When journalist Victor de la Serena decided it was time to make wine, rather than just write about it, he decided to do things right. Working in the hot, dry, Spanish wine region of Manchuela, he purchased Syrah and Mourvedre cuttings from his favorite winery, the great Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and planted those along with a little of the region’s native Bobal. High-density plantings and meticulous dropping of fruit gave him low yields and careful winemaking with just the right mix of oak delivered a wine with a little modern polish but lots of authentic gutsiness and heart. The 2008 is ready to go now or anytime over the next 5-8 years. Our best price ever on this bold, blockbuster, red.
"76% syrah, 13% mourvedre and 11% bobal, planted on chalky soil; aged in 85% French and 15% American oak that ranged from new to three years old. Bright purple. Spicy, highly fragrant nose features perfumed blackberry, violet and orange peel, with hints of smoke and black olive. Really showing the syrah now. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly lithe; the intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are at once taut and rich, thanks to zesty minerality. Finishes very suave and long, with fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness.” International Wine Cellar 92 points

If you love Grivault’s Bourgogne Blanc and have never tried his “real” Meursault -- well, it’s time. The flavors and aromas in the Meursault are very similar to the Bourgogne but ratcheted up a notch. Hazelnuts, almond, butter, white flower and peach aromas and flavors plus a beguiling fresh mint note. Easy to drink now but with a good 5-10 years of development ahead of it.
