The 2011 Gmork actually has a bit more minerality than the Three Star 2009 did along with a touch better richness and definition. Even fresh off the boat in November, 2011, The Post could already see the quality: “The Anton Bauer Gmörk has been one of my favorite bargain whites for years; this vintage arrives early because Austria experienced a warm growing season with an early harvest. A lot more going on in this terrific value Malbec than the price suggests. Monteviejo is owned by the folks at Bordeaux's Ch Le Gay and the wines are made by up-and-commer (and former rock musician) Marcelo Pelleriti - and the combination is turning out some great wines even at this price level. Very ripe aromas and flavors of plum and black cherry get complexity from oak spice and notes of fresh earth. A bit of violet perfume adds to the party in this juicy, fun, red for burgers, chicken, or just sipping.

This lovely Spanish Sauvignon Blanc bursts from the glass with bold aromas of peach, apricot, passion fruit, and mango. In the mouth, it's at once bright and round and packed with orchard fruit, citrus, and green pineapple fruit and just the right dash of herb. Showy, but easygoing and very sippable, there's enough fruit here for New Zealand SB fans in a more relaxed, easy, package.

Basically a “baby Sancerre”, this exciting young Sauvignon Blanc is grown on the same chalky slate soils you’ll find across Sancerre from 10-40 year-old vines, fermented in stainless steel and allowed to rest 3 months on the fine lees. The vineyard is located just outside the legal boundary of Sancerre, but the flavors make you feel right in the middle!
Generous, fresh, aromas of fresh flowers, just cut grass, white grapefruit, and a hint of wet stones burst from the glass. Then in your mouth this crisp, lithe, wine fairly vibrates with more citrus and green apple fruit, tangy gooseberry, and fresh grass. The acidity is refreshing, if a touch softer than last year, and the fruit flavors are juicy and bright. Served cold, it’s thirst quenching and refreshing. Santa Barbara's entry-level Verdicchio has been a favorite at the store for years. For the second year in a row, this vintage sees a bit of a step up from what was already a rock-solid white. Here’s one of those wines that leaves you scratching your head and asking, “How did they make something this good at this price?!?” Old vine (50 years and more), bush-trained, Garnacha is naturally low-yielding and concentrated in this barren, high-altitude, region. All fruit is hand-harvested, double-sorted, and vinified in a mix of stainless steel, concrete and oak.
You'll find a lovely perfume of fresh earth, lavender, and black cherries leading to medium-bodied, fresh, flavors of tart cherry and black raspberry with a spicy, mineral, edge. The balance here is just perfect and the interplay of sweet fruit, tangy acidity, fresh earth, warm stones, and ripe tannin will pull you back for sip after sip. A spicy, ripe, Malbec that will work well at table or on it's own. It's 100% Malbec pleasure with almost no wood influence. Pretty aromas of black berries, spice, lavender and red licorice lead to smooth, rich, flavors of blackberry and blueberry and a lash of coffee and smoky spice. An easy drinker that has just a bit more going on than you'd expect for the price. Bet this would sing with steak rubbed with coffee and ancho chile!

The fact that a wine comes from a famous entertainer (in this case, Train's Jimmy Stafford) isn't a particularly strong endorsement. But here the proof is in the pudding, as they say. This is a bold, juicy, and very fruit-forward bottle of Petite Sirah that somehow stays balanced and fresh. Loaded with ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit and just a touch of plum pudding and spice, this finishes with big, but very soft, tannins. Great burger or sipping wine and very strong value.

Here's an unexpected Viognier value from a small Cotes du Rhone grower located near Corbieres. All the aromatics and flavor you'd expect from fine Viognier - honeysuckle, fresh flowers, peaches, apricots and tropical fruits - in a clean, dry, package. A note of fresh cream and spice shows up in the middle and juicy acidity keeps things fresh on the pretty finish. There's good minerality here with the fine ripeness, but - at 12.5% ABV - no heaviness at all.

Deep purple in color, the 2011 Leese Fitch Cabernet Sauvignon blend jumps from the glass with aromas of juicy blackberries, ripe blueberries, dark chocolate, and toasted walnuts. We (and many of you) loved the 2010 La Formica Soave for its marriage of rich texture and bright, refreshing, acids. The 2011 is at once richer than the 2010 – even more mouthfilling and round – and more fresh and vibrant. Once again, it’s 100% estate-grown Garganega, Soave’s best grape, hand harvested and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel (no oak to mask the flavors).
The color is classic Soave – golden yellow – as are the generous aromas of almonds, lemon zest, white flowers, apricot, and dash of fresh ginger. In the mouth, there’s the fantastic yin/yang of richness and zing that makes Soave so captivating. The texture is silky and round and coats your mouth completely, but the flavors are bright and fresh – Myer lemon, lime zest, tangy apricot, yellow apple and golden pear fruit with just a touch of honeysuckle and fresh almond. A new Pinot Noir California Pinot specialist is normally nothing much to get excited about, but these guys are really on to something. This 100% Pinot from around California aged in all French oak (but not much new) and delivers honest scents of smoky Pinot fruit and a nice mouthful of vibrant Pinot flavors: cherry, pomegranate, fresh earth, and spice. Nicely ripe at just 13.1% alcohol and with juicy, tangy, acidity, it's refreshing and fun to drink on its own or with salmon, salads, or pizza. Great stuff that you'll want to try.
