Bodegas Pascual Ribera Del Duero Buro 2009 Product #26800 (In Stock)
Bodegas Pascual Ribera Del Duero Buro 2009 Bodegas Pascual Ribera Del Duero Buro 2009

One sip of this beauty and you may join us in saying, "Oh - so that's what Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero tastes like when it's not slathered in wood!"  Better than the score suggests - especially at these prices!

"Aged for 10 months in French and American oak. Ruby-red. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the nose and in the mouth. Round and fleshy, with good finishing breadth and slow-mounting tannins. I suspect that this fruit-driven wine will be in prime drinking form in the next couple of years."International Wine Cellar 89 points

"The 2009 Bruo de Penalosa Crianza comes from 40-year-old vines aged in equal French and American, new and old oak. It has a very attractive bouquet with expressive dark berry fruit mingling with steaming espresso and a touch of leather. The palate is well-balanced with succulent, ripe dark cherry and plum fruit, segueing into a lovely spice and white pepper-tinged finish that is graceful, yet intense. Superb! Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 92 points

Matello Pinot Noir Hommage Willamette Valley 2011 Product #27515 (In Stock)
Matello Pinot Noir Hommage Willamette Valley 2011 Matello Pinot Noir Hommage Willamette Valley 2011

Marcus makes this cuvee as a “Thank You” to all of the Willamette Valley winemakers who shared their talent, skill, and experience with him as he was learning to make wine.  It’s a blend of fruit from sites in Yamhill and the Dundee Hills.  It’s usually his darkest flavored Pinot Noir, but in the bright, crisp, 2011 vintage it fairly sparkles.  Complex aromas of ripe Pinot fruit, smoke and spice lead to vibrant flavors of sweet black cherry and savory smoke, spice, and mineral.  The flavors swirl around from sweetly fruited to floral and then to spice/earth/mineral and back again as juicy acids and fine, ripe, tannin make your mouth water.  Marcus (and I!) think this will follow the trajectory of his 2007s, gaining depth of fruit and softening over the next 3-5 years but never getting heavy or dense.  Beautiful stuff.

Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml Product #26569 (In Stock)
Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vyd 2011 375ml

Wine Advocate has suggested that Shea is the Willamette Valley’s one potential “superstar” vineyard and Ken makes the benchmark wine from this famous site.  Ken uses fruit from three different blocks in the vineyard, two planted to Dijon 114 and one to Dijon 777 clones. Shea Vineyard gives black/red fruit - especially blueberry - but with more spice and earth than other Yamhill-Carlton wines.  Always a fine marriage of ripe fruit and juicy, fresh, texture, this usually wants a few years in cellar to show its best. Ken pretty much made the reputation of this vineyard, and it's always one of his most powerful, concentrated, wines.

Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2010 Product #27563 (In Stock)
Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2010 Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2010

The 2010 harvest was fantastic for Barbera, and that blend of fine ripeness and zippy acidity shines through in spades here.  Luciano Sandrone blends fruit from 3 vineyards for this wine and then ages it for 12 months in 500 liter French oak barrels (about half new).  The wood allows Barbera’s tangy acids to relax and adds a little tannin, but the concentrated fruit has no trouble sopping up any oak flavors.  A great wine for big, boldly flavored, foods.

“Sandrone’s 2010 Barbera d’Alba is remarkably juicy and exuberant. There is plenty of rich, fleshy fruit in the glass, but at the same time, I expected to find more minerality and energy in this vintage. On the plus side, the French oak, which can sometimes be dominant, is better integrated than it has been at times. Overall, the 2010 is an excellent choice for drinking over the near and medium term.”Wine Enthusiast 89 points

“A lush, modern style, delivering plenty of power on a supple texture. Possesses definition and balance, intensity and length--just about all you could ask for in a Barbera. Drink now through 2015. 500 cases imported.”Wine Spectator 92 points

Thibault Liger-belair Moulin A Vent Vieilles Vignes 2011 Product #28183 (In Stock)
Thibault Liger-belair Moulin A Vent Vieilles Vignes 2011 Thibault Liger-belair Moulin A Vent Vieilles Vignes 2011

The 90+ point reviews understate how good this wine is. Delicious and amazing at table, even with fish. Unfortunately, less than a case left.

"Here the nose is similar to that of the Rouchaux but with two small differences, which are that the fruit is ever-so-slightly riper and there is a bit more complexity. This additional depth is also reflected by the impressively well-concentrated, dusty and quite serious medium-bodied flavors that offer first-rate length. This should also reward well mid-term cellaring."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

"A bit reduced and marked by its low sulfur when tasted as a tank sample, Liger-Belair’s 2011 Moulin-a-Vent Vieilles Vignes nonetheless reveals enticing cassis and blackberry garlanded with peony and iris and laced with black tea. With polish and lift similar to that of its stable mates, this cuvees tart berry edge, seedy crunch, and pungent, piquant herb and tea inflections serve for invigoration, while marrowy depth and salinity serve for saliva-inducing savor. Expect it to perform well at least through 2018."Wine Advocate 90-91 points

Dom Borgeot Santenay Blanc 1er Cru Les Gravieres 2006 Dom Borgeot Santenay Blanc 1er Cru Les Gravieres 2006

This was very popular when first released in 2008 and has just gotten better with time.  A savory take on Chardonnay from a fine 1er Cru site, it shows notes of fennel, scallion green, mint and chalk to go with the still fresh yellow apple and peach fruit.  Bright acids complement the rich, round, mouthfeel and there's nice length on the palate and herb and fruit-inflected finish.

