Tres Sabores Zinfandel Rutherford Estate 2011 Tres Sabores Zinfandel Rutherford Estate 2011

Just 500 cases made of this luscious Zinfandel grown organically in the heart of Napa's Rutherford Bench.  And while Rutherford is famous for Cab, it turns out Zin does pretty well here too!

Big aromas of black and red berries with accents of cracked pepper and spice.  Ripe and zesty in the mouth with more "Zinny" fruit, black and white pepper, and a touch of bramble wood.  Classy oak aromas and flavors lend more complexity in this big, but nicely balanced, Zinfandel for solo sipping or richly flavored foods.

Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012 Product #27904 (In Stock)
Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012 Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012

Chappellet has been turning out benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from its vineyards high on Prichard Hill for 40 years now, but it's their Napa Valley Chardonnay that's won the most fans here over the years.  The 2012 is made by blending fruit from cool vineyards near San Pablo Bay, the Napa side of Carneros, and a little from Oak Knoll just above Carneros.  It's barrel fermented and aged on the lees for creamy richness, but only one-third sees new wood and a bit more than half goes through malolactic fermentation (so the wine stays crisp and fresh).

California's 2012 harvest is shaping up to be an outstanding vintage, and Chardonnay's like this one show you why. The aromas are concentrated and generous, with scents of orange zest, pear, apple, lemon drop and pretty accents of baking spice and vanilla from the oak.  In the mouth, it delivers a lush mouthfull of peach and apple fruit with a good dose of lemon custard, creme fraiche, and sweet spice.  The finish is clean, bright, and focused with nice apple-like acidity and notes of toast and ginger lingering nicely.  This will actually flesh out and get even better over the next few years, although there's certainly no reason to not enjoy it right now!  Steal of a price, too.

Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 Product #28279 (In Stock)
Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009

This 2009 Barbaresco is so delicious right now that it will be hard to wait until its full flowering in 5 years or so.  Good reason to grab more than a few bottles now!  A fantastic “normale” Barbaresco at a stellar price.

"Produttori del Barbaresco is like that long-lost friend who always picks up a lively conversation no matter how many years have passed since your last meeting. It’s the ultimate fallback wine: It’s never intimidating or awkward. It’s always a pleasure to drink. The 2009 Barbaresco shows personality and good cheer with a good dose of dried fruit and savory spice. There are some elements that make the wine seem more aged than it really is. Cured meat and old leather emerge. But then the wine suddenly surprises you with an entourage of Nebbiolo-based tones like dried mint and licorice that tell you it still has loads of life within. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.”Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright cherry, strawberry, floral, licorice and herbal aromas and flavors highlight this fragrant, elegant red, which is silky and pure, with fine ripe tannins for support. Shows excellent length, with an aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2015 through 2028.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Castello Di Bolgheri Superiore 2009 Product #28651 (In Stock)
Castello Di Bolgheri Superiore 2009 Castello Di Bolgheri Superiore 2009

The rare “Castello” named Italian winery that actually sits inside a castle – in this case a 16th Century monument built by the Counts of Gherardesca (the family that still owns the property today).  The vineyards lie in the heart of Bolgheri, next-door to founding Super-Tuscan Sassicaia and around the corner from Ornellaia.  This, the estate’s top wine, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot aged for about 16 months in French oak (20% new).  It’s the rare Bolgheri blend that’s as admired in Italy (it earned the coveted Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso) as it is by International critics.  And, it’s delicious right now even though it will improve for a decade more.  At these prices, it’s a do not miss deal.

“I like the aromas of walnuts and blackberries with hints of coffee beans. Full body, with soft and velvety tannins and a delicious sweet berry aftertaste. Delicious now. But will improve with age in the bottle.”  James Suckling 93 points

“The sweet black currant and black cherry fruit flavors are framed by cedar, licorice and saline mineral elements in this rich, supple red. Displays plenty of structure, with the firm tannins buried by ample flesh. Fine length. Best from 2014 through 2024. 1,650 cases made.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Ransom Vermouth Dry Nv Product #27503 (In Stock)
Ransom Vermouth Dry Nv Ransom Vermouth Dry Nv

Oregon's Ransom brings us this unique Vermouth made with Pinot and a mix of other aromatic white varietals.  On the nose, it's got a little more ginger and vanilla character than most other dry Vermouths we've tried.  On the palate, that ginger kick continues, and it's got a tart, snappy finish that comes out even more when mixed with a little fizzy water.  A great addition to fall cocktails!

Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2012 Product #29159 (In Stock)
Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2012 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2012

Another great vintage here for this very "New World" Spanish Garnacha.

"Expressive aromas of cherry compote, blueberry, lavender and peppery spices. Plush, pliant, round and seamless on the palate, offering smoky blueberry, mineral and dark chocolate flavors complicated by suggestions of candied flowers and licorice. Finishes long and sweet, with soft tannins and repeating spiciness. There's a lot of wine here for the money."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"Bodegas Alto Moncayo started in 2001 as a collaboration between importer Jorge Ordoñez, American importer Dan Phillips, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and others. Located near the town of Borja, the 210 acres of vineyards are head-pruned, old Grenache vines planted at 3,000 feet above sea level in poorly nourished soils of slate, clay, chalk and quartzite. They make a number of cuvées, the most famous being the more expensive Alto Moncayo and the Aquilon. Their inexpensive offering is the 2012 Veraton, a 100% Grenache aged in 60% new French and 40% American oak for 17 months before being bottled without filtration. It is a powerful, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal red boasting a dense purple color, and a sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, lavender, licorice and earth notes intermixed with a touch of new oak. Stylistically, this is a modern, massively intense, rich wine that over-delivers in many ways. However, it is not for consumers looking for shy, restrained and delicate wines. It should drink well for a decade."Wine Advocate 93 points

Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2009 Product #28042 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2009 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2009

An utterly compelling Barolo from 30-50 year old vines, aged 80% in classic large cask and 20% in small barrel (used) for polish and softness.  Blended from 5 top vineyards in Barolo, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello, this outshines many much higher priced 2009 Barolo.  It will age easily for a decade+, but it's in the window right now with rich foods or truffles.

"Damilano's 2009 Barolo Lecinquevigne boasts serious depth and intensity. Dark cherry, plum, spices, mocha, menthol, tar and licorice meld together in a rich, powerful, intense entry-level wine. This is a fabulous effort for the year. The 2009 shows great intensity of color and fruit, with beautifully balanced, harmonious tannins. All in all, this is a terrific showing."  Antonio Galloni 91 points

"Moderately saturated medium red. Inviting aromas of strawberry, espresso, mocha, earth and mellow oak. Supple, lush and seamless, with spicy red berry flavors complicated by sexy truffley underbrush. Mellow and attractive Barolo with impressive sweetness of fruit and a fine dusting of tannins that will not get in the way of early enjoyment."International Wine Cellar 91 points

Dom Michel Sarrazin Mercurey La Perriere 2012 Product #28815 (In Stock)
Dom Michel Sarrazin Mercurey La Perriere 2012 Dom Michel Sarrazin Mercurey La Perriere 2012

A winner of a red Burgundy that delivers the perfect blend of luscious Pinot Noir fruit, toasty oak, and authentic Burgundy earthy minerality.  The Sarrazin brothers grow this in the fine La Perrriere vineyard, just next to the 1er Cru Le Clos L'Eveque, prick it ripe, and give it a luxurious stay in 75% new French oak.  In 2012, it's wonderfully rich and concentrated, but never rough or rugged and has absorbed the wood beautifully. Aromas and flavors of sweet red cherry, red plum, and raspberry with accents of crushed violet and smoke. The fruit is nicely sweet and fresh - more than enough for any Willamette Valley Pinot drinker - but with a touch of Burgundy's own iron ore and warm stone minerality.  You'll love how the fruit gets more sweet and fresh with air without losing the focus of the firm finish. A classy but easy-to-drink Burgundy that shines at table or for a crowd.

