Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Pinot Blanc 2013 Product #30419 (In Stock)

Once upon a time, Pinot Blanc was often found in Burgundy's vineyards, but it's rare today - and even more rarely exported.  Here's a classic example from Gevrey Chambertin, deftly blending Pinot Blanc's crisp apple/peach fruit with a layer of spice and structure from aging in barrel.  The spice and nutty notes make this an excellent match for fresh fish with butter and almond - or just to sip!

Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2013 Product #29738 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2013 Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2013

Fruit for this wine comes from vineyards in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin – sites where the amount of limestone and chalk are a better fit for rich Chardonnay than powerhouse Pinot Noir.  Yields are always low here, but (as in 2012) were even lower than usual in the difficult 2013 harvest.  The short crop and cool Fall allowed Jean-Michel and his son, Alexis, to harvest perfectly ripe fruit with loads of flavor complexity and acidity at modest (12.5%) alcohols.  A cool fermentation and 10 or so months in (35% new) French oak was just right to extract flavor and texture and add subtle complexity without obscuring the lovely fruit.

In 2013, it’s a generous Bourgogne Chardonnay that delivers luxurious aromas of golden fruit, toasted hazelnut, lemon tart, fresh butter and just a hint of crushed mint. Rich flavors of ripe pear, apple and peach fruit and notes of warm nuts, fresh butter, and salty caramel coat your palate.  The weight and texture are similar to 2012, with a pure intensity and silky richness that’s hard to believe – and almost never found in a “just” Bourgogne.  Everything is just one notch more precise, defined, and clean in 2013, though, with a finish of wet stones, lemon custard, warm hazelnut, nutmeg and tangy butter sail on and on and on. Outstanding value for any Chardonnay fan.

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2013 Product #29375 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2013 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2013

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny. The essence of Chambolle is perfume, and you’ll find oodles of it here with generous scents of griotte cherry, raspberry, smoke, earth, and more wafting from the glass.  It’s the most elegant Bourgogne we’ve seen from Jean-Michel to date, but lacks nothing in intensity, with pure fruit puree, warm spice, and fresh earth flavors coating the palate and sailing on through the long, luscious, finish.  Beautiful with salmon, roast chicken or duck now and sure to pick up more earthy mushroom notes with age.

"A perfumed and very pretty nose combines notes of both red and dark berries along with plenty of earth and sandalwood nuances. There is good vibrancy to the delicious middle weight flavors that possess fine delineation on the lightly mineral-inflected finale. I like the complexity and while this could be enjoyed young there is enough material present to suggest 2 to 4 years of upside development potential."Allen Meadows 86-88 points

Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2013 Product #30031 (In Stock)
Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2013 Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2013

Just Jean-Michel’s third vintage from this fine vineyard located a touch south of Nuits Saint Georges, and easily the very best yet.  Oodles of raspberry, coffee, and red currant aromas and flavors and a silky, sophisticated, texture.  It’s rare to see a wine from a more “humble” site like this have the stuffing to benefit from 100% new oak, but the 2013 handles it with ease.  Delicious now and able to develop through 2023.  Outstanding value here.

"A mildly toasty nose exhibits notes of assorted red berries, earth and a hint of game. There is excellent detail and punch to the delicious middle weight flavors that display a touch of minerality on the balanced and palate coating finish. The supporting tannins are quite ripe and this too will be approachable young if you don't have the patience or desire to wait."Allen Meadows 87-90 points

Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013 Product #30032 (In Stock)
Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013 Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013

A stunning bottle of handcrafted red Burgundy that will delight fans of ripe Russian River or warm vintage Willamette Valley Pinot today and satisfy the most demanding Burgundy fan for years to come.  Jean Michel Guillon purchased this small vineyard about 9 years ago and his hard work has transformed its 30-40 year-old vines into something very special indeed.  He harvests less than 30 hectoliters per hectare of perfectly ripe fruit here – much lower yields than are allowed in Grand Cru vineyards!  And, he treats it like “Grand Cru” wine, too, aging it for 16 months in all new Bertomieu French oak barrels.

Right now it serves up luscious aromas of red currant, cranberry, coffee and.  Beautiful sweet cherry, currant, and red berry fruit take center stage on the palate, with accents of smoke, coffee, and fresh flowers.  The fruit is so sweet and texture of the wine so silky smooth that you might miss the minerality and fine tannins that bode so well for future improvement.  A pretty cranberry note wells up on the velvety finish – and what could be better with Thanksgiving dinner than a touch of cranberry!  A beautiful wine to drink right now and sure to be better and better over the next decade.

"Moderate wood influence frames the fresh and ripe aromas of cassis, plum, earth and a hint of animale. The earth character continues onto the textured medium-bodied flavors that also display a touch of minerality on the solidly complex and persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This mildly oaky effort should also drink well young if desired."Allen Meadows 88-90 points

Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes De Nuits Prieure 2012 Product #29162 (In Stock)
Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes De Nuits Prieure 2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes De Nuits Prieure 2012

Delicious after an hour's decant and built to give pleasure for 10 years or more.  Lovely value.

