Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Product #28309 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $40-$50 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're mature, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

In Jean Michel's outstanding 2012, the lovely aromas of crushed griotte (cherry), red raspberry and wild strawberry get richer and more complex as the wine unfurls with air, a touch of fresh leather emerges, and the nutty, toasty, oak fades into the background.  The palate is much more rich, plush, and luscious than the 12.5% alcohol suggest, with lovely ripeness to the juicy red currant, raspberry and tangy cherry fruit.  Chambolle-Muisgny terroir and 50% new oak work together to provide accents of iron ore, coffee, and fresh earth.  This has excellent length on the palate and finish for Bourgogne.  Give it an hour in decanter now or two-10 years in cellar for maximum pleasure.  A fantastic Bourgogne of true Village character.

"There is enough wood to notice surrounding the pretty and fresh red berry fruit aromas. I like the concentration of the vibrant and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess good depth and fine length on the balanced finish. A good example of the genre." Allen Meadows 86-88 points

Guillon Santenay Les Bras Blanc 2011 Product #28310 (In Stock)
Guillon Santenay Les Bras Blanc 2011 Guillon Santenay Les Bras Blanc 2011

Leave it to Jean-Michel Guillon – whose Bourgogne Blanc comes from the red wine country of Gevrey-Chambertin – to travel all the way south to the decidedly red-wine village of Santenay to make his top estate-grown white!  Here at the southern end of the Cote d’Or, just below Chassagne-Montrachet, warm weather and more clay in the soils usually favor Pinot Noir.  But, an outcrop of chalky limestone in Jean-Michel’s Les Bras vineyard makes this a fine source for rich, ripe, round, Burgundy Chardonnay.

In 2011, the combination of low-yield, ripe, fruit and 100% new oak fermentation and aging turned out something like a delicious cross between rich, buttery, Mersualt and the tangy lemon-curd of Corton.  Generous aromas and flavors of ripe fruits like peach, golden apple, and pineapple get luxurious accents of tangy butter, grilled nuts, brown spice, and a strong impression of just crushed mint.  The way the mint/herb notes weave in and out of the nose and palate is captivating, as is the bright apple-like acidity and chalky mineral that lingers on the mouthwatering finish. Rich, but very precise on the mid-palate and finish and with outstanding focus and length.  A lot of wine for the money.

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008 Product #23793 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008

Burghound “Outstanding Top Value”

A great vintage for this excellent Village level red made from Jean-Michel’s oldest vines – all 50 years old or older.  As always, this delivers plenty of power and structure, but there is an extra level of ripeness and grace here as well.  This will drink nicely with decanting now and really hit its stride in another 5 years.

“From 50+ year-old vines raised in 100% new wood. This is extremely primary, in fact so much so that residual fermentation aromas are still evident though the red berry fruit appears clean and pure and is followed by impressively rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract that confers a beguiling texture to the mouth feel and renders the firm tannins almost invisible on the impeccably balanced finish. Recommended as villages level wines typically do not have this kind of completeness. Outstanding Top Value.”Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Product #26485 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really grabbed us in 2010.  Screams “Gevrey” with its earthy red fruit and note of dusty iron ore but still soft and open enough to give early pleasure.  Excellent value.

"In contrast to the relatively expressive noses of the prior three wines, this is much more serious with brooding aromas of earth, wild red berries and a whiff of humus. There is excellent energy to the detailed and lightly mineral-suffused flavors that possess good ripeness to the structural elements where the finish again displays a wonderful sense of tension and energy."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011 Product #27667 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011

A special cuvee made by and for Jean-Michel's son (and assistant winemaker now) Alexis.  All of the village wines used here are at least 60 years old, and their maturity allowed them to thrive in the difficult 2011 vintage.  Coffee, woodsy mushroom, and cocoa powder notes provide nice accents to the powerful, but pure, dark black fruit.  The middle is dark, deep, and powerful and the masses of ripe tannins do not interfere with a long, layered, finish.  Nice clarity for all of the power here.

"An expressive nose combines oak toast, ripe plum and plenty of pungent Gevrey earth. There is good punch and detail plus better acid balance to the lightly mineral-infused middle weight flavors that deliver good depth and length."Allen Meadows 88-90 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007 Product #27926 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007

While 2007 was a challenging vintage for reds, Jean Michel Guillon rose to that challenge and turned out a bevy of beautiful wines.  His 2007 1er Cru Champonnets was impressive young but now - after 5 years in a cool cellar - is unfolding into something quite beautiful.  Lovely aromas of red flowers, spice, tangy cherry, and smoke open the show.  Then it's silky and pure in the mouth with long and very fine flavors of red berries, flowers, iron, and hints of coffee, spice, and earth.  The tannins provide gentle support and the finish goes on and on.  Delicate, but very Gevrey and ready to drink.

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2009 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2009

Best ever Guillon Champonnets with an amazing velvet texture.

"An elegant and admirably pure mix of red currant and dark pinot fruit is trimmed is a deft touch of wood before sliding gracefully into very rich yet precise medium-bodied flavors that possess a supple and refined mouth feel, all wrapped in an extract rich and strikingly long finish. The wood has not yet completely integrated, particularly on the finish, yet there is so much underlying material that it should not be an issue."Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Guillon Grand Cru Clos Vougeot 2010 Product #26746 (In Stock)
Guillon Grand Cru Clos Vougeot 2010 Guillon Grand Cru Clos Vougeot 2010

Majestic, but very limited.

"From 40+ year old vines and whole cluster fermentation, fermented entirely in a small 100% new wood tank. This is notably riper with even more complex and very fresh aromas of spiced plum and an intense earthiness that also characterizes the delicious, dense and very serious flavors that also exhibit a high degree of phenolic maturity. There is wonderful energy to the balanced and superbly long finish that displays a bit less youthful austerity than I usually find with this wine."Allen Meadows 92-94 points

Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 Product #21066 (In Stock)
Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2006

Clearly showing its pedigree and class, the 2006 Clos Vougeot is a work of art. Big, big aromatics, raspberries, lilacs, incense, figs and brown sugar. A very sexy wine that comes in waves on the palate and should be an early maturing by Grand Cru standards due to its supple and ripe tannins. But who cares when the juice is this good? Tremendous! Drink this 2011 through 2020.

Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Product #23795 (In Stock)
Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008

A classic from the largest and best-known Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote de Nuits, the walled vineyard of Vougeot.  Unlike many wines from this famous site, Guillon’s Vougeot is fully Grand Cru in quality – dark, rich, and super, super, long.  Cellar for another 5-8 years and drink for 20.

“From 40+ year old vines and whole cluster fermentation, fermented entirely in a small 100% new wood tank. As one would reasonably expect, this is much more defined aromatically by earth tones rather than fruit. Dark berry fruit aromas introduce exceptionally rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract levels and an opulent mouth feel yet the hugely long and slightly woody finish tightens up considerably and is quite youthfully austere despite the sap.” Allen Meadows 91-93 points