"The 2012 Mercurey La Perriere Village displays perfumed red cherry and plum aromas. On the palate it has excellent depth of flavor and layered flavors with a firm tannic finish. This wine should provide drinking pleasure until 2019 or longer."  i-Wine Review 90+ points

Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009 Product #28764 (In Stock)
Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009 Vina Sastre Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2009

Rock solid, drinkable, Ribera.  You can age it a bit if you like, but no need to wait for pleasure.

"Opaque ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense and cola, along with a sexy floral nuance and a touch of cracked pepper. Juicy, sweet and expansive, offering vibrant cherry and blackberry flavors and a velvety texture. Finishes with impressive clarity and lift, leaving a candied violet note behind."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The Crianzas are raised in new American oak for around 14 months and Jesus explained that the grapes were cooled to 6 degrees Centigrade for the 2009 Vina Sastre Crianza. It offers a fragrant, floral bouquet of kirsch, loganberry and cranberry, with fine definition and well-integrated oak. There is a touch of chalk dust that emerges after a few moments in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, crisp acidity and a superb citric freshness on the finish: hints of orange peel and tangerine lingering on the aftertaste. This is an understated yet paradoxically flavorsome Crianza. Drink 2013-2019."Wine Advocate 92 points

Lindes de Remelluri Rioja Vinedos de San Vicente 2010 Product #28765 (In Stock)
Lindes de Remelluri Rioja Vinedos de San Vicente 2010 Lindes de Remelluri Rioja Vinedos de San Vicente 2010

A modern style Rioja, ripe and lush, but with plenty of structure and good balance. A fine choice for top-end steak or rich roasts or stews.

"Heady aromas of boysenberry, cassis, fennel and pipe tobacco, with a sexy vanilla undertone. Lush, velvety and sweet in the mouth, with sexy flavors of black and blue fruit preserves, licorice and floral pastilles. A fleshy, powerful but shockingly energetic Rioja, with supple tannins framing a long, sweet finish."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2010 Lindes de Remelluri Vinedos de San Vicente is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Malvasia purchased from a number of vine growers from San Vicente de la Sonsierra. In the past these grapes were blended with the ones grown on the Remelluri estate vineyards. The 2010 is very aromatic, more fruit forward, with some grainy tannins, slightly more rustic than the one produced with grapes purchased in Labastida. The oak is perfectly folded into the nose and palate of the wine, which remains very fresh and approachable. 60,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2015-2020."Wine Advocate 91 points

Ch Beaucastel Coudoulet De Beaucastel Rouge 2012 Product #28808 (In Stock)
Ch Beaucastel Coudoulet De Beaucastel Rouge 2012 Ch Beaucastel Coudoulet De Beaucastel Rouge 2012

From the historic Coudoulet vineyard just across the A7 Autoroute from Chateau Beaucastel’s famous Chateauneuf du Pape vineyard, this “Baby Beaucastel” delivers plenty of Chateauneuf “Pop!” at a great, Cotes du Rhone, price. Delicious now, but built to gain complexity and layers of depth over the next 6-10 years in cellar.

"Youthful purple. Spicy, highly perfumed dark berry and Indian spice scents show very good clarity and pick up a smoky nuance with air. Densely packed but lithe too, with juicy black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of lavender adding lift. Dusty tannins shape the finish, which clings with impressive tenacity and subtle spiciness. According to Marc Perrin, the vines that provide the fruit for this wine are now over 80 years old."International Wine Cellar 90-92 points

"Starting the reds, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel looks to be an outstanding example of this cuvee. Showing plenty of black cherry, mineral, cracked pepper and underbrush, it is medium-bodied, possesses great acidity, and gains in both richness and depth in the glass. While most Cotes du Rhones drink best in their first 4-5 years of life, this cuvee can age well past a decade. Drink now-2022.