"The 2012 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Le Clos du Prieure´ is a gorgeous wine at this level. Juicy and expressive, the 2012 jumps from the glass with layers of dark fruit, all supported by serious tannins and overall structure. Iron, dark red fruit and an array of ferrous notes add dimensions of complexity. Today it is rich and imposing to the core."  Antonio Galloni 90-92 points

"The 2012 Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Le Clos du Prieure comes from a 1.10-hectare vineyard close to the village of Arcenant, on rich limestone and marl soils. The nose is open with vibrant, floral black currant and cassis aromas. The palate is energetic with superb acidity and immense purity, the terroir coming through on the mineral rich finish. Outstanding – this comes highly recommended."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Product #29035 (In Stock)
Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012

The most open and immediately generous of Confuron's 2012s, although even better from 2015-2025 or so.

“Good red-ruby. Distinctly reduced, gamey aromas of dark berries, licorice and coffee. Similarly reduced in the mouth, but showing good intensity and an attractive sugar/acid balance to the flavors of black fruits, leather, violet and licorice. With its firm tannins and impression of solidity, this is very Nuits-Saint-Georges.”International Wine Cellar 88-90 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres, from the lieu-dit just south of the village (1.23-hectares of vines between 22 and 46 years old), has a well-defined, floral, elegant bouquet that demonstrates good vivacity, a patina of vanilla oak present but knitted with the fruit. The palate is well balanced with tensile tannins, very fine focus and a clean pure finish with crisp blackcurrant and wild strawberry notes that disguise the latent mineralite. This is an excellent Nuits Saint Georges.”Wine Advocate 90-92 points

“The Les Fleurieres offers rich aromas of dark raspberry and plum with forest floor notes. It has a ripe and flavorful palate and is nicely balanced with excellent acidity and firm tannins on the finish. This wine will be even more enjoyable in two years and will provide drinking pleasure over the next 7-10 years.” i-Wine Review 90+ points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Product #26485 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really grabbed us in 2010.  Screams “Gevrey” with its earthy red fruit and note of dusty iron ore but still soft and open enough to give early pleasure.  Excellent value.

"In contrast to the relatively expressive noses of the prior three wines, this is much more serious with brooding aromas of earth, wild red berries and a whiff of humus. There is excellent energy to the detailed and lightly mineral-suffused flavors that possess good ripeness to the structural elements where the finish again displays a wonderful sense of tension and energy."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Dom Forey Morey Saint Denis 2012 Product #29729 (In Stock)
Dom Forey Morey Saint Denis 2012 Dom Forey Morey Saint Denis 2012

A lovely introduction to the classic Forey style.

"Sweet licorice, mint, new leather, dark red/blackish fruit and minerals emerge from the 2012 Morey-Saint-Denis. A pretty, nuanced wine, the 2012 impresses for its detail and persistence. All the elements fall into place nicely in a village level Morey that will drink well right out of the gate."  Antonio Gallloni 88-89 points

"Here too there is a trace of wood framing the very fresh and ripe red berry fruit and soft earth aromas. There is equally good freshness and ripeness to the attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess good length on the notably firm and mildly rustic finish."Allen Meadows 88 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013 Product #30034 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really shines in 2013.  It’s more plush and fruit-driven than in some vintages with a richness to the texture and finish that will delight right now with food.  Still, lacking nothing in terms of potential for cellaring.

"Outstanding Top Value! Soft but not invisible wood and menthol nuances intertwine with the very ripe essence of black currant, cassis and warm earth nuances. Consistent with the nose, the succulent and seductively textured flavors are notably ripe and blessed with an impressive amount of dry extract that push the moderately firm tannic spine to the background on the ever-so-mildly rustic finish. This is really more Vosne than Gevrey in style but it does deliver very fine quality." Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012 Product #28844 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012

Co-winemaker Alexis Guillon's cuvee is always a bit more elegant than the Domaine's other Village wines, but still has the concentration and depth that only comes from 60+ year-old vines. This is the best vintage for this wine I can recall and the Burghound score is too low.  An outstanding value for now - 2022.

"While the wood is not invisible there is better aromatic complexity present on the dark currant, earth, sauvage and plum suffused nose. There is fine detail to the mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess excellent phenolic maturity to the supporting tannic spine, all wrapped in a robust, powerful and impressively long finish. I like the concentration and if this can add a bit more length it should merit the top of my projected range."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012 Product #28983 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012

From 50-90 year-old vines, this is always the most powerful and complex of Jean-Michel's Village level wines.  The essence of Gevrey-Chambertin here and the structure and balance to develop beautifully in cellar.

