Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2014 Product #30573 (In Stock)
Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2014 Guillon Bourgogne Rouge Les Graviers 2014

Les Graviers is one of the best Pinot Noir vineyards lying just outside the bounds of village Chambolle Musigny.  Both Frederic Magnien and Domaine Ponsot base their Bourgogne rouge on Graviers, with Ponsot’s usually selling for $40-$50 (if you can find it).  Jean Michel used the young vines from this vineyard for cremant, but now that they're mature, all the fruit from Les Graviers goes into make one brilliant Bourgogne Rouge – a wine that’s very much a “baby Chambolle Musigny!”

In Jean Michel's outstanding 2014, the lovely aromas of crushed griotte (cherry), red raspberry and wild strawberry get richer and more complex as the wine unfurls with air, a touch of fresh leather emerges, and the nutty, toasty, oak fades into the background.  The palate is much more rich, plush, and luscious than the 12.5% alcohol suggest, with lovely ripeness to the juicy red currant, raspberry and tangy cherry fruit.  Chambolle-Muisgny terroir and 50% new oak work together to provide accents of iron ore, coffee, and fresh earth.  This has excellent length on the palate and finish for Bourgogne.  A fantastic Bourgogne of true Village character to drink now and over the next 5-8 years.

Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes De Nuits Prieure 2012 Product #29162 (In Stock)
Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes De Nuits Prieure 2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes De Nuits Prieure 2012

Delicious after an hour's decant and built to give pleasure for 10 years or more.  Lovely value.

"The 2012 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Le Clos du Prieure´ is a gorgeous wine at this level. Juicy and expressive, the 2012 jumps from the glass with layers of dark fruit, all supported by serious tannins and overall structure. Iron, dark red fruit and an array of ferrous notes add dimensions of complexity. Today it is rich and imposing to the core."  Antonio Galloni 90-92 points

"The 2012 Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Le Clos du Prieure comes from a 1.10-hectare vineyard close to the village of Arcenant, on rich limestone and marl soils. The nose is open with vibrant, floral black currant and cassis aromas. The palate is energetic with superb acidity and immense purity, the terroir coming through on the mineral rich finish. Outstanding – this comes highly recommended."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013 Product #30032 (In Stock)
Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013 Guillon Marsannay Clos Des Portes 2013

A stunning bottle of handcrafted red Burgundy that will delight fans of ripe Russian River or warm vintage Willamette Valley Pinot today and satisfy the most demanding Burgundy fan for years to come.  Jean Michel Guillon purchased this small vineyard about 9 years ago and his hard work has transformed its 30-40 year-old vines into something very special indeed.  He harvests less than 30 hectoliters per hectare of perfectly ripe fruit here – much lower yields than are allowed in Grand Cru vineyards!  And, he treats it like “Grand Cru” wine, too, aging it for 16 months in all new Bertomieu French oak barrels.

Right now it serves up luscious aromas of red currant, cranberry, coffee and.  Beautiful sweet cherry, currant, and red berry fruit take center stage on the palate, with accents of smoke, coffee, and fresh flowers.  The fruit is so sweet and texture of the wine so silky smooth that you might miss the minerality and fine tannins that bode so well for future improvement.  A pretty cranberry note wells up on the velvety finish – and what could be better with Thanksgiving dinner than a touch of cranberry!  A beautiful wine to drink right now and sure to be better and better over the next decade.

"Moderate wood influence frames the fresh and ripe aromas of cassis, plum, earth and a hint of animale. The earth character continues onto the textured medium-bodied flavors that also display a touch of minerality on the solidly complex and persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This mildly oaky effort should also drink well young if desired."Allen Meadows 88-90 points

Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2014 Product #31356 (In Stock)
Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2014 Guillon Cotes De Nuits Villages Queues De Hareng 2014

Just Jean-Michel’s fourth vintage from this fine vineyard located a touch south of Nuits Saint Georges, and easily the very best yet.  Oodles of raspberry, coffee, and red currant aromas and flavors and a silky, sophisticated, texture.  It’s rare to see a wine from a more “humble” site like this have the stuffing to benefit from 100% new oak, but the 2014 handles it with ease.  Delicious now and able to develop through 2024+.  Outstanding value here.

