Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009 Product #28422 (In Stock)
Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009 Produttori Del Barbaresco Montestefano 2009

"The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano brings together the best qualities of the vintage, with a solid core of intense fruit, expressive aromatics and a measure of tannic heft that will keep the wine fresh and vibrant for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice and leather notes flesh out on the huge, voluptuous finish. In 2009, the Montestefano is fabulous."  Antonio Galloni 94 points

"Good healthy deep red. Musky, reduced nose offers dark raspberry and a whiff of menthol. Big, broad and sweet in the mouth, with plush raspberry fruit given shape and lift by lovely vinosity. This rather powerful, even massive, Barbaresco opened beautifully in the glass to show a deep sweetness and lovely perfume. The long, slowly mounting finish betrays no rough edges. I'd lay this down for five years."International Wine Cellar 92(?+) points

Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Puligny 1er Les Referts 2008 Product #25224 (In Stock)
Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Puligny 1er Les Referts 2008 Marie Bernard (Marc Morey) Puligny 1er Les Referts 2008

Labeled for us under the Marie Bernard name to comply with Virginia's restrictive distribution rules, this is the exact same wine sold under the Marc Morey label in France and the rest of the USA.

“Outstanding. Here there is a completely different aromatic expression with its nose of white peach, spiced pear and vague suggestion of the exotic that merges into textured and highly seductive flavors that possess a satiny mouth feel on the pure and energetic finish. This is a really wonderful effort with laser-like focus and a beguiling sense of overall harmony.” Allen Meadows 91 points

Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Sechet 2011 Product #27592 (In Stock)
Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Sechet 2011 Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Sechet 2011

A beautiful Chablis that's showing now with fantastic concentration and salty minerality.

"This is not only more elegant but more complex as well with a much greater emphasis on the typical Séchet citrus elements. There is good richness to the round and relatively generous medium weight flavors that possess a seductively textured mouth feel. There is a lovely minerality and underlying tension to the very dry, balanced and persistent finish. This should be good and offer solid mid-term cellaring potential."Allen Meadows 90-92 points

"The Vincent Dauvissat 2011 Chablis Sechet delivers a striking sense of lift and transparency allied to infectious juiciness. Succulent and refreshing grapefruit, lime and yellow plum are wreathed in buddleia and high-toned herbal extracts, then mingled on a buoyant (almost delicate) and silken-textured palate with the saline-sweet savor of raw scallop. The saliva-inducing, umami-rich animal aspects are perfectly complemented by almost infinite juiciness of citrus and pit fruits that are transparent to seductively floral and shimmeringly crystalline-mineral nuances. This long-finishing beauty should not be missed now, in its youth, but I imagine it will continue to cast its spell through at least 2018."Wine Advocate 93 points

Vietti Barbera D'alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2010 Product #26716 (In Stock)
Vietti Barbera D'alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2010 Vietti Barbera D'alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia 2010

From nearly 100 year old Barbera vines in the heart of a Barolo vineyard, this once again shows off fantastic concentration and power for this varietal.  Dark, concentrated, black cherry and raspberry fruit with accents of aged balsamic, chocolate, tar, smoke, and licorice root.  The first time Wine Spectator reviewed this wine (it's 5th vintage in 1997, they gave is a whopping 95 point rating and said, “Who knew Barbera produced this quality?”  This is a fine opportunity to get to know one of Italy’s great wines – and one that’s a joy to drink as well!

"Vietti's 2010 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia shows the pedigree of these old vines. Rich and explosive in style, yet buffered by fabulous minerality, the 2010 Vigna Vecchia stands out for its exceptional balance and polish. This is a great vintage for one of Piedmont's icon wines." Warre's Vintage Port 2011 Product #27175 (In Stock)
Warre's Vintage Port 2011 Warre's Vintage Port 2011

One of my favorites in 2011, the texture here is fantastic, with the ripe, dense, flavors offset by bright acidity and firm minerality.  Masses and masses of grip, but the tannin is fully ripe and velvety.  Hard to resist right now.