Covering a full 175 acres in Chateauneuf du Pape, with significant holdings throughout the Southern Rhone (mostly vinified at and released under their Famille Perrin brand), Chateau De Beaucastel is a benchmark estate that excels at all price points. Looking at the wines reviewed here, 2011 is surprisingly strong (especially for the Chateauneufs) and with their perfumed aromatics and supple textures, they show a lot of similarities to the 2009s. The 2012s as a whole show more freshness and purity, with good concentration, and should require more bottle age to come around. Both vintages are worth seeking out. Looking at the 2011s across the board, all of which were in bottle, it appears to be a strong vintage here. While the vintage suffered due to uneven ripening in the Grenache, it was actually a solid vintage for Mourvedre and this shows, particularly in the Chateauneufs."Wine Advocate 90-92 points

Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008 Product #28085 (In Stock)
Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008 Terredora Di Paolo Taurasi 2008

Tre Bicchieri 2014!  Taurasi is often called “The Barolo of the South,” not because its grape – Aglianico – tastes like Nebbiolo, but because it delivers powerful, ageworthy, wines that deliver big aromatics and fruit with intense structures that meld perfectly with food.  The trick to making a great Taurasi is to mellow Aglianico’s fierce, somewhat rustic, tannins without overwhelming the grape’s character with wood.  And that’s exactly what’s happened here.

Ripe, hand-harvested, grapes are fermented in steel and then go into small French oak barrels (mostly used) for 18 months.  To allow more time for the wine to soften without adding overt oak flavors, the wine then moves to larger, aged, oak barrels for another year and then rests in bottle for up to a year more.  The result is a wine that still has plenty of cellar potential and power, but that you can also enjoy right now with roasted meat, mature cheeses, or – my favorite – any dish laced with roasted peppers and olives.

“Lots of spicy, dried fruit and black pepper character. Full body, round and chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Traditional-style Taurasi. Better in a year or two when the tannins soften.”  James Suckling 93 points

Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Grands Chaillots 2011 Product #28184 (In Stock)
Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Grands Chaillots 2011 Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Grands Chaillots 2011

Try this powerful, impressive, Bourgogne rouge from vineyards immediately in front of the soon-to-be Grand Cru of St. Georges in Nuits.  Organically farmed and made with the same care and attention Thibault lavishes on his 1er and Grand Crus, it needs air or a few years to really show.  Then it's dark and rich with dusky fruit, velvety tannins, and focused minerality and acids.  Rare to find this kind of richness, energy, and length all together in Bourgogne.  But, Thibault is emerging as one of the two or three truly great winemakers in Nuits St. George (as well as Moulin-a-Vent!) and that talent shines through here.

"There is lovely energy and detail to the very supple and saline-infused flavors that possess a touch of rusticity on the agreeably dry and clean finish."Allen Meadows 85-87 points

The most impressive vintage for Saldo yet!  As always, mainly Zinfndel (85%) plus Petite Sirah (9%) and a dash Syrah from top vineyards all across California.  In this great Zinfandel vintage, there's as much ripe flavor as ever - luscious dark  raspberry, boysenberry, blackberry fruit - and plenty of cracked pepper, dark chocolate and roasted coffee and spice accents. But, there's a touch more focus, precision and class here than you'd expect and even as the fruit and spice flavors gush through the wine's finish, things stay poised and even refreshing.  Fun to sip and a great match for big BBQ flavors!

Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010 Product #28441 (In Stock)
Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010 Billo Desnivell Priorat Negre 2010

An outstanding example of what happens when a talented young winemaker - Blai Ferré i Just – works fruit from old vines – 80+ year-old Garnacha Peluda – in a fine vintage like 2010.  First, the utterly compelling aromas:  savory soy and herb-rubbed roasted meat notes intermingle with scents of crushed black raspberry, black plum, spice, vanilla, and warm stones.  In the mouth, there’s an exciting interplay between the wine’s size and power vs. it’s silky texture and almost Pinot-like purity and poise.  The perfectly ripe “Hairy Grenache” and minerally Carignan (20%) combine to deliver a uniquely Priorat flavor profile of inky blackberry, boysenberry, lavender, soy, and roasted meats with a lovely note of sweet spice and crushed slate minerality.   The dusty mineral that peaked out of the aromas and flavors comes to the fore with a bang on the finish where crushed hot slate and firm, precise, tannin complement black raspberry, ink, and spice flavors that sail on and on and on.  A glorious, perfectly poised, Priorat to drink now with air and roasted meats or to cellar for 10-15 years.  This is the real deal, folks – don’t miss it!