Outstanding Top Value "A discreet touch of wood sets off the ripe, fresh and complex nose that consists of plum, earth, violet and plenty of earth character. There is terrific intensity to the detailed, sleek and delineated middle weight flavors that are also endowed with relatively fine-grained tannins that shape the lingering finish that evidences a hint of bitter cherry. This is an excellent example of the appellation and worth your interest."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Fixin Hauts Crais 2014 Product #31357 (In Stock)

Jean-Michel's very first vintage in this vineyard perched near the top of the hill overlooking the village of Fixin.  A strict green harvest brought yields down to 30 hl/ha (very low in this "value" village) to give the wine the kind of concentration and body Jean-Michel is known for.  Aging in 100% new French oak provided roundness, but the oak flavors are buried in the fresh cherry/berry fruit and give just the nicest touch of spice.  Round and full of fruit and softly supple on  the juicy finish, this is an outstanding Burgundy to enjoy young and will improve for 5+ years.

"A discreet application of wood serves as a backdrop for the pretty plum, violet, earth and slightly gamy aromas. Here too there is a relatively sleek mouth feel to the vibrant and overtly stony middle weight flavors that display a mild touch of austerity on the balanced and refreshing finish."Allen Meadows 87-90 points

"Mild reduction pushes what appears to be ripe fruit to the background. Otherwise there is good verve to the racy, intense and well-delineated flavors that don't possess the same mid-palate concentration but are persistent and well-balanced. This could also be approached young if desired."Allen Meadows 87-89 points

Guillon Marsannay Blanc Les Champs Perdrix 2009 Product #31438 (In Stock)

A rich, luxurious, Chardonnay from the northern reaches of the Cote de Nuits in Marsannay.  In the warm 2009 harvest, Jean-Michel allowed the healthy Chardonnay fruit to ripen fully before hand harvesting and fermenting and aging the wine in 50% new oak.  Aromas of nut oil, lemon, chervil, smoke and stone fruit lead to a deeply textured, viscous, palate of mature Chardonnay nut, lemon curd, orchard fruit, warm stones, and savory herb.  The flavors really cling to your palate through a long, savory, finish.

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Product #29035 (In Stock)
Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012

The most open and immediately generous of Confuron's 2012s, in the drinking window from 2015-2025 or so.

“Good red-ruby. Distinctly reduced, gamey aromas of dark berries, licorice and coffee. Similarly reduced in the mouth, but showing good intensity and an attractive sugar/acid balance to the flavors of black fruits, leather, violet and licorice. With its firm tannins and impression of solidity, this is very Nuits-Saint-Georges.”International Wine Cellar 88-90 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres, from the lieu-dit just south of the village (1.23-hectares of vines between 22 and 46 years old), has a well-defined, floral, elegant bouquet that demonstrates good vivacity, a patina of vanilla oak present but knitted with the fruit. The palate is well balanced with tensile tannins, very fine focus and a clean pure finish with crisp blackcurrant and wild strawberry notes that disguise the latent mineralite. This is an excellent Nuits Saint Georges.”Wine Advocate 90-92 points

“The Les Fleurieres offers rich aromas of dark raspberry and plum with forest floor notes. It has a ripe and flavorful palate and is nicely balanced with excellent acidity and firm tannins on the finish. This wine will be even more enjoyable in two years and will provide drinking pleasure over the next 7-10 years.” i-Wine Review 90+ points

Barthod Bourgogne Rouge 2013 Barthod Bourgogne Rouge 2013

A lovely Bourgogne from a Chambolle master.

