Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009 Product #27806 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009 Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009

The compact soils and south/southest-facing exposure of this site in Serralunga helped Ca' Mia retain fine freshness even as it ripened into plush, velvety, richness. The first to sell out of the 2009s and likely to be the first 2009 gone, too.

"In this hot vintage the 2009 Barolo Ca' Mia appears to have handled the weather best of all the wines in the range, which isn't that much of a shock, considering that the more compact soils of Serralunga are at an advantage in warmer years. Firm tannins provide the backdrop for a serious core of dark red fruit, flowers, iron, tar and licorice, all of which seem to literally jump out of the glass. The 2009 has more than enough fruit and sheer depth to age well for a number of years."  Antonio Galloni 92 points

"Captivatingly fresh, primary aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers are accented by a sappy note of blood orange; reminded me a bit of a topnotch Burgundy from Vosne or Chambolle. Sweet and thick but with lovely acidity giving the wine a strong impression of inner-mouth tension. A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Wonderfully elegant and perfumed Barolo from a south/southeast-facing vineyard that is spared the hottest afternoon sun."International Wine Cellar 94+? points

"The intensity and richness is bountiful, and seductive aromatic layers of dried fruit, licorice, tar, button mushroom and tobacco lift off the glass with building intensity. The wine’s texture is firmer and the length is decisively more rewarding. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."Wine Advocate 93 points

Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009 Product #28422 (In Stock)
Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009 Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009

"The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano brings together the best qualities of the vintage, with a solid core of intense fruit, expressive aromatics and a measure of tannic heft that will keep the wine fresh and vibrant for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice and leather notes flesh out on the huge, voluptuous finish. In 2009, the Montestefano is fabulous."  Antonio Galloni 94 points

"Good healthy deep red. Musky, reduced nose offers dark raspberry and a whiff of menthol. Big, broad and sweet in the mouth, with plush raspberry fruit given shape and lift by lovely vinosity. This rather powerful, even massive, Barbaresco opened beautifully in the glass to show a deep sweetness and lovely perfume. The long, slowly mounting finish betrays no rough edges. I'd lay this down for five years."International Wine Cellar 92(?+) points

The regular bottles of this “baby Chambolle-Musigny” are terrific, but the magnums are very special indeed.  Jean-Michel Guillon and his son/co-winemaker Alexis bottled a dozen magnums of 2012 Bourgogne Rouge for us, and as far as we know, you can’t buy them anywhere else in the world.  Right now, it’s an impressive presentation of a delicious wine for parties or special dinners.  In about 5-10 years, though, it will be a big bottle of expensive-tasting red Burgundy from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s top vigneron that you got for a steal of a deal price!

Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Product #25940 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006

As seductive a young Cru Barolo as we've seen from 2006. Sure, it wants a decade, but decant it for an hour and you'll be blown away tonight!

"Cerequio. Brunate. Cannubi. These are the Italian equivalents of Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Chambertin; in other words, among the most precious vineyards anywhere in the world. Damilano’s 2006 Barolo Cannubi emerges from the glass with surprising richness and weight. Berries, flowers and spices flow effortlessly from this rich, textured Cannubi. The wine shows quite a bit more depth than is usually the case for a vineyard that tends towards the feminine, but the textural elegance and silkiness on the mid-palate and finish serve to provide a sense of proportion. Fine, elegant tannins frame the close. This is another fine effort from Damilano. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Starts out supple, with the smooth texture framing black cherry, bitter almond and licorice notes. A firm base of tannins is offset by sweet fruit, as this glides to a lingering aftertaste of tobacco, spice and cherry. Best from 2013 through 2032."Wine Spectator 94 points

Vietti Barbera D'alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2010 Product #26716 (In Stock)
Vietti Barbera D'alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2010 Vietti Barbera D'alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2010

From nearly 100 year old Barbera vines in the heart of a Barolo vineyard, this once again shows off fantastic concentration and power for this varietal.  Dark, concentrated, black cherry and raspberry fruit with accents of aged balsamic, chocolate, tar, smoke, and licorice root.  The first time Wine Spectator reviewed this wine (it's 5th vintage in 1997, they gave is a whopping 95 point rating and said, “Who knew Barbera produced this quality?”  This is a fine opportunity to get to know one of Italy’s great wines – and one that’s a joy to drink as well!

