Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2009 Product #28252 (In Stock)
Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2009 Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2009

Like 2011, the 2009 harvest was quite warm, yielding softer wines than in 2004 or 2006.  While this 2009s won’t go the 20+ years in cellar that Valdicava usually will, it compensates by being much more open and accessible today.  It’s a rich, deeply flavored, wine that shows the dark fruit, fresh floral, and dark chocolate flavors Valdicava is known for, but in a more silky, elegant, package than usual.  Marvelous wine.

“A silky, fine 2009 Brunello with light berry, chocolate and prune character. Medium to full body. Ultra-fine tannins. A wonderfully crafted Valdicava along the same lines as the excellent 2004. Drink or hold.”  James Suckling 94 points

“Vincenzo Abbruzzese’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a dense and full-bodied rendition that delivers an enormously floral bouquet of crushed rose petal and dried potpourri with background tones of cinnamon stick, root beer and caramelized brown sugar. Past vintages of this wine have shown great power and structure in the mouth, but the 2009 vintage is veiled and nuanced instead. There’s a silky and tight quality to the tannin backed by a long, polished feel. The wine never feels bulky or dense. It will be interesting to see how it evolves, but if you don’t want to wait, it can also be consumed in the near-term. Drink: 2016-2024.”Wine Advocate 92+ points

Ch Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2010 Product #26469 (In Stock)
Ch Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2010 Ch Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2010

Complex and very, very, long.

"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc (80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc vinified in tank) exhibits very good acidity along with a lighter, more delicate style than previous vintages (malolactic is now totally blocked), and restrained orange peel, tangerine oil, white peach, honeysuckle and candle wax notes. This medium to full-bodied, zesty, fresh wine is still backward and unevolved, so cellar it for 1-2 years and drink it over the following 10+."Wine Advocate 90 points

"Juicy up front, with lively star fruit, peach and yellow apple fruit, this turns plush and languid, with alluring grilled hazelnut, sweetened butter and warm piecrust notes filling in on the finish. Sneakily long, thanks to the nicely integrated acidity. Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Picardan, Clairette and Bourboulenc. Drink now through 2015."Wine Spectator 93 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Product #26601 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!

Oddero Barolo Brunate 2010 Product #29254 (In Stock)
Oddero Barolo Brunate 2010 Oddero Barolo Brunate 2010

From a tiny, 1 acre, plot in La Mora's outstanding Brunate vineyard, this delivers much more concentration and intensity than Oddero's fine 2010 Normale.  The 50-60 year-old vines were hand harvested in early October, manually destemmed, and given a warm fermentation and 25 day maceration.  Aging in smaller, 20 hectoliter, casks helped soften Brunate's massive structure a bit, but this still needs at least 10 years in cellar to really shine.

“Underbrush, intense rose petal, rosemary, grilled herbs and red berry scents leap from the glass. Polished and almost pulsating with energy, the palate displays succulent red cherry, sage, leather, cinnamon and white pepper alongside supple tannins and vibrant acidity. Drink after 2020 for more complexity.”Wine Enthusiast 95 points

“Expressive and forward, offering cherry, tar, menthol and spice accents. The tannins are dense and grippy, but this finds equilibrium in the end. Sweet at the core, but needs time to fully emerge. Best from 2018 through 2032.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St George La Charmotte 2012 Product #29164 (In Stock)
Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St George La Charmotte 2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St George La Charmotte 2012

"Rose petals, mint, pine and rosemary meld into sweet red fruits in the 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges La Charmotte, a wine that stands out for its energy and tension. There is a crystalline purity to the fruit that is impossible to miss. The Charmotte is shaping up to be a beauty."  Antonio Galloni 90-92 points

"An intensely floral character adds breadth to the very fresh, pure, cool and restrained aromas of various red berries, earth and humus. Here too there is a lovely mouth feel to the detailed and energetic middle weight flavors that possess excellent length and almost no rusticity. There is a hint of bitterness present though I attribute this to the recent bottling and not to under ripe tannins or excessively toasted wood. Recommended."Allen Meadows 89 points