"Extremely floral and fruity with hints of lilacs and crushed fruit. Full body with refined tannins integrated with a solid core of fruit, and a rich, round texture. This is lightly sweet and follows through to a long, long finish. 3,000 cases produced of this mechanically trodden wine. Try in 2022."  James Suckling 96 points

"Offers seamless flavors of kirsch, chocolate, dark plum and allspice, fresh and elegant, with a towering structure and intense red berry accents. Unctuous and long on the finish, showing loads of grip. Best from 2030 through 2060."Wine Spectator 96 points

Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2012 Product #28424 (In Stock)
Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2012 Dom Des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2012

Not just Grand Cru, but the very best Grand Cru in all of Chablis, the famous sun-washed, chalk-laced, hill of Les Clos.  Fruit this ripe, powerful, and perfect deserves extra attention, so this is the only wine at the Domaine to receive new oak (about 15%).  Very Grand Cru on the nose where deep aromas of green apple, lemon oil, apple and peach blossom, and wet chalk swirl in the glass.  In the mouth, powerful and deep with riper fruit – golden apple, pineapple, yellow peach – plus a good dose of lime and lime zest.  Dense in the middle and long on the ripe but salty/savory finish where fruit and stone flavors linger. Give it an hour of air now or cellar for 5 years and then enjoy for 10 more.  Brilliant – and less expensive than any good 1er Cru Puligny!

"Really tropical fruit, and a bit of oak here – distinguished and distinctive. Very immediate and open – a real crowd pleaser without sacrificing authenticity and typicality."  JancisRobinson.com 17.5/20 points

"From a .53 ha parcel planted in 1962 and matured in mostly older oak. This is a bit more elegant compared to the Vaudésir with its ripe, pure and pretty aromas of lavender, apple, wet stone and white orchard fruit scents. There is fine density to the powerful and muscular broad-scaled flavors that manage to retain a fine sense of detail on the palate staining and wonderfully persistent finish. This is presently quite backward it will need a few years to find its center." Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Product #28442 (In Stock)
Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Relic Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

The last wine Mike Hirby releases from each vintage, and the most impressive Artefact Cabernet to date.  The wine’s backbone is fruit from the tiny (3 acre) Corona Vineyard in the hills just west of Oakville.  Mike describes the site as “a moonscape, with tiny shale pebbles going who-knows how deep.”  The poor soils and small berries here give a wine of fantastic intensity and power.  You’ll find deep aromas of crushed blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate, and sweet spices and flavors to match.  There’s plenty of structure to support the lush fruit, and while you probably should hold this for 3-5 years, it’s hard to resist right now with a rare steak!

“78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc and 8% malbec): Aromas of cassis, briary blackberry and bitter chocolate, lifted by a violet topnote. Large-scaled, chewy, mountain-style wine (it's from the Corona vineyard at the top of the Oakville Grade), with a medicinal quality to its flavors of black cherry, blackberry and licorice. This youthfully musclebound cabernet finishes with substantial tannins and very good energy. Serve it with a rare steak now or, better yet, hold it for five years for more complexity. These small, thick-skinned berries ripen late, notes winemaker Mike Hirby.”International Wine Cellar 92(+?) points

Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2009 Product #28293 (In Stock)
Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2009 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2009

While the Guigal single vineyard “La La” bottlings were primary drivers of Cote Rotie’s return to prominence in the 1980s, the much more affordable Brune et Blonde has become this region’s calling card.  A blend of grapes from both the “Blonde” side of Cote Rotie – where wines are more elegant and graceful – and the “Brune” side – for power and tannic structure – this bottling delivers classic Cote Rotie aromas and flavors with an extra level of richness and softness from the warm 2009 harvest.

