Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2012 Product #28920 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2012 Guillon Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2012

The 2011 was great, but the 2012 is better – a lot better.  Fruit for this wine comes from vineyards in and around the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Yields are always low here, but about 35% less than usual in 2012 – giving Jean-Michel and his son, Alexis, perfectly ripe fruit with loads of flavor complexity and acidity at modest (12.5%) alcohols.  A cool fermentation and 10 or so months in (35% new) French oak was just right to extract flavor and texture while rounding off any sharp edges.

As in 2011, this generous Bourgogne Chardonnay delivers luxurious aromas of golden fruit, toasted hazelnut, lemon tart, fresh butter and just a hint of crushed mint. The flavors are just one notch richer than last year, with ripe pear, apple and peach fruit and notes of warm nuts, fresh butter, and salty caramel coating your palate.  The fresh, lemony, acidity and chalky/saline minerality are similar to 2011 as well.  But the texture is just fantastic this year, with a pure intensity and silky richness that’s hard to believe – and almost never found in a “just” Bourgogne.    The finishing flavors of wet stones, lemon custard, warm hazelnut, nutmeg and tangy butter sail on and on and on.

Dom Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Product #28800 (In Stock)
Dom Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge 2011 Dom Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge 2011

As importer Neal Rosenthal says, "This wine consistently reflects, in simple form, the classic characteristics of the wines from the area around Nuits Saint Georges: red and black fruits, bright but not too dense color, exquisite balance with lively acidity, somewhat austere at the outset but elegant and savory.”

“The 2011 Bourgogne is a relatively forward, supple wine for Chézeaux. Dark red and black stone fruits, tobacco, menthol and smoke meld together in an expressive, perfumed Bourgogne with considerable early appeal. There is a lot to like here.”   Antonio Galloni 88 points

Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Product #28309 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2012

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $40-$50 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're mature, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

In Jean Michel's outstanding 2012, the lovely aromas of crushed griotte (cherry), red raspberry and wild strawberry get richer and more complex as the wine unfurls with air, a touch of fresh leather emerges, and the nutty, toasty, oak fades into the background.  The palate is much more rich, plush, and luscious than the 12.5% alcohol suggest, with lovely ripeness to the juicy red currant, raspberry and tangy cherry fruit.  Chambolle-Muisgny terroir and 50% new oak work together to provide accents of iron ore, coffee, and fresh earth.  This has excellent length on the palate and finish for Bourgogne.  Give it an hour in decanter now or two-10 years in cellar for maximum pleasure.  A fantastic Bourgogne of true Village character.

"There is enough wood to notice surrounding the pretty and fresh red berry fruit aromas. I like the concentration of the vibrant and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess good depth and fine length on the balanced finish. A good example of the genre." Allen Meadows 86-88 points

Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Grands Chaillots 2011 Product #28184 (In Stock)
Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Grands Chaillots 2011 Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Grands Chaillots 2011

Try this powerful, impressive, Bourgogne rouge from vineyards immediately in front of the soon-to-be Grand Cru of St. Georges in Nuits.  Organically farmed and made with the same care and attention Thibault lavishes on his 1er and Grand Crus, it needs air or a few years to really show.  Then it's dark and rich with dusky fruit, velvety tannins, and focused minerality and acids.  Rare to find this kind of richness, energy, and length all together in Bourgogne.  But, Thibault is emerging as one of the two or three truly great winemakers in Nuits St. George (as well as Moulin-a-Vent!) and that talent shines through here.

"There is lovely energy and detail to the very supple and saline-infused flavors that possess a touch of rusticity on the agreeably dry and clean finish."Allen Meadows 85-87 points

Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2012 Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2012

The 2011 - Jean-Michel's first vintage from this site just south of Nuits Saint Georges - was one of our most popular Burgundies of 2013.  The 2012 is better still, with even more ripe fruit and an extra dash of class from 100% new oak aging.  Oodles of raspberry, coffee, and red currant aromas and flavors and a silky, sophisticated, texture. Delicious now, better in 2017 and growing through 2020 or so.  An outstanding value.

"Here the wood is gentler if not invisible with a distinctly sauvage character to the earthy dark berry fruit aromas. There is good richness and volume to the attractively well-detailed medium weight flavors that also possess fine depth and length on the moderately rustic finish."Allen Meadows 87-89 points

Dom Forey Morey Saint Denis 2011 Product #28140 (In Stock)
Dom Forey Morey Saint Denis 2011 Dom Forey Morey Saint Denis 2011

While it might be better in a couple of years, the ripe fruit and supple, succulent, mid-palate make this tempting today.  From plots in Clos Salon and Les Crais with no new oak.

