Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #27006 (In Stock)
Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

This is a big "bang for the buck" Cabernet from Chile that reminds you how Chile first established its global reputation for top quality Cab at rock-bottom prices.  Fruit for this wine grows near Chile’s Coastal Mountain range in the Colchagua Valley.  Daytime high temperatures can reach 98 degrees here, but cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean cool the fruit at night to preserve freshness and acidity.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon delivers plenty of classic Cabernet fruit –  currant, plum, and blackberries.  It also display's Chile's trademark whiff of herbs and some appealing tobacco aromas, giving the wine more complexity than you’d expect at this price.  In the mouth, it’s juicy and satisfying, with an extra dose of black raspberry and currant fruit.  The juicy acids keep everything in balance and make this a flexible companion with a wide range of foods.

Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2011 Product #26807 (In Stock)
Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2011 Ch La Roche St. Jean Bordeaux Rouge 2011

A classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%). This is a soft, fruit filled, take on Bordeaux that fills your mouth with juicy red currant and black berry fruit accented by a touch of spice.  Subtle notes of fresh herb and tobacco keep this anchored in Bordeaux, and there’s just the enough ripe tannin to let it work well at table (but not enough to get in the way of solo sipping).

Uvaggio Vermentino Lodi 2011 Product #27447 (In Stock)
Uvaggio Vermentino Lodi 2011 Uvaggio Vermentino Lodi 2011

The 2011 edition started out a bit closed and tight, but now it’s opened up to deliver complex, delicious, aromas and flavors of golden apple, ripe pear, lemon curd, and fennel.  The lemony fruit gets a hint of kumquat and salty sea breeze on the brisk, mouthwatering, finish.  Surprisingly rich-feeling in your mouth, especially given the less than 13% alcohol, this is a killer back porch sipper and better still with briny seafood or salty meats.  As Jancis Robinson said of the 2008, “one mouthful of this was enough to remind me of a lunch in Liguria high above the sparkling blue Mediterranean."

"BEST BUY! Made from a hard-to-find variety in California, this bright, beautifully aromatic wine expresses gorgeous scents of jasmine that follow through in flavor to the finish. Its layers of lime, apple and a generous level of minerality are perfectly executed and waiting for seafood."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Drops Of Jupiter California Red Wine Blend 2011 Drops Of Jupiter California Red Wine Blend 2011

The fact that a wine comes from a famous entertainer isn't a particularly strong endorsement. But here the proof is in the pudding, as they say.  From Train's Jimmy Stafford and Concannon Vineyard, this is once again a rock solid value red for sipping and grilling.  Mainly Petite Sirah, it's ripe and fruit-forward with loads of blackberry and boysenberry fruit plus just a touch of plum pudding and spice.  Soft and wide open from first pour, this finishes with big, but very soft, tannins.  Great burger or sipping wine and a very nice value, too.

Josephine Dubois Bourgogne Blanc 2011 Josephine Dubois Bourgogne Blanc 2011

At their best, 2011 white Burgundies hint at 2008's vibrant minerality but deliver softer, more easy to enjoy now, pleasure.  That's the case here.  A fine, honest, bottle of Chardonnay with notes of green apple, chalk, limes kin and toasted nuts.  Clean and fresh from start to finish - a little Chablis-like, actually - with good length and a touch of saline mineral on the mouthwatering finish.  Very classy Bourgogne, especially at this price!

"A terrific chardonnay with mouthwatering acidity and impeccable balance, this is an excellent wine for casual meals." 2 Stars Dave McIntyre, Washington Post

Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2011 Product #27674 (In Stock)
Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2011 Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2011

This little gem WAY over delivers for its modest price.  Winegrower/maker Federico Benegas Lynch is a master of getting perfectly ripe fruit from his old-vine vineyards and, with help from master consultant Michel Rolland, turning out honest wines of great depth and character.  Here you'll find a fun, fruity, wine with earthy blackberry, blueberry, spice and coffee aromas and flavors.  An iron ore minerality adds complexity and the round tannins and bright acids just the right support.  It's fruitier and not quite as complex as Frederico's Estate Malbec, but just perfect for parties or pairing with everyday meals.

Here is my actual tasting note from the first time I tried this:  “This is just stupid delicious.”  A few more details – this is 100% Sangiovese made in staeinless steel that opens with fresh and lovely aromas of violets, purple fruits and crushed cherries.  In the mouth it’s juicy and ripe with loads of pretty fruit and a dark, earthy, streak.  Bright and clean through the end with a delicious note of coffee and cocoa dust emerging at the end.  Drink it with a little chill with pizza and pasta or warmer with anything off the grill.  Like I said:  Stupid delicious.

