Paul D Rose of Zweigelt Blauberger 2014 Product #29854 (In Stock)
Paul D Rose of Zweigelt Blauberger 2014 Paul D Rose of Zweigelt Blauberger 2014

The hot pink package gives you a pretty good clue about young Paul Direder preferred style of rosé – subtle it ain’t.  Made from a direct press of juicy Zweigelt and the rarely seen blending grape Blauberger, the aromas of just crushed cranberry, ripe watermelon and tangy strawberry fruit jump from the glass.  The flavors are equally exuberant and a bit wild, with watermelon Jolly Rancher, strawberry puree, and tart pie cherry flavors careening across your palate on a slick bed of lemon/lime acidity.  Overtly fruity but dry, tingling, and mouthwatering, you could certainly slosh some of this into a plastic tumbler and slug it back poolside or after mowing the lawn with great satisfaction.  But, just try it on a picnic with deviled eggs, potato salad and cold fried chicken (or wurst if you’re feeling authentic), and you’ll wonder how such an oversized, 1.0 liter, bottle can get empty quite so fast.

Paul D Zweigelt 2014 1.0l Product #29855 (In Stock)
Paul D Zweigelt 2014 1.0l Paul D Zweigelt 2014 1.0l

Paul’s 2014 Zweigelt is a juicy, lipsmacking, red that has heft enough for burgers or pork off the grill but still retains the supple fruitiness needed to shine with a good chill.  The aromas and flavors showcase summer-ripe blackberry, black plum, and dark cherry with Zweigelt’s unique hint of clove-like spice (all from the grape – no oak here).  It’s fresh, medium-bodied (just 12.5% abv), and full of fruit and spice flavors that keep on pumping out over a lightly tannic finish and a lingering hint of cherry pit and licorice on the finish.  Try it with anything from spicy chicken wings to lamb curry to simple picnic foods – but do try it while it’s such a great deal!

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grunschnabel 2014 Product #29781 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grunschnabel 2014 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grunschnabel 2014

The Steininger family call this wine “Grünschnabel” – literally a young duck (a “green beak”) but better understood as “whipper-snapper” or “newbie”  - because it’s the first wine bottled and released each year, just in time for summer refreshment.  Grown in sites dotted across Kaptal – perhaps Austria’s best Grüner Veltliner region – fermented and raised in cool stainless steel, it’s bottled and released young and fresh.

An early summer release, but one full of late summer aromas and flavors:  ripe peach, spicy pear, and Ginger Gold apple fruit accented by dashes off fresh sugar snap pea, fresh ginger, white pepper, and a tangy/herbal dash of Meyer lemon.  It smells and tastes great, and feels even better on your palate.  The wine enters with a bright, snappy, tingle and then drapes flavor and refreshment over your palate like a pretty summer tablecloth falls across a picnic table.  Then, the lemony acid pops out to scrub everything clean, leaving behind clean, refreshing, notes of snap pea, Granny Smith apple, white pepper, and a hint of wet river stone.  A wine that will cool you off, make you smile, and pull you back for another sip – or thirst-quenching gulp!

Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2013 Product #28636 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2013 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2013

The Gmörk vineyard lies on loess and gravel soils in Austria’s excellent Wagram region.  There’s plenty of sunny warmth in this South-facing site, so the fruit ripens beautifully.  But the nearby Danube river channels cool air down from the Northwest, slowing the growing cycle and letting the grapes develop extra flavor and aroma while retaining fine freshness and acidity.  Anton has all the grapes harvested by hand at the peak of ripeness, even taking on the extra cost of making multiple passes through the vineyard when necessary.  It’s hard work and the kind of expense you rarely see in a Grüner intended to sell for under $20.

The 2013 Gmörk is the best release we’ve tasted so far (we’ve sold every vintage since 2008), delivering an extra notch of fresh fruit, a good helping of lime zest, and fine, bracing, minerality.  While it was a touch fleshier and less vivicous than the 2013, the Washington Post’s three-star review of the 2009 seems spot on:  “This delightful wine offers a fine example of what wine lovers call minerality: subtle flavors of lime zest with a hint of peach and nuances of talc and stone. It conjures an image of vine roots stretching through rocky soil, reaching for the essence of the earth.  Three Stars.”

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2013 Product #28584 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2013 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2013

Like its stablemate “Grand Grü,” which we feature every year around Thanksgiving, Karl and Brigitta Steininger’s all tank Kamptal Grüner has been a staff and customer favorite here for years.  Start with the wonderful, summery, aromatics of yellow peach, peach skin, and wet stone minerality that really jump out of the glass.  Then notice the ripe fruit flavors – peach puree, yellow pear, apricot and golden apple – framed with touches of baking spice, citrus zest, and river stone.  Finally, enjoy how the peach turns tangy and a touch of lime and green apple come out on the finish and make your mouth water and face break out into a smile.  All this flavor intensity in a wine that hovers comfortably around 13% abv and costs much, much, less than you’d expect.

“Lifted, pear-scented freshness dominates the nose while the palate is soft but has a pleasing and linear citrus focus. This is poised and offers sophisticated refreshment.”Wine Enthusiast 92 points

If you want to know what $30 Austrian Riesling tastes like without spending that much, this is your wine. Vibrant aromas of fresh picked peach and apricot dusted with lime zest and crushed stone lead to intense fruit and mineral flavors and a long, dry, salty stone finish.  Plenty of crackling energy here, but also enough generosity of fruit to make this easy to drink.  A steal.

Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013 Product #29323 (In Stock)
Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013 Hillinger Pinot Gris 2013

Our first thought when tasting this Pinot Gris was “wow!”  This intensely flavored white from Austria’s Burgenland, an area mostly known for reds, is no wussy, bland Pinot Grigio.  It’s hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks with a bit more skin contact than is usual for a white wine.  This allows the wine to pick up more color and flavor from the grapes’ grayish-pink skins.  The aromas are enormously appealing and perfect for fall – pear, nutmeg, ripe, golden apple, and a little hint of ginger.

About 5% of the wine is fermented in used barriques, rounding out the wine’s edges, and giving that sophisticated hint of spice to its flavor profile.  On the palate, those delicious spicy pear flavors carry through.  This wine packs a ton of richness and flavor into a very reasonable 13% ABV.  It finishes snappy and fresh, and that little bit of ginger kicks right back in.  This is the perfect cocktail party white to get everyone’s mouth watering, but its intensity and weight allows it to stand up to pretty robust food.

A great introduction to the joys (and stellar value) of Riesling from Austria.  From a stony vineyard, this ultra pure and clean Riesling delivers intense aromas and flavors of ripe peach, lime zest, and fresh apricot with stony mineral notes and brisk, mouth-cleansing, acidity.  A touch of spice on the juicy finish makes this a great choice for Thanksgiving - but once you've tried this bright but easy-drinking white, you'll find yourself reaching for it again and again.

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2012 Product #29780 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2012 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2012

About as fine a cookout red as you’ll find this year, the 2012 Apetlon serves up savory aromas of smoke, sour cherry, sweet blackberry, licorice and lavender.  The flavors are bright and juicy – roasted strawberry and blackberry puree – with complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to handle sausages or burgers and has enough rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to excel with lamb.  Equal parts Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt, all aged 12 months in oak.

“Aromatic overtones of tiny black elderberries give an edge to the smoky red fruit encountered here. A well-judged, sonorous tone of warm oak runs along the seams, lending structure and framing some floral, peppery notions and plump red cherry of this classy and still very refreshing and bright red. With a little time, its aromatics will develop even further... if you can wait.”Wine Enthusiast 93 points

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Steven Holl Loisium 2012 Product #29537 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Steven Holl Loisium 2012 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Steven Holl Loisium 2012

The interesting label design for this wine comes from NY architecht Stephen Holl's inception of the Loisium cellars located in the Austrian town of Langelois. The area is an inviting introduction into the winemaking process of the Kamptal region, which Steininger has been heavily involved with.

This Gruner Veltliner delivers a powerful aromas of peach flowers, white pepper, and orange zest. The Loisium is a bit of a richer style Gruner, but still maintains crisp acidity. Flavors of pretty meyer lemon, yellow apple and tart pineapple fill the palate. A long finish keeps you wanting to drink more. A great wine to have with sushi.

"The Loisium is the wine museum in Langenlois in which the Steininger family is partner. This wines comes from the vineyard next to the museum. It’s brightly fruity, a delicately layered wine, full of citrus and apricot fruit flavors, lively and ready to drink. Screwcap."Wine Enthusiast 88 points

Steininger Sauvignon Blanc Sekt 2013 Product #29782 (In Stock)
Steininger Sauvignon Blanc Sekt 2013 Steininger Sauvignon Blanc Sekt 2013

The Steininger family is best known here for their snappy, dry, and still Gruner Veltliner and Rieslings.  In Austria, though, they're also known as one of the premier sources of fine Champagne-method sparkling wines.  We've enjoyed their Gruner Veltliner fizz for years, and this fruit-filled Sauvignon Blanc sparkler is just too much fun (and far too delicious) to let the Austrian's monopolize!  You'll find loads of ripe, refreshing, Sauvignon Blanc character here, with zesty pink and white grapefruit, green melon, fresh apple, and a hint of fresh cut grass aromas and flavors.  The secondary fermentation in bottle and aging on the lees adds a touch of depth in the form of hints of toast and yeast and - of course - plenty of zippy bubbles. Everything comes together on a fruit-filled, mouthwatering, finish.  About as much fun as a bottle of wine can be and a perfect pool-side refresher.

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2013 Product #29611 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2013 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Gru 2013

Karl and Eva Steininger make a range of delicious wines from Austria’s best white grape, and they intend the Grand Grü to be the top of their line.  The name is a fun play on words – evoking both the French concept of “Grand Cru” quality and the Steininger’s belief that this is a “Grand” Grüner Veltliner!  Fruit for this wine comes from the Steininger’s best vineyard and is harvested in very late September or October.  The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large Acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging.

Pour a glass and you’ll meet generous aromas of creamy ripe pear, peach, and apricot.  Take a sip and you’ll find autumn fruits – golden pear and apple – plus lime zest and citrus with a dash of baking spice and hints of classing Grüner white pepper.  The texture is creamy and rich with plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and refreshing.  The finish is long, mouthwatering, and features a hint of lime, ginger and spice as it lingers.  Rich and round enough to handle the full range of Thanksgiving Dinner favorites and clean and juicy enough to keep you coming back for more.

So, what happens when you take a great still wine – in this case, the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Kamptal– and give it a little fizz?  Pure joy ensues!

Steininger is Kamptal’s top producer of sparkling wines and one of the very best in all of Austria.  The family specializes in single varietal, single vintage, fizz that showcases the character of the grape and growing season.  The 2013 Grüner Veltliner Sekt is a beauty, at once creamy and full of classic Grüner fruit and terrifically dry and vibrant.  The in-bottle secondary fermentation delivers plenty of fizz, but this still reads “Grüner” with bright apple, green pea, and white pepper notes.  Easy to sip on its own and fun to pair with savory sausage or freshwater fish.
