Santa Barbara's entry-level Verdicchio has been a favorite at the store for years. For the second year in a row, this vintage sees a bit of a step up from what was already a rock-solid white. You'll find a lovely melange of dried lemon, pink grapefruit, mineral and a touch of dried herb here in a fairly full-bodied take on Verdicchio. It's at once round/fruity and juicy/crisp.

Vermouth is an aromatic wine, made from a neutral, dry white basic wine which is then blended with an infusion. The infusion, which gives each vermouth its unique and distinctive character, is created by flavoring the basic wine with a special selection of herbs, flowers, fruit peels, seeds, plants and other botanicals. The addition of brandy fortifies the vermouth to 18% alcohol by volume. The prized and closely guarded recipe is used to make Boissiere has not changed since 1854.
Infused with select botanicals such as elderflower, chamomile and coriander, Boissiere is recognized for its floral and herbal aromas and refined palate. Add ice and drink it "neat" or mix it in to make the perfect martini!

Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri and “Best Value of the Year”! The highest honor awarded by the Italian’s guide to Italian wine doesn’t often go to wines from Puligia, much less wines that sell for this price. From vineyards around the little Pulgia town of Salice Salentino, this is intended to be 100% Negromaro – although the vineyard is old and 5-10% of the vines planted years ago were probably Malvasia Nero. Ripe fruit is picked in early September, rushed to the winery, and fermented cool in stainless steel. Two years aging in one and two year-old small barrels rounds off the edges without adding oak flavors.
If you know Salice Salentino, you’ll recognize the aromas and flavors here. The black color tells you this is a ripe, deep, wine, and the aromas of dark black plum and cherry, warm licorice root, savory spice, and purple flowers reinforce that impression. In the mouth, the flavors are bold, warming and ripe – blackberry, black cherry, hot earth, roasted meat, spice and cocoa powder – with plenty of the meaty, earthy, complexity that Salice Salentino is known for. But, it’s the purity, clarity, and wonderful freshness of flavor and texture that take this to another level. Ripe, not roasted. Powerful, not rustic. Villa Jolanda Prosecco is made from 100% Prosecco grapes grown in the hills north of Treviso. Grapes are hand-harvested, chilled in the vineyard, and given a low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruit. The wine features lovely aromas of white flowers, orchard fruits, and a touch of mineral. Lightly sparkling with very pretty, small, bubbles, the wine is full of flavor - peach, ripe apple, lemon zest, and a nice mineral streak. Ruche is a grape that has a long tradition in the Piemonte region of Italy. Though many people outside the area have probably never heard of it, it is as traditional as they come. Grown at fairly high elevations and in limestone soil, the finicky Ruche grape produces a wine soft, yet complex. Aromas of spiced cherry and florals fill the glass. On the palate, the wine has wonderful flavors of peppered dark cherries and soft plums. A delicious wine to have to with roasted pork tenderloin and even Asian dishes.

So, you see “Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2006” and you think, “Well, that’s got to be over the hill!” Think again, because Philippe Plantevin’s 2006 blanc is just getting started and will put many CdP Blanc’s (at 3x the price) to shame! A blend of 40% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc, and 30% Marsanne, the 2006 CdR Blanc has moved past its primary, fruity, youth and emerged as something very special indeed. The aromas are rich, deep, and wildly complex. The main note is beeswax, but beeswax from a hive that feeds on lavender and thyme, along with fresh figs just picked on a hot summer day and dried orange peel. I realize this is getting pretty out there, but the aromas are exotic, wild, and compelling.
In the mouth, big flavors and even bigger acidity. Dried honey, orange peel, peach skin and even a touch of Earl Grey tea swirl around the entry and midpalate before fantastic acidty wells up and scrapes your tounge clean. The finish is long and brings more exotic fruit along with a pretty vanilla note that lingers nicely. At once cream and super vibrant, and sure to be amazing with everything from cod or halibut in a cream sauce to ripe cheeses.
