Dom Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Les Suchots 2011 Product #28804 (In Stock)
Dom Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Les Suchots 2011 Dom Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Les Suchots 2011

“Perhaps the greatest wine to issue from this estate, the Suchots sits on deep and heavy clay at 270 meters altitude with an east-southeast exposure.  Chezeaux owns a bit more than one-third of a hectare in this elite lieu-dit which sits opposite Richebourg and Romanée Saint Vivant.”  Importer Neal Rosenthal

“The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots comes across as a bit understated in this vintage. The customary textural finesse is present, but there is a bit less density in the fruit. Dark red stone fruits, spices, menthol and wild flowers are layered into the impeccable, generous finish.  Drink 2016-2031.”  Antonio Galloni 93 points

Relic Cabernet Franc The Prior 2012 Product #30170 (In Stock)
Relic Cabernet Franc The Prior 2012 Relic Cabernet Franc The Prior 2012

375 cases made; 3 available.  As Robert Parker said, "this is a killer example of this varietal, which can do wonders in selected micro-climates in Napa."  In this case, rugged Stagecoach Vineyard (75%) and Calistoga's Frediani Vineyards give this fantastic purity and aromatics to go with the plush palate.  18% Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and 4% Petit Verdot (both from Stagecoach) layers on another dose of complexity.  Fabulous stuff.

“An absolutely profound wine is the 2012 Cabernet Franc The Prior. I don’t know what source Mike Hirby used for his Cabernet Franc, but this is a killer example of this varietal, which can do wonders in selected micro-climates in Napa. Forest floor, blueberry, black raspberry and acacia flowers all swirl from the glass in the complex aromatics offered up. It’s lovely texture, which is full-bodied, but light on its feet has produced a rather sublime example of Cabernet Franc that is supple, round, beautifully textured and quite pure with a positive finish. Drink it over the next decade.”Wine Advocate 95 points

Vietti Barolo Brunate 2008 Product #25830 (In Stock)
Vietti Barolo Brunate 2008 Vietti Barolo Brunate 2008

1 Bottle Available

"The 2008 Barolo Brunate flows onto the palate with layers of dark fruit, spices, menthol and licorice. It is an unusually plush, generous wine for the year, endowed with tons of grace and sheer depth. This is a fabulous, layered Brunate that should drink well with a few more years in the bottle. Layers of sweet, perfumed fruit, rose petals and spices build effortlessly to the gracious, elegant finish. The Brunate is brooding and tannic, but the wine softens a bit with air. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028"Wine Advocate 93 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Product #26601 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!

Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012 Product #28889 (In Stock)
Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012 Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012

As always, one of the most impressive wines in all of Chateauneuf, this marries the intense ripeness of old-vine Grenache to the earthy complexity and power of Mourvedre.  Only 70 cases made and about half that imported to the USA.  Probably the most pure power you’ll find in any Chateauneuf of the vintage.

“Opaque ruby. Expressive cherry compote, incense and licorice aromas are complemented by potpourri, vanilla and smoky minerals. Seamless, juicy and deep, offering expansive black raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a suave floral pastille quality. Shows impressive density with zero excess weight, finishing sweet, broad and very long. Potentially one of the wines of the vintage.”International Wine Cellar 93-95 points

“The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is flat out gorgeous. Meaty and rich, with floral-tinged notes of blackberry, raspberry, melted licorice, ground garrigue and roasted meats, this full-bodied, rich and decadent effort has perfect integration of its fruit, acidity and tannin, with no hard edges and building richness. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and have upward of two decades of longevity. Drink 2016-2032.” Wine Advocate 94-97+ points

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012 Product #29038 (In Stock)
Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs 2012

A classic; rich and powerful.  Best from 2017-2027.