"The 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde was harvested early in 2009. Comprised of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier, aged 36 months in equal parts new and 1-year-old barrels, it offers gorgeously complex aromas of sour cherries, blackberry, underbrush, violets, olive and steak tartare to go with a seamless, fresh and lively palate feel. Already approachable and a downright sexy example of the appellation, it should drink nicely for 12-15 years."Wine Advocate 92 points

“A rich, fleshy style, offering pastis-soaked plum, blackberry and currant fruit at the core, backed by ganache and singed juniper notes that add texture and length on the finish, with a terrific iron spine. Should age nicely.”Wine Spectator 93 points

Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009 Product #27806 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009 Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2009

The compact soils and south/southest-facing exposure of this site in Serralunga helped Ca' Mia retain fine freshness even as it ripened into plush, velvety, richness. The first to sell out of the 2009s and likely to be the first 2009 gone, too.

"In this hot vintage the 2009 Barolo Ca' Mia appears to have handled the weather best of all the wines in the range, which isn't that much of a shock, considering that the more compact soils of Serralunga are at an advantage in warmer years. Firm tannins provide the backdrop for a serious core of dark red fruit, flowers, iron, tar and licorice, all of which seem to literally jump out of the glass. The 2009 has more than enough fruit and sheer depth to age well for a number of years."  Antonio Galloni 92 points

"Captivatingly fresh, primary aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers are accented by a sappy note of blood orange; reminded me a bit of a topnotch Burgundy from Vosne or Chambolle. Sweet and thick but with lovely acidity giving the wine a strong impression of inner-mouth tension. A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Wonderfully elegant and perfumed Barolo from a south/southeast-facing vineyard that is spared the hottest afternoon sun."International Wine Cellar 94+? points

"The intensity and richness is bountiful, and seductive aromatic layers of dried fruit, licorice, tar, button mushroom and tobacco lift off the glass with building intensity. The wine’s texture is firmer and the length is decisively more rewarding. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."Wine Advocate 93 points

Dom Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2010 Product #26235 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2010 Dom Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles 2010

"This is perhaps ever-so-slightly riper still than the Vaudésir, yet the expressive nose remains cool and fresh with aromas of white flowers, tidal pool and citrus nuances that merge gracefully into full-bodied and overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that also possess plenty of acid-buffering dry extract on the tight, intense and highly enduring finish. Excellent cellar potential."Allen Meadows 92-94 points

"The 2010 Chablis Grenouilles, on the other hand, is much more closed down. Today it is the wine’s crystalline minerality that comes through most clearly. Hints of jasmine, green pears and apples develop in the glass, but this is a wine that needs time before its full personality begins to emerge. It is above all else a wine of finesse and, at times, an almost feminine vulnerability. Anticipated maturity: 2014."Wine Advocate 94+ points

Dom Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2010 Product #26236 (In Stock)
Dom Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2010 Dom Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2010

"Hints of sulfur reduce the present attractiveness of the otherwise complex and well-nuanced nose that displays notes of oyster shell, white pepper and dried flowers. Like the Grenouilles, this is also very tight and backwards with its beautifully detailed and borderline painfully intense flavors that culminate in a serious, linear and palate staining finish. This impeccably well-balanced effort should also amply reward 6 to 10 years of development."Allen Meadows 92-94 points

"Michel’s 2010 Chablis Les Clos comes across as big, rich and powerful. It is rather viscous on the palate, as there was a touch of botrytis in the vineyard. In 2010, it is the vintage that speaks most loudly. I can’t say this is an especially typical Les Clos, but it is a beautiful wine if taken on its own terms. Nectarine, peaches, exotic flowers and anise meld together on the textured finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013+."Wine Advocate 93 points

A voluptuous wine for the year, the 2011 Chardonnay boasts impeccable balance and plenty of creaminess. It will appeal most to readers who appreciate bold, rich Chardonnays. Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Product #24547 (In Stock)
Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo Rocche 2006

"Large-scaled, chewy and sweet on the palate; bigger and deeper than the 2005, with impressive depth of fruit and sheer volume. Finishes with huge chewy tannins that saturate every millimeter of the palate, but this infant appears to have the fullness and breadth to support its structure."International Wine Cellar 92 points

“This is a strong set of 2006 Barolos from father and son team Andrea and Fabio Oberto. I had a chance to taste the 2006s next to the estate’s 2005s, and it is pretty clear the 2006s possess an extra dimension of generosity over their older brethren that, among other things, results in better integration of the oak.

