Red Beaumes de Venise - as opposed to the sweet white Muscats that made the village famous - are a hidden Rhone Valley treat. The unusually iron-rich soils give these blends of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre an almost chocolaty richness and density. Corinna Faravel's example is textbook, made from certified organic grapes, fermented in concrete, and aged in tank and old large barrels. Black and red raspberry fruit, chocolate/spice, a touch of garrigue and a nicely mineral finish make this delicious and satisfying.
