Is anyone in Austria making better Grüner Veltliner than Karl and Brigitta Steininger right now?  I don’t know for sure, but I guarantee that no one is making better Grüner for the money than these rising Kamptal superstars and, for my money, this is the best wine they make.

It serves up wild aromatics of white and stone fruit, exotic spice, white pepper and a hint of caramel.  All those notes and more pour out across your palate in a rich wine with fine density and amazing cut, vibrancy, and drive.  The finish is wonderfully long, leaving mouthwatering fresh fruits, white pepper, and a touch of lemon zest lingering. A brilliant follow-up to the 92 point 2013!

"A blend of head-pruned Monastrell with some Cabernet Sauvignon from chalk-rich soils fermented in open stainless-steel vats and aged in barrique for 20 months. You can feel the warmth and ripeness of the year in the aromas of prunes, blackberries, thyme and rosemary accented with plenty of sweet spices and smoky notes from the barrel that might need a little bit more time in bottle. The palate is full-bodied, with powerful tannins lifted by the alcohol on a warm finish. I'd wait a little bit for the bottle to render the puppy fat and allow the oak to better integrate. Rita first came to international attention with the 2007 edition of this white, and Wine Advocate once again named this their top Douro white in 2011.  It’s a field blend of of Rabigato, Côdega de Larinho, Códega, Viosinho and Gouveio from an ancient, pre-phylloxera, vineyard in the cool Teja Valley, far above the Douro River.  Rita fermented and aged the just ripe fruit for 10 months in a blend of French and Caucasian oak, about 40% new.

This takes the bright, fresh, fruit flavors of the Contraste Branco and adds a layer of white Burgundy sophistication and complexity.  Aromas of apple, apricot, grilled pineapple, smoke, crushed chervil, and wet stones.  The flavors follow the nose and add creamy vanilla, toasted nut, and brown spice and find the crushed fresh herb coming forward.  An anise note emerges on the back and carries through to the long, broad, and super-fresh finish that just keeps pumping out juicy acids, bitter citrus pith, and salty mineral flavors for a minute or more. A stunner for now and years to come.

It’s illegal to put Cabernet Sauvignon in a wine labeled “Brunello,” but Bordeaux’s best red grape grows so well here that Mastrojanni just couldn’t resist planting some on the old San Pio estate.  Since 1997 that rich, ripe, Cabernet has been blended with 20% declassified Brunello to produce this delicious super-Tuscan blend.  The aromas and texture suggest richer Bordeaux or fresher Napa Cabernet but the bright cherry core and juicy, long, finish say “Italy” loud and clear.  A very fine value in small-production (less than 600 cases) super-Tuscan Cabernet.

"A blend of 20% Sangiovese and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 San Pio is a hearty and approachable red wine that would taste great next to a succulent cut of beef. The wine ages in oak for 18 months and consequently delivers a full offering of aromas that spans from bright cherry fruit to exotic spice. Current owner Juan Gil de Araujo Gonzales de Careaga created this unique and luxurious Albarino as an homage to Gonzalo Sarmiento Valladares, Viscount of Fefinanes, who was born in 1583 and built the castle that holds today’s winery in the early 1600s. You’ll find plenty of classic Albarino fruit, minerality, and freshness here but also another layer of complexity and interest from careful fermentation and brief aging in wood cask.  It’s a perfect match for richer or more complex dishes – a perfect alternative to outstanding white Burgundy.  As Wine Advocate said of the 2011, "Albarino from Rias Baixas does not come much better than this."

Dow’s winemakers pick lots every vintage to go into the Tawny Port program.  The finished Port goes into large barrels and ages slowly, gradually acquiring a nutty, caramel, character and gaining an orangey/tawny color.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is made from a blend of these ports that are average approximately 10 years of age - although the “10-Year” designation indicates style more than actual wine age.  Dow’s 10-Year Tawny is a classic - orange peel, caramel, honey, nuts, and dried fig flavors swirl around a hint of red berry fruit.  Once again, the classic Dow dry finish keeps the wine refreshing.

