Erin Nuccio made just 3.5 barrels of this elegant, Burgundy-style, Chardonnay in the great 2012 Oregon harvest and named it for his daughter, Juliette.  Barrel fermented and aged for 18 months on the lees (but with no stirring), it opens with complex aromas of green apple, toasted nuts, and a hint of butter.  Then, you'll find layered flavors of citrus, lemon curd, Granny Smith, and hazelnut.  Creamy textured but crisp and nutty on the vivid finish.  Give it a big swirl or even a short decant and watch it unfurl!

A blend of biodynamically grown Sangiovese and 15% each Merlot and Syrah from pebble and sandstone laced vineyards overlooking the walled Tuscan city of Luca.  I can’t quite decide if this is more like a 3-4 year-old Brunello or a really nice vintage of Antinori’s Tignanello super-Tuscan.  From the nose to the rich, powerful, palate this explodes with pure black cherry, fruit blossom, spice, and expensive leather aromas and flavors.  The very deep flavors get support from fine-grained, ripe, tannins as hints of crushed herb, licorice, and expensive balsamic weave in and out of the long, long, finish.  Distinctive, delicious, and very nicely priced.

Chappellet has been turning out benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from its vineyards high on Prichard Hill for 40 years now, but it's their Napa Valley Chardonnay that's won the most fans here over the years.  The 2013 is made by blending fruit from cool vineyards near San Pablo Bay, the Napa side of Carneros, and a little from Oak Knoll just above Carneros.  It's barrel fermented and aged on the lees for creamy richness, but only one-third sees new wood and a bit more than half goes through malolactic fermentation (so the wine stays crisp and fresh).

California's 2013 harvest is shaping up to be an outstanding vintage, and Chardonnay's like this one show you why. The aromas are concentrated and generous, with scents of orange zest, pear, apple, lemon drop and pretty accents of baking spice and vanilla from the oak.  In the mouth, it delivers a lush mouthfull of peach and apple fruit with a good dose of lemon custard, creme fraiche, and sweet spice.  The finish is clean, bright, and focused with nice apple-like acidity and notes of toast and ginger lingering nicely.  This will actually flesh out and get even better over the next few years, although there's certainly no reason to not enjoy it right now!  Steal of a price, too.

Like last year's 2012, this serves up complex aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, earthy mushroom, sweet spice, and forest floor.  On the palate, it's mouthfilling but very elegant in weight with layered flavors of blackberry, huckleberry, sweet cherry, and fresh earth.  The pure, generous, flavors roll across your tongue with fine grace and persistence and linger nicely over the bright acids and fine-grained tannins.

Aromas and flavors of sweet red cherry, red plum, and raspberry with accents of crushed violet and smoke. The fruit is nicely sweet and fresh - more than enough for any Willamette Valley Pinot drinker - but with a touch of Burgundy's own iron ore and warm stone minerality.  You'll love how the fruit gets more sweet and fresh with air without losing the focus of the firm finish. As Robert Parker says, “brothers Christophe and Sebastian Jaume have taken this estate, established in 1826, to new heights” over the past 20 years.  Today, they practice certified organic farming of all of their Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards.  It’s a blend of hand-harvested Grenache (70%) that’s fermented and aged in concrete plus 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, both aged 14 months in second and third use French oak casks.

The aromatics are generous and pure, with layers of creamy blackberry, raspberry, floral lavender, licorice, and a hint of spice. It’s big and rich on the palate, but not at all heavy or thick.  The flavors show off dark cherry and black raspberry fruit with accents of thyme, lavender, warm stones, and a touch of anise.  Stays very pure and focused, even refreshing, with a long, fruit-filled, finish over supple, fine-grained, tannins.  Balanced and delicious already but sure to improve through 2022.
