Drei Dona Le Vigne Nuove Sangiovese Emilia Romagna 2012 Product #30483 (In Stock)
Drei Dona Le Vigne Nuove Sangiovese Emilia Romagna 2012 Drei Dona Le Vigne Nuove Sangiovese Emilia Romagna 2012

Tuscan Sangiovese gets all the glory, but Italy's most important black grape shines almost anywhere in Italy where warm sunshine is balanced by cool nights and were sandy clay soils balance water availability with good drainage.  Sangiovese has thrived in Emilia-Romagna, just north of Tuscany, for centeruies and on the Drei Dona farm in for a couple hundred years, at least.

This bottling, from the estate's younger vines and more forward barrels, is a fine choice for casual sipping and dining, especially with rich pastas or savory pizza.  You'll find generous dollops of Sangiovese's typical bright cherry fruit on the nose and palate, plus a nice dose of meaty, leathering, complexity and hints of licorice and violets from 15% other local grapes.  It turns a bit meatier and richer with air, but juicy acids and dusty tannins keep this fresh and fun from first sip to last.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Product #30794 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Tenuta di Capraia Chianti Classico 2011 Product #29840 (In Stock)
Tenuta di Capraia Chianti Classico 2011 Tenuta di Capraia Chianti Classico 2011

Capraia's legacy dates from at least the year 998, when the property was donated to the Abbey of San Michele.  The vineyards lie in the most "Classico" portion of Chianti Classico:  the famed Conca d’Oro ("Golden Bowl"), the amphitheater-like hill in the center of Castellina in Chianti.  Here, the estate farms Sangiovese (90% of the blend) for plenty of bright cherry, rose petal, and bitter almond Chianti character plus small plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (5% each) to add complexity and smoothness of texture.  A full year's aging in a mixture of large and small barrels (all used), smooths out the wine's texture and adds a touch of spice without any overt woodiness.

The result is a Chianti Classico that smells, tastes, and finishes like a much more expensive wine, with loads of juicy ripe dark cherry and red berry fruit, floral and spice accents, and a firm, food-friendly, finish.  Delicious right now and sure to keep improving for 3-4 years.

"Tenuta di Capraia's 2011 Chianti Classico is sexy and voluptuous from start to finish. Juicy red berries, rose petals, anise and spices all flow from this effortless, totally gracious Chianti Classico. Soft and perfumed throughout, the 2011 is drinking beautifully today. I would prefer to enjoy the wine in its youth, but it also has more than enough fruit to develop nicely in bottle for a number of years. This is a winner." Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 90 points

"Rich and vibrant, with earthy undertones supporting the cherry and cranberry flavors. Firm and juicy, presenting a long, almond- and mineral-tinged aftertaste."Wine Spectator 90 points

Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2014 Product #30149 (In Stock)
Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2014 Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2014

Here’s proof that great farming and straight-ahead winemaking can deliver fine Chianti – and even finer value! – from outside the Classico zone.  More and more Chianti is either all Sangiovese or Sangiovese strengthened with dollops of Cabernet or Syrah.  Here, a family dedicated to natural, organic, farming turns back to Tuscan tradition to make Chianti from an old-school blend of grapes:  Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.  Sangiovese gives the wine heft and structure, while Canaiolo adds volume, Colorino deepens the color, and Ciliegiolo – Sangiovese’s genetic parent – soft red cherry fruit.

All of this comes together to deliver a ripe, zesty, Chianti that’s very easy to drink.  Ripe black and red cherry fruit forms the wine’s core and gains interest and complexity from accents of crushed violets, red licorice, rich earth, and sweet spice accents.  There’s no oak influence at all, allowing ripe fruit to shine through while retaining outstanding freshness and just the right touch of structure at the end.  A fine party Chianti, for sure, and one that will be as much fun to drink with a big bowl of pasta as with burgers or rosemary-scented pork.

Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo 2013 Product #30397 (In Stock)
Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo 2013 Gagliole Chianti Classico Rubiolo 2013

We’ll call this “modern” Chianti Classico, in the sense that Sangiovese’s hard edges have been filed down to silky smoothness and that the sweet cherry fruit is allowed to sing through without being overwhelmed by earthy, leathery, notes (which were always more about poor cellar conditions more than Sangiovese itself).  But, it’s certainly “traditional” in the sense that there’s a solid base of tannin for support and that you’ll taste Chianti – both the place and its Sangiovese grape – rather than oak.  Mainly, though, we’ll call this “fun” – because that’s the best word to describe the pleasure you’ll get from drinking this lovely wine now – 2020 or so.

"The 2013 Chianti Classico Rubiolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Gagliole. Soft, fleshy and expressive, the 2013 hits all the right notes, with vibrant red cherry fruit and fabulous balance. Silky tannins add to an impression of finesse, while attractive floral and spiced notes give the wine an attractive upper register."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points

"A red with raspberry, black pepper and lemon rind character. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Beautiful density of fruit here. Best Rubiolo ever."  James Suckling 92 points

"The 2013 Chianti Classico Rubiolo offers a pure core of bright cherry fruit with cherry liqueur and candied cherry for added intensity. Besides that very obvious cherry theme, the bouquet makes room for added spice, leather and polished mineral. Rubiolo offers a very elegant and clean presentation for those who enjoy the bright flavors and crisp nuances of Chianti Classico."Wine Advocate 91 points

Kati Pettrone and Skip Bailey Lovin partner with Kati’s East Coast brothers, Mark and McLean's own Frank Pettrone to bring us this homage to the wine their Italian parents drank.  A richer, riper, and more fun take on Chianti's main red grape, this shows soft cherry and raspberry fruit with hints of cracked epper and olive.  Hefty enough for big roasts or stews but not at all harsh or hard.

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2012 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2012

An old-school Chianti from the Castellina-in-Chianti sub zone of the appellation.  Deep aromas of scorched earth, cherry and spice lead to a plump mouthful of juicy cherry, red berry, earth, leather and more spice. Finishes clean and fresh with juicy acids and light tannins. The sweet, ripe, fruit at the core makes this fun to drink but there's more than enough going on here to shine with savory foods like hamburger, pork, or lamb.

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2014 Product #30552 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2014 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2014

A delightful contrast to the more serious, brooding Brunello from Voliero, the 2014 Rosso is fresh, pure and clean - unadulturated, un-fussed-with Sangiovese. It opens with aromas of fresh cherries, cranberries, and a bit of baking spice. While this wine does see 10 months of aging in large Slavonian and French oak casks, the wood adds just a touch of pleasing spiciness, and mainly serves as a way to soften and open the wine.

On the palate, it’s silky and light on its feet, and the tannins have a very satisfying, supple texture. Flavors of fresh cherries, just-ripe strawberries, and a hint of cranberry make this wine mouthwatering and food friendly, but you could also chill the bottle down just a bit and have a few sips while you’re cooking or before dinner with no trouble at all. While the description of Rosso di Montalcino as a ‘Baby Brunello’ is usually an apt one, it’s limiting to think of this style of wine as a lesser version of Brunello. It has its own perfect situation, usually one where a richer, oak-aged wine would be overwhelming. Try it with roast chicken, grilled pork, or even a simple vegetable and pasta dish.
