Hanzell Chardonnay is one of Sonoma’s greatest, but it always needs a few years to open up and start to show. So, the winery has created a new (in 2007) wine that is meant to deliver pleasure right on release. The best, most open, barrels of Chardonnay that don’t quite make the cut for the long-lived Estate wine give kind of a “baby Hanzell.” In 2010, you’ll find lovely aromas of white flowers, citrus blossom, and tangy apple fruit. In the mouth, there’s plenty of Hanzell concentration, but also generous flavors of crisp apple, lemon peel and wet stones. Tastes a bit like a generous Chablis from a warm vintage with a long, stony, finish.

One of the oldest operating wineries in Sonoma, Hanzell delivers Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that blend Burgundian elegance with Sonoma ripeness and depth. Like all Hanzell estate wines, this 2009 Pinot is built to cellar (and needs a couple of hours of air right now). Complex aromas of pomegranate and cherry with accents of rose petal and spice. With air, orange peel and sweet tobacco notes unfold to match the deep flavors of blackberry, ripe red fruits, and spice. A citrus oil note and squirt of acid keeps everything in balance and the fine tannins will support another decade or more in cellar.
