Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2011 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2011

Another fine vintage for this deep South Italian red that is always robust, but never cooked or heavy. 100% Negromaro done all in tank for freshness.

"Firm and savory, this opens with aromas of ripe berry, clove and graphite. On the palate, notes of clove and black pepper add depth to ripe Morello cherry and crushed raspberry flavors. Supple tannins offer support."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Product #28881 (In Stock)
Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011 Casa Castillo Monestrell Jumiilla 2011

A fine value in rich, earthy, but nicely focused Monastrell.

"Dark ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, cherry, star anise and candied rose, with a touch of orange zest. Smells like a ripe pinot noir. Fleshy and seamless, offering sappy red fruit flavors and a bitter note of rhubarb. Subtle vanilla and licorice notes linger on the smooth, gently tannic finish. Lots of wine for the money."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"Made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre), Casa Castillo’s 2011 Monastrell comes from incredibly low yields (16 hectoliters per hectare). It reveals abundant flavor along with a chalky minerality, dense blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with a hint of spring flowers, medium body and a supple texture. This is an amazing red wine for such a lowly price."Wine Advocate 89 points

Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011 Product #29643 (In Stock)
Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011 Tenuta I Gelsi Ofanto Gelso Rosso 2011

Aglianico is southern Italy's great red grape, but you can make a fun, festive, fine value wine from it, too!  Basilicata Aglianico is a bit riper and softer than in Campagnia, and Tenuta I Gelsi captures a remarkable amount of fresh fruit and juicy texture in this all tank, young vines, red.  Cherry and blackberry fruit are framed by notes of leather, mineral, licorice and bitter chocolate.  Fresh and juicy with grippy (but ripe) tannins, the plummy fruit and structure suggest a lighter version of California's Petite Sirah. A fine cookout or salami (or even pizza) red

Very pure, with generous fruit and a food-friendly structure. "

"With its attractive aromas and flavors of ripe cherries and subtle notes of pine and dried mint, this wine is immediately accessible without being simple. Likewise, in terms of texture, it’s sturdy enough to last a few years, but not so tough as to be off-putting. Complex, flavorful and supple."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Bright and fresh in the mouth, with creamy, floral red and dark cherry flavors and a persistent spiciness. A perfumed mineral tang repeats at the back. Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Vinsacro 2011 Product #30279 (In Stock)
Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Vinsacro 2011 Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Vinsacro 2011

A field blend of 70yr old Tempranillo (55%) plus 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo, 10% Graciano and 5% Monastrell that the winery refers to as "Vidau."  There's a great marriage of the traditional - bright acidity, mellow American oak influence - and the modern - rich texture, loads of fruit - here that will satisfy pretty much any Rioja lover.

"Heady, oak-spiced aromas of black and blue fruits, cigar box and cola, with a sexy floral nuance emerging with aeration. Seductively sweet and expansive, offering intense blueberry, cassis and vanilla bean flavors that deliver liqueur-like intensity and depth. Seamless in texture, with slow-building tannins adding shape to the clinging, smoky finish. In a distinctly modern style and awfully easy to drink now."  Vinous (Reynolds) 92 points

Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Blanc Revillir 2013 Product #29796 (In Stock)
Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Blanc Revillir 2013 Dom de l'Eveche Bourgogne Blanc Revillir 2013

Many of you have enjoyed Vincent and Sylvie Jouissier’s unoaked Bourgogne Chardonnay in the past, but we found this oak-aged cuvee even more exciting.  Ripe Chardonnay from vineyards scattered across the Cote Chalonnais gets a cool, slow, fermentation in tank and then 10 months gaining in French oak (one-third new) for more complexity and an added dose of richness.

It’s a lovely wine to just look at in the glass, with crystalline clarity and a shimmering yellow-gold color.  Classic white Burgundy aromas of ripe pear and Golden Delicious apple framed by a touch of vanilla, butter, toasted hazelnut and sweet herb.  In the mouth, there’s wonderful purity and clarity to the generous flavors of sweet apple, fresh lemon, hazelnut, spice and mint.  The texture is silky and fresh and the vivid flavors dance easily across your palate, leaving mouthwatering notes of lemon zest, Granny Smith, Key lime, and a kiss of salty stone lingering behind.  The freshness, vivid flavors, and silky feel of the wine make this a wonderful warm weather refresher, but there’s sneaky complexity here and enough structure to support 3-5 years development if you want to wait.

Musella Ripasso 2011 Product #29930 (In Stock)
Musella Ripasso 2011 Musella Ripasso 2011

Valpolicella Ripasso is often called “baby Amarone,” but this lovely 2011 from the certified biodynamic Musella estate is better than that.  It’s a blend of Corvina (about 70%), Rondinella (20%) and a scant 10% Barbera for an extra layer of complexity and lift.  About 20% of the wine is made from air-dried grapes and 20% from fresh, with the remaining 60% “ripasso” – allowed to undergo a brief second fermentation on the Amarone lees.  A few months in larger French oak casks helps smooth out and integrate the wine without adding any oaky flavors.