Bruce Neyers makes pure, delicious, Chardonnay with ripe grapes, new and used barrels, and little lees stirring, and pretty much nothing else.  His 2013 is rich and creamy with deep aromas and flavors of buttery pear, golden apple, and butterscotch.  The texture is lush and round into the generous finish where a touch of citrus pith and minerality bring freshness.  A fine drinker's Chardonnay and excellent with food, too.

As Kermit Lynch's National Sales Manager (and co-wine-picker), Bruce Neyers has spent a lot of time in France and developed a deep love and appreciation for the Old World style.  So when Tadeo Borchardt, winemaker at Bruce's own winery in Napa's Conn Valley, asked Bruce if he could make a California Carignan, "Yes!" was the immediate answer.  Brochardt had gotten his hands on a few acres of Carignan from Frank Evangelho’s very old, own-rooted, vineyard  in Contra Costa County, south of San Francisco.  The whole vineyard was planted around 1890 and its sandy soils protected it from phylloxera and lets the vines remain on their own roots.  The vines for this wine come from the original planting and Frank carefully coaxes out less than 1 tone of fruit per acre each year.

The SF Chronicle's Jon Bonné sums it up well: "The Evangelho site, planted in 1890 in Antioch, has been the source for a great number of people over the years, including Cline and Jade Mountain. Neyers winemaker Tadeo Borchardt tapped it for a smoky, ripe expression of the grape, redolent of toasted pumpernickel, violets and classic roasted plum fruit. It shows a nuance and suppleness that old Contra Costa soils can offer." (San Francisco Chronicle, 2/22/2013)

Domaine D'Eole is one of the best producers in all of Provence, and the 2004 Cuvee Confidence white gives you a pretty good idea of why.  This wine is produced from 100% organically grown grapes, and is a blend of 60% Rousanne, 33% Rolle, and 10% Grenache Blanc.  The vibrant, fresh, fruit of this tricky vintage was fermented and aged for 8 months in 50% new French oak barrels, giving the wine a fantastically creamy, rich, texture.  Peach, pear, pineapple and passionfruit aromas and flavors show in this full-bodied wine.  Showing plenty of in-bottle development but still fresh and lively.

What happens with a top Burgundy winemaker (Jean-Michel Guillon) encourages friends and importers of wines from France (Olivier Daubresse) and Spain (Jonas Gustafsson) to import a Barolo from Italy?  When the Barolo is the stunning 2010 La Tartufaia from young Giulia Negri – aka “BaroloGirl”, something pretty magical results!

Giulia is a child of Barolo (her family owns the well-respected Serrandenari estate), and has  struck out on her own to make Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (which is how she met Jean-Michel), and a classically styled, very pure, Nebbiolo from Barolo’s great 2010 vintage.  Very pure, lifted, scents of red and black berries waft from the glass with accents of tobacco, plum, dried rose petal, and tar.  It’s nicely relaxed and pure – especially at this young age – on the palate, with juicy red/black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco, and hints of smoky oak.  With air, a little truffle and potpourri emerge and the fruit flavors get deeper and more prominent as the wine sails on to a generous finish over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Round and rich, this tempts right now with big tannins that melt away nicely but will become more exciting and explosive from 2017 – 2025.

Paitin makes three different wines from their excellent Serraboella vineyard, with Serra coming from the “young” vines – although much of this stock is 15-20 years old.  “Vibrancy” is the key word here, with fresh aromas of red berry, ginger, nutmeg, and smoke and a zippy cherry/raspberry palate with accents of spice and herb.  Even since Galloni tasted this, it’s smoothed out and shows plenty of fruit and a silky texture.  The most immediately delicious of the three Barbaresco (although sure to improve).

"Paitin's 2012 Barbaresco Serra bursts from the glass with exuberant red fruit, flowers, spices and crushed rocks. There is no shortage of intensity, although the Serra comes across as a bit rough around the edges, especially next to the 2011. It will be interesting to see what the last bit of aging brings.  Drink 2016-2024"  Vinous (Galloni) 89-91 points