"Vietti's 2010 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia shows the pedigree of these old vines. Rich and explosive in style, yet buffered by fabulous minerality, the 2010 Vigna Vecchia stands out for its exceptional balance and polish. This is a great vintage for one of Piedmont's icon wines." Warre's Vintage Port 2011 Product #27175 (In Stock)
Warre's Vintage Port 2011 Warre's Vintage Port 2011

One of my favorites in 2011, the texture here is fantastic, with the ripe, dense, flavors offset by bright acidity and firm minerality.  Masses and masses of grip, but the tannin is fully ripe and velvety.  Hard to resist right now.

"Extremely floral and fruity with hints of lilacs and crushed fruit. Full body with refined tannins integrated with a solid core of fruit, and a rich, round texture. This is lightly sweet and follows through to a long, long finish. 3,000 cases produced of this mechanically trodden wine. Try in 2022."  James Suckling 96 points

"Offers seamless flavors of kirsch, chocolate, dark plum and allspice, fresh and elegant, with a towering structure and intense red berry accents. Unctuous and long on the finish, showing loads of grip. Best from 2030 through 2060."Wine Spectator 96 points

Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2009 Product #28252 (In Stock)
Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2009 Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2009

Like 2011, the 2009 harvest was quite warm, yielding softer wines than in 2004 or 2006.  While this 2009s won’t go the 20+ years in cellar that Valdicava usually will, it compensates by being much more open and accessible today.  It’s a rich, deeply flavored, wine that shows the dark fruit, fresh floral, and dark chocolate flavors Valdicava is known for, but in a more silky, elegant, package than usual.  Marvelous wine.

“A silky, fine 2009 Brunello with light berry, chocolate and prune character. Medium to full body. Ultra-fine tannins. A wonderfully crafted Valdicava along the same lines as the excellent 2004. Drink or hold.”  James Suckling 94 points

“Vincenzo Abbruzzese’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a dense and full-bodied rendition that delivers an enormously floral bouquet of crushed rose petal and dried potpourri with background tones of cinnamon stick, root beer and caramelized brown sugar. Past vintages of this wine have shown great power and structure in the mouth, but the 2009 vintage is veiled and nuanced instead. There’s a silky and tight quality to the tannin backed by a long, polished feel. The wine never feels bulky or dense. It will be interesting to see how it evolves, but if you don’t want to wait, it can also be consumed in the near-term. Drink: 2016-2024.”Wine Advocate 92+ points

En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Carinyena Cuvee #2 2012 Product #28389 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Carinyena Cuvee #2 2012 En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Carinyena Cuvee #2 2012

When Silvia went to blend her ripe, old-vine, Priorat Grenache and Carignan for the 2012 cuvee, a few barrels just refused to fit in.  Too burly, powerful, and exhibitionist to play nicely with the rest of the cellar, Silvia had no choice but to throw all these barrels into a tank and let them work things out for themselves.

So, what happened?  Well, here’s the total of my first note on tasting ENV Cuvee #2:  “KABOOM!”  As in all caps big and genuinely explosive.  The theme here is chocolate covered cherries, blueberries and plums munched on while spit-roasting an herb covered lamb. The savory meat juice and smoke notes just get stronger with air, but the powerful fruit gains freshness and keeps pace without effort.  Big, muscular, flavors need plenty of ripe acidity and powerful tannins to stay in balance, and that's what you'll find here as well.  It’s fun to taste now and big, grill roasted, flavors could stand up to it today, but you really ought to follow it for the next 20 years or so to get all that Cuvee #2 has to offer.

