie Vdp Cessenon Rouge 2014

The Viranel family has made wine on the stony soils of Saint-Chinian, in the very heart of the Languedoc's sunny, hot, dry vineyard, since 1551.  Today a new generation is making wines with traditional Languedoc warmth and richness and just a touch of modern innovation.  Here, brothers Amaud and Nicolas combine Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and the much maligned Alicante Bouschet to make a fresh, fun, south of France treat!

Cabernet and Syrah are found across Languedoc and rate as "improving" varieties, while Alicante thought of as the grape that needs improving!  It's a red-fleshed berry that gives lots of color and first became popular as a way to darken over-cropped Grenache/Carignan blends.  But from old vines (these were planted in 1939) and at low yields, it adds a burst of tobacco-like complexity to the big, lush, red and black fruit aromas and flavors here.  Juicy and a touch decadent (in a good way!), this no-oak red will shine with anything off the grill (although the winery's suggestion of rabbit with turnip or pigeon with raisins sounds good, too!).

Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2012 Product #30396 (In Stock)
Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2012 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2012

If you know Negromaro from Salice Salentino, you’ll recognize the aromas and flavors here.  The dark color tells you this is a ripe, deep, wine, and the aromas of dark black plum and cherry, warm licorice root, savory spice, and purple flowers reinforce that impression.  In the mouth, the flavors are bold, warming and ripe – blackberry, black cherry, hot earth, roasted meat, spice and cocoa powder – with plenty of the meaty, earthy, complexity that Salice Salentino is known for.  But, it’s the purity, clarity, and wonderful freshness of flavor and texture that take this to another level.  Ripe, not roasted.  Powerful, not rustic.  Absolutely delicious with grilled sausages, roasted meats, or just nuts and olives, at a value price hard to resist.

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2015 Product #30585 (In Stock)
Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2015 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2015

Domaine de la Bastide’s vineyards are near the village of Visan in the far northern reaches of the Cotes du Rhone appellation and within sight of the hills that define the eastern edge of the Rhone Valley.  While there’s still plenty of sunshine and mid-day heat here, the nights cool off more quickly than further south making the limestone soils exceptionally well suited to fresh, delicious, whites.

This is a blend of 60% Viognier, 10% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne, and 10% Bourboulenc, all planted by Vincent Boyer about 10 years ago and farmed organically.  The ripe fruit is harvested in the early morning cool and fermented and aged in cool stainless steel tanks for maximum freshness.  You’ll find generous aromas that center on mid-summer ripe yellow peach and fresh apricot with accents of white flowers and honeysuckle.  The wine feels rich and broad on the palate, but not at all heavy or thick, with lush peach and apricot fruit, more floral/honeysuckle, and a juicy dash of lime for freshness.  The limey acidity and a touch of dusty mineral lends freshness to the rich, long, finish and keeps you coming back for more.  A great companion for anything from chicken salad to fresh fish or just a sunny afternoon.
