Like 2011, the 2009 harvest was quite warm, yielding softer wines than in 2004 or 2006.  While this 2009s won’t go the 20+ years in cellar that Valdicava usually will, it compensates by being much more open and accessible today.  It’s a rich, deeply flavored, wine that shows the dark fruit, fresh floral, and dark chocolate flavors Valdicava is known for, but in a more silky, elegant, package than usual.  Marvelous wine.

“Vincenzo Abbruzzese’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a dense and full-bodied rendition that delivers an enormously floral bouquet of crushed rose petal and dried potpourri with background tones of cinnamon stick, root beer and caramelized brown sugar. Past vintages of this wine have shown great power and structure in the mouth, but the 2009 vintage is veiled and nuanced instead. There’s a silky and tight quality to the tannin backed by a long, polished feel. The wine never feels bulky or dense. It will be interesting to see how it evolves, but if you don’t want to wait, it can also be consumed in the near-term. Drink: 2016-2024.”Wine Advocate 92+ points

From a tiny, 1 acre, plot in La Mora's outstanding Brunate vineyard, this delivers much more concentration and intensity than Oddero's fine 2010 Normale.  The 50-60 year-old vines were hand harvested in early October, manually destemmed, and given a warm fermentation and 25 day maceration.  Aging in smaller, 20 hectoliter, casks helped soften Brunate's massive structure a bit, but this still needs at least 10 years in cellar to really shine.

Polished and almost pulsating with energy, the palate displays succulent red cherry, sage, leather, cinnamon and white pepper alongside supple tannins and vibrant acidity. Shirley Roy never meant to make two wines from her 20 or so acre estate in a crook of Napa’s Soda Canyon.  But, winemaker Philippe Melka felt the vineyard spoke with two voices – one aristocratic and intense, the other softer, more plush and mellow.  Prop Red is the second of those voices, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.  After dropping half her crop in 2010, Shirley was rewarded with this ripe and welcoming red that’s already delicious and sure to improve for years.  A bit of a cross between the black-fruited 2008 and the finer, more detailed, 2009.

Freshly cut flowers, violets, super ripe dark fruit, mocha, espresso, chocolate, plums, cassis and black currants all jump from the glass in this opulent full-bodied huge wine. A classic and classy Port with good structure and plenty of length. A bit more sophisticated than Dow if not quite as powerful.

"The 2011 Graham’s comes from the five quintas that have been the source for many years (Malvedos, Tua, Vila Velha, das Lages and Vale de Malhadas). It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousao and 23% mixture of very old vines. It has a more “serious” bouquet compared to the Dow, with beguiling scents of blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and cloves. Straight-laced, very well-defined and compelling, the palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and supremely well-judged acidity. Philippe Melka makes this wine from selected barrels of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (95%) and a little Petit Verdot (5%).  For this wine, he chooses barrels that emphasize Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure and minerality vs. the lusher, more plush, Proprietary red.  The wine ages 18 months (vs. 14 for the Prop Red) in 100% new French oak. “Aristocratic” was my first note on tasting this in March, 2012, and words like “pure”, “elegant”, “powerful”, and, most of all, “long!” all cropped up as well.  Where the 2008 Proprietary Red is luscious, this is more reserved and complex with finer structure and much deeper minerality and snap.  Just lovely stuff.

“Close in quality but perhaps not quite as exuberant and profound is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot). It boasts an opaque purple color as well as abundant notes of charcoal, scorched earth, underbrush, licorice, black currants and blackberries. Slightly more evolved than the 2007, it is nearly that wine’s equal in terms of depth, richness and overall appeal. Seamless, juicy and deep, offering expansive black raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a suave floral pastille quality. “The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is flat out gorgeous. Meaty and rich, with floral-tinged notes of blackberry, raspberry, melted licorice, ground garrigue and roasted meats, this full-bodied, rich and decadent effort has perfect integration of its fruit, acidity and tannin, with no hard edges and building richness. One of Barolo's most legendary wines, Percristina is fashioned by the legendary Dominico Clerico from old vines in the Mosconi cru and aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barriques.  After bottling, Clerico holds the wine in a temperature controlled room dedicated entirely to Percristina until he feels it is at the opening of its long drinking window.  Fans of wines from Scavino, La Spinetta, and Vietti will love the lush, rich, texture here and the dark, powerful, fruit.  Yes, it shows some oak today, but let it rest for a decade and all will be very, very, well.

This has been a bit controversial among critics, with opinions breaking in unexpected ways.  James Suckling - for whom oak on Barolo is never a problem - gave it a middling 93 point rating.  Antonio Galloni - open to a wide range of Barolo styles - thought it magnificent when first bottles (94 points) but worried that the wine seemed too delicate when re-tasting in 2013 (91 points).  And, Steve Tanzer - never a fan of oak on Nebbiolo - loved it right after bottling (94 points) and gushed even more (97+ points) when re-tasting it two years later - making Percristina his wine of the vintage!

We have only 5 six packs to offer (after I take my allocation!), and I won't pull a cork on one of my bottles for at least another 5 years.  But Dominico told me he loves this wine and thinks it will be one of his better Percristina's ever, so I'm feeling pretty confident I'll be happy with it - and that you will be, too.  Here are the three most recent reviews from Suckling, Galloni, and Tanzer:

"The 2005 Barolo Percristina boasts a serious core of fruit, especially within the context of the year. Racy and ripe, the 2005 caresses the palate with expressive aromas and flavors. Since it was first bottled, the 2005 has become much more delicate, polished and refined from a textural standpoint, but it has also lost some of its pure excitement and freshness, especially in the fruit."  Antonio Galloni 91 points

"Good full red. Distinctly balsamic aromas of brown spices, tobacco, pepper, camphor and star anise. Thick on entry, then bright and sharply delineated in the mid-palate, with great energy and tactile minerality. This compellingly solid, chewy, classic Barolo finishes with great tannic force and grip and is virtually impossible to spit. An explosively long Barolo that will need long aging."  Steve Tanzer 97+ points

Even better in big bottle! As always, there’s something a bit feminine about this Brunello created by a remarkable trio of Italian women, but in 2010 it’s a bit more voluptuous than in the past.  The aromas are compelling and sultry, dark and spicy, while the palate shows a plush sexiness.  At this early point in development, it’s still pretty stern and brooding, but – as Wine Advocate notes – it gets much friendlier and more approachable with air.  You’ll get 15 years of pleasure from this powerful wine with everything from grilled Bistecca alla Fiorentina to roasted lamb or stews.

“Incredible aromatics here with smoked meat, toffee, light prune, dried cherry, and dried flower. Full body, soft and velvety tannins and a long, sexy finish. Wonderful depth and intensity. Big wine from a little producer. Try in 2017.”  James Suckling 94 points

“The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows smooth lines and a curvaceous figure. Soft aromas of cherry, Spanish cedar, licorice, dried rosemary and roasted almond rise from the bouquet. I tried this wine during two phases, once shortly after the bottle was opened and a second time 24 hours later. The evolution and softening of the wine was remarkable and is very encouraging in terms of its potential longevity. Yet, you never lose sight of that characteristic Sangiovese tartness and freshness.