"The 2011 Morey-Saint-Denis is supple and juicy in this vintage, with expressive, supple fruit that pretty much covers the tannins. Dark red stone fruits, menthol, spices and new leather are some of the many notes that blossom on the creamy, generous finish. The Morey is a jewel of a wine in its class. It should drink well for at least a handful of years. Drink 2014-2021." Antonio Galloni 90 points

"Good bright red. Slightly jammy aromas of plum and currant. In a supple, lush style, with attractive sweetness to its red berry flavors accented by pepper and herbs. Finishes with sweet but present tannins."International Wine Cellar 88 points

Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2012 Product #28842 (In Stock)
Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2012 Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2012

A perfect Christmas Pinot Noir. Jean Michel Guillon purchased this small vineyard about 8 years ago and his hard work has transformed its 30-40 year-old vines into something very special indeed.  He harvests less than 30 hectoliters per hectare of perfectly ripe fruit here – much lower yields than are allowed in Grand Cru vineyards!  And, he treats it like “Grand Cru” wine, too, aging it for 16 months in all new Bertomieu French oak barrels.

The aromas are luscious with generous scents of red currant, cranberry, coffee and spice jumping from the glass.  Beautiful sweet cherry, currant, and red berry fruit take center stage on the palate, with accents of smoke, coffee, and fresh flowers.  The fruit is so sweet and texture of the wine so silky smooth that you might miss the iron ore minerality and fine tannins that bode so well for future improvement.  A beautiful wine to drink right now and sure to be better and better over the next decade.

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2008

Burghound “Outstanding Top Value”

A great vintage for this excellent Village level red made from Jean-Michel’s oldest vines – all 50 years old or older.  As always, this delivers plenty of power and structure, but there is an extra level of ripeness and grace here as well.  This will drink nicely with decanting now and really hit its stride in another 5 years.

“From 50+ year-old vines raised in 100% new wood. This is extremely primary, in fact so much so that residual fermentation aromas are still evident though the red berry fruit appears clean and pure and is followed by impressively rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract that confers a beguiling texture to the mouth feel and renders the firm tannins almost invisible on the impeccably balanced finish. Recommended as villages level wines typically do not have this kind of completeness. Outstanding Top Value.”Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Product #26485 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2010

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really grabbed us in 2010.  Screams “Gevrey” with its earthy red fruit and note of dusty iron ore but still soft and open enough to give early pleasure.  Excellent value.

"In contrast to the relatively expressive noses of the prior three wines, this is much more serious with brooding aromas of earth, wild red berries and a whiff of humus. There is excellent energy to the detailed and lightly mineral-suffused flavors that possess good ripeness to the structural elements where the finish again displays a wonderful sense of tension and energy."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

Dom Forey Morey St. Denis 2010 Dom Forey Morey St. Denis 2010

While this will certainly improve for 5+ years, it's a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir to enjoy right now.  The aromas show off dark fruit, coffee, and spice with just a touch of earth.  Pure and vibrant in the mouth, there's a nice richness to the red and black cherry fruit and plenty of smoky spice and floral accents.  Fine tannins and good body make this a great wine for roast chicken or seared duck. Lovely and long.

"A delicate hint of wood does not diminish the attractiveness of the ripe and solidly complex earthy red berry fruit aromas that have a top note of rose petal. The delicious and very pinot flavors possess good precision and freshness on the vibrant and pure finish. This is an elegant villages and I like the sophistication of the tannins here though there is only average complexity."Allen Meadows 87 points

"Bright medium red. Plum, rust and brown spices on the nose. Round, supple and vinous, with ripe redcurrant fruit showing good sweetness and plenty of early appeal. Finishes with a hint of oaky bitterness but the tannins are nicely enrobed by fruit."International Wine Cellar 88 points

"The 2010 Morey St. Denis has plenty of energy and vibrancy. Brilliant, nicely delineated tannins frame dark fruit, freshly cut flowers and subtle hints of spices. This is a very pretty villages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016."Wine Advocate 88 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011 Product #27667 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2011

A special cuvee made by and for Jean-Michel's son (and assistant winemaker now) Alexis.  All of the village wines used here are at least 60 years old, and their maturity allowed them to thrive in the difficult 2011 vintage.  Coffee, woodsy mushroom, and cocoa powder notes provide nice accents to the powerful, but pure, dark black fruit.  The middle is dark, deep, and powerful and the masses of ripe tannins do not interfere with a long, layered, finish.  Nice clarity for all of the power here.

"An expressive nose combines oak toast, ripe plum and plenty of pungent Gevrey earth. There is good punch and detail plus better acid balance to the lightly mineral-infused middle weight flavors that deliver good depth and length."Allen Meadows 88-90 points

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012

Co-winemaker Alexis Guillon's cuvee is always a bit more elegant than the Domaine's other Village wines, but still has the concentration and depth that only comes from 60+ year-old vines. This is the best vintage for this wine I can recall and the Burghound score is too low.  An outstanding value for now - 2022.