Priorat at this level of concentration, power, cellar potential and class sells for $100+ in today’s market (actually, Priorat that’s wildly inferior to this sells for $100+, too, but that’s another story).  This is a steal for the quality, but just 323 bottles (27 cases) exist for the whole world.  Don’t kick yourself for missing it.

Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2012 Product #28424 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2012 Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2012

Not just Grand Cru, but the very best Grand Cru in all of Chablis, the famous sun-washed, chalk-laced, hill of Les Clos.  Fruit this ripe, powerful, and perfect deserves extra attention, so this is the only wine at the Domaine to receive new oak (about 15%).  Very Grand Cru on the nose where deep aromas of green apple, lemon oil, apple and peach blossom, and wet chalk swirl in the glass.  In the mouth, powerful and deep with riper fruit – golden apple, pineapple, yellow peach – plus a good dose of lime and lime zest.  Dense in the middle and long on the ripe but salty/savory finish where fruit and stone flavors linger. Give it an hour of air now or cellar for 5 years and then enjoy for 10 more.  Brilliant – and less expensive than any good 1er Cru Puligny!

"Really tropical fruit, and a bit of oak here – distinguished and distinctive. Very immediate and open – a real crowd pleaser without sacrificing authenticity and typicality."  JancisRobinson.com 17.5/20 points

"From a .53 ha parcel planted in 1962 and matured in mostly older oak. This is a bit more elegant compared to the Vaudésir with its ripe, pure and pretty aromas of lavender, apple, wet stone and white orchard fruit scents. There is fine density to the powerful and muscular broad-scaled flavors that manage to retain a fine sense of detail on the palate staining and wonderfully persistent finish. This is presently quite backward it will need a few years to find its center." Allen Meadows 91-93 points

"Medium yellow straw in color, this barrel fermented (95% used, 5% new) Grand Cru reveals refined aromatics with elements of citrus zest, stony minerals, and a light touch of honeyed oak. It's densely flavored with layers of rich fruit and hints of light sandalwood, finishing long with rich extract. This is a complex and elegant wine that will drink well over the next decade."i-Wine Review 94 points

Dom Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Vergers 2012 Product #28695 (In Stock)
Dom Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Vergers 2012 Dom Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Vergers 2012

The step up to 1er Cru is obvious in the greater depth, concentration, and complexity compared to the Village wine, but there’s no loss of immediate deliciousness!  “Generous” is the theme here, applying to the peach, almond, butter aromas, the deep stone fruit and hazelnut flavors, and especially the creamy but still vivid texture.  Well, “seductive” applies, too, and I see little reason to feel guilty about drinking this now through 2022.

"Charming smoky scent and super-fresh green apple. Blossom and even a bit of honey too. Really pleasing and open knit. Good chewiness too, promising age worthiness."  JancisRobinson.com 17+/20

"Aromas of lemon drop and flowers, complicated by a musky quality. Then supple, pliant and rich on the palate, with sappy, ripe stone fruit flavors showing a bit of youthful aggressiveness. Plenty of texture here."International Wine Cellar 89-92 points

"The 2012 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vergers comes from 0.72-hectares of vine planted in 1972 and this year it had the highest natural acidity level of the crus and was the last to be picked. The nose is very refined with delicate white peach and almond scents wafting gently from the glass. The palate is rounded and generous on the entry. Here, there is good weight in the mouth with a satisfying peach and citrus peel finish. This is delicious."Wine Advocate 91 points

"Another exceptionally good wine from Richard and Laurence Fontaine. Yellow straw gold in color, the wine shows ripe orchard fruit with flint aromas. The wine is fleshy and mouth filling with beautifully integrated fruit and oak. It shows rich flavors of ripe fruit and a hint of hazelnut, excellent acidity, and a firm, long finish."i-Wine Review 93 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2012 Product #28845 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2012 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2012

In 2012, Champeaux stands out among Guillon's 1er Cru wines for its depth of concentration and beautiful texture.  Much more open and accessible than Champonnets today, Champeax impresses with it's blend of ripe dark fruit, classic Gevrey earth and iron-ore, and hints of floral elegance.  A lovely wine that is rapidly gobbling up its wood influence and will drink nicely through 2030 or so.

