Made only in select vintages, Evelyn’s is simply the best wine Doug Tunnell can make from the best barrels in the cellar.  It represents Doug’s homage to his mother, Evelyn, who was infamous in the little Willamette Valley town of Carleton for racing her Kentucky Whip horse across the small bridge outside of town as the sun came up all through the summer of ’26.  It always includes all six Pinot Noir clones Doug grows.  As he says, “Not all vintages lend themselves to fashioning a velvet glove around an iron–fisted structure.”  2012 was definitely an Evelyn’s year.

This reminds us of Patty Green’s 2012 Notorious, another “best of cellar” blend (and the highest rated wine of the vintage so far in Steve Tanzer’s IWC).  It’s loaded with sweetly spiced blackberry, raspberry and black cherry fruit framed by a whiff of wood smoke, allspice and freshly turned earth.  It’s definitely riper and more sweetly fruited than the 2011, but still beautifully pure and elegant.  Dried orange peel and a dark floral note emerge with air and carries on through the long, succulent, finish where firm tannins provide support.  Like most 2012s, this is tempting right now but do try to give a few bottles 3-5 years in cellar to experience everything it has to offer.  Magnificent.

One of my favorites in 2011, the texture here is fantastic, with the ripe, dense, flavors offset by bright acidity and firm minerality.  Masses and masses of grip, but the tannin is fully ripe and velvety.  Hard to resist right now.

When Silvia went to blend her ripe, old-vine, Priorat Grenache and Carignan for the 2012 cuvee, a few barrels just refused to fit in.  Too burly, powerful, and exhibitionist to play nicely with the rest of the cellar, Silvia had no choice but to throw all these barrels into a tank and let them work things out for themselves.

So, what happened?  Well, here’s the total of my first note on tasting ENV Cuvee #2:  “KABOOM!”  As in all caps big and genuinely explosive.  The theme here is chocolate covered cherries, blueberries and plums munched on while spit-roasting an herb covered lamb. The savory meat juice and smoke notes just get stronger with air, but the powerful fruit gains freshness and keeps pace without effort.  Big, muscular, flavors need plenty of ripe acidity and powerful tannins to stay in balance, and that's what you'll find here as well.  It’s fun to taste now and big, grill roasted, flavors could stand up to it today, but you really ought to follow it for the next 20 years or so to get all that Cuvee #2 has to offer.

Priorat at this level of concentration, power, cellar potential and class sells for $100+ in today’s market (actually, Priorat that’s wildly inferior to this sells for $100+, too, but that’s another story).  This is a steal for the quality, but just 323 bottles (27 cases) exist for the whole world.  Don’t kick yourself for missing it.

Not just Grand Cru, but the very best Grand Cru in all of Chablis, the famous sun-washed, chalk-laced, hill of Les Clos.  Fruit this ripe, powerful, and perfect deserves extra attention, so this is the only wine at the Domaine to receive new oak (about 15%).  Very Grand Cru on the nose where deep aromas of green apple, lemon oil, apple and peach blossom, and wet chalk swirl in the glass.  In the mouth, powerful and deep with riper fruit – golden apple, pineapple, yellow peach – plus a good dose of lime and lime zest.  Dense in the middle and long on the ripe but salty/savory finish where fruit and stone flavors linger. Give it an hour of air now or cellar for 5 years and then enjoy for 10 more.  Brilliant – and less expensive than any good 1er Cru Puligny!

"From a .53 ha parcel planted in 1962 and matured in mostly older oak. This is a bit more elegant compared to the Vaudésir with its ripe, pure and pretty aromas of lavender, apple, wet stone and white orchard fruit scents. There is fine density to the powerful and muscular broad-scaled flavors that manage to retain a fine sense of detail on the palate staining and wonderfully persistent finish. The step up to 1er Cru is obvious in the greater depth, concentration, and complexity compared to the Village wine, but there’s no loss of immediate deliciousness!  “Generous” is the theme here, applying to the peach, almond, butter aromas, the deep stone fruit and hazelnut flavors, and especially the creamy but still vivid texture.  Well, “seductive” applies, too, and I see little reason to feel guilty about drinking this now through 2022.

The fresh and cool middle weight flavors possess a refined mouth feel thanks to the sophisticated tannins that also serve to shape the supple and balanced finish. "In this hot vintage the 2009 Barolo Ca' Mia appears to have handled the weather best of all the wines in the range, which isn't that much of a shock, considering that the more compact soils of Serralunga are at an advantage in warmer years. Firm tannins provide the backdrop for a serious core of dark red fruit, flowers, iron, tar and licorice, all of which seem to literally jump out of the glass.