A project of importer Eric Solomon and Ventoux's Frederic Chaudiere, this comes from 40-60 year-old Grenache growing in high-altitude vineyards named for a 400 year-old farmhouse.  Bursting with ripe, juicy, strawberry and cherry fruit with rich accents of damp earth and cracked black pepper.  It's full in texture and flavor, but with plenty of body but also a nice sappy freshness.  A bold bistro red to enjoy with or without food.

Biodynamic  Like a church bell on a winter morning, this is clear and true.  Plenty of pure, ripe, fresh raspberry fruit and just a touch of fresh herb that never veers off into bell pepper territory.  There's enough earthiness for any Loire Cab Franc fan, but the purity and ripeness of the juicy fruit makes this easy for anyone to love.  It's easy, but not simple.

Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011 Product #27692 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011 Kellerei Kaltern Chardonnay Wadleith 2011

This is the kind of wine that challenges preconceptions, especially if you think "foothills of the Dolomites" means "cool climate wines."  In fact, there's plenty of warmth in the region around Bolzano, which makes it possible to grow some pretty captivating Chardonnay - if you're careful.  The growers of Kelleri Kaltern plant the fruit for this wine on chalky gravel (Chardonnay loves chalk!) in windy crevices of the mountains.  The breeze keeps the fruit healthy and lets the fruit hang until late in the season, developing plenty of sugar and complex, ripe, flavors.  Whole cluster pressing, fermentation in steel, and aging about 30% in large casks preserves freshness and adds complexity.

The result is a ripe-smelling Chardonnay with generous tropical fruit framed with notes of vanilla, butter, and smoke.  Full and creamy on the palate where the fruit and hazelnut flavors coat your mouth, there's plenty of bright acidity to keep things fresh.  Tastes much more expensive than even the reasonable regular price!

Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #28169 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Chapoutier Bila-Haut wines have been favorites for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  Although how he managed to find such high-quality fruit in the difficult 2011 vintage is a mystery!

The 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petite Sirah and 10% Petit Verdot, all aged for a few months in used french oak.  It's full of lush currant, cassis, and black plum fruit with just the right accent of Bordeaux-like fresh herb.  Full-bodied and nicely ripe, the touches of oak spice and bitter chocolate add more complexity and the fine tannin will handle a steak easily - but there's no reason not to drink this all by itself. Hands down, the best value we've seen in California over the past two years.

Dom Vincent Dampt Chablis 2011 375ml Product #27035 (In Stock)
Dom Vincent Dampt Chablis 2011 375ml Dom Vincent Dampt Chablis 2011 375ml

This is stony, pure, Chablis with plenty of crisp fruit and slatey mineral and just a touch of roundness from limited use of neutral oak.  Creamy without any sign of heaviness and very nice length for a Village wine.

"A solidly complex and reasonably refined nose features notes of dried flowers, lemon zest, mineral reduction and a hint of iodine. There is good energy to the racy and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess a seductive texture before terminating in a persistent, clean and moderately dry finish. This harmonious effort should mature quickly. Outstanding Top Value."Allen Meadows 89 points

Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Product #28229 (In Stock)
Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011

As Steve Tanzer said about the 2010, "This wine isn't shy about the fruit." From dry-farmed, old vines, grown in the scrubby vineyards of Campo de Borgia, this delivers a huge mouthful of intense Garnacha flavors:  black and red raspberry, black and Bing cherry, licorice, white pepper and more.  Plenty of ripeness, especially on the back where a kirsch-like flavor emerges, but it's also savory black pepper and fine lift and energy. Finishes dry and even a little floral with dark berry lingering on.  Fun to sip; great with any rustic food.  A steal.

Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2010 Product #26899 (In Stock)
Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2010 Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2010

When you're the son and assistant winemaker for Napa legend Ric Forman, you really ought to know a thing or two about making great Chardonnay.  And, when you're married to another third-generation grape grower, you really ought to be able to bring in excellent fruit, too.  So, the only thing really surprising about the outstanding Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay 2010 from Toby and Dawn Forman is the price - sure tastes like $40 Chardonnay, but carries a very attractive sub-$20 price tag!

Made from fruit grown and purchased from around the North Coast, this gets a touch of oak and about 30% goes through malolactic fermentation for a touch of buttery creaminess. The aromas and flavors feature plenty of ripe apple, pear, pineapple and citrus fruit with a nice dose of spice.  The texture is creamy and rich, but the bright acids keep things fresh and pure. A terrific wine, especially at this price!
