Hillinger Secco NV Product #20714 (In Stock)
Hillinger Secco NV Hillinger Secco NV

Gently sparkling with fine fruit: that's the Hillinger Secco, the winery's light pink creation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes. This is easily the best (and most dry) release yet. Pretty in the glass and loaded with aromas and flavors of tangy strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit.  Juicy and refreshingly dry on the tangy finish, this would be a great brunch or warm afternoon drink!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages La Daurelle 2007 Product #24539 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages La Daurelle 2007 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes du Rhone Villages La Daurelle 2007

The only wine Philippe makes that ages in barrels, this gets more than a year in small wood (but only a few new ones) – necessary because of the high Syrah content.  Here Grenache (50%), Syrah (30%), Carignan (10%) and Mourvedre (10%) do a beautiful job of expressing Philippe’s rocky vineyards and the vintage’s warmth and ripeness.  The aromas show great freshness for 2007, with the raspberry/blackberry fruit taking on a juicy edge and the Mourvedre adding just the right earthy touch.  In the mouth this is surprisingly light on its feet for a 2007, with big, concentrated berry fruit and earthy flavors getting great lift from the bright acidity.  Everything wraps up with a long, juicy, lightly tannic finish just perferct for grilled or roasted meats or most anything featuring black olives!

Grivault Bourgogne Blanc 2007 Product #22930 (In Stock)
Grivault Bourgogne Blanc 2007 Grivault Bourgogne Blanc 2007

The 2007 vintage was a challenge in Burgundy.  The growing season started early but then slowed dramatically during a wet June and cool, cloudy, July and August.  When August winds began to blow and dry things out, growers jumped to start their Pinot Noir harvests before rot could spread and carry away their crop.  Chardonnay growers had to make a tough decision – start to harvest quickly (limiting losses to rot) or wait for better ripeness and accept lower yields.

At Domaine Grivault, Michel Bardet decided to wait, and was able to harvest a reasonably sized crop in September with good fruit flavors and ripe acids.  After fermentation, the wine completed its malolactic fermentation over the winter and remained in used (4 years older or older) barrels until bottling.  Like most good 2007s, this was intense and a little intimidating when it arrived in the US in March, 2010, but now it’s started to unfurl.

Today, there’s a lot going on aromatically here, with notes of French butter and grilled nuts on top and apple skin, chervil, citrus and a touch of dried herb honey swirling underneath.  In the mouth, very 2007 – bracing and bright with loads of bright lemon, passion fruit, and lemon rind at first and then green apple, lime, limestone coming up underneath.  A note of fresh butter and nut shows towards the end before the juicy acids and saline mineral kick in to make your mouth water.  A sense of lemon butter and fresh mint lingers on and on.  A stunning wine for shell fish or poultry with a touch of citrus right now and still plenty of potential to improve.

Abelis Carthago Lui Tempranillo Toro 2007 Product #26949 (In Stock)
Abelis Carthago Lui Tempranillo Toro 2007 Abelis Carthago Lui Tempranillo Toro 2007

A stunner of a Tempranillo that delivers the muscular intensity you'd hope for from Toro but with just a bit more class than you'd expect.  A 20 month stay in French oak gives roundness and a dose of Christmas spice to the black cherry, blackberry and smoked plum flavors.  Getting close to overripe, but stays poised and supple on the powerful, long, finish.

Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2007 Product #26960 (In Stock)
Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2007 Quinta Do Noval Late Bottled Vintage 2007

While the 2005 earned a strong Wine Spectator 93 point rating, as you'd expect given the outstanding 2007 vintage, this is even better. Very much in the Quinta do Noval style, with masses of dark plum, blackberry, and black raspberry fruit accented by a touch of bitter chocolate that are lifted by impeccable acidity and firm, almost crisp, tannins.  A dose of melted licorice emerges on the long, juicy, finish.  Yummy.

Condado De Haza Ribera Del Duero 2007 Product #25419 (In Stock)
Condado De Haza Ribera Del Duero 2007 Condado De Haza Ribera Del Duero 2007

In the 16 months since Tanzer published his review of the 2007 Condado de Haza, it’s rounded out beautifully and opened up for immediate enjoyment.  It’s 100% Tempranillo given a long fermentation – 25 days – and then aged 18 months in fine-grained American oak.  Easy enough to enjoy on its own on a cold winter’s night, this will sing with grilled meats, rich braises, or most any stew or dish featuring meat and black olives.

“Ruby-red. Musky aromas of berry skin and cherry, with complicating notes of dried flowers and herbs. Firm on entry, then fleshier in the middle, offering sweet red fruit flavors and a subtle peppery quality. Sweeter on the anise-tinged finish, where the cherry element lingers with good intensity. This will be drinking well soon, or could even be enjoyed now with a little aeration.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

Bodegas Monteviejo Gran Monteviejo 2007 Product #26843 (In Stock)
Bodegas Monteviejo Gran Monteviejo 2007 Bodegas Monteviejo Gran Monteviejo 2007

Here, Malbec is firmly on center stage (70% of the blend) with Syrah giving a meaty note and Merlot a touch more perfume and tannin.  Bigger, bolder, and more complex than the Petite Fleur, this wants grilled or roasted lamb or beef right now and will gain even more complexity and meaty, smoky, character over the next few years.  A winner.

“Bright saturated ruby. Cassis, black raspberry and sweet mocha oak on the nose. Lush and supple on entry, then concentrated and bound-up in the mid-palate, with a medicinal cast to the black cherry, licorice and chocolatey oak flavors. Finishes with substantial, broad tannins that coat the teeth.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

“The 2007 Gran Monteviejo is composed of 70% Malbec, 20% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Deep purple in color, it displays a nose of pain grille, pencil lead, roasted black fruits, violets, and exotic spices. This leads to an elegant wine with already complex flavors, exceptional concentration, and 2-3 years of aging potential. This impeccably balanced, pleasure-bent effort will be at its peak from 2012 to 2023.”Wine Advocate 92 points

Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2007 Product #25702 (In Stock)
Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2007 Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2007

Worthy’s Sophia’s Cuvee is the second wine of Axios, a Napa “cult Cabernet” producer best known for its $125 flagship Cab.  It’s been one of our best-selling Napa Cabs ever since its 2001 debut vintage earned 92 points and a place on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list.  Since then, it’s been a super-reliable bottle of Napa Cab with ripe, supple, currant, smoke and green herb flavors and a darkly fruited finish.

Now, the 2007 vintage has arrived and there’s been a BIG step up!  Maybe it’s just the vintage – 2007 is one of the best ever in Napa – but this Worthy is exploding with black currant, blackberry and black plum fruit sweetened with a generous dash of sweet baking spice and a sprinkle of dusty cocoa and shaved bitter chocolate.  Mouth filling and rich, the 2007 Worth remains graceful and elegant and oh so easy to drink.  A winner and a great value.

"The 2007 Sophia’s Cuvee (a 8,000-case blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec) is a big-time sleeper of the vintage. An outstanding example of Napa Bordeaux varietals, it displays loads of white chocolate, creme de cassis, licorice, and a touch of subtle smoke in a medium to full-bodied style. Silky tannins, flesh, and plenty of concentration characterize this wine, which has no hard edges. It is a beauty to drink over the next 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 90 points
