A straight-ahead, lightly oaked, Tempranillo with good richness, plenty of fruit and spice, and enough acidity to stay fresh.  Nice value.

Lush and open-knit, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and boysenberry flavors accented by a hint of cracked pepper. Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2005 Product #28490 (In Stock)
Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2005 Lopez De Haro Rioja Reserva 2005

Huge savings on delicious, highly-rated, fully mature, Rioja Reserva – not much more that needs to be said!  The style here is what I might call “restrained modern.”  Great care has been taken to preserve ripe fruit flavors (and, for a 9 year-old wine, there’s a LOT of fruit here) and a deft use of French and American oak imparts classic Rioja earth, smoke and spice notes without overwhelming the wine.  The combination of oodles of dark fruit and traditional Rioja funk reminds us of long-time favorite Muga.  Drink it now for the fruit or cellar it for years if you enjoy the lighter, tea and chamomile tang of more traditional Rioja.

“These are excellent wines brimming with personality and well-judged, prudent winemaking. The 2005 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Garnacha aged for 20 months in French and American oak. It has a beautiful, rounded, sensual bouquet with hints of over-ripe Satsuma and gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of piquancy on the entry. It has crisp acidity and taut tannins on the dry, dusky finish but it remains extremely well-focused. Drink now-2025.”Wine Advocate 92 points

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Ona 2011 Product #27980 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Ona 2011 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Ona 2011

Start with "young" (20-30 years) Tempranillo vines growing naturally in rocky vineyards in Rioja Alavesa.  Hand harvest the grapes and place them in a tank - uncrushed and still on the stems - and then blanket them with CO2.  So far, you have the makings of Bodegas Laukote Tempranillo Tinto, a long-time favorite here.  But, once the fermentation starts, winemaker Norberto Miguel puts on a breathing mask and air tank...and jumps down into the grapes!  He steps gently to break grape skins and extract color without crushing seeds or breaking stems that might add bitter tannin.  Then, as fermentation continues, he gives the wine gentle pump-overs to get more color, richness and depth still.

If you enjoy the sold-out Tempranillo Tinto, you'll love Ona de Laukote, a darker, richer, and more deeply flavored version of Rioja Tempranillo. Black cherry, plum, and blackberry fruit get complexity from notes of fresh earth, smoke and spice - all from the soil, because there's no oak on this wine at all!  Juicy and soft enough to just sip, rich and deep enough to enjoy with a steak.  Delicious and great value.

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Borg 2012 Product #28428 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Borg 2012 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Tempranillo Borg 2012

The last vintage of this beauty was called "Ona", but Norberto Miguel had to change the name to Borg this release.  It's still one of the most versatile, juicy, and absolutely delicious Tempranillo wines in the store.  The 2012 is even more juicy and refreshing than the 2011.  Loads of fresh cherry, red plum and blackberry fruit with accents of wood smoke, spice, and earth - all from the soil, because there's no oak on this wine at all!  The fine tannins give it enough support for food, but you can chill it and sip it solo, too!

Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Crianza 2010 Product #28587 (In Stock)
Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Crianza 2010 Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Crianza 2010

When you taste this 2010 Crianza, you’ll immediately understand why we’re so excited about Bodegas Luis Canas.  It’s 95% ripe, plump, and plummy Tempranillo enhanced with 5% tangy, spicy, structured Graciano and aged for 12 months in used  French and American oak cask.  The aromas are seductive – spicy cranberry, candied cherry, sweet vanilla and a touch of rose petal capture your attention.  The texture is so smooth, silky, and lovely that it takes a moment to notice how the red berry and spice flavors fill your mouth and coat your palate.  But, you’ll definitely notice how this wine finishes as it pumps out loads of tangy ripe red and black fruit over silky smooth tannins and then leaves raspberry, spice and fruit blossom flavors lingering behind.  Lovely stuff.

“The 2010 Crianza is a very pleasant wine, starting with a beautiful ruby color and a clean, intense nose of wild berries with just enough lactic and spicy notes. The palate shows sweet tannins and good balance, intense and fresh. This is a crowd-pleaser and great value.”Wine Advocate 91 points

Romanico Tinto De Toro (Tempranillo) 2011 Product #28044 (In Stock)
Romanico Tinto De Toro (Tempranillo) 2011 Romanico Tinto De Toro (Tempranillo) 2011

A ripe, rich, Tempranillo that, as Robert Parker says, "tastes like a wine that costs $50."  But it doesn't, not by a long-shot.  From brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren, who previously created and sold Numanthia-Termes.

