Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009 Product #28422 (In Stock)
Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009 Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009

"The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano brings together the best qualities of the vintage, with a solid core of intense fruit, expressive aromatics and a measure of tannic heft that will keep the wine fresh and vibrant for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice and leather notes flesh out on the huge, voluptuous finish. In 2009, the Montestefano is fabulous."  Antonio Galloni 94 points

"Good healthy deep red. Musky, reduced nose offers dark raspberry and a whiff of menthol. Big, broad and sweet in the mouth, with plush raspberry fruit given shape and lift by lovely vinosity. This rather powerful, even massive, Barbaresco opened beautifully in the glass to show a deep sweetness and lovely perfume. The long, slowly mounting finish betrays no rough edges. I'd lay this down for five years."International Wine Cellar 92(?+) points

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2013 1.5l Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2013 1.5l

Even better in big bottle, both now and in the future!

"A perfumed and very pretty nose combines notes of both red and dark berries along with plenty of earth and sandalwood nuances. There is good vibrancy to the delicious middle weight flavors that possess fine delineation on the lightly mineral-inflected finale. I like the complexity and while this could be enjoyed young there is enough material present to suggest 2 to 4 years of upside development potential."Allen Meadows 86-88 points

Clerico Barolo Pajana 2010 Product #28681 (In Stock)
Clerico Barolo Pajana 2010 Clerico Barolo Pajana 2010

Always a favorite, Pajana comes from a slightly warmer vineyard that delivers good ripeness but great acidity as well.  Very vivid and pure in 2010 with a stunning finish.

"Good medium red. Less expressive on the nose than the Briccotto, hinting at ripe, musky plum, black raspberry, menthol and tobacco. Then smooth and sweet in the mouth, but with terrific energy keeping the red fruit and tobacco flavors fresh and primary. Sweeter and more elegant in style than the 2009, but this fine-grained, firmly tannic wine really shut down in the glass. Outstanding potential here." International Wine Cellar 94(+?) points

"The 2010 Barolo Pajana is a stunning wine that shows the power and heft of the vintage. Its texture is soft and enduring with sweet almond, toasted hazelnut, bright cherry, spice and tobacco. The young tannins require more time to soften and integrate. Drink: 2017-2032." Wine Advocate 93 points

Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin 2010 Product #28682 (In Stock)
Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin 2010 Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin 2010

Domenico farms these 40-50 year-old Nebbiolo vines in the Ginestra cru of Monforte d’Alba. At 400 meters altitude and with a south/southeast exposure, this site always give explosive red fruit aromas with notes of licorice and mint.  Clerico's most plump, broad and generous Barolo.

"Good full red. Liqueur-like plum and black cherry on the nose. Then fine-grained and classy but tightly wound, showing utterly primary flavors of cherry, red berries and menthol. There's no way into this extremely backward wine today. But it has the racy acidity and excellent clarity for a spectacular evolution in bottle." International Wine Cellar 95(+?) points

"The 2010 Barolo Ciabot Mentin opens to a deep, dark color and tarry aromas of dark fruit and liquid smoke. The use of oak is bold but contained, adding extra layering to the supple finish. The power and elegance of the vintage comes though at this early stage although the wine clearly needs more time to evolve. Drink: 2017-2030."Wine Advocate 94 points

Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition Product #14818 (In Stock)
Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition

This stunning Champabage blends 70% Pinot Noir/30% Chardonnay from 3 Grand Cru sites in Ambonnay, Verzenay and Bouzy with about half from 2011 and the rest 2010, 2009 and 2008. Some of the base wine fermented in barrel for richness, supporting low (under 5 g/l) dossage levels.  This release was disgourged in May 2016 and will certainly be another in a long string of 92-94 point winners.  Galloni's review of last Fall's release remains on point.

"The NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is all class. Suave, silky and expressive on the palate, the NV Grand Cru Tradition is quite pretty, with lovely brightness and freshness to balance the wine's inherent richness. Red stone fruits, hazelnuts, white flowers and mint are all pushed forward in this deceptively understated Champagne from Egly-Ouriet."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009 Product #27806 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009 Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009

The compact soils and south/southest-facing exposure of this site in Serralunga helped Ca' Mia retain fine freshness even as it ripened into plush, velvety, richness. The first to sell out of the 2009s and likely to be the first 2009 gone, too.