"Redcurrant and floral aromas show an almost liqueur-like ripeness. Dense, fat and sweet, offering terrific intensity and inner-mouth tension to its flavors of dried berries and rose petal. The finish builds impressively for village wine. Liger-Belair told me the crop level here was just ten (!) hectoliters per hectare."International Wine Cellar 91 points

Warre's Vintage 1994 Product #29343 (In Stock)
Warre's Vintage 1994 Warre's Vintage 1994

"One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port."Wine Spectator 94 points

Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Product #28944 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010

Shirley Roy never meant to make two wines from her 20 or so acre estate in a crook of Napa’s Soda Canyon.  But, winemaker Philippe Melka felt the vineyard spoke with two voices – one aristocratic and intense, the other softer, more plush and mellow.  Prop Red is the second of those voices, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.  After dropping half her crop in 2010, Shirley was rewarded with this ripe and welcoming red that’s already delicious and sure to improve for years.  A bit of a cross between the black-fruited 2008 and the finer, more detailed, 2009.

“Roy’s 2010 Proprietary Red has a little more delineation and nuance than the 2009. Freshly cut flowers, violets, super ripe dark fruit, mocha, espresso, chocolate, plums, cassis and black currants all jump from the glass in this opulent full-bodied huge wine. Layers of fruit continue to build to the creamy, expressive finish.  Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”  Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blueberry, coffee, mocha, truffle and chocolate show a slightly porty quality. Fat, smooth and lush in the mouth, offering immediate accessibility. The truffley element carries through on the palate. This nicely rich, layered blend finishes with dusty tannins and good length.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011 Product #29355 (In Stock)
Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011

Italy's first 100% Sangiovese super-Tuscan red remains one of the very, very, best.  Limited.

"A vivid, beautiful wine, the 2011 Pergole Torte is superb. Warm, early-maturing harvests often attenuate the differences between sites, but not here. The old vines weathered the heat better, resulting in a wine that is very much in line with the past, but with more body, amplitude and resonance. Rose petals, bright red stone fruits and mint are some of the many notes that grace the super-expressive finish.  Drink 2019-2038."  Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 97 points

"The 2011 Le Pergole Torte is a stunning expression from the heart of Tuscany and a worldwide ambassador for the Sangiovese (called Sangioveto on the label) grape. Brilliant in ruby color and buoyant in aromatic intensity, the wine is brimming with inner energy and verve. It speaks in high decibels with pristine cherry, anise seed, cola, balsam herb and almond paste. There’s a touch of softness buried within what is otherwise a tightly textured tapestry of flavors. In terms of texture, the wine is infinitely silky and long. Be patient for five years more at least. Drink 2016-2028"Wine Advocate 95 points

En Numeros Vermells Carinyena Quasi Centenaria 2013 Product #29836 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Carinyena Quasi Centenaria 2013 En Numeros Vermells Carinyena Quasi Centenaria 2013

No point in overselling this one, because Silvia made only 389 bottles and Jonas only got 192 (and both he and I have kept some back for ourselves).  “Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919.  The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat.  Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.

The wine is rich and long and astonishing, not so much for its intensity of blue/black fruit, chocolate and spice, which you’d expect from such old vines growing in a place like this, as it is for the amazing freshness.  At a technical level, a wine this big (labeled 15.5% and probably more than that) with fairly little measurable acidity.  So how it is that you experience such brightness and lift to the super-ripe fruit and a mouthwatering, almost savory, finish with no perceptible heat?  Silvia and Jonas speculate that the intense minerality of the soil and freshening winds that sweep through the vineyard are responsible.  For me, I think it’s magic – Silvia Puig Priorat magic.

Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Product #27202 (In Stock)
Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Grahams Vintage 2011 Port

A classic and classy Port with good structure and plenty of length. A bit more sophisticated than Dow if not quite as powerful.