Jules Desjourneys L'interdit (Fleurie 2008) Product #28515 (In Stock)
Jules Desjourneys L'interdit (Fleurie 2008) Jules Desjourneys L'interdit (Fleurie 2008)

Denied the AOC for a touch too much VA, this wine sizzles and sparks as the tangy flavors run across your palate.

“The wine that will be known as 2008 Desjourneys is none other than Duperray’s 2008 Fleurie – combining Chapelle des Bois and Les Moriers – that was refused appellation and so is officially, merely, “vin de France.” Believe me, this is “vin de France” in the same sense that Debussy signed many of his late masterpieces “musicien francais.” The high-toned floral, herbal, and fruit distillate esters that memorably marked the Chapelle des Bois from cask as well as the black tea-tinged and more bittersweetly herbal and concentrated dark berries of the original Les Moriers, have been preserved in this marriage. This finishes with mouthwatering salinity and a tenacious, almost Gewurztraminer-like meld of brown spices concentrated floral and herbal essences. I would anticipate it being worth following for half a dozen years, but on no account should it be missed earlier-on.” Wine Advocate 93 points

Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2007 Product #28588 (In Stock)
Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2007 Bodegas Luis Canas Rioja Gran Reserva 2007

A very “Gran” Gran Reserva indeed, this is proof that Rioja’s traditional long oak aging of its top reds doesn’t need to deliver thin, wan, overoaked wines that you kind of wish had been bottled years earlier. As Wine Advocate said in reviewing the 95 point 2004 edition, “It has an irresistible bouquet that is so pure and sensual you do not know whether to drink it or stroke it.”  Aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, and black cherry take center stage with just the right accent of spice, chocolate and tobacco.  The palate is wonderfully pure and focused with more red fruit, licorice, chocolate and spice flavors that coat your palate.  The fruit turns fresh and bright – tangy raspberry, pomegranate and cranberry – on the finish where fine-grained, mellow, tannins provide support.  Focused, firm, and long, this is already delicious and will sing with anything from rich grilled fish to steak or lamb now and will grow in cellar for another 10+ years.  Fantastic stuff.

"(95% tempranillo and 5% graciano; from vines that are reportedly all over 50 years old): Deep ruby. Heady aromas of mulberry, raspberry, vanilla and exotic spices, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Supple, sweet and focused, offering sappy red and dark berry flavors and suggestions of licorice and mocha. Closes sweet and long, with no obvious tannins and an echo of dark berries."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Palacio De Fefinanes Albarino 1583 Rias Baixas 2013 Product #28665 (In Stock)
Palacio De Fefinanes Albarino 1583 Rias Baixas 2013 Palacio De Fefinanes Albarino 1583 Rias Baixas 2013

Current owner Juan Gil de Araujo Gonzales de Careaga created this unique and luxurious Albarino as an homage to Gonzalo Sarmiento Valladares, Viscount of Fefinanes, who was born in 1583 and built the castle that holds today’s winery in the early 1600s. You’ll find plenty of classic Albarino fruit, minerality, and freshness here but also another layer of complexity and interest from careful fermentation and brief aging in wood cask.

The aromas here are compelling - spicy, lightly smoky, scents of apricot, pear, orange and honeydew melon with touches of creamy vanilla and anise.  Fantastic balance in the mouth with a core of sliced lime, peach, and apricot fruit surrounded by just a bare hint of oak and loads of saline mineral.  The finish is super detailed, precise, and long with wood grilled fruit and zesty lemon-lime acidity sailing on and on.  As Wine Advocate said of the 2011, "Albarino from Rias Baixas does not come much better than this."

"Smoky pear and peach pit on the nose, with suave floral, mineral and honey qualities emerging with aeration; I don't sense that oak. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering pliant orchard fruit and orange pith flavors braced by vibrant minerality. Firm, juicy and pure on the penetrating finish, which shows excellent clarity and mineral-driven persistence."International Wine Cellar 92 points
