Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2011 Product #28112 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2011 Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2011

Jean-Michel Guillon grows this wine in and around the famous red wine village of Gevrey Chambertin on soils with more limestone than Pinot Noir normally loves. Give it a swirl and you'll find luxurious aromas of golden fruit, toasted hazelnut, lemon tart, fresh butter and just a hint of crushed mint.  Take a sip and you'll immediately notice the rich and creamy texture and lush mouthfeel with complex flavors of lemon curd, golden peach, ripe pear, butter, warm nut and salty caramel.  The salty/briny minerality pumps through under the fruit as bright, lemony, acids keep things fresh and focused.  The lingering flavors of wet stones, lemon custard, warm hazelnut, nutmeg and tangy butter sail on and on and on.

The aromas and flavors remind me of Corton Charlamagne, while the mineral drive and focus suggest a top 1er Cru Chablis from a warm vintage - although the price here is 50-150% less than either of those. A rich, deeply, flavored white Burgundy for big foods or even to enjoy on its own now and for 5 or so years.

Guillon Cremant De Bourgogne Blanc De Noirs Product #20934 (In Stock)
Guillon Cremant De Bourgogne Blanc De Noirs Guillon Cremant De Bourgogne Blanc De Noirs

We’re sad to report that this is the final release of what has been one of our favorite and most popular sparkling wines for years and years now.  The story of this wine begins when Jean Michel had to replant a portion of his Pinot Noir vines in the village of Chambole-Musigny.  The young vines produced pretty fruit, but needed a decade or more to develop the power and depth Jean Michel wanted for his red wines. So, he began harvesting the Pinot Noir here a little early, making it into a still white wine, and having a friend help him turn it into a classically made sparkling Bourgogne.

Now the vines used for this fun fizz are graduating into Guillon’s red wine program, so this is the last batch of Cremant he will make.  Snap it up while you can!  The wine starts off  with fine bubbles and generous aromas of fresh berries and toast.  In the mouth, it’s creamy-textured but vivacious, with complex flavors of brioche, biscuit, and earthy spice complenenting the bright red fruit flavors.  Long and lingering on the finish, it’s easy enough to just enjoy on a Tuesday night but a worthy star at a fine dinner party.

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Product #27109 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge 2011

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $40-$50 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're mature, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

The 2011 is wide open right now, bursting with generous aromas of dark cherries, currant, violets, earth and a hint of spice.  In the mouth, round and rich and impeccably balanced with oodles of dark red fruit, roasted coffee, roasted mushroom, and spice.  Given the integration (and price!), it’s hard to believe that 50% of this wine matured in new oak.  The long, lush, and fruit-filled finish completely cloak the fine tannin that will allow this to grow in cellar (if you can hold off drinking it now!).

"A fresh, ripe and expressive nose of violets, earth and various red berry fruit scents introduces rich, delicious and impressively sized flavors that possess good balance on the relatively fine and persistent finish. A quality effort for the appellation."Allen Meadows 85-88 points

Guillon Cote De Nuits Villages Queue De Herung 2011 Product #27663 (In Stock)
Guillon Cote De Nuits Villages Queue De Herung 2011 Guillon Cote De Nuits Villages Queue De Herung 2011

A new wine for Jean Michel and Alexis from vineyards to the south of Nuits Saint Georges.  The limestone soils here give Pinot Noir terrific purity and focus.  This debut is a pretty red Burgundy to drink now and for 5 or so years, with oodles of raspberry, coffee, and red currant aromas and flavors and a silky, sophisticated, texture.  In the months since Burghound wrote his review, the wine has, in fact, gained depth and complexity, but it’s still mostly about the ripe, joyful, fruit.

“A restrained, pure and very pretty nose of dark berries, earth and a hint of humus leads to middle weight flavors that possess both good verve and precision on the solidly persistent finish. There is presently only limited depth but that may change as there is good underlying material.”Allen Meadows 86-89 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008

Burghound “Outstanding Top Value”

A great vintage for this excellent Village level red made from Jean-Michel’s oldest vines – all 50 years old or older.  As always, this delivers plenty of power and structure, but there is an extra level of ripeness and grace here as well.  This will drink nicely with decanting now and really hit its stride in another 5 years.

