Finca Sobreno Especial 2009 Product #27717 (In Stock)
Finca Sobreno Especial 2009 Finca Sobreno Especial 2009

A majestic Tempranillo from Toro from 50+ year-old vines.  Rich, powerful, and redolent of traditional American oak.

"Deeply pitched aromas of blackberry, violet, smoky oak and mocha. Then sweet, broad and lush on the palate, with explosive dark berry flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and a floral nuance. Finishes with big, broad, supple tannins and superb length. This exotic, large-scaled wine shows surprising energy and focus for its heft."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2009 Finca Sobreno Reserva – Seleccion Especiale is a blend of the estate’s best vineyard (over 50 years in age) and sees half the fruit aged in 14 months in new American oak, the remainder in used oak. It has a lifted floral bouquet of dark berries, briary and dried violets that is well-defined and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry of dark cherries, balsamic, a hint of orange peel and cloves. There is good structure and focus present here, with a clean fresh, focused finish. It is very fine and very elegant for a Toro red. Drink now-2019+"Wine Advocate 93 points

Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008 Product #25046 (In Stock)
Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008 Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Fontodi was already one of Chianti’s most outstanding producers, but was frustrated by the region’s regulations that required Chianti to contain inferior grapes blended with the estate’s great Sangiovese.  The family crated Flaccianello as a “super-Tuscan’ in 1981 to show the world how great a 100% Sangiovese, oak-aged, wine could be.  One of the first all-Sangiovese super-Tuscans, and still among the best wines in all of Tuscany.

“The pureness of fruit is so intense here. It’s also so clean and beautiful. The wine shows fabulous aromas of flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. It’s full-bodied, with chocolate, licorice, and plums. The texture is very velvety. This is a wine in near perfect proportions.”  James Suckling 97 Points.

Ch Beaucastel Chneuf Du Pape 2010 Product #26496 (In Stock)
Ch Beaucastel Chneuf Du Pape 2010 Ch Beaucastel Chneuf Du Pape 2010

Number 8 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2013! - VERY limited.

"Interestingly enough, even though many of the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections from the southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do."Wine Advocate 95 points

"Dark, dense and very closed now, this has a tremendous core of crushed plum, linzer torte and blackberry confiture waiting in reserve. Ample singed cedar and mesquite, warm paving stone and black tea notes lurk in the background and glide through the finish. Features serious grip, but wonderful integration. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2035."Wine Spectator 96 points

Ch Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2010 Product #26469 (In Stock)
Ch Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2010 Ch Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2010

Complex and very, very, long.

"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc (80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc vinified in tank) exhibits very good acidity along with a lighter, more delicate style than previous vintages (malolactic is now totally blocked), and restrained orange peel, tangerine oil, white peach, honeysuckle and candle wax notes. This medium to full-bodied, zesty, fresh wine is still backward and unevolved, so cellar it for 1-2 years and drink it over the following 10+."Wine Advocate 90 points

"Juicy up front, with lively star fruit, peach and yellow apple fruit, this turns plush and languid, with alluring grilled hazelnut, sweetened butter and warm piecrust notes filling in on the finish. Sneakily long, thanks to the nicely integrated acidity. Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Picardan, Clairette and Bourboulenc. Drink now through 2015."Wine Spectator 93 points

"A classic Puligny nose is both fresh and ripe with citrus, floral and white-fleshed fruit aromas where there is added nuance in the form of smoke and menthol hints. There is a lovely sense of refinement and energy to the silky and pure middle weight flavors that possess fine precision as well as faultless balance on the lingering finish. Good stuff for a villages level effort."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

"The 2010 Puligny-Montrachet caresses the palate with soft, expressive fruit. This beautiful, open Puligny villages will delight readers pretty much upon release. Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Product #24154 (In Stock)
Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006 Castello Dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2006

Rampolla is one of the best estates in Tuscany you’ve never heard of – and d’Alceo is their top wine.  The 2006 released at $275 per bottle; clearly, we’re doing a little better than that.

"Castello dei Rampolla is one of the benchmark properties in Tuscany, and for good reason. At their finest, these are some of the most elegant, luscious wines readers will come across. The 2006 D’Alceo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is a much tighter-wound wine than the Sammarco but it also seems to be holding back a lot more sheer density in reserve. Full-bodied, rich and monstrously tannic at this stage, it doesn’t taste too different than it did when I first sampled it from tank in November 2006! The wine possesses dazzling inner perfume, refined tannins that need time to emerge and exceptional overall balance. It is a fabulous effort from Rampolla. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031."Wine Advocate 96 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Product #24541 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006

In January 2011, a group of us sat around a table over a long dinner in Puligny-Montrachet blind tasting Burgundies at virtually every level imaginable.  In the middle of a flight of Grand Cru reds from some of Burgundy’s biggest names, a decanter of this made its appearance.  Immediately, there was much snorting, sighing, and delight everywhere, and someone looked at Pascal Maillard, sitting to my left, and said, “Pascal, I think this could be your Corton-Renardes.”  Pascal’s eyebrows shot up and he snorted, “This is not my wine.  My wine is not this good.”  Another sniff and sip:  “If this is my wine, I’m not charging enough!”