“Slightly reduced aromas of roasted black raspberry, licorice and violet. A sweet, fine-grained fruit bomb in the mouth, offering more definition and verve than the Boudots to its blackberry and cassis flavors. Creamy-sweet but with nicely integrated acidity and ripe, fine-grained tannins giving the wine shape and energy. This wine was made entirely from vines planted in 1981 as the Meuniers pulled up the oldest vines for replanting before the 2012 season.” International Wine Cellar 91-93 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Chaboeufs has a very well defined, slightly metallic bouquet that is vigorous and focused. The palate is very silky and more refined than the Les Boudots. Despite some reduction this seems to have more class and finesse, serving as a decent Nuits Saint Georges without the bells and whistles.” Wine Advocate 92-94 points

“The superb Les Chaboeufs 1er Cru exhibits a dark red fruit nose with hints of herbs and loam. It boasts outstanding floral and dark berry fruit flavor and has an elegant mouth feel with, soft round tannins and a long finish. Drink in 2017 for an additional 10 years minimum.”i-Wine Review 93 points

Oddero Barolo Brunate 2010 Product #29254 (In Stock)
Oddero Barolo Brunate 2010 Oddero Barolo Brunate 2010

From a tiny, 1 acre, plot in La Mora's outstanding Brunate vineyard, this delivers much more concentration and intensity than Oddero's fine 2010 Normale.  The 50-60 year-old vines were hand harvested in early October, manually destemmed, and given a warm fermentation and 25 day maceration.  Aging in smaller, 20 hectoliter, casks helped soften Brunate's massive structure a bit, but this still needs at least 10 years in cellar to really shine.

“Underbrush, intense rose petal, rosemary, grilled herbs and red berry scents leap from the glass. Polished and almost pulsating with energy, the palate displays succulent red cherry, sage, leather, cinnamon and white pepper alongside supple tannins and vibrant acidity. Drink after 2020 for more complexity.”Wine Enthusiast 95 points

“Expressive and forward, offering cherry, tar, menthol and spice accents. The tannins are dense and grippy, but this finds equilibrium in the end. Sweet at the core, but needs time to fully emerge. Best from 2018 through 2032.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Product #28944 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010

Shirley Roy never meant to make two wines from her 20 or so acre estate in a crook of Napa’s Soda Canyon.  But, winemaker Philippe Melka felt the vineyard spoke with two voices – one aristocratic and intense, the other softer, more plush and mellow.  Prop Red is the second of those voices, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.  After dropping half her crop in 2010, Shirley was rewarded with this ripe and welcoming red that’s already delicious and sure to improve for years.  A bit of a cross between the black-fruited 2008 and the finer, more detailed, 2009.

“Roy’s 2010 Proprietary Red has a little more delineation and nuance than the 2009. Freshly cut flowers, violets, super ripe dark fruit, mocha, espresso, chocolate, plums, cassis and black currants all jump from the glass in this opulent full-bodied huge wine. Layers of fruit continue to build to the creamy, expressive finish.  Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”  Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blueberry, coffee, mocha, truffle and chocolate show a slightly porty quality. Fat, smooth and lush in the mouth, offering immediate accessibility. The truffley element carries through on the palate. This nicely rich, layered blend finishes with dusty tannins and good length.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

Beaulieu Vineyards George De Latour Private Rsv 2012 Product #29923 (In Stock)
Beaulieu Vineyards George De Latour Private Rsv 2012 Beaulieu Vineyards George De Latour Private Rsv 2012

When André Tchelistcheff arrived at BV in 1938, he tasted a small lot of the 1936 vintage that the Latour family was holding back for their own pleasure – a wine they called Private Reserve.  He insisted that it be released and later named it for the winery founder, Georges de Latour, and it soon became America’s most important Cabernet Sauvignon.  Today, made in a special winery created just for this wine and drawn from the heart of the BV #1 and #2 vineyards, Private Reserve is making its claim for greatness once again. You’ll find showier high-end Napa Cabs these days, but few that so perfectly combine the rich, ripe, fruit and dense concentration of Napa’s 2012 harvest with clarity of flavors and pure, sweet, tannins on the long finish. A stunner.

"The deep ruby/purple-colored 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is BV’s flagship wine. It boasts sweet notes of charcoal, burning embers, vanillin, tar and copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In keeping with this generously endowed vintage, the wine is supple, full-bodied, multidimensional and opulent. It will drink beautifully young and last for 20-25 years."Wine Advocate 94 points

Relic Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact 2012 Product #30169 (In Stock)
Relic Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact 2012 Relic Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact 2012

343 cases made; 5 available.  Always Mike Hirby's top wine, the 2012 Artefact Cabernet is simply stunning in 2012.  It's a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot from three great vineyards.  About 75% of the fruit comes from Kenefick Ranch, just next door to Araujo's famous Eisele vineyard in Calistoga. The remainder of the Cabernet comes from Corona Vineyard in Oakville, adding structure and minerality to Kefefick's plush fruit.  Finally, the Petit Verdot is from the legendary Stagecoach Vineyard overlooking Soda Canyon.  Rich, powerful, complex, and very limited.