“From 50+ year-old vines raised in 100% new wood. This is extremely primary, in fact so much so that residual fermentation aromas are still evident though the red berry fruit appears clean and pure and is followed by impressively rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract that confers a beguiling texture to the mouth feel and renders the firm tannins almost invisible on the impeccably balanced finish. Recommended as villages level wines typically do not have this kind of completeness. Outstanding Top Value.”Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Product #26485 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really grabbed us in 2010.  Screams “Gevrey” with its earthy red fruit and note of dusty iron ore but still soft and open enough to give early pleasure.  Excellent value.

"In contrast to the relatively expressive noses of the prior three wines, this is much more serious with brooding aromas of earth, wild red berries and a whiff of humus. There is excellent energy to the detailed and lightly mineral-suffused flavors that possess good ripeness to the structural elements where the finish again displays a wonderful sense of tension and energy."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Guillon Nuits St George Les Chaillots 2010 Product #26487 (In Stock)
Guillon Nuits St George Les Chaillots 2010 Guillon Nuits St George Les Chaillots 2010

From Jean Michel’s only vineyard in Nuits, this fine Village red seems better than many 1er Cru wines I taste from this AOC.  My notes from January:  “I like this a lot. High toned and juicy with refreshing acid and juicy fruit. Bright and energetic. Love the cherry fruit.”

"A discreet application of wood sets off pungently earthy and quite ripe aromas of primarily red pinot and blue berry that give way to rich, suave and delicious medium weight flavors that are shaped by phenolically ripe and firm tannins before culminating in a sappy, balanced and vibrant finish. This is very Nuits in character and not especially elegant but the overall impression is of a villages that delivers excellent quality in an ageworthy package."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011 Product #27667 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011

A special cuvee made by and for Jean-Michel's son (and assistant winemaker now) Alexis.  All of the village wines used here are at least 60 years old, and their maturity allowed them to thrive in the difficult 2011 vintage.  Coffee, woodsy mushroom, and cocoa powder notes provide nice accents to the powerful, but pure, dark black fruit.  The middle is dark, deep, and powerful and the masses of ripe tannins do not interfere with a long, layered, finish.  Nice clarity for all of the power here.

"An expressive nose combines oak toast, ripe plum and plenty of pungent Gevrey earth. There is good punch and detail plus better acid balance to the lightly mineral-infused middle weight flavors that deliver good depth and length."Allen Meadows 88-90 points

Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2008 Guillon Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2008

Burghound “Sweet Spot Outstanding”

Always Jean-Michel’s most forward, silky, and even “sexy” wine, the 2008 bursts from the glass with gorgeous red fruit and spice aromas.  Then, wonderfully giving in the mouth with fine weight and balance.  The best of these for drinking near-term, but with plenty of cellar potential.

“A different and redder but even riper fruit profile leads to rich, round and overtly generous mineral-infused middle weight plus flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration and excellent length. This is a lovely combination of power and finesse. Sweet Spot Outstanding.”Allen Meadows 89-92 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos Prieur 2009 Product #25875 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos Prieur 2009 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos Prieur 2009

The very fine 1er Cru Clos Prieur vineyard sits on the hill just under the Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin.  The heavier soils here lead to a darker, deeper, more savory set of Pinot flavors than you'll find elsewhere in Gevrey, although there's still fine elegance and harmony.

"Here too there is a touch of wood spice that is noticeable but not really invasive. There is good density to the fruit on the sauvage and underbrush suffused nose that, like the La Perrière, is also very Gevrey in character which continues onto the quite finely detailed flavors that are more refined if a bit less complex."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Always one of the most seductive and beautiful wines at Domaine Guillon, the 2010 La Riotte exemplifies what I love about 2010 – deeply ripe but also transparent and oh so elegant.  Lovely.

"A cool, pure and extremely pretty nose of both red and black cherry that is nuanced by soft iron-inflected earth aromas. There is fine concentration and real verve to the beautifully well-balanced flavors that possess impressive depth and length. A moderately structured Morey 1er of refinement. Sweet Spot Outstanding.”Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007

While 2007 was a challenging vintage for reds, Jean Michel Guillon rose to that challenge and turned out a bevy of beautiful wines.  His 2007 1er Cru Champonnets was impressive young but now - after 5 years in a cool cellar - is unfolding into something quite beautiful.  Lovely aromas of red flowers, spice, tangy cherry, and smoke open the show.  Then it's silky and pure in the mouth with long and very fine flavors of red berries, flowers, iron, and hints of coffee, spice, and earth.  The tannins provide gentle support and the finish goes on and on.  Delicate, but very Gevrey and ready to drink.