"Intense dark berry aromas are complemented by potpourri, cola and vanillin oak. Broad, palate-coating blackberry and blueberry flavors become livelier with air and show an energetic spiciness. Finishes with very good clarity and juicy persistence, the cola and spice notes repeating."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"These are both sensational values from Toro, one of my favorite Spanish appellations in the province of Zamora. This estate largely follows organic viticultural practices in its north-facing vineyards. The soils are primarily sandy/loam, and all of the head-pruned vineyards were planted between 1880 and 1940, and the wines are made from tiny yields. The 2011 Romanico (100% Tinta de Toro) was fashioned from yields of 22 hectoliters per hectare, and was aged six months in 100% new French oak. A sensational red, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet perfume of lead pencil shavings, violets, licorice, blackberries and black currants. Keep in mind that Tinta de Toro is essentially a cousin of Tempranillo, but a lower yielding grape. Full-bodied with a voluptuous texture and a long finish, it should drink well for 6-10 years. It tastes like a wine that costs $50."Wine Advocate 91 points

Joseph Puig Rioja Tinto (Tempranillo) 2011 Product #27596 (In Stock)
Joseph Puig Rioja Tinto (Tempranillo) 2011 Joseph Puig Rioja Tinto (Tempranillo) 2011

An exciting new project from Priorat's Joseph Puig, this line-up of wines made for him by friends from his 40+ years in the business delivers lovely wines at strikingly good prices.  His Rioja is 100% Tempranillo, ripened to perfection, and then aged in 400 liter new French oak barrels for just 4 months. The flavors and aromas here are textbook Tempranillo - sappy, savory, meaty and bursting with purple fruit and a hint of lavender.  The texture is very pure with snappy acids and fine-grained tannins.  Drink it cool as a solo refresher or let it warm up and gain some heft for a wide range of foods.  As Joseph told us, this is Rioja tamed by a Catalan!

Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2010 Product #27931 (In Stock)
Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2010 Bodegas Asenjo & Manso Ceres 2010

Surprising that such a young estate (founded 2004) could deliver the best "old school" Ribera del Duero we've tried in years.  Classic aromas of black fruit, spice, espresso, grilled meat, soy and wild herbs open the s how.  In the mouth, the fruit is plenty rich, but also focused and fresh and accents of soy, hot roasted beef, rich herb and just enough toasty oak give this fantastic complexity.  Firm and fine tannins show on the long finish where a hint of vanilla bean emerges and lingers.  A deeply satisfying and delicious bottle of Tempranillo that's the perfect antidote to over-ripe, over extracted, and over oaked wines that seem to gush from this great Spanish wine region.  A Jonas Gustafsson Selection - which explains a lot, we thing.  A "do not miss this" wine for any Spanish wine fan.

Finca Sobreno Especial 2009 Product #27717 (In Stock)
Finca Sobreno Especial 2009 Finca Sobreno Especial 2009

A majestic Tempranillo from Toro from 50+ year-old vines.  Rich, powerful, and redolent of traditional American oak.

"Deeply pitched aromas of blackberry, violet, smoky oak and mocha. Then sweet, broad and lush on the palate, with explosive dark berry flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and a floral nuance. Finishes with big, broad, supple tannins and superb length. This exotic, large-scaled wine shows surprising energy and focus for its heft."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2009 Finca Sobreno Reserva – Seleccion Especiale is a blend of the estate’s best vineyard (over 50 years in age) and sees half the fruit aged in 14 months in new American oak, the remainder in used oak. It has a lifted floral bouquet of dark berries, briary and dried violets that is well-defined and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry of dark cherries, balsamic, a hint of orange peel and cloves. There is good structure and focus present here, with a clean fresh, focused finish. It is very fine and very elegant for a Toro red. Drink now-2019+"Wine Advocate 93 points

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2009 Product #26360 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2009 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2009

From 80+ year-old Tempranillo vines, hand-harvested, and crushed  by foot to extract plenty of color and flavor without getting harsh tannins from the stems or seeds.  After vinification the wines go into American and French oak barrels – in 2009, 4 new and 12 old (7 years).  The result is just about the perfect marriage between Rioja tradition and modern winemaking sensibility.  In 2009 – the best vintage in Rioja since the great 2005 – this shows all of the power and depth of the past few releases but with a smidge more elegance and purity.  It’s already generous aromatically, with powerful scents of black raspberry and plum fruit accented by notes of sweet spice, tobacco, violets and a touch of iron.  The flavors are rich and almost lush with loads of ripe, dark, fruit lifted up by a note of blood orange acidity and supported by masses of fine, velvety, tannins.  Drink now with rich or smoky foods or let it get even more elegant and complex over the next 8-15 years.