"The 2011 Graham’s comes from the five quintas that have been the source for many years (Malvedos, Tua, Vila Velha, das Lages and Vale de Malhadas). It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousao and 23% mixture of very old vines. It has a more “serious” bouquet compared to the Dow, with beguiling scents of blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and cloves. Straight-laced, very well-defined and compelling, the palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and supremely well-judged acidity. It is utterly harmonious, with a pure core of ripe black cherries, damson, marmalade, clove and spices, and the finish lingers long in the mouth."Wine Advocate 95-97 points

"Offers a decadently fruity aroma, with peppery accents to the cherry, raspberry and dark currant flavors that are lithe and juicy. Grippy tannins grace the mocha- and chocolate-infused finish. Best from 2025 through 2055."Wine Spectator 96 points

Dom Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Les Suchots 2011 Dom Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Les Suchots 2011

“Perhaps the greatest wine to issue from this estate, the Suchots sits on deep and heavy clay at 270 meters altitude with an east-southeast exposure.  Chezeaux owns a bit more than one-third of a hectare in this elite lieu-dit which sits opposite Richebourg and Romanée Saint Vivant.”  Importer Neal Rosenthal

“The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots comes across as a bit understated in this vintage. The customary textural finesse is present, but there is a bit less density in the fruit. Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Product #27382 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Philippe Melka makes this wine from selected barrels of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (95%) and a little Petit Verdot (5%).  For this wine, he chooses barrels that emphasize Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure and minerality vs. the lusher, more plush, Proprietary red.  The wine ages 18 months (vs. 14 for the Prop Red) in 100% new French oak. “Aristocratic” was my first note on tasting this in March, 2012, and words like “pure”, “elegant”, “powerful”, and, most of all, “long!” all cropped up as well.  Where the 2008 Proprietary Red is luscious, this is more reserved and complex with finer structure and much deeper minerality and snap.  Just lovely stuff.

“Close in quality but perhaps not quite as exuberant and profound is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot). It boasts an opaque purple color as well as abundant notes of charcoal, scorched earth, underbrush, licorice, black currants and blackberries. Slightly more evolved than the 2007, it is nearly that wine’s equal in terms of depth, richness and overall appeal. This strong effort should drink well for two decades or more.”Wine Advocate 93 points

Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012 Product #28889 (In Stock)
Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012 Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012

As always, one of the most impressive wines in all of Chateauneuf, this marries the intense ripeness of old-vine Grenache to the earthy complexity and power of Mourvedre.  Only 70 cases made and about half that imported to the USA.  Probably the most pure power you’ll find in any Chateauneuf of the vintage.

“Opaque ruby. Expressive cherry compote, incense and licorice aromas are complemented by potpourri, vanilla and smoky minerals. Seamless, juicy and deep, offering expansive black raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a suave floral pastille quality. Shows impressive density with zero excess weight, finishing sweet, broad and very long. Potentially one of the wines of the vintage.”International Wine Cellar 93-95 points

“The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is flat out gorgeous. Meaty and rich, with floral-tinged notes of blackberry, raspberry, melted licorice, ground garrigue and roasted meats, this full-bodied, rich and decadent effort has perfect integration of its fruit, acidity and tannin, with no hard edges and building richness. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and have upward of two decades of longevity. Drink 2016-2032.” Wine Advocate 94-97+ points

Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina 2005 Product #29253 (In Stock)
Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina 2005 Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina 2005

One of Barolo's most legendary wines, Percristina is fashioned by the legendary Dominico Clerico from old vines in the Mosconi cru and aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barriques.  After bottling, Clerico holds the wine in a temperature controlled room dedicated entirely to Percristina until he feels it is at the opening of its long drinking window.  Fans of wines from Scavino, La Spinetta, and Vietti will love the lush, rich, texture here and the dark, powerful, fruit.  Yes, it shows some oak today, but let it rest for a decade and all will be very, very, well.

This has been a bit controversial among critics, with opinions breaking in unexpected ways.  James Suckling - for whom oak on Barolo is never a problem - gave it a middling 93 point rating.  Antonio Galloni - open to a wide range of Barolo styles - thought it magnificent when first bottles (94 points) but worried that the wine seemed too delicate when re-tasting in 2013 (91 points).  And, Steve Tanzer - never a fan of oak on Nebbiolo - loved it right after bottling (94 points) and gushed even more (97+ points) when re-tasting it two years later - making Percristina his wine of the vintage!

