Maillard Savigny-les Beaune Rouge 2009 Product #27948 (In Stock)
Maillard Savigny-les Beaune Rouge 2009 Maillard Savigny-les Beaune Rouge 2009

An absolutely classic example of this terroir with the extra richness of 2009. Lovely and generous aromas of griottes (cherries) plus a touch of coffee and oak spice.  Fresh and bright on the palate but with plenty of richness to the ripe cherry, wood smoke, coffee, fresh earth and red plum flavors.  Pure velvet on the finish, this is delicious now but will go another 10 years with no problem.

Maillard Meursault Vielles Vignes 2010 Product #27203 (In Stock)
Maillard Meursault Vielles Vignes 2010 Maillard Meursault Vielles Vignes 2010

You can literally see the purity here in a wine that's clear as a bell with a brilliant straw yellow color.  Classic Meursault aromas of French butter, toasted nuts, green apples, and ripe stone fruits.  Then a stunning blend of richness and purity in the mouth, with layers and layers of butter, grilled nuts, smoke, sweet pear, golden apple, and just a touch of mint.  The mineral and chalk notes that start in the mid-palate expand on the long finish where salty caramel and sun warmed orchard fruit flavors linger on and on over refreshing green apple acidity and more crushed mint notes.

Of course, this will get better and better over the next decade plus, but I'm hard pressed to understand how you could resist drinking up the better part of a case now with steamed lobster, seared scallops, or any dish featuring mushrooms or toasted nuts.  A great bottle of Meursault from vines aged 30-40 years (and some 65+) - the best ever, I think, from Pascal Maillard - at a very strong value price.

Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2006 Product #22385 (In Stock)
Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2006 Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2006

This has always been a favorite from Pascal’s cellar, and it clearly shows the class and grace of a 1er Cru site in Aloxe-Corton.  With a few years aging, it's just become richer, deepr, and much more interesting.  The wine opens with a complex nose of sappy cherry, plum skin, mushroom, spice and a touch of red flower.  In the mouth, it’s focused and silky with complex flavors of ripe red cherry fruit framed by a mineral streak and a nice dash of earthy, smoke and coffee.  The cherry and coffee  notes really linger on the long finish, and the wine gets earthier and more layered with air.  Delicious now and with another 10 years in front of it.  Stunning quality for the price.

Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008 Product #25184 (In Stock)
Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008 Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008

Always one of my favorite wines from this address, the 2008 Lollieres flirts with Grand Cru concentration at a price that's low for a good 1er Cru.  The fruit is dark and concentrated this year - black raspberry and cherry - with accents of coffee grounds, sweet spice, smoke, and roasted meat.  At first elegant and silky in the mouth, the flavors fan out nicely on the long, ripe, and energetic finish.  Already delicious with roast duck, this will improve for 10-15 years.

Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2009 Product #25181 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2009 Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2009

You've heard about 2009's ripeness, but great winemakers (like Pascal Maillard) retained plenty of acidity and mineral notes to create truly exciting white Burgundy.  Most of the famous hill of Corton is planted to Pinot Noir, but Pascal grows Chardonnay in a small vineyard he grafted over from Pinot Noir after noticing how chalky and full of limestone the soil was. You'll find plenty of 2009's famous ripeness here - rich fruit flavors of golden apple, pineapple, and a touch of pineapple - but also zesty citrus acidity, chalky mineral, and a dash of fresh chervil and mint. Long in the mouth and on the finish and almost impossible to resist now, even if it will be better in 10 years.

Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010 Product #27204 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010 Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010

A top-notch, Grand Cru white Burgundy here from first sniff to last sip.  There's a touch of reduction on the nose - as there should be in a wine built to age - but also oodles of salty caramel, grilled pear, roasted hazelnut, tangy butter and crisp apple scents.  True Grand Cru size and texture here, as the wine fills your mouth and coats your palate with a lush, almost oily, texture.  On opening, the flavors are still fairly compact in this young, young, beauty but intense ripe peach and apple fruit, butter, and warm nut elements show immediately over layers of chalky mineral and fresh mint.  Give it some air, the the palate explodes with notes of nectarine, grilled pineapple, lemon curd, and even more mint joining the show.

The big, rich, texture, is perfectly balanced by bracing acidity and loads of chalky mineral on the firm, fresh, finish where a note of tangy peach and more hazelnut goes on and on.  It's amazing for a wine of this ripeness, power, and size to have so much saline, mineral, freshness - but, then, that's why it's a Grand Cru!  Let it sit for 3-4 years and enjoy for 20.

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Product #24541 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2006

In January 2011, a group of us sat around a table over a long dinner in Puligny-Montrachet blind tasting Burgundies at virtually every level imaginable.  In the middle of a flight of Grand Cru reds from some of Burgundy’s biggest names, a decanter of this made its appearance.  Immediately, there was much snorting, sighing, and delight everywhere, and someone looked at Pascal Maillard, sitting to my left, and said, “Pascal, I think this could be your Corton-Renardes.”  Pascal’s eyebrows shot up and he snorted, “This is not my wine.  My wine is not this good.”  Another sniff and sip:  “If this is my wine, I’m not charging enough!”

The wine was, of course, Pascal’s 2006 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, and it was easily the red  wine of the night.  Pascal thought it was Clos Vougeot from high on the hill, and there’s something to that comparison.  The aromas are super lush and generious, full of sweet black cherry, blood orange, browned shitake mushroom, and smoky stones.  In the mouth its rich and full; dark cherry, spiced raspberry, coffee, and smoked meat flavors all appear along with a feral note that marks this as Corton-Renardes.  Very long in the mouth, the sweet spiced fruit gains support from super ripe, sweet, tannin and a little raspberry juice lingers on the finish.  Pascal does, in fact, charge too little for a wine of this quality, so enjoy it before he comes to his senses!

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Product #26601 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!
