- Clos Du Caillou Cotes Du Rhone Bouquet Des Garrigues 2012 Product #28890 (In Stock)
Always one of our very favorite Cotes du Rhones, and in 2012 a wine that outshines many much more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape! It’s a blend of 85% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre, all aged in tank and neutral barrel. Grenache raspberry and sweet cherry aromas and flavors take center stage, but there’s plenty of black olive tapenade, crushed herb, and black pepper complexity. Very pure, very delicious.
“The 2012 Cotes du Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues is a brilliant looking tank sample. Aged all in foudre, it offers up ripe, pure notes of crushed stone, pepper and earthy notes to go with both red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and textured, with sweet tannin, it’s one serious Cotes du Rhone that will evolve for 4-7 years. Drink 2014-2021.”Wine Advocate 90-92 points
- Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Safres 2009 Product #28002 (In Stock)
With a couple of extra years in bottle, this is drinking beautifully right now and makes a great match for roasted meats, ratatouille, or earthy washed rind cheeses. You can certainly age it further – but why wait?
"Bright red. Very fresh and intensely aromatic, projecting scents of red berries, lavender and spices, along with a hint of white pepper. Juicy and incisive, offering nervy strawberry and raspberry flavors lifted by a zesty spice nuance. This silky, seamless, lithe Chateauneuf finishes with impressive clarity and snap and might well pass for a ripe New World pinot noir."International Wine Cellar 91 points
"This modestly sized estate of just under 25 acres in the northeastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape has been run by Sylvie Vacheron since her husband’s tragic death in 2002. The dark plum/ruby/purple-tinged 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is showing better from bottle than it did last year from barrel. Reveals classic notes of herbes de Provence, cherry jam and lavender in a full-bodied, opulent, sexy, open-knit style typical of many 2009s. This broad, rich Chateauneuf is ideal for drinking over the next 10-12 years."Wine Advocate 91 points
- Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Safres 2010 Product #26572 (In Stock)
"This estate, which encompasses considerable acreage, produces Cotes du Rhones and Chateauneuf du Papes. It has nearly 25 acres in the former appellation as well as a remarkable 42 acres in the actual clos (or walled vineyard) of Caillou. Part of that is only 500 meters from the Rayas vineyard. The cellars and the clos are located in the eastern/northeastern sector of the appellation. The vineyards have been biodynamically farmed since 2003, and Domaine du Caillou is one of the reference points for Chateauneuf du Pape as well as Cotes du Rhone. The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres (100% Grenache aged in foudre) comes from a lieu-dit called Les Bedines. Exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color, super ripe fruit and a deep, full-bodied, layered style, it may be the finest Les Safres offering I have yet tasted. Drink it over the next 10-15 years." Wine Advocate 94 points
"Offers gorgeous feel and purity, with a caressing, velvety edge to the bright, vivid linzer torte, blackberry pâte de fruit and plum sauce flavors. The long, sleek finish lets incense and toasted spice notes flitter through, with good latent grip. Best from 2013 through 2023. 949 cases made."Wine Spectator 94 points
- Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Safres 2012 Product #28888 (In Stock)
A stunner of a Chateauneuf, les Safres is about 95% Grenache with just a touch of Syrah. Full of dark raspberry and black cherry fruit with layers of spice, floral, and crushed stone accents, this is silky and poised now and will get fleshier and more rich with time.
“Bright ruby. Mineral-tinged redcurrant, raspberry and spicecake aromas, with a hint of candied lavender. Clean and zesty, showing intense red fruit and floral character, assertive spiciness and very good clarity. Finishes silky and long, with vibrant berry character, soft tannins and a lingering note of tangy minerality.”International Wine Cellar 91-93 points
“Also almost all Grenache and coming from compacted sand soils (Safres), the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres shows superb complexity with notions of white pepper, creamy licorice, black cherry and dusty stone-like minerality on the nose. Seamless and elegant, with building, fine tannin, it-s a polished, impressively endowed effort that will have 10-12 years of longevity. Drink 2015-2024.”Wine Advocate 91-93 points
- Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve 2012 Product #28889 (In Stock)
As always, one of the most impressive wines in all of Chateauneuf, this marries the intense ripeness of old-vine Grenache to the earthy complexity and power of Mourvedre. Only 70 cases made and about half that imported to the USA. Probably the most pure power you’ll find in any Chateauneuf of the vintage.
“Opaque ruby. Expressive cherry compote, incense and licorice aromas are complemented by potpourri, vanilla and smoky minerals. Seamless, juicy and deep, offering expansive black raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a suave floral pastille quality. Shows impressive density with zero excess weight, finishing sweet, broad and very long. Potentially one of the wines of the vintage.”International Wine Cellar 93-95 points
“The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is flat out gorgeous. Meaty and rich, with floral-tinged notes of blackberry, raspberry, melted licorice, ground garrigue and roasted meats, this full-bodied, rich and decadent effort has perfect integration of its fruit, acidity and tannin, with no hard edges and building richness. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and have upward of two decades of longevity. Drink 2016-2032.” Wine Advocate 94-97+ points
