Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2011 Product #27497 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2011 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2011

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

With another year’s aging, this has just gotten better, richer, and more delicious.  The aromas are pretty and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry frit and hints of dark chocoalte and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.

“Bright purple. Exotic aromas of dark berry preserves, plum and dried flowers Supple and jammy on the palate, offering plush black and blue fruit and a hint of white pepper. Finishes with soft tannins and warm, lingering blue fruit and spice qualities.” International Wine Cellar 88 points

"With a hint of rubber and asphalt, the bouquet on this value wine is generous and topped with blackberry and dark plum aromas. The palate is grabby, with clampy tannins and black-fruit flavors mixed with chocolate and spice. The earthy, lightly herbal finish with rubbery nuances is nice."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

Dom De La Patience Merlot 2011 Product #28723 (In Stock)
Dom De La Patience Merlot 2011 Dom De La Patience Merlot 2011

Organic Grapes  This Langeudoc estate not far from the famous Roman bridge, Pont du Gard, takes its name from a wild aromatic herb called "La Patience" that grows through the vineyard.  And that fresh herbal note runs through this delicious Merlot, too!  You'll find generous aromas of wild berry, raspberry, and baked strawberry fruit with seductive accents of dark chocolate and crushed herb. As the fruit gets more lush and powerful, a classic Langeudoc note of black olive emerges over the soft, juicy, blackberry fruit lingering on the finish.  Fun stuff to serve at a party or enjoy with grilled pork tenderloin!

Anton Bauer Zweigelt Wagram 2011 Product #29055 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Zweigelt Wagram 2011 Anton Bauer Zweigelt Wagram 2011

A great version of Austria's own Zweigelt grape that shows like a cross between juicy Gamay and hearty Cotes du Rhone - making it a great food and fun selection.  Loads of juicy cherry and dark berry fruit with accents of fresh earth, spice, lavender, and fragrant flowers.  Mid-weight on the palate and very fresh and clean on the finish, it's more than bold enough to handle big flavors at table but refreshing and fun enough to just sip all by itself.  A delicious value.

Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2011 Product #27674 (In Stock)
Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2011 Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2011

This little gem WAY over delivers for its modest price.  Winegrower/maker Federico Benegas Lynch is a master of getting perfectly ripe fruit from his old-vine vineyards and, with help from master consultant Michel Rolland, turning out honest wines of great depth and character.  Here you'll find a fun, fruity, wine with earthy blackberry, blueberry, spice and coffee aromas and flavors.  An iron ore minerality adds complexity and the round tannins and bright acids just the right support.  It's fruitier and not quite as complex as Frederico's Estate Malbec, but just perfect for parties or pairing with everyday meals.

Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011 Giuggiolo Toscana Rosso 2011

Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this:  “This is just stupid delicious.”  A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries.  In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak.  Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end.  Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill.  Like I said:  Stupid delicious.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2011 Product #28669 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2011 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2011

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Product #28881 (In Stock)
Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011

A fine value in rich, earthy, but nicely focused Monastrell.

"Dark ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, cherry, star anise and candied rose, with a touch of orange zest. Smells like a ripe pinot noir. Fleshy and seamless, offering sappy red fruit flavors and a bitter note of rhubarb. Subtle vanilla and licorice notes linger on the smooth, gently tannic finish. Lots of wine for the money."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"Made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre), Casa Castillo’s 2011 Monastrell comes from incredibly low yields (16 hectoliters per hectare). It reveals abundant flavor along with a chalky minerality, dense blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with a hint of spring flowers, medium body and a supple texture. This is an amazing red wine for such a lowly price."Wine Advocate 89 points

Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #28169 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Chapoutier Bila-Haut wines have been favorites for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  Although how he managed to find such high-quality fruit in the difficult 2011 vintage is a mystery!

The 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petite Sirah and 10% Petit Verdot, all aged for a few months in used french oak.  It's full of lush currant, cassis, and black plum fruit with just the right accent of Bordeaux-like fresh herb.  Full-bodied and nicely ripe, the touches of oak spice and bitter chocolate add more complexity and the fine tannin will handle a steak easily - but there's no reason not to drink this all by itself. Hands down, the best value we've seen in California over the past two years.

Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Product #28229 (In Stock)
Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011

As Steve Tanzer said about the 2010, "This wine isn't shy about the fruit." From dry-farmed, old vines, grown in the scrubby vineyards of Campo de Borgia, this delivers a huge mouthful of intense Garnacha flavors:  black and red raspberry, black and Bing cherry, licorice, white pepper and more.  Plenty of ripeness, especially on the back where a kirsch-like flavor emerges, but it's also savory black pepper and fine lift and energy. Finishes dry and even a little floral with dark berry lingering on.  Fun to sip; great with any rustic food.  A steal.

Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011 Product #28533 (In Stock)
Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011 Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011

When you're the son and assistant winemaker for Napa legend Ric Forman, you really ought to know a thing or two about making great Chardonnay.  And, when you're married to another third-generation grape grower, you really ought to be able to bring in excellent fruit, too.  So, the only thing really surprising about the outstanding Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay 2011 from Toby and Dawn Forman is the price - sure tastes like $40 Chardonnay, but carries a very attractive sub-$20 price tag!