“An outstanding wine is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact, which comes primarily from the Kenefick Ranch in Northern Napa. Dense blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with camphor, charcoal embers and spice box are all present in this long, deep, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon that is supple enough to be drunk now, or cellared for 10 or 15 years.”Wine Advocate 94 points

Ch Le Bon Pasteur Pomerol 2010 Product #30678 (In Stock)
Ch Le Bon Pasteur Pomerol 2010 Ch Le Bon Pasteur Pomerol 2010

A magnificent Pomerol that will certainly develop for 20 years more, but is already delicious with a 1 hour decant.

"A fleshy, full-throttle wine with lots of mocha, kirsch, mulberry, and plum, their 2010 displays a smorgasbord of aromas, a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity, density and even a hint of lead pencil shavings and subtle toasty oak. If you want to understand the genius of the Rollands, there is no better example than looking at their own wine from this property in Pomerol. The tannins are present, but not that significant, thus I tend to think the wine will come into its own in 4-5 years and last for 20 or more."Wine Advocate 95 points

Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 1982 Product #27906 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 1982 Quinta Dona Matilde Porto Colheita 1982

You’ve only got a little while to grab some of this stunning, 30 year-old Port, because there are only 2 cases to go around – and it’s taking all of my willpower not to take it all home myself! A Tawny-style port, all from the 1982 vintage, that aged in barrel until being bottled in late 2013.  The dominant theme here is caramel coated walnut with variations ranging from candied orange peel to crystalized rose petal, sugar-dusted dried currant, rich toffee, sweet spice and more.  Every sip rings in a new tune.  Even with all the richness, this glides across your palate weightlessly and the sweet, nutty, finish clings in your mouth endlessly.  Amazing wine to share (or hoard for yourself!).

Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011 Product #29355 (In Stock)
Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2011

Italy's first 100% Sangiovese super-Tuscan red remains one of the very, very, best.  Limited.

"A vivid, beautiful wine, the 2011 Pergole Torte is superb. Warm, early-maturing harvests often attenuate the differences between sites, but not here. The old vines weathered the heat better, resulting in a wine that is very much in line with the past, but with more body, amplitude and resonance. Rose petals, bright red stone fruits and mint are some of the many notes that grace the super-expressive finish.  Drink 2019-2038."  Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 97 points

"The 2011 Le Pergole Torte is a stunning expression from the heart of Tuscany and a worldwide ambassador for the Sangiovese (called Sangioveto on the label) grape. Brilliant in ruby color and buoyant in aromatic intensity, the wine is brimming with inner energy and verve. It speaks in high decibels with pristine cherry, anise seed, cola, balsam herb and almond paste. There’s a touch of softness buried within what is otherwise a tightly textured tapestry of flavors. In terms of texture, the wine is infinitely silky and long. Be patient for five years more at least. Drink 2016-2028"Wine Advocate 95 points

Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Product #27202 (In Stock)
Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Grahams Vintage 2011 Port

A classic and classy Port with good structure and plenty of length. A bit more sophisticated than Dow if not quite as powerful.

"The 2011 Graham’s comes from the five quintas that have been the source for many years (Malvedos, Tua, Vila Velha, das Lages and Vale de Malhadas). It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousao and 23% mixture of very old vines. It has a more “serious” bouquet compared to the Dow, with beguiling scents of blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and cloves. Straight-laced, very well-defined and compelling, the palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and supremely well-judged acidity. It is utterly harmonious, with a pure core of ripe black cherries, damson, marmalade, clove and spices, and the finish lingers long in the mouth."Wine Advocate 95-97 points

"Offers a decadently fruity aroma, with peppery accents to the cherry, raspberry and dark currant flavors that are lithe and juicy. Grippy tannins grace the mocha- and chocolate-infused finish. Best from 2025 through 2055."Wine Spectator 96 points

Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005 Product #30056 (In Stock)
Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005 Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005

More powerful, complex, and intense than Special Cuvee, Bollinger’s 2005 vintage Champagne is showy now and built to improve further with time.  It’s 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from 13 different Cru vineyards, about 95% Grands Cru and the rest Premier.  All of the base wines aged for about a year in barrel – high quality, used, barrels constructed at Bollinger’s own in-house cooperage – and then resting about 6 years on the lees of secondary fermentation.  Plenty of power here, but also sophistication and grace to the complex notes of honey, ginger, hazelnut, and dried fruit aromas and flavors.

