Winemaker Matthias Wimmer and estate owner Christian Raimont make this stunner from certified organic Grenache (55%) and Syrah (45%) grapes grown at the foot of the Alpilles mountains in central Provence.  The low yield grapes (about 33% of the legal maximum) ferments slowly in cement vat for 18 days before aging 12 months in barrel and 6 more back in concrete before bottling. 

You know the 2009 Lea is powerful from first sight of the intense, glass-staining, purple/black color.  The aromas are massive, too, with scents of dark blueberry, black plum, black currant, and smoky meat jumping from the glass.  With air, notes of licorice, black olive and crushed Provençal herb emerge and carry over to the rich, high-impact, palate to accent flavors of roasted black fruit, toasted spice, and meat juices.  The flavors build on the back-palate before exploding on the long, powerful, finish where firm tannins lie underneath pulsating flavors of dark fruit, roasting meat, licorice, and herb.  Remarkably fresh and even refreshing for all the richness, this is already a fine companion for grilled lamb or herb-rubbed pork and will comfort with cassoulet for years to come.

Patricia Green's Estate vineyards sits in the heart of Ribbon Ridge, perhaps the Willamette Valley's most exciting sub-region.  Brick House, Beaux Freres, and Penner-Ash are just some of Patty's neighbors here.  The thin sedimentary Willakenzie soils here drain freely and the protection from the surrounding Chehalem Mountains creates a warm, dry, climate perfect for intensely flavored Pinot Noir.  In 2014, the Estate Pinot is about 40% Wadensvil clone (for exuberant fruit) and equal parts Pommard (for structure) and Dijon 114 (for perfume and elegance). Co-owner Jim Anderson's description of the wine is so spot-on that we'll just quote it here:

“Ribbon Ridge can produce wines of incredible delicacy and wines of enormous power. Our Estate Vineyard bottling has always fallen into the latter category. The duress the plants are under in the thin marine soils’ upper layers causes the fruit to be relatively low in yields and smaller on a per cluster basis. This makes for darker and more naturally more structured wines. Even in a higher yielding, warmer (and therefore fruit-driven) year this bottling still exhibits broodingly dark fruit intertwined with loamy, earthy characteristics and finishes with gripping tannins that give the wine form. This is Pinot Noir for those with darker souls and, perhaps, some devious intentions. Don’t bring this bottle home to your mama because she is going to have a talk with you later.”

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.

Paitin makes three different wines from their excellent Serraboella vineyard, with Serra coming from the “young” vines – although much of this stock is 15-20 years old.  “Vibrancy” is the key word here, with fresh aromas of red berry, ginger, nutmeg, and smoke and a zippy cherry/raspberry palate with accents of spice and herb.  Even since Galloni tasted this, it’s smoothed out and shows plenty of fruit and a silky texture.  The most immediately delicious of the three Barbaresco (although sure to improve).

"Paitin's 2012 Barbaresco Serra bursts from the glass with exuberant red fruit, flowers, spices and crushed rocks. There is no shortage of intensity, although the Serra comes across as a bit rough around the edges, especially next to the 2011. It will be interesting to see what the last bit of aging brings.  Drink 2016-2024"  Vinous (Galloni) 89-91 points

Lia's straddles the volcanic and sedimentary divide in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, with volcanic soils at the top of the vineyard transitioning to marine sediments below.  Complex soils benefit from complexity in the vineyard, so Lia's is planted to Pommard in volcanic soils, Dijon 115 in sedimentary dirt, and a sliver of rarely seen Mariafeld Clone growing in the transition zone in the middle of the vineyard.  This is the first vintage Patty and Jim have had access to the Mariafeld Clone, and it took an outstanding wine  (92 points from Vinous in 2013) to a new level.

In 2013, this was one of the more tightly wound of Patty's wines, showing a peak of pleasure on release but tons of promise down the road.  In 2014, it's MUCH more generous and compelling right now but still has plenty of cellar life ahead.  As Patty's winery notes say, "The Mariafeld, Dijon 115 and Pommard lends a spicy note to the aromatics, a noticeable lift of red fruit and brightness in the mid-palate and a sturdier base of tannins. If there is a single vineyard Pinot Noir that we make that has more immediate appeal while still having down-the-road sort of chops this has to be it. This has forward, sweet dark fruit, quite a lot of texture and just enough finishing tannin to pull it all in at the end."
