- Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Product #13994 (In Stock)

Eric learned to make Champagne as assistant winemaker at Krug, and the Krug style and influence is all clearly on display here (but, fortunately, not the Krug price tag!). This year, it’s a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, all grown by Eric in his family’s Grand Cru vineyards in Ambonnay. It’s a blend of base wines from up to 10 great Champagne vintages – including 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 – fermented in oak barrels (20% new) and given 8 years maturation in bottle on the lees. This release was disgorged in June 2012.
As always, this is a big-boned, powerful Champagne that’s fantastically complex and, thus, a little hard to describe. As English Master of Wine Jancis Robinson said of a past release, it’s “a deluxe, oak-aged, extremely complex, smouldering, intellectual, food-friendly blend of wines from all the best vintages of the last decade.” Tiny, persistent, bubbles rise up from this golden toned wine, with generous aromas of macadamia nuts, toffee, coffee, and toast jumping from the glass. In the mouth, it’s a full-bodied, powerful, wine that retains a clear sense of grace and complex flavors of raspberry, Asian pear, crisp apple, wildflower honey, acacia flower, and plenty of mineral. Delicious and brilliant. - Eric Rodez Ambonnay Grand Cru Millesime 2000 Product #22610 (In Stock)

One of the best values in true Vintage Champagne we’ve ever seen. Like the Cuvee Crayeres, this is a 50/50 blend of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. About half of the base wine was aged in small oak barrels, including 10-15% new wood. The result is a powerful, deep, wine with layers and layers of flavor.
The 2000 Vintage Champagne opens with super rich aromas of strawberry, almond, hazelnut, and fresh toast. The palate is very rich and creamy, but somehow fine and delicate, too. The complex flavors feature notes of almond and grilled nuts with ripe apple fruit and a bright saline note for complexity and freshness. The finish is crisp, toasty, and very long. A great example of how oak can add depth and power to Champagne without intruding or adding woody flavors. - Eric Rodez Empreinte De Terroir 1998 Pinot Noir Product #21270 (In Stock)

Extremely Limited! Eric Rodez's top wines - the Empreinte de Terrior - are intended to showcase the distinctive quality and character of his Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards. This wine is 100% Pinot Noir grown by Eric on a small plot of vineyards in the middle of the hill of Ambonnay. It is very serious fizz - every bit the equal of Tete de Cuvee wines from Champagne’s most famous winemakers but at a fraction of the price.
The wine shows a copper-tinged color with extremely fine bubbles. Aromas of cherries, red flowers, and toast explode from the glass. In the mouth it’s extremely deep, rich, and robust with complex flavors of red fruits, graphite and baked bread. The flavors drive to a seemingly endless finish as hints of red raspberry and toast linger. While fascinating to drink on its own, this would pair wonderfully with duck or any dish featuring wild mushrooms. Distinctive and delicious.