The wine was, of course, Pascal’s 2006 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, and it was easily the red  wine of the night.  Pascal thought it was Clos Vougeot from high on the hill, and there’s something to that comparison.  The aromas are super lush and generious, full of sweet black cherry, blood orange, browned shitake mushroom, and smoky stones.  In the mouth its rich and full; dark cherry, spiced raspberry, coffee, and smoked meat flavors all appear along with a feral note that marks this as Corton-Renardes.  Very long in the mouth, the sweet spiced fruit gains support from super ripe, sweet, tannin and a little raspberry juice lingers on the finish.  Pascal does, in fact, charge too little for a wine of this quality, so enjoy it before he comes to his senses!

Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2008 Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2008

"Sandrone’s 2008 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of breathtaking textural finesse and elegance. Nothing really stands out, so phenomenal is the wine’s balance and sense of harmony. This is the kind of wine that is easy to overlook because it doesn’t ask for attention and isn’t showy. Instead, everything is simply in the right place. The finest, most silky of tannins support a core of sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which are woven together with total refinement. The eternal, nuanced finish bodes very well for the future. This is a dazzling effort from Luciano and Luca Sandrone."Wine Advocate 97 points

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!

Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Product #27202 (In Stock)
Grahams Vintage 2011 Port Grahams Vintage 2011 Port

A classic and classy Port with good structure and plenty of length. A bit more sophisticated than Dow if not quite as powerful.

"The 2011 Graham’s comes from the five quintas that have been the source for many years (Malvedos, Tua, Vila Velha, das Lages and Vale de Malhadas). It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousao and 23% mixture of very old vines. It has a more “serious” bouquet compared to the Dow, with beguiling scents of blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and cloves. Straight-laced, very well-defined and compelling, the palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and supremely well-judged acidity. It is utterly harmonious, with a pure core of ripe black cherries, damson, marmalade, clove and spices, and the finish lingers long in the mouth."Wine Advocate 95-97 points

"Offers a decadently fruity aroma, with peppery accents to the cherry, raspberry and dark currant flavors that are lithe and juicy. Grippy tannins grace the mocha- and chocolate-infused finish. Best from 2025 through 2055."Wine Spectator 96 points

Guillon Gevry-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnets 2000 Product #10952 (In Stock)

This was a difficult vintage.  The vines set a big crop of big bunches of big, thin-skinned, berries.  Humid weather made rot a constant challenge, ripening went slowly, and then it rained late.  Like all top growers, Jean Michel ended up leaving a large portion of his fruit on the ground in the vineyard, threw away more on the sorting table, and then had to manage fermentations carefully to extract what the grapes had to offer without overwhelming the gentle fruit with hard tannin.

And now, 13 years later, it’s blindingly obvious that he was successful.  No, it’s not a “great” wine, but it’s certainly utterly charming and pretty, with gentle red berry fruit framed by notes of coffee, fresh earth, and iron.  Lovely to sniff and delicious to drink, and soft and easy on the finish where just enough tannin for food remains.  A delicious, mature, red Burgundy to enjoy now – 2017 or so.

"Concentrated cherry and blueberry aromas, with accents of potpourri and pungent Moroccan spices. Deep dark fruit flavors possess superb energy and vivacity, with fresh acidity adding bite and lift. The clinging finish shows uncommon intensity, with mounting sweetness and sneaky, harmonious tannins. Here's a wine that transcends the vintage."International Wine Cellar 92-94 points

"This cuvee comes from four parcels of the estate’s oldest vines, and tends to be 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah. The Grenache is always aged in foudre and the other cepages aged in small oak. The three terroirs include Les Soumades (primarily red clay soils), La Crau, old vines near Chateau Beaucastel, and the terroir after which this estate is named, Janasse, which is primarily clay and limestone covered by the thick carpet of stones known as the galets roules. Achieving 16.5% natural alcohol in 2011 was no easy task, but this wine is not the least bit hot. Full-bodied, intense and opulent, it may be the wine of the vintage, not only in Chateauneuf du Pape, but in all of southern France. This amazing effort transcends the vintage. It is a tribute to the extraordinary viticultural and winemaking perfection/obsession of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon and their father. This black/purple-hued 2011 exhibits lots of cassis, floral, black raspberry and kirsch characteristics as well as potential longevity of 10-15 years or long."Wine Advocate 93-95 points

Antinori Tignanello 2010 Product #27937 (In Stock)

"Antinori's 2010 Tignanello is stunning, as it has been since I started tasting the component wines in 2011. Firm yet sweet, silky tannins form the backbone for this gorgeous, vivid wine. Dark red cherries, plums, cloves, mint and sage inform a Tignanello that impresses for its delineation, nuance and power. Clean, saline notes support the mineral-drenched finish. The 2010 isn't huge, but rather is a vertical wine endowed with tremendous energy and vibrancy. I can't remember a Tignanello with this much crystalline tension and pure energy. Simply put, the 2010 Tignanello is a magnificent, towering wine from Antinori."  Antonio Galloni 96 points

"Humming with energy and life from the very moment you put your nose in the glass, Marchesi Antinori’s 2010 Tignanello shows magnificent aromatic layering and an enormous capacity to peel back and reveal itself in beautiful slow motion. This is an articulate wine with a long story to tell about the quality of its profound 2010 fruit. This Tignanello has the elegance of 2004 and the structure of 2007. A brief note on the structure: The mouthfeel here is not broad and big. Instead, it shows a sharp and elegantly streamlined feel with impressive persistency. Compared to 2009, the Sangiovese component is slightly higher with 80% of the noble Tuscan variety followed by 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.