"Here too there is moderate wood surrounding the relatively deeply pitched dark berry fruit, humus, animale and soft floral hints. The fresh and cool middle weight flavors possess a refined mouth feel thanks to the sophisticated tannins that also serve to shape the supple and balanced finish. This forward effort is really quite good and while the wood is not invisible as it resurfaces on the finale, I think that it will integrate in time."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #29025 (In Stock)
Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Mike Hirby picked a great time to gain access to Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Napa’s most exciting sites – the Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga.  A great Calistoga site like this - across the road from Frediani and Araujo’s world-famous Eisele Vineyard – was the key to making good wine. Blending in juice from Oakville and adding dashes of Merlot and Cabernet Franc for plushness and aroma allowed Mike to make one of the very best 2011 Napa Cabernets we’ve tasted at any price point.

It takes a little time in the glass or a vigorous swirl to coax the aromas out of this very young Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, but then you'll be rewarded with very pure, deep, scents of red currant, black cherry, coffee, dark chocolate, spicebox and crushed herb. It's a big wine in the mouth, with rich, powerful, Napa Cab flavors of currant, blackberry, mocha, vanilla, spice, cedar, violet and more.  The powerful flavors and rich texture are nicely balanced by fine-grained tannins and juicy acids, making this an outstanding match for grilled or roasted meat today and an even better candidate for improvement in cellar over the next decade plus. This is a very winning bottle of Cabernet that frankly outperforms most of the $100+ 2011s we've tasted to date. An exciting, delicious, and deeply satisfying bottle of Napa Cab.

Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2009 Product #27807 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2009 Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2009

Probably the least "open" of the 2009 Brovias, but promising great things 5-7 years from now!

"Iron, tar, scorched earth, smoke and game waft from the glass as the 2009 Barolo Garblèt Sue' opens up. The ferrous notes typical of this site come through loud and clear in the 2009. At the same time, the 2009 is surprisingly soft. At times delicate and even ethereal, the 2009 appears to be heavily marked by the vintage."  Antonio Galloni 90 points

"Wild, ripe aromas of red berries, plum, truffle and game. Rich and broad but currently less shapely and delineated than the Villero, not to mention less showy. Shows a larger structure reflecting its Castiglione origin, but this is also harder to taste today. The big tannins are less fine than those of the Villero. Elena Brovia points out that this wine is made in exactly the same way as the Villero and Garblet Sue, so the differences are entirely a function of terroir."International Wine Cellar 91+? points

Quilceda Creek Red Columbia Valley 2012 Product #28955 (In Stock)
Quilceda Creek Red Columbia Valley 2012 Quilceda Creek Red Columbia Valley 2012

A stunner; perhaps the best ever for this second wine of Washington State's benchmark Cabernet producer.  The CVR Red is made from barrels that didn’t quite fit with the main Cabernet Sauvignon blend.  The quality is very high – anything not “excellent” at Quillceda Creek is sold off in bulk – but these barrels are a tad more forward, open, and fruit-centered than made sense for the main wine.  Of course, those characteristics – plus the much reduced price! – make them a perfect choice for drinking younger at big savings!

“The 2012 CVR Columbia Valley Red Wine is a declassified blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with splashes of Merlot and Malbec. It offers up plenty of classic Quilceda character with notions of blackberry liqueur, toasted spice, graphite and licorice as well as full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. Already supple and approachable, yet with notable tannin structure, it will deliver the goods on release, and over the following decade or more. Drink 2014-2024.”Wine Advocate 92-94 points
