Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Product #28881 (In Stock)
Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011

A fine value in rich, earthy, but nicely focused Monastrell.

"Dark ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, cherry, star anise and candied rose, with a touch of orange zest. Smells like a ripe pinot noir. Fleshy and seamless, offering sappy red fruit flavors and a bitter note of rhubarb. Subtle vanilla and licorice notes linger on the smooth, gently tannic finish. Lots of wine for the money."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"Made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre), Casa Castillo’s 2011 Monastrell comes from incredibly low yields (16 hectoliters per hectare). It reveals abundant flavor along with a chalky minerality, dense blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with a hint of spring flowers, medium body and a supple texture. This is an amazing red wine for such a lowly price."Wine Advocate 89 points

Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011 Product #29191 (In Stock)
Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011 Finca Sobreno Crianza Toro 2011

This has been a Spanish value staple for years now, and the 2011 is yet another fine Toro Tempranillo.  The wine is 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo), hand harvested from vines 30+ years-old. There’s plenty of ripe Temparnillo fruit here – cherry, blackberry and plum – and very nice doses of wood spice and the grape’s exotic sandalwood fragrance.  But cool nights on the vine and careful treatment in the winery leave a bright, refreshing, acidity in place as well and the smooth, refined, tannins don’t get in the way of solo sipping pleasure.  A lot of wine for a very  modest price.

"Deep ruby. Smoky cherry and roasted coffee on the nose, with attractive floral and spicecake notes. Lush and expansive in the mouth, offering broad cherry and cassis flavors and a hint of licorice. A suave, gently sweet and open-knit wine, with a spicy element emerging on the long, gently tannic finish."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Fairhills By Mendoza Vineyards 1907 Malbec 2011 Product #29878 (In Stock)
Fairhills By Mendoza Vineyards 1907 Malbec 2011 Fairhills By Mendoza Vineyards 1907 Malbec 2011

Start with the Fairhill Vineyard, a high-altitude site just outside of the city of Mendoza that was planted by German immigrants in 1907.  Take the ripe fruit quickly to an ultra-modern winery and put it in the hands of talented winemaker Richard Bonvin.  Ferment slowly with labor-intensive pump-overs 4 times daily during fermentation and then age the wine a full year in French and American oak for smoothness and extra intensity.  Then, hold it back at the winery for a bit longer in bottle to let it keep maturing, opening, becoming more delicious. If all this sounds like the recipe for an expensive wine, it is – which is why this was supposed to be a $42 bottle on release. Outstanding value here!

“I tasted a strong quartet from Mendoza Vineyards that are relatively expensive, but certainly do deliver in terms of quality. The 2011 “1907” Malbec, also from Medrano, undergoes four daily pumpovers and is aged in new French and American oak for 12 months. It has a tightly coiled bouquet with blackberry, soy and singed leather emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh, lively dark berry fruit infused with bay leaf and tobacco. It is nicely balanced with a fresh mocha-tinged finish with keen acidity. This has the edge over the Unsung Hero [another MV wine] in terms of tension and length and comes recommended. Drink now-2017."Wine Advocate 90 points

Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011 Product #29643 (In Stock)
Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011 Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011

Aglianico is southern Italy's great red grape, but you can make a fun, festive, fine value wine from it, too!  Basilicata Aglianico is a bit riper and softer than in Campagnia, and Tenuta I Gelsi captures a remarkable amount of fresh fruit and juicy texture in this all tank, young vines, red.  Cherry and blackberry fruit are framed by notes of leather, mineral, licorice and bitter chocolate.  Fresh and juicy with grippy (but ripe) tannins, the plummy fruit and structure suggest a lighter version of California's Petite Sirah. A fine cookout or salami (or even pizza) red

Tenuta di Capraia Chianti Classico 2011 Product #29840 (In Stock)
Tenuta di Capraia Chianti Classico 2011 Tenuta di Capraia Chianti Classico 2011

Capraia's legacy dates from at least the year 998, when the property was donated to the Abbey of San Michele.  The vineyards lie in the most "Classico" portion of Chianti Classico:  the famed Conca d’Oro ("Golden Bowl"), the amphitheater-like hill in the center of Castellina in Chianti.  Here, the estate farms Sangiovese (90% of the blend) for plenty of bright cherry, rose petal, and bitter almond Chianti character plus small plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (5% each) to add complexity and smoothness of texture.  A full year's aging in a mixture of large and small barrels (all used), smooths out the wine's texture and adds a touch of spice without any overt woodiness.

The result is a Chianti Classico that smells, tastes, and finishes like a much more expensive wine, with loads of juicy ripe dark cherry and red berry fruit, floral and spice accents, and a firm, food-friendly, finish.  Delicious right now and sure to keep improving for 3-4 years.