"Very subtle, complete nose. Hedgerows and lift. Substantial wine that is not as tight-knit as some but is certainly attention grabbing. Drink now-2028" Jancis Robinson 17/20 points

"A powerful, structured and graceful 2005, showing deft integration of the rich, chalky underpinning, firm acidity and expansive flavors of crushed black currant, spring blossom, toasted almond, crystallized honey and preserved lemon. Offers a fine, raw silk—like mousse and a long, spiced finish. Disgorged February 2015. Drink now through 2030."Wine Spectator 94 points

Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2007 Product #25394 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2007 Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2007

Deliciously rich right now and still with plenty of development in front of it. A very limited late release from the estate just for us!

"Soda Canyon, in the southernmost part of Napa Valley, has its own specific micro-climate. This 17-acre vineyard owned by Shirley and Charles Roy was originally planted by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer, but the wine is now being made by Philippe Melka, who is fashioning very impressive reds meant for long-term aging.

The dense ruby/purple 2007 Proprietary Red, a 1,400-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot, exhibits an impressive chocolatey nose with lots of berry fruit, coffee bean, mocha, and earthy/forest floor notes. Complex and dense with silky tannins, and superb elegance combined with richness, it can be approached now, but it will be even better in 4-5 years. It should last for 20+ years."Wine Advocate 94 points

Clerico Barolo Percristina 2005 Product #29253 (In Stock)
Clerico Barolo Percristina 2005 Clerico Barolo Percristina 2005

One of Barolo's most legendary wines, Percristina is fashioned by the legendary Dominico Clerico from old vines in the Mosconi cru and aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barriques.  After bottling, Clerico holds the wine in a temperature controlled room dedicated entirely to Percristina until he feels it is at the opening of its long drinking window.  Fans of wines from Scavino, La Spinetta, and Vietti will love the lush, rich, texture here and the dark, powerful, fruit.  Yes, it shows some oak today, but let it rest for a decade and all will be very, very, well.

This has been a bit controversial among critics, with opinions breaking in unexpected ways.  James Suckling - for whom oak on Barolo is never a problem - gave it a middling 93 point rating.  Antonio Galloni - open to a wide range of Barolo styles - thought it magnificent when first bottles (94 points) but worried that the wine seemed too delicate when re-tasting in 2013 (91 points).  And, Steve Tanzer - never a fan of oak on Nebbiolo - loved it right after bottling (94 points) and gushed even more (97+ points) when re-tasting it two years later - making Percristina his wine of the vintage!

We have only 5 six packs to offer (after I take my allocation!), and I won't pull a cork on one of my bottles for at least another 5 years.  But Dominico told me he loves this wine and thinks it will be one of his better Percristina's ever, so I'm feeling pretty confident I'll be happy with it - and that you will be, too.  Here are the three most recent reviews from Suckling, Galloni, and Tanzer:

"Wonderful aromas of dark fruits, flowers and licorice follow to a full body, with fine tannins and a clean finish. It's drinking beautifully now. So much nut and fruit flavors at the finish. Still very young. Better in 2015."  James Suckling 93 points

"The 2005 Barolo Percristina boasts a serious core of fruit, especially within the context of the year. Racy and ripe, the 2005 caresses the palate with expressive aromas and flavors. Since it was first bottled, the 2005 has become much more delicate, polished and refined from a textural standpoint, but it has also lost some of its pure excitement and freshness, especially in the fruit."  Antonio Galloni 91 points

"Good full red. Distinctly balsamic aromas of brown spices, tobacco, pepper, camphor and star anise. Thick on entry, then bright and sharply delineated in the mid-palate, with great energy and tactile minerality. This compellingly solid, chewy, classic Barolo finishes with great tannic force and grip and is virtually impossible to spit. An explosively long Barolo that will need long aging."  Steve Tanzer 97+ points