Seductive aromas of dried cherry, cranberry and strawberry shine through on the nose with hints of menthol, tar, and lavender.  The palate is silky, fresh, and layered, with dried black cherry and cranberry fruit and accents of dried flowers, chocolate, spice, and earth.  The finish is juicy and balances sweet fruit with a sour cherry tang that lingers on nicely over fine, supple, tannins.  Clean, pure, and loads of fun to drink, this will be a great match for pizza, burgers, and pork now and for the next 3-4 years

Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011 Product #29492 (In Stock)
Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011 Ch Morin Saint-Estephe 2011

Most "value" Bordeaux carries a regional "Bordeaux" or "Medoc" label, so we were excited to find this gem from the prestigious commune of Saint-Estephe showing loads of Saint-Estephe character in the tricky 2011 vintage.   It's rich and deep, with more robust black currant fruit complementing its spice, cedar, and black olive notes.  As you'd expect from a mainly-Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux, there's good structure here but also lots of ripe fruit (if no overt fruitiness).  This will develop nicely over the next 5-8 years in cellar, but will also drink well now with lamb, pork chops, or beef.  Fine value.

Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011 Product #29514 (In Stock)
Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011 Dom Notre Dame Des Pallieres Gigondas Les Mourres 2011

This is old-school Gigondas from 50 year-old (average) Grenache (80%), Mourvedre (15%) and Syrah (5%) grown on classic Gigondas soils – a mixed salad of marly-calcareous soils, sandy clay sub-soils, and scattered scree washed down from the limestone outcroppings further up the hill.  The Grenache and Syrah were fermented and aged in vat and the Mourvedre in old oak casks.

The result – a very fine, classically, styled Gigondas that you can drink right now or cellar for 4-6 years if you like.  Big, bold, aromas of roasted strawberry, macerated raspberry, and dark black cherry fruit with a touch of garrigue – black olive tapenade, sappy herb, and lavender – that gets bolder and richer with air.  It’s a big, mouthfilling wine – we are in the Rhone, after all – that pumps out rich flavors of dark red berry and cherry and plenty of garrigue.  A stony, almost salty, mineral streak that just screams “Gigondas” runs right down the middle of the palate and sails on through the long, finely tannic, finish.  The combination of richness and freshness are just lovely, and I suspect (like me) you’ll find the bottle empty all too soon.

Rovero Nebbiaia Monferrato Rosso 2011 Product #29320 (In Stock)
Rovero Nebbiaia Monferrato Rosso 2011 Rovero Nebbiaia Monferrato Rosso 2011

A brand new winery to us, but one that's clearly onto something good.  This is 100% Nebbiolo, organically grown in Monferato near Asti.  Big, generous, aromas and flavors of black cherry and plum take center stage with accents of spice and vanilla.  Dusty, rich, tannins give the wine mass and structure, but the fruit just won't quit pumping out from begging to end.  Mouthwatering, long, and - all to rare for Nebbiolo - flat out fun to drink.

Dom Des Baumard Coteaux Du Layon Carte d'Or 2011 Product #28429 (In Stock)
Dom Des Baumard Coteaux Du Layon Carte d'Or 2011 Dom Des Baumard Coteaux Du Layon Carte d'Or 2011

A brilliant late-harvest Chenin that crackles with energy - drink with almond desserts or on it's own.

"This selection of grapes from old vines is presented as the least sweet and the lightest of Baumard\'s late-harvest wines. It\'s clean and dynamic, a heady, layered chenin with scents of jasmine, orange and apple butter. The juiciness comes up against soil-inflected acidity, a fine, sandy grit to ameliorate the sweetness. Pour it with a savory almond torte."Wine & Spirits 93 points

"The acidity is almost shocking, cutting through the richness of the wine. Its sweet apple and lemon flavors balance the honey and maple syrup notes. The wine is still young, demanding aging over a decade at least. beautifully ripe. Screwcap." Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Yup - there's a lot more to New Zealand than Suavignon Blanc and Pinot Noir!  Take this lovely Pinot Gris from certified organically farmed vines grown not too far from the sea in Central Ontago. The results are a bit of a cross between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris, with Oregon's ripe pear fruit and rich texture paired with Italy's tangy passion fruit and bitter orange citrus notes.  Finishes long and mouthwatering with a touch of orange peel.  A fun match with Asian food or anything a bit fruity.

Famous for their everyday Lot Series red, this is Marietta's top wine, an estate Zinfandel of real power and depth with a nice touch of class, too.

"The 2011 Angeli Cuvée (15.2% natural alcohol) is composed of primarily Zinfandel blended with Carignane and Petite Sirah. It exhibits briery, peppery, meaty, raspberry and black cherry notes, a generous, succulent mouthfeel, and a heady, lush finish. Like its siblings, this wine delivers terrific intensity, beautiful purity, and lots of value. Drink now-2020."Wine Advocate 90 points

"Bright red cherries, pine, spice and mint are some of the notes that jump from the glass in the 2011 Barbaresco Vallegrande. Floral and lifted in the glass, the 2011 stands out for its nuance and delineation. In this vintage, the Vallegrande retains its essentially perfumed, mid-weight personality."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points