Firriato Nero D'avola Harmonium 2009 Product #26286 (In Stock)
Firriato Nero D'avola Harmonium 2009 Firriato Nero D'avola Harmonium 2009

Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s most important red grape, but it has a tendency to either go over-ripe and prune-like or under-ripe and harsh.  Firriato has a way with Nero d’Avola as we’ve seen in their “regular” Chiramonte wine, but here they really open up and let Nero strut its stuff.  This is fully ripe (but not over the top) Nero that gets time in small barrel.  The past two vintages scored 90 points in Wine Spectator, and the review of the 2008 sure applies here:  “Ripe and amped up, this boasts layered flavors of baking spice, toasty oak and grilled rosemary, which lead to a jammy core of plum skin and kirsch fruit. Medium tannins and tarry minerals accent the long, dark finish.”  Big steak wine.

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Gaubela 2011 Product #27285 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Gaubela 2011 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Gaubela 2011

The first vintage of a new wine from Norberto Miguel.  Old-vine Tempranillo is de-stemmed and then goes into a tank without being crushed.  Then, Norberto climbs into the tank and treads the grapes by foot, eventually sinking down to his chest as the berries collapse and release their fruit.  After fermentation, he drains the free-run wine off the skins and ages it in a mixture of French plus a little American oak, almost all used.

The result is a very focused, tightly wound, wine full of intense black cherry, plum and berry fruit with floral and licorice accents.  Extraordinary minerality for Tempranillo here, with firm tannins under a long, complex, finish.  Wants time in decanter or cellar now, but as it opens - watch out!

Department 66 (Dave Phinney) D66 Grenache 2010 Product #27855 (In Stock)
Department 66 (Dave Phinney) D66 Grenache 2010 Department 66 (Dave Phinney) D66 Grenache 2010

One of the reasons Dave chose to cash out of Orin Swift was to fund this project, a set of vineyards and new winery located in Maury, France, close to the Spanish border and nestled in the Pyrnes-Orientales. Dave now owns 235 acres of mostly 60+ year-old Grenache vines with a little Syrah and Carignan. With poor, rocky soils, these old vines struggle to produce low yields of super-ripe grapes – and Dave knows what to do with those!  Not a lot of finesse here, but plenty of powerful fruit and spice.

“A modern style, offering intense, powerful flavors of roasted plum, dark cherry and kirsch, with boysenberry. Asian spice, cream and dark chocolate accents that are very rich, leading to the long and muscular finish which exudes a concentrated spiciness. Drink now through 2020.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Jules Desjourneys Fleurie 2007 Product #28517 (In Stock)
Jules Desjourneys Fleurie 2007 Jules Desjourneys Fleurie 2007

The very first release from what has become the most lauded estate in Beaujolais history.  This is dark and dusky and needs at least an hour in decanter now to fully unfold.

"“Duperray’s 2007 Fleurie – pure Moriers – displays game and underbrush along with narcissus-like musky florality on the nose. Smoky black tea, meat stock, and a maritime mingling of salinity and alkalinity add further complexity on a palate whose ripe fresh black fruits come off as practically an afterthought. This relatively lean but profound Fleurie of only, exactly 12% alcohol (!) needs time in the air due to its still being a bit reduced, which Duperray attributes to his intentions that customers should keep hands off these 2007s for a bit longer, but which he also thinks is accentuated by his use of a specially selected, high-elevation-grown one-Euro “precautionary” cork.”"Wine Advocate 90 points

Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 Product #28279 (In Stock)
Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009 Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009

This 2009 Barbaresco is so delicious right now that it will be hard to wait until its full flowering in 5 years or so.  Good reason to grab more than a few bottles now!  A fantastic “normale” Barbaresco at a stellar price.

"Produttori del Barbaresco is like that long-lost friend who always picks up a lively conversation no matter how many years have passed since your last meeting. It’s the ultimate fallback wine: It’s never intimidating or awkward. It’s always a pleasure to drink. The 2009 Barbaresco shows personality and good cheer with a good dose of dried fruit and savory spice. There are some elements that make the wine seem more aged than it really is. Cured meat and old leather emerge. But then the wine suddenly surprises you with an entourage of Nebbiolo-based tones like dried mint and licorice that tell you it still has loads of life within. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.”Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright cherry, strawberry, floral, licorice and herbal aromas and flavors highlight this fragrant, elegant red, which is silky and pure, with fine ripe tannins for support. Shows excellent length, with an aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2015 through 2028.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Brick House Vineyards Gamay Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Product #28786 (In Stock)
Brick House Vineyards Gamay Noir Willamette Valley 2012 Brick House Vineyards Gamay Noir Willamette Valley 2012

Doug Tunnel’s Gamay Noir a Jus Blanc (or just “Gamay” to most folks) is widely recognized as one of the two or three best versions in the world outside of the top Crus of Beaujolais.  The 2012 is the best we’ve ever tasted here, with all of the stony minerality, dark fruit, and floral aromas and flavors you’d expect from a top Beaujolais – but with the lush texture and sweet, ripe, fruit you’d expect in the great 2012 harvest.  There’s a lot in common with Thibault Liger-Belair’s award-winning Moulin-a-Vent, but with more fruit and a touch less tannin and granite on the finish.  A great wine for roast chicken, salmon, cheese, casseroles, beef tenderloin – oh just buy the stuff and drink it!