"Tenuta di Capraia's 2011 Chianti Classico is sexy and voluptuous from start to finish. Juicy red berries, rose petals, anise and spices all flow from this effortless, totally gracious Chianti Classico. Soft and perfumed throughout, the 2011 is drinking beautifully today. I would prefer to enjoy the wine in its youth, but it also has more than enough fruit to develop nicely in bottle for a number of years. This is a winner." Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 90 points

"Rich and vibrant, with earthy undertones supporting the cherry and cranberry flavors. Firm and juicy, presenting a long, almond- and mineral-tinged aftertaste."Wine Spectator 90 points

Simple?  Yes - Simply delicious! Pizza/pasta Chianti at a fine value price.

"Renzo Masi is a second brand owned by Fattoria di Basciano's Masi family. The emphasis here is on value wines with vibrant territorial personality. The family has been making wine for three generations. The 2011 Chianti Riserva opens to a plush, dark color and midnight black consistency. The wine shows simple lines without too much in terms of complexity or underlying dimension. It takes a soft and easy approach with no blemishes or extraordinary points of excitement. Ripe cherry fruit and soft tannins make an appropriate curtain call."Wine Advocate 87 points

There’s a lot going on in this complex  Cotes du Rhone, with a texture and shapely feel that you  normally have to pay much more for.  From one of Chateauneuf’s – if not France’s – very best estates, this is ready to drink but will improve for 2-3 years more.

“55% grenache, 25% syrah, 10% carignan, 5% cinsault and 5% mourvedre. Deep ruby. Fresh dark berries and lavender on the spice-accented nose and in the mouth. Clos Siguier Cahors 2011 Product #29262 (In Stock)
Clos Siguier Cahors 2011 Clos Siguier Cahors 2011

Lots of classic Cahors' character here with just enough modern winemaking to make it accessible now.  A blend of 90% Malbec and 10% Tannat from 60 year-old vines that's fermented in tank and allowed to rest and soften in old casks.  Dark, tangy, and honest with sour cherry fruit, crushed herb, and loads of minerality.  Not Mendoza fruity, but not the impenetrable "black wine" that made Cahors famous in the 1300s. Firm on the finish and perfect for stew or roasts.

Sardus Pater Nur Carignano Del Sulcis 2011 Product #28606 (In Stock)
Sardus Pater Nur Carignano Del Sulcis 2011 Sardus Pater Nur Carignano Del Sulcis 2011

If you know the wines of Sardinia at all, you probably think of crisp, refreshing, Vermentino or the Island’s own version of Grenache, called Cannonau.  But on island of St. Antioco, just west of Sardinia proper, the combination of rockier, mineral-rich, soils and cooling sea breezes are perfect for robust Carignano (the French Carignan or Spanish Carenena grape).  In this winery’s entry-level, all tank, example, the aromas show Carignan’s classic ripe blueberry and spice notes with a whiff of crushed stone.  Then you’ll find a big mouthful of really ripe and rich blueberry, blackberry, and black plum fruit with tangy red raspberry notes coming up on the back.  The finish is fantastic, long and full of juicy fruits, crushed stones, and dusty, meat-friendly, tannins.  My note ends “How can you not like this?”  Even more true if you grill up a little lamb.

Mendoza Vineyards MV Malbec Gran Reserva 2011 Mendoza Vineyards MV Malbec Gran Reserva 2011

Everything about this wine is “super-premium” – except the price!  Made to sell for $60 in the US, a change in distribution created this amazing opportunity to enjoy top-shelf luxury at a very nice, everyday, price.

“I was very impressed with this set of wines produced by a company that owns no vineyards, but sources grapes from selected locations in Mendoza. The 2011 Malbec Grand Reserve, aged for 20 months in new Nadalie barrels, smells of leather, forest floor, dill and paprika over a core of cherries in liqueur not unlike some traditional Riojas (from Spain, not from Argentina). The palate is medium-bodied, with some grippy tannins, good acidity and length. This wine calls for food. Drink 2014-2018.” Wine Advocate 92 points

Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Blanc Revillir 2013 Product #29796 (In Stock)
Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Blanc Revillir 2013 Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Blanc Revillir 2013

Many of you have enjoyed Vincent and Sylvie Jouissier’s unoaked Bourgogne Chardonnay in the past, but we found this oak-aged cuvee even more exciting.  Ripe Chardonnay from vineyards scattered across the Cote Chalonnais gets a cool, slow, fermentation in tank and then 10 months gaining in French oak (one-third new) for more complexity and an added dose of richness.

It’s a lovely wine to just look at in the glass, with crystalline clarity and a shimmering yellow-gold color.  Classic white Burgundy aromas of ripe pear and Golden Delicious apple framed by a touch of vanilla, butter, toasted hazelnut and sweet herb.  In the mouth, there’s wonderful purity and clarity to the generous flavors of sweet apple, fresh lemon, hazelnut, spice and mint.  The texture is silky and fresh and the vivid flavors dance easily across your palate, leaving mouthwatering notes of lemon zest, Granny Smith, Key lime, and a kiss of salty stone lingering behind.  The freshness, vivid flavors, and silky feel of the wine make this a wonderful warm weather refresher, but there’s sneaky complexity here and enough structure to support 3-5 years development if you want to wait.