"In this hot vintage the 2009 Barolo Ca' Mia appears to have handled the weather best of all the wines in the range, which isn't that much of a shock, considering that the more compact soils of Serralunga are at an advantage in warmer years. Firm tannins provide the backdrop for a serious core of dark red fruit, flowers, iron, tar and licorice, all of which seem to literally jump out of the glass. The 2009 has more than enough fruit and sheer depth to age well for a number of years."  Antonio Galloni 92 points

"Captivatingly fresh, primary aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers are accented by a sappy note of blood orange; reminded me a bit of a topnotch Burgundy from Vosne or Chambolle. Sweet and thick but with lovely acidity giving the wine a strong impression of inner-mouth tension. A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Wonderfully elegant and perfumed Barolo from a south/southeast-facing vineyard that is spared the hottest afternoon sun."International Wine Cellar 94+? points

"The intensity and richness is bountiful, and seductive aromatic layers of dried fruit, licorice, tar, button mushroom and tobacco lift off the glass with building intensity. The wine’s texture is firmer and the length is decisively more rewarding. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."Wine Advocate 93 points

Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Product #28442 (In Stock)
Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

The last wine Mike Hirby releases from each vintage, and the most impressive Artefact Cabernet to date.  The wine’s backbone is fruit from the tiny (3 acre) Corona Vineyard in the hills just west of Oakville.  Mike describes the site as “a moonscape, with tiny shale pebbles going who-knows how deep.”  The poor soils and small berries here give a wine of fantastic intensity and power.  You’ll find deep aromas of crushed blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate, and sweet spices and flavors to match.  There’s plenty of structure to support the lush fruit, and while you probably should hold this for 3-5 years, it’s hard to resist right now with a rare steak!

“78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc and 8% malbec): Aromas of cassis, briary blackberry and bitter chocolate, lifted by a violet topnote. Large-scaled, chewy, mountain-style wine (it's from the Corona vineyard at the top of the Oakville Grade), with a medicinal quality to its flavors of black cherry, blackberry and licorice. This youthfully musclebound cabernet finishes with substantial tannins and very good energy. Serve it with a rare steak now or, better yet, hold it for five years for more complexity. These small, thick-skinned berries ripen late, notes winemaker Mike Hirby.”International Wine Cellar 92(+?) points

Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj 2008 Product #28934 (In Stock)
Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj 2008 Clerico Barolo Aeroplan Servaj 2008

The newest Barolo from Domenico, the name means "whimsical airplane" in dialect - a tribute to Domenico's day dreaming as a child.  The wine is from Serralunga, the only Barolo he makes outside of Monforte.  Each lable in the six pack is slightly different - fitting for a wine the presents something new with every sip. Beautiful.

"From 35-year-old vines in Badarina in Serralunga. Good deep red. Medicinal aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, cherry, menthol and tobacco; very Serralunga. At once suave and penetrating, offering terrific definition and inner-mouth aromatic character. Powerful acidity is keeping this wine tightly wrapped today, but it has buns of steel to support a graceful evolution in bottle."International Wine Cellar 94(+?) points

"The 2008 Barolo Aeroplanservaj puts on a whole different act. Here, the emphasis is on elegance and finesse. The opulence and massiveness of the wine fits in with the Clerico philosophy, but unlike the Barolo Briccotto its strongest cards are played with a more subtle strategy. The aromas of black fruit and spice are wrapped a bit tighter, and the wine shows some nervous tension in the glass that needs to soften with age. I loved those delicate sprigs of mint and wild flower that somehow emerge from the inner depths of this rock-solid wine. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."Wine Advocate 95 points

Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2014 Product #31359 (In Stock)
Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2014 Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2014

Always one of the more lushly textured of Jean-Michel's wines, the 2014 Morey Saint Denis is also among the easiest of the 1er Crus to enjoy young. Not the most powerful wine in the collection, but certainly the prettiest and most inviting.  One of my personal favorites, especially in 2014. Very tempting today, better in 2021, and improving right on through 2029 and beyond.

"Slightly more subtle but still prominent oak merges with the cool and pretty red berry fruit, floral and discreet spice nuances. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the lightly stony and attractively textured middle weight flavors that possess a caressing and well-balanced finale. This is one of those wines which each sip invites the next thanks to the appealing texture and verve."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) 2013 Puligny 1er Les Referts Product #31467 (In Stock)
Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) 2013 Puligny 1er Les Referts Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) 2013 Puligny 1er Les Referts

With its neighbors Combettes and Perrieres, the Referts vineyard makes up Puligny Montrachet’s boundary with Meursault. There’s always plenty of power and spice to this wine at Marc Morey, and in 2013 there’s also an extra-fine texture and excellent precision.  A truly delicious Puligny Montrachet.  This is more open and giving than Virondot today but it will really come into it's own from 2018 or so on.