“This is one of Oregon’s most unique wines, and one that rises confidently to the level of excellent cru Beaujolais in a ripe year. Bright and spicy with generous flavors of strawberry and blueberry, this sports lip-smacking acidity and a dash of minerality. The sweet young fruit is full, forward and delicious.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Product #27978 (In Stock)
Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008 Finca Sandoval Manchuela 2008

When journalist Victor de la Serena decided it was time to make wine, rather than just write about it, he decided to do things right.  Working in the hot, dry, Spanish wine region of Manchuela, he purchased Syrah and Mourvedre cuttings from his favorite winery, the great Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and planted those along with a little of the region’s native Bobal.  High-density plantings and meticulous dropping of fruit gave him low yields and careful winemaking with just the right mix of oak delivered a wine with a little modern polish but lots of authentic gutsiness and heart.  The 2008 is ready to go now or anytime over the next 5-8 years.  Our best price ever on this bold, blockbuster, red.

"76% syrah, 13% mourvedre and 11% bobal, planted on chalky soil; aged in 85% French and 15% American oak that ranged from new to three years old. Bright purple. Spicy, highly fragrant nose features perfumed blackberry, violet and orange peel, with hints of smoke and black olive. Really showing the syrah now. Dense, sappy and chewy but surprisingly lithe; the intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are at once taut and rich, thanks to zesty minerality. Finishes very suave and long, with fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness.” International Wine Cellar 92 points

Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2009 Product #28624 (In Stock)
Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2009 Worthy Sophia's Cuvee Napa Valley 2009

Worthy’s Sophia’s Cuvee is the second wine of Axios, a Napa “cult Cabernet” producer best known for its $125 flagship Cab.  It’s been one of our best-selling Napa Cabs ever since its 2001 debut vintage earned 92 points and a place on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list.  Since then, it’s been a super-reliable bottle of Napa Cab with ripe, supple, currant, smoke and green herb flavors and a darkly fruited finish.

The 2009 is a bit more muscular than usual, but still shows right down the middle Napa Cabernet aromas and flavors with good blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, a dash of cassis, and accents of smoky, chocolatey, oak.  Decant it for a bit to let the tannins relax or just pair it with grilled steak.

Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2009 Product #28042 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2009 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2009

An utterly compelling Barolo from 30-50 year old vines, aged 80% in classic large cask and 20% in small barrel (used) for polish and softness.  Blended from 5 top vineyards in Barolo, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello, this outshines many much higher priced 2009 Barolo.  It will age easily for a decade+, but it's in the window right now with rich foods or truffles.

"Damilano's 2009 Barolo Lecinquevigne boasts serious depth and intensity. Dark cherry, plum, spices, mocha, menthol, tar and licorice meld together in a rich, powerful, intense entry-level wine. This is a fabulous effort for the year. The 2009 shows great intensity of color and fruit, with beautifully balanced, harmonious tannins. All in all, this is a terrific showing."  Antonio Galloni 91 points

"Moderately saturated medium red. Inviting aromas of strawberry, espresso, mocha, earth and mellow oak. Supple, lush and seamless, with spicy red berry flavors complicated by sexy truffley underbrush. Dom Michel Sarrazin Mercurey La Perriere 2012 Product #28815 (In Stock)
Dom Michel Sarrazin Mercurey La Perriere 2012 Dom Michel Sarrazin Mercurey La Perriere 2012

A winner of a red Burgundy that delivers the perfect blend of luscious Pinot Noir fruit, toasty oak, and authentic Burgundy earthy minerality.  The Sarrazin brothers grow this in the fine La Perrriere vineyard, just next to the 1er Cru Le Clos L'Eveque, prick it ripe, and give it a luxurious stay in 75% new French oak.  In 2012, it's wonderfully rich and concentrated, but never rough or rugged and has absorbed the wood beautifully. Aromas and flavors of sweet red cherry, red plum, and raspberry with accents of crushed violet and smoke. The fruit is nicely sweet and fresh - more than enough for any Willamette Valley Pinot drinker - but with a touch of Burgundy's own iron ore and warm stone minerality.  You'll love how the fruit gets more sweet and fresh with air without losing the focus of the firm finish. A classy but easy-to-drink Burgundy that shines at table or for a crowd.

"The 2012 Mercurey La Perriere Village displays perfumed red cherry and plum aromas. On the palate it has excellent depth of flavor and layered flavors with a firm tannic finish. This wine should provide drinking pleasure until 2019 or longer."  i-Wine Review 90+ points