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Petite Chapelle 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Petite Chapelle 2008

Burghound “Sweet Spot Outstanding”

All of Jean-Michel’s 2008s merit your attention, but if you’re only buying one, this is it.  Petite Chapelle approaches Grand Cru levels of concentration, depth, and complexity but at a price that’s very reasonable even for a 1er Cru.  And the finish this year sails on and on and on…

“From 50+ year-old vines in 100% new oak but with lower toast levels. Visible but not bothersome wood sets off bright, elegant and fresh red pinot fruit aromas trimmed in subtle wet stone notes that complement well the refined and sophisticated middle weight flavors that culminate in a cool, balanced and wonderfully long finish. This is also a lovely effort with a beguiling mouth feel of precision and tension that is clean and dry without leaning toward the commercial. Sweet Spot Outstanding.”Allen Meadows 90-92 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2010 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle 2010

From 50 year-old vines in an outstanding 1er Cru vineyard that always (at least with Jean Michel) teeters on Grand Cru quality in part because it’s farmed and made just like the Grand Cru.  My notes from January: “Magnificent. Silky and elegant and packed with fruit. Violets and blackberry and supple if massive tannin. Slate and smoked mineral linger on.”

"A very subtle application of wood does not interfere with the transparency of the cool, pure and elegant black cherry liqueur aromas. There is equally good transparency to the rich and beautifully detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess truly lovely vibrancy on the ripe, racy and ultra-pure finish. This velvet-texture beauty is worth a long look. Sweet Spot Outstanding."Allen Meadows 91-93 points

Guillon Gevry-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnets 2000 Product #10952 (In Stock)

This was a difficult vintage.  The vines set a big crop of big bunches of big, thin-skinned, berries.  Humid weather made rot a constant challenge, ripening went slowly, and then it rained late.  Like all top growers, Jean Michel ended up leaving a large portion of his fruit on the ground in the vineyard, threw away more on the sorting table, and then had to manage fermentations carefully to extract what the grapes had to offer without overwhelming the gentle fruit with hard tannin.

And now, 13 years later, it’s blindingly obvious that he was successful.  No, it’s not a “great” wine, but it’s certainly utterly charming and pretty, with gentle red berry fruit framed by notes of coffee, fresh earth, and iron.  Lovely to sniff and delicious to drink, and soft and easy on the finish where just enough tannin for food remains.  A delicious, mature, red Burgundy to enjoy now – 2017 or so.

Majestic, but very limited.

"From 40+ year old vines and whole cluster fermentation, fermented entirely in a small 100% new wood tank. This is notably riper with even more complex and very fresh aromas of spiced plum and an intense earthiness that also characterizes the delicious, dense and very serious flavors that also exhibit a high degree of phenolic maturity. Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2007 Product #22580 (In Stock)
Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2007 Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2007

When we tasted this with Jean Michel in early 2008, he proclaimed it the best Clos Vougeot he'd ever made.  And while still a bit youthfully tight today, spend a little time with it and you'll see what he means.  There's fantastic depth of aroma and flavor here - black cherry, fresh turned earth, clove, cinnamon, and black raspberry - married to a stunningly plush, full-bodied, texture.  Although the fruit is very forward today, there's a rock-solid beam of minerality in the middle of the wine that bodes well for development over the next 10-15 years.  Wines from the Clos Vougeot can often be disappointing, but Guillon's 2007 demonstrates clearly why this famous vineyard deserves Grand Cru status.

Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Product #23795 (In Stock)
Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008

A classic from the largest and best-known Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote de Nuits, the walled vineyard of Vougeot.  Unlike many wines from this famous site, Guillon’s Vougeot is fully Grand Cru in quality – dark, rich, and super, super, long.  Cellar for another 5-8 years and drink for 20.

“From 40+ year old vines and whole cluster fermentation, fermented entirely in a small 100% new wood tank. As one would reasonably expect, this is much more defined aromatically by earth tones rather than fruit. Dark berry fruit aromas introduce exceptionally rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract levels and an opulent mouth feel yet the hugely long and slightly woody finish tightens up considerably and is quite youthfully austere despite the sap.” Allen Meadows 91-93 points
