Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Product #28936 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2013

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expesive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality.

The excitement starts on the nose, where you’ll find generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clemintine and crushed chalk. Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses, or with grilled fish and fruit salsa.  It will age surprisingly well if you can keep your hands off it now!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Product #29763 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2014

We’ve said it before, and it still applies here:  If you don’t love this robust, poised, and oh-so-flavorful red, then perhaps Cotes du Rhone just isn’t for you.  This is the second straight vintage Philippe made this wine as a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.

Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2014 Product #29765 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2014 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2014

If you thought Philippe’s 2013 rosé was good, just wait until you try the 2014!  A touch darker in color and one notch more concentrated and intense than most pink wines from Provence, but just as full of fruit and refreshment.  Unusually for a rosé from this part of the Rhone valley, it’s 90% Mourvedre (made famous by Domaine Tempier and other Bandol estates) and just 10% Grenache.

Lovely dark pink in color, the generous aromas feature bright cherry, passion fruit, and wild herb scents. The texture and shape of the wine in your mouth is fantastic, starting soft and silky, exploding into palate coating flavors, and then focusing down with laser-like precision and focus on the mouthwatering finish.  You’ll find plenty of wild strawberry, passion fruit, ripe citrus, fresh herb and just a touch of earthy Mourvedre flavors running through the wine with mouthwatering watermelon, berry, pink grapefruit and mineral notes on the long, juicy, finish.  A great solo sipper and even better with fresh salads, smoked salmon, or anything with plenty of savory herb and garlic.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2010 Product #29759 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2010 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages La Daurelle 2010

Always one of our favorite and very best value Rhone reds in the store, Philippe Plantevin’s La Daurelle reaches new heights in the great 2010 harvest – a vintage Wine Spectator rated 98 points, the highest ever  the Southern Rhone!  Philippe grows this blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Mourvedre on rocky, clay/limestone, scrubland near his winery in Cairanne and allows it a full 20 days fermentation/maceration time to extract color, structure, and flavor.  Then, one-third ages in used French oak barriques (and the rest in concrete) to mellow a bit and add layers of earthy, meaty, complexity.

La Daurelle serves up fantastic aromas and flavors of raspberry puree, fresh blackberry juice, licorice, garrigue (piney herb), sweet spice, dried violet, ink, roasted meats, and more.  That’s as pure usual, but in 2010 the texture is extraordinary, especially in a region better known for rustic reds.  This is all silk and velvet:  silky on entry and as it glides across your palate to the long, rich, finish where a pile of crushed velvet tannins provide support for food and further aging.  Yes, it’s pretty captivating right now at 5 years from the vintage, but this will continue to improve and delight for at least the next 10 years.  At about 35% less than most Gigondas and 40-60% under even “value” Chateauneuf, the price/quality ratio here is almost more stunning than the wine.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Product #28308 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2009

Philippe Plantevin grows this wine in the stony, wind-swept, vineyards on the barren flats outside the village of Cairanne, due west of Rasteau and north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  It’s a blend of concentrated, intense, Grenache (75%) and muscular, meaty, Syrah (25%) harvested together in late September.  After sorting, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and then given a long, slow, fermentation in concrete vats and stainless steel tank.

Philippe considers the Cairanne to be his top wine, and it’s always the most muscular, powerful, wine in the cellar. In the warm 2009 vintage, it shows just a touch more sauve than usual and is delicious right now! The aromas show off black raspberries and cherries, fresh turned earth, warm stones and a touch of spice. It's a big, rich, wine in the mouth with oodles of black fruit and accents of garrigue, cracked pepper, and stone.  The finish is firm and mouthwatering, but the ripe fruit and black pepper notes keep pumping through on the generous, savory, finish. Pair it with grilled or roasted meats now and be sure to save some to enjoy in 2019!