Made from fruit grown and purchased from around the North Coast, this gets a touch of oak and about 30% goes through malolactic fermentation for a touch of buttery creaminess. The aromas and flavors feature plenty of ripe apple, pear, pineapple and citrus fruit with a nice dose of spice.  The texture is creamy and rich, but the bright acids keep things fresh and pure. A terrific wine, especially at this price!

Bodegas Raffy Malbec Mendoza 2011 Product #29011 (In Stock)
Bodegas Raffy Malbec Mendoza 2011 Bodegas Raffy Malbec Mendoza 2011

Mendoza Malbec with a French flair!  Aromas of earthy plums, black cherry, smoke and spice lead to juicy sweet flavors of cherry, pomegranate, blueberry, and spice.  There’s a touch of Cahors structure here with fine balance and length.  Delicious!

"Deep dark cherry colour. A mix on the nose of sweet blueberry and something more like iron, like a freshly cooked but slightly bloody steak. On the palate, lovely soft dark fruit given an edge by fine freshness. There's tension to balance the ripe but not overripe fruit. Generous but nicely held in check to make it a great food wine. Long juicy finish. This is not a simple Malbec but it has Malbec's sweet dark fruit. Finesse and freshness on the finish."  Jancis Robinson Purple Pages 16.5/20

Intense, delicious Gruner Veltliner from the lower terraces of Tegernseerhof's holdings in the Wachau.  Its Smaragd designation means the grapes got ripe enough for the equivalent of Spatlese in the German system, but this wine is vinified dry.  Aromas of stone fruit and herbs, and a steely, driving minerality on the palate.  Try it with sushi and Asian fusian cuisine - or grilled sausages!

Washington state winery has its roots in Old-World winemaking, eschews scores, and is all about showcasing the potential of the terroir in Washington. Devoid of flash, pretention, or inflated prices, this winery represents the kind of honest winemaking and independent spirit that we love to support.  It doesn't hurt that the wine's delicious!

In 2011, the CMS is once again a blend of Cabernet and Merlot with a dash of Syrah. You'll find plenty of dark fruit, earth, and baking spices on the nose. On the palate the fruit flavors are even richer and more satisfying than last year, but the structure and juicy acidity keeps it all in balance. One of our favorite Barolo estates makes this blend of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera with tiny bits of Albarossa, Freisa and Pinot Noir just for fun!  And, "fun" is the operative word here, in a wine that's bursting with strawberry, red plum, and juicy raspberry fruit.  Notes of black pepper and Asian spice add some complexity and there's just enough polished Nebbiolo tannin to give it shape.  Fantastic purity, zesty acidity, and plenty of luscious fruit make this pretty sophisticated, but mainly just delicious and, well, fun!

Finca Decero Malbec Remolinos Mendoza 2011 Product #28530 (In Stock)
Finca Decero Malbec Remolinos Mendoza 2011 Finca Decero Malbec Remolinos Mendoza 2011

An outstanding value for such a well-made single-vineyard Malbec.  This delivers the luxurious texture often found in Paul Hobbs' wines (he trained Decero's winemaker) but with more savory, meaty, notes to go with the blackberry and cherry fruit and dusting of bitter chocolate.  Complex and really attractive, especially with something roasted or grilled.

"The 2011 Remolinos Vineyard Decero Malbec is young and fruity, with harmony, good acidity, great balance and purity. Clean, long, and well-proportioned with perfectly ripe fruit, it is a delicious wine at a great price."Wine Advocate 90 points

Romanico Tinto De Toro (Tempranillo) 2011 Product #28044 (In Stock)
Romanico Tinto De Toro (Tempranillo) 2011 Romanico Tinto De Toro (Tempranillo) 2011

A ripe, rich, Tempranillo that, as Robert Parker says, "tastes like a wine that costs $50."  But it doesn't, not by a long-shot.  From brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren, who previously created and sold Numanthia-Termes.

"Intense dark berry aromas are complemented by potpourri, cola and vanillin oak. Broad, palate-coating blackberry and blueberry flavors become livelier with air and show an energetic spiciness. Finishes with very good clarity and juicy persistence, the cola and spice notes repeating."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"These are both sensational values from Toro, one of my favorite Spanish appellations in the province of Zamora. This estate largely follows organic viticultural practices in its north-facing vineyards. The soils are primarily sandy/loam, and all of the head-pruned vineyards were planted between 1880 and 1940, and the wines are made from tiny yields. The 2011 Romanico (100% Tinta de Toro) was fashioned from yields of 22 hectoliters per hectare, and was aged six months in 100% new French oak. A sensational red, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet perfume of lead pencil shavings, violets, licorice, blackberries and black currants. Keep in mind that Tinta de Toro is essentially a cousin of Tempranillo, but a lower yielding grape. Full-bodied with a voluptuous texture and a long finish, it should drink well for 6-10 years. It tastes like a wine that costs $50."Wine Advocate 91 points
