While the rating is a tad lower than deserved, the description is right on. A delicious, juicy, bottle of Barbera for sipping or table.
"The 2010 Barbera d’Alba is an attractive, mid-weight wine laced with sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices. It is best enjoyed over the next few years, while the fruit retains its freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014."Wine Advocate 89 points
- Vajra Langhe Rosso PN Q497 (Pinot Noir) 2009 Product #26326 (In Stock)

Yes, it's a Pinot Noir from Italy, but think "Gevrey Chambertin meets Sta. Rita Hills" and you'll be better prepared for the nectar in this funky bottle from "traditionalist" Aldo Vajra. The wine comes from the top of Bricco di Vergne, just a touch too high up for Nebbiolo to ripen. Recognizing that most Barolo-lovers view Pinot Noir as a reference-point grape, in 1999 Aldo decided to plant a few acres of Pinot up here to see what would happen.
The results will blow you away. The scents and flavors veer back-and-forth between Burgundian structure and minerality and California juicy fruit and spice. Loads of crunchy ripe raspberry fruit over moist black earth, mushroom and leather with more ripe red fruit welling up from underneath. Firm and focused, this is for the table but will delight any Pinot lover with salmon, duck, or mushrooms. - Vajra Barbera d'Alba Superiore 2009 Product #27188 (In Stock)

As always, one of the very best Barbera from 80+ year-old vines.
"Aldo and Milena Vajra are among the quietest and most introspective of Piedmont’s top echelon growers. It is the wines that do the talking here, and they do that ever so eloquently. The estate’s continued focus on excellence throughout their entire range comes through in spades in these new releases. The estate’s 2009 Barbera d’Alba Superiore is one of the deepest, richest and darkest wines I have tasted from this vintage. Still an infant, it bursts from the glass with raspberry jam, cloves and French oak, all wrapped around a serious, intense frame. Sweet, silky tannins frame the opulent finish. This is a decidedly flashy, extroverted wine for Vajra, uncharacteristically rich and poulet, but beautiful if taken on its own terms. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029."Wine Advocate 92 points
- Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2008 Product #26852 (In Stock)

Remarkably delicious right now, this will probably shut down in 2014 and then re-emerge in glorious fashion around 2018. A stunner.
"Aldo and Milena Vajra are among the quietest and most introspective of Piedmont’s top echelon growers. It is the wines that do the talking here, and they do that ever so eloquently. Vajra’s 2008 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is drop-dead gorgeous. Rose petals, flowers, spices and mint are some of the many, many nuances that unfold as this gracious Barolo opens up in the glass. The 2008 is at once light on its feet yet rich, deep and resonant, expressing the myriad contradictions that are at the heart of what makes Barolo one of the world’s truly icon wines. Today the tannins are a little firm, of course, but there is an inner sweetness to the 2008 that is compelling. This is a fabulous showing from the Vajra family. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038."Wine Advocate 96 points