"Outstanding. This too is notably cool with its beautifully layered nose of acacia blossom, green fruit and once again plenty of citrus character. There is first-rate intensity to the delineated yet fleshy middle weight flavors that deliver the same fine length if not quite the same complexity. I like the natural refinement of a fine Puligny and this should drink well after only 3 to 4 years of cellar time."Allen Meadows 91 points

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Product #13994 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV

As the name suggests, Eric Rodez’s Grand Vintages is a rich, powerful and very much “grand” wine in the tradition of Krug (where Eric learned his craft).  This year's release is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from seven great vintages going back to vintage 2000.  Eric ages all of these base wines in used oak and blocks malolactic fermentation to maximize freshness and vibrancy.  Then the carefully crafted blend spends 8 full years on the lees before being disgorged this October. The dosage is ultra-low - 2 or 3 g/l - so this could be labeled "Extra Brut," but there's so much richness and depth here that "Brut" seems more appropriate to Eric.

Past releases have earned plenty of critical praise, including 17.5/20 points from Jancis Robinson, 93 from Vinous, and 92 from Wine Advocate.  This year’s release is explosive on the nose and palate, pumping out big notes of lemon curd, caramel, toasted nuts, baking bread, crushed chalk, and more.  The flavors just balloon out to fill your entire palate and finish with layer upon layer of mouthwatering pie crust, lemon curd, hazelnut, crushed stone and salty caramel flavor.  Try holding some for even more richness!

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Product #30037 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013

Hoo boy!  As Burghound notes, this will need another 6 or 7 years to “arrive at its full potential,” but it’s nearly impossible to resist right now.  A big "wow" wine that delivers a silky, plush, nose of spice, rich fruit, fresh earth and cocoa.  Then a mouthful of dark fruit, unctuous cocoa butter, spice and cigar tobacco with superb length, plenty of power, but absolutely no excess weight.  This is arguably the wine that most clearly exemplifies Jean Michel’s style and talent and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

"Outstanding. This is one of the ripest wines in the range as the mocha-scented nose displays notes of cassis and black raspberry liqueur notes along with spice, earth and floral wisps. There is good minerality and plenty of earth and sauvage characters on the intense and punch medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a clean and dry (in the best sense) finale that is notably austere at present. I like the depth and balance though note that this muscular effort will definitely require extended cellaring to arrive at its full potential."Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Paitin Barbaresco Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne 1999 Product #30175 (In Stock)
Paitin Barbaresco Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne 1999 Paitin Barbaresco Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne 1999

Made from the 65 year-old vines at the heart of the Sori Paitin vineyard within view of the villages of Neive, Treiso and Barbaresco. The 1999 vintage marked the first time these vines had ever been bottled separately, and ever since then, this has been Paitin's top wine.

"The 1999 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin Vecchie Vigne is dark, powerful and opulent, with more than enough stuffing to age well for the better part of the next decade. Smoke, menthol, tar, black fruit and French oak blossom in the glass as this resonant, exuberant Barbaresco show off its unique, totally compelling personality. The French oak is present, but well balanced at the same time."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

"Impressive wine. Rich aromas of ripe fruit and freshly ground spices. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. A blockbuster, yet very polished. Best after 2003. 500 cases made."Wine Spectator 93 points

Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino V.V. 2009 Product #30364 (In Stock)
Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino V.V. 2009 Le Ragnaie Brunello Di Montalcino V.V. 2009

A producer we've always admired, but never bought becomes irresistible at these very significant savings.  Limited.

""Le Ragnaie is, in my opinion, the break-out star of the 2009 vintage. If I were to select my top picks of the 2009 vintage, these beautiful bottles would be among them. Their tasting profile – loaded with gorgeous, elegant floral nuances – clearly sets them apart. They are the essence of balance and Brunello beauty. The ethereal 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. sees fruit sourced from older vines from vineyards located almost at the bull’s eye center of the appellation, roughly equidistant between Montalcino and Tavernelle. Under 3,000 bottles were produced. Like the base Brunello, this wine first goes into cement vats to undergo fermentation and this step has added much in terms of the wine’s aromatic profile. Subdued notes of pressed flower, dusty earth, ash and crushed mineral render a feminine and elegant expression. This wine is simply fantastic and among my favorite of the year. Drink: 2017-2027."Wine Advocate 93+ points

Dom Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers 2013 Dom Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers 2013

Gevrey’s 1er Cru Clos St Jacques vineyard probably should have been named a Grand Cru when titles were handed out in the 1930s.  This vineyard, Cazetiers, is, as  Clive Coates explains, “almost as well exposed as Clos St Jacques and can closely approach it” in quality.  Dom Henri Magnien owns about 4 acres here, making it their single largest vineyard holding and one of their most important.

In their outstanding 2013 release, you'll find black cherry and raspberry fruit with accents if iron ore, smoke, and spice. The wine glides across your palate like silk before fine tannins come up for grip and shape.  Long and lovely - decant or hold through 2028.  Very highly recommended!

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2014

As it has for the past few years, Champeaux stands out among Guillon's 2014 1er Cru wines for its purity of fruit and beautiful texture.  Much more open and accessible than Champonnets today, Champeax impresses with its blend of ripe dark fruit, classic Gevrey earth and iron-ore, and hints of floral elegance.  Approachable now, better from 2021 - 2029+.