The 2006 Barolo Vigneto Rocche is the alter-ego of the Brunate. Where the Brunate is powerful the Rocche is refined, where the Brunate is intense, the Rocche is subtle. Floral red fruits, menthol and minerals are some of the notes that emerge from this high-toned, aromatic Barolo. The aromas and flavors seem to resonate off each other like voices in a cathedral, creating a sensation of endless discovery as the wine opens up in the glass. The structure of the vintage comes through on the energetic, vibrant finish. Here, too, patience is key, but this is shaping up to be another magnificent Barolo from Oberto. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.”Wine Advocate 93+ points

Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2009 Product #25181 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2009 Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2009

You've heard about 2009's ripeness, but great winemakers (like Pascal Maillard) retained plenty of acidity and mineral notes to create truly exciting white Burgundy.  Most of the famous hill of Corton is planted to Pinot Noir, but Pascal grows Chardonnay in a small vineyard he grafted over from Pinot Noir after noticing how chalky and full of limestone the soil was. You'll find plenty of 2009's famous ripeness here - rich fruit flavors of golden apple, pineapple, and a touch of pineapple - but also zesty citrus acidity, chalky mineral, and a dash of fresh chervil and mint. Long in the mouth and on the finish and almost impossible to resist now, even if it will be better in 10 years.

Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010 Product #27204 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010 Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010

A top-notch, Grand Cru white Burgundy here from first sniff to last sip.  There's a touch of reduction on the nose - as there should be in a wine built to age - but also oodles of salty caramel, grilled pear, roasted hazelnut, tangy butter and crisp apple scents.  True Grand Cru size and texture here, as the wine fills your mouth and coats your palate with a lush, almost oily, texture.  On opening, the flavors are still fairly compact in this young, young, beauty but intense ripe peach and apple fruit, butter, and warm nut elements show immediately over layers of chalky mineral and fresh mint.  Give it some air, the the palate explodes with notes of nectarine, grilled pineapple, lemon curd, and even more mint joining the show.

The big, rich, texture, is perfectly balanced by bracing acidity and loads of chalky mineral on the firm, fresh, finish where a note of tangy peach and more hazelnut goes on and on.  It's amazing for a wine of this ripeness, power, and size to have so much saline, mineral, freshness - but, then, that's why it's a Grand Cru!  Let it sit for 3-4 years and enjoy for 20.

Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Product #25940 (In Stock)
Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006 Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2006

As seductive a young Cru Barolo as we've seen from 2006. Sure, it wants a decade, but decant it for an hour and you'll be blown away tonight!

"Cerequio. Brunate. Cannubi. These are the Italian equivalents of Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Chambertin; in other words, among the most precious vineyards anywhere in the world. Damilano’s 2006 Barolo Cannubi emerges from the glass with surprising richness and weight. Berries, flowers and spices flow effortlessly from this rich, textured Cannubi. The wine shows quite a bit more depth than is usually the case for a vineyard that tends towards the feminine, but the textural elegance and silkiness on the mid-palate and finish serve to provide a sense of proportion. Fine, elegant tannins frame the close. This is another fine effort from Damilano. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Starts out supple, with the smooth texture framing black cherry, bitter almond and licorice notes. A firm base of tannins is offset by sweet fruit, as this glides to a lingering aftertaste of tobacco, spice and cherry. Best from 2013 through 2032."Wine Spectator 94 points