"Outstanding Top Value. Here the wood treatment is much more discreet with its cool and pure nose of wild and mixed dark berries, pungent earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is excellent intensity and drive to the overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess excellent volume and phenolic maturity before concluding in a saline, long and ever-so-mildly austere finish. This is well worth considering."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013

Always one of Jean-Michel’s – and importer Olivier Daubresse’s! – favorite cuvees, I really cannot imagine how you wouldn’t guess very good 1er cru when tasting this blind.  It’s a powerful wine that can be enjoyed young for the rich, almost dense, fruit and will add complex earthy/iron ore notes as it matures.  Drink young with air and food or enjoy from 2023-2033 to see all this has to offer.  Perhaps the most outstanding value of this offering.

"Outstanding Top Value. In contrast to the Cuvée Galland this displays buckets of classic Gevrey character with its beautifully complex aromas of game, underbrush, pungent earth and that telltale sauvage quality on the assorted dark berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the middle weight plus flavors that possess equally good complexity on the extract-rich, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is an old school Gevrey villages that will require plenty of patience but if you have it then this is a terrific choice. Highly recommended for the patient." Allen Meadows 89-92 points

"Soft wood sets off the red and black currant suffused aromas that introduce notably finer middle weight flavors that possess a beguiling texture before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, clean, balanced and solidly persistent finish. Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2007

While 2007 was a challenging vintage for reds, Jean Michel Guillon rose to that challenge and turned out a bevy of beautiful wines.  His 2007 1er Cru Champonnets was impressive young but now - after 5 years in a cool cellar - is unfolding into something quite beautiful.  Lovely aromas of red flowers, spice, tangy cherry, and smoke open the show.  Then it's silky and pure in the mouth with long and very fine flavors of red berries, flowers, iron, and hints of coffee, spice, and earth.  The tannins provide gentle support and the finish goes on and on.  Delicate, but very Gevrey and ready to drink.

Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2012 Product #29730 (In Stock)
Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2012 Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2012

"The Vosne-Romanée is often one of the better village wines in the range, as it is once again in 2012. Wonderfully layered and voluptuous in the glass, the Vosne impresses for its volume, breadth and sheer silkiness. Sweet spices, star anise and red stone fruits flow through to the generous, resonant finish. Readers who want to experience the personality of Vosne through the lens of the 2012 vintage without spending a fortune might want to start here."  Antonio Galloni 90-92 points

"Sweet Spot Outstanding. A very spicy nose is comprised of mostly black pinot fruit that is also cut with plenty of earth, plum and floral notes. Once again there is a completely different texture to the velvety, pure and relatively refined medium weight flavors that possess good mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a slightly austere and beautifully persistent finish. This is also recommended as it's a fine Vosne villages that should repay 7 to 9 years of cellar time."Allen Meadows 89 points

Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2011 Product #28141 (In Stock)
Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2011 Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2011

From 10 different small parcels across the village, this is very Vosne with lovely ripeness and class.

"The 2011 Vosne-Romanée is another delicious entry-level Burgundy from Régis Forey. A wine of pure texture, the 2011 graces the palate with expressive dark red fruit, sweet spices and new leather. The Vosne is perhaps a touch less vibrant than Morey in 2011, but it nevertheless possesses terrific balance. The Vosne should be even better in another year. Drink 2012-2027." Antonio Galloni 90 points

"A mix of both wood and natural spice adds breadth to the somber dark berry fruit nose. There is a velvety and highly seductive texture to the solidly complex and mouth coating flavors that are underpinned by moderately firm but ripe tannins and fine length. This is not a refined example of the appellation but it does offer plenty of character."Allen Meadows 88 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets 2013

Hoo boy!  As Burghound notes, this will need another 6 or 7 years to “arrive at its full potential,” but it’s nearly impossible to resist right now.  A big "wow" wine that delivers a silky, plush, nose of spice, rich fruit, fresh earth and cocoa.  Then a mouthful of dark fruit, unctuous cocoa butter, spice and cigar tobacco with superb length, plenty of power, but absolutely no excess weight.  This is arguably the wine that most clearly exemplifies Jean Michel’s style and talent and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

"Outstanding. This is one of the ripest wines in the range as the mocha-scented nose displays notes of cassis and black raspberry liqueur notes along with spice, earth and floral wisps. There is good minerality and plenty of earth and sauvage characters on the intense and punch medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a clean and dry (in the best sense) finale that is notably austere at present. I like the depth and balance though note that this muscular effort will definitely require extended cellaring to arrive at its full potential."Allen Meadows 90-93 points

Pretty much every wine is better in magnum than regular bottle, and that’s especially true for Burgundy.  This is the 3rd year in a row that Jean-Michel has agreed to bottle some of his Marsannay in magnum just for us – as far as we know, these are the only magnums of this wine in the world!  While it will certainly develop beautifully in this larger format, it’s also utterly compelling right now.  Just 12 magnums made.

"Moderate wood influence frames the fresh and ripe aromas of cassis, plum, earth and a hint of animale. “The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots comes across as a bit understated in this vintage. The customary textural finesse is present, but there is a bit less density in the fruit. Dark red stone fruits, spices, menthol and wild flowers are layered into the impeccable, generous finish.  Drink 2016-2031.”  Antonio Galloni 93 points