Outstanding "A cool, pure and restrained nose speaks of red currant, plum, earth and a hint of the sauvage. There is lovely detail to the sleek and beautifully refined middle weight flavors that retain a fine sense of delineation before terminating in a balanced, classy and mineral-inflected finish. Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2014

As always, this is arguably the wine that most clearly exemplifies Jean Michel’s style and talent and I cannot recommend it highly enough.  Spicy, velvety, stony, and in need of time to soften and start to emerge.  If I could only buy one Guillon 2014, this might be it.  Better from 2024; hold as long as you like.

Sweet Spot Outstanding " Moderate amounts of wood and menthol characters frame the spicy and earthy dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the velvety and exceptionally rich medium-bodied flavors that coat the mouth on the powerful, stony and impressively persistent finale. Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2009 Product #27807 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2009 Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2009

Probably the least "open" of the 2009 Brovias, but promising great things 5-7 years from now!

"Iron, tar, scorched earth, smoke and game waft from the glass as the 2009 Barolo Garblèt Sue' opens up. The ferrous notes typical of this site come through loud and clear in the 2009. At the same time, the 2009 is surprisingly soft. At times delicate and even ethereal, the 2009 appears to be heavily marked by the vintage."  Antonio Galloni 90 points

"Wild, ripe aromas of red berries, plum, truffle and game. Rich and broad but currently less shapely and delineated than the Villero, not to mention less showy. Shows a larger structure reflecting its Castiglione origin, but this is also harder to taste today. The big tannins are less fine than those of the Villero. Elena Brovia points out that this wine is made in exactly the same way as the Villero and Garblet Sue, so the differences are entirely a function of terroir."International Wine Cellar 91+? points

Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Evelyn's 2011 Product #28856 (In Stock)
Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Evelyn's 2011 Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir Evelyn's 2011

Triple 92 point reviews still massively under-rate how fantastic this, Doug Tunnel's top wine, is from the lovely 2011 vintage.  Getting better and better and plenty of life in front of it.

"Sexy spice- and mineral-accented red fruits and floral pastilles on the intensely perfumed nose, with a suave incense quality building with air. Silky, sweet and penetrating, offering nervy raspberry and cherry flavors that gain weight and spiciness with air. Smoke and allspice qualities come up on the subtly tannic finish, which lingers with excellent persistence and focus. Here's 2011 at its best: fresh, precise and energetic, with outstanding clarity and emphatic red fruit character."  Vineous (Reynolds) 92 points

"Fresh dark berries shadowed by their high-toned distilled counterparts, wreathed in bittersweetly perfumed iris and gentian, and spiced with nutmeg and cardamom lend Tunnell’s 2011 Pinot Noir Evelyn’s complex and intriguing allure. This cuvee uniting Pommard and Dijon clones and named in honor of his mother is almost creamy in feel (so much for those canards about Ribbon Ridge and stems conducing to abrasive tannin!) even if – encouragingly – a sense of fine-grained tannin is evident in the finish. There is a marrow-rich sense of carnal depth; while a faint hint of caramelization – reflecting the slightly higher percentage of new oak here than in other Brick House cuvees – is entirely well-woven into this seductive, rich, yet in vintage-typical manner vibrant, fundamentally juicy, and mouthwateringly saline performance."Wine Advocate 92 points

"A fresh, vibrant and enticingly open-textured red, offering tangerine-accented raspberry and cherry flavors, hinting at black tea as the complex finish lingers effortlessly."Wine Spectator 92 points

Quilceda Creek Red Columbia Valley 2012 Product #28955 (In Stock)
Quilceda Creek Red Columbia Valley 2012 Quilceda Creek Red Columbia Valley 2012

A stunner; perhaps the best ever for this second wine of Washington State's benchmark Cabernet producer.  The CVR Red is made from barrels that didn’t quite fit with the main Cabernet Sauvignon blend.  The quality is very high – anything not “excellent” at Quillceda Creek is sold off in bulk – but these barrels are a tad more forward, open, and fruit-centered than made sense for the main wine.  Of course, those characteristics – plus the much reduced price! – make them a perfect choice for drinking younger at big savings!

“A smoking effort that shows the beauty of the 2012 vintage, Golitzin's 2012 CVR Colombia Valley Red Wine is made from a declassified blend of most Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller parts Merlot and Malbec. It's offers a brilliant, almost Bordeaux-like, bouquet of sweet cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite and hints of toast that flows to a full-bodied, layered, seamless Cabernet that has integrated acidity, sweet tannin and a great finish that doesn't lack for richness or persistence. Already hard to resist, it will nevertheless continue to drink nicely for another decade or more.”Wine Advocate 93 points