We have only 5 six packs to offer (after I take my allocation!), and I won't pull a cork on one of my bottles for at least another 5 years.  But Dominico told me he loves this wine and thinks it will be one of his better Percristina's ever, so I'm feeling pretty confident I'll be happy with it - and that you will be, too.  Here are the three most recent reviews from Suckling, Galloni, and Tanzer:

"Wonderful aromas of dark fruits, flowers and licorice follow to a full body, with fine tannins and a clean finish. It's drinking beautifully now. So much nut and fruit flavors at the finish. Still very young. Better in 2015."  James Suckling 93 points

"The 2005 Barolo Percristina boasts a serious core of fruit, especially within the context of the year. Racy and ripe, the 2005 caresses the palate with expressive aromas and flavors. Since it was first bottled, the 2005 has become much more delicate, polished and refined from a textural standpoint, but it has also lost some of its pure excitement and freshness, especially in the fruit."  Antonio Galloni 91 points

"Good full red. Distinctly balsamic aromas of brown spices, tobacco, pepper, camphor and star anise. Thick on entry, then bright and sharply delineated in the mid-palate, with great energy and tactile minerality. This compellingly solid, chewy, classic Barolo finishes with great tannic force and grip and is virtually impossible to spit. An explosively long Barolo that will need long aging."  Steve Tanzer 97+ points

Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 1.5l Villa Le Prata Brunello Di Montalcino 2010 1.5l

Even better in big bottle! As always, there’s something a bit feminine about this Brunello created by a remarkable trio of Italian women, but in 2010 it’s a bit more voluptuous than in the past.  The aromas are compelling and sultry, dark and spicy, while the palate shows a plush sexiness.  At this early point in development, it’s still pretty stern and brooding, but – as Wine Advocate notes – it gets much friendlier and more approachable with air.  You’ll get 15 years of pleasure from this powerful wine with everything from grilled Bistecca alla Fiorentina to roasted lamb or stews.

“Incredible aromatics here with smoked meat, toffee, light prune, dried cherry, and dried flower. Full body, soft and velvety tannins and a long, sexy finish. Wonderful depth and intensity. Big wine from a little producer. Try in 2017.”  James Suckling 94 points

“The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows smooth lines and a curvaceous figure. Soft aromas of cherry, Spanish cedar, licorice, dried rosemary and roasted almond rise from the bouquet. I tried this wine during two phases, once shortly after the bottle was opened and a second time 24 hours later. The evolution and softening of the wine was remarkable and is very encouraging in terms of its potential longevity. Yet, you never lose sight of that characteristic Sangiovese tartness and freshness. Drink this elegant Brunello after 2017.”Wine Advocate 92 points

"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1983 is richly perfumed and fragrant, which is so typical of the ports from this vintage, and is seemingly more forward than normal."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012

A classic; rich and powerful.  Best from 2017-2027.

“Slightly reduced aromas of roasted black raspberry, licorice and violet. A sweet, fine-grained fruit bomb in the mouth, offering more definition and verve than the Boudots to its blackberry and cassis flavors. Creamy-sweet but with nicely integrated acidity and ripe, fine-grained tannins giving the wine shape and energy. This wine was made entirely from vines planted in 1981 as the Meuniers pulled up the oldest vines for replanting before the 2012 season.” International Wine Cellar 91-93 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Chaboeufs has a very well defined, slightly metallic bouquet that is vigorous and focused. The palate is very silky and more refined than the Les Boudots. Despite some reduction this seems to have more class and finesse, serving as a decent Nuits Saint Georges without the bells and whistles.” Wine Advocate 92-94 points

“The superb Les Chaboeufs 1er Cru exhibits a dark red fruit nose with hints of herbs and loam. It boasts outstanding floral and dark berry fruit flavor and has an elegant mouth feel with, soft round tannins and a long finish. Drink in 2017 for an additional 10 years minimum.”i-Wine Review 93 points