"While the wood is not invisible there is better aromatic complexity present on the dark currant, earth, sauvage and plum suffused nose. There is fine detail to the mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess excellent phenolic maturity to the supporting tannic spine, all wrapped in a robust, powerful and impressively long finish. I like the concentration and if this can add a bit more length it should merit the top of my projected range."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

From 50-90 year-old vines, this is always the most powerful and complex of Jean-Michel's Village level wines.  The essence of Gevrey-Chambertin here and the structure and balance to develop beautifully in cellar.

"Outstanding Top Value. Here the wood treatment is much more discreet with its cool and pure nose of wild and mixed dark berries, pungent earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is excellent intensity and drive to the overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess excellent volume and phenolic maturity before concluding in a saline, long and ever-so-mildly austere finish. This is well worth considering."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012

The most open and immediately generous of Confuron's 2012s, although even better from 2015-2025 or so.

“Good red-ruby. Distinctly reduced, gamey aromas of dark berries, licorice and coffee. Similarly reduced in the mouth, but showing good intensity and an attractive sugar/acid balance to the flavors of black fruits, leather, violet and licorice. With its firm tannins and impression of solidity, this is very Nuits-Saint-Georges.”International Wine Cellar 88-90 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres, from the lieu-dit just south of the village (1.23-hectares of vines between 22 and 46 years old), has a well-defined, floral, elegant bouquet that demonstrates good vivacity, a patina of vanilla oak present but knitted with the fruit. The palate is well balanced with tensile tannins, very fine focus and a clean pure finish with crisp blackcurrant and wild strawberry notes that disguise the latent mineralite. This is an excellent Nuits Saint Georges.”Wine Advocate 90-92 points

“The Les Fleurieres offers rich aromas of dark raspberry and plum with forest floor notes. It has a ripe and flavorful palate and is nicely balanced with excellent acidity and firm tannins on the finish. This wine will be even more enjoyable in two years and will provide drinking pleasure over the next 7-10 years.” i-Wine Review 90+ points

Dom JJ Confuron Chambolle Musigny 2012 Product #29037 (In Stock)
Dom JJ Confuron Chambolle Musigny 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Chambolle Musigny 2012

A beautiful, elegant, Chambolle with silky texture and generous aromatics.  A short decant brings out the aromatics and fruit now and 5-7 years of cellar time will only deliver more.

“Here too there is enough reduction present to block a proper assessment of the nose. There is impressive density to the very suave and opulent flavors that exude a fine minerality on the velvety finish that really coats the palate. This is not super fine but there is a certain laciness to the finish that makes this quite appealing.”Allen Meadows 88-91 points

“The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from three parcels that are vinified together, from lieux-dits “Derriere la Four”, “Les Pas de Chats” and “Les Condemennes” (1.15-hectares). The bouquet is ripe and quite showy at this stage, with bright blackcurrant and cassis fruit neatly layered with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, chocolate-tinged entry, a fine bead of acidity and a nicely counterpoised, slightly austere finish. The oak will need a couple of years after bottling to fully integrate but it should be worth the wait.” Wine Advocate 87-89 points

“The medium dark ruby Chambolle-Musigny Village displays dark red plum aromas with a forest floor note. It is lush on the attack and the palate revealing perfumed cherry fruit notes typical of Chambolle. It has a soft texture, firm structure. round tannins and a very long finish. Enjoy this beauty over the next 7 to 10 years.” i-Wine Review 92 points

A stellar Vosne Romanee with velvet texture and fine length.

"Brilliant dark red. Reticent, slightly medicinal aromas of raspberry and pepper. Brisk and juicy in the mouth, with excellent cut to its flavors of red berries, pepper, spices and minerals. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and lingering notes of griotte cherry, pepper and spices. Long and backward for village wine, and very promising."International Wine Cellar 90 points

"The 2010 Vosne-Romanee is the most interesting and complete of the four village-level wines in Forey’s portfolio. It possesses lovely textural finesse and delineation in its attractive notes of plum, black cherries and spices. I tasted the Vosne from both a new and one-year-old barrel and came away with the impression that even the wine in the new barrel had more than enough density to stand up to the oak. The Vosne is made from an assortment of parcels on the northern side of the village. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2020."Wine Advocate 88+ points

While 2007 was a challenging vintage for reds, Jean Michel Guillon rose to that challenge and turned out a bevy of beautiful wines.  His 2007 1er Cru Champonnets was impressive young but now - after 5 years in a cool cellar - is unfolding into something quite beautiful.  Lovely aromas of red flowers, spice, tangy cherry, and smoke open the show.  Then it's silky and pure in the mouth with long and very fine flavors of red berries, flowers, iron, and hints of coffee, spice, and earth.  The tannins provide gentle support and the finish goes on and on.  Delicate, but very Gevrey and ready to drink.