"Outstanding Top Value! A very pretty nose is comprised of various red berry scents along with notes of plum and violets. There is good verve to the racy and attractively intense middle weight flavors that display only a touch of finish rusticity. This is a very fine effort for its level and worth your attention."Allen Meadows 86-89 points

"Matured in 10% new wood, the 2013 Bourgogne Rouge has a clean and relatively generous bouquet with satisfying raspberry and crushed strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins. The acidity is well judged and there is a confit-like finish. Overall, it represents a very commendable Bourgogne Rouge and will doubtless be good value."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Dom Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin VV 2013 Product #30895 (In Stock)
Dom Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin VV 2013 Dom Henri Magnien Gevrey Chambertin VV 2013

One of the most satisfying village-level Gevrey-Chambertin we've had in a while from a tiny producer seldom seen outside of France.  Here the fruit comes from 40 year-old vines growing in 10+ small slices of vineyard around the village of Gevrey. One of those vineyards provides a tie to the Magnien's Burgundy history - the vines in Empointures used for this wine were cuttings taken from vines in 1er Cru Cazetierers planted in 1915!

This already sports a pretty perfume of griotte cherry and raspberry puree with iron shavings and fresh earth.  Plenty of muscular power on the palate, but also superb purity and elegance, with a core of ripe berry fruit, iron, earth and spice.  Lovely texture - iron fist in a silk glove - with outstanding length on the palate and fruit, mineral, and cut flower finish.  A fantastic wine, but very limited.

Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2014 Product #31360 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2014 Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2014

Co-winemaker Alexis Guillon's cuvee is always a bit more elegant than the Domaine's other Village wines, but still has the concentration and depth that only comes from 60+ year-old vines. This is the best vintage for this wine I can recall and the best rating from Burghound, too.  Another outstanding value in classic Gevrey Chambertin.  Best from 2019 - 2029.

Outstanding Top Value " A moderately wooded nose also exhibits a touch of menthol on the classic Gevrey aromas of earth, underbrush, game and cool dark berry fruit. There is excellent mid-palate density to the intense, robust and muscular flavors that coat the palate on the slightly rustic and impressively long finish. Worth considering."Allen Meadows 89-91 points

Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013 Product #30034 (In Stock)
Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Pere Galland 2013

Jean Michel makes several different Gevrey village cuvves, but this one – named for the man who helped Jean Michel learn to make wine – really shines in 2013.  It’s more plush and fruit-driven than in some vintages with a richness to the texture and finish that will delight right now with food.  Still, lacking nothing in terms of potential for cellaring.

"Outstanding Top Value! Soft but not invisible wood and menthol nuances intertwine with the very ripe essence of black currant, cassis and warm earth nuances. Consistent with the nose, the succulent and seductively textured flavors are notably ripe and blessed with an impressive amount of dry extract that push the moderately firm tannic spine to the background on the ever-so-mildly rustic finish. This is really more Vosne than Gevrey in style but it does deliver very fine quality." Allen Meadows 89-91 points

This is the best vintage for this wine I can recall and the Burghound score is too low.  An outstanding value for now - 2022.

"While the wood is not invisible there is better aromatic complexity present on the dark currant, earth, sauvage and plum suffused nose. There is fine detail to the mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess excellent phenolic maturity to the supporting tannic spine, all wrapped in a robust, powerful and impressively long finish. I like the concentration and if this can add a bit more length it should merit the top of my projected range."Allen Meadows 88-91 points

From 50-90 year-old vines, this is always the most powerful and complex of Jean-Michel's Village level wines.  The essence of Gevrey-Chambertin here and the structure and balance to develop beautifully in cellar.

"Outstanding Top Value. Here the wood treatment is much more discreet with its cool and pure nose of wild and mixed dark berries, pungent earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is excellent intensity and drive to the overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess excellent volume and phenolic maturity before concluding in a saline, long and ever-so-mildly austere finish. Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013 Guillon Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes 2013

Always one of Jean-Michel’s – and importer Olivier Daubresse’s! – favorite cuvees, I really cannot imagine how you wouldn’t guess very good 1er cru when tasting this blind.  It’s a powerful wine that can be enjoyed young for the rich, almost dense, fruit and will add complex earthy/iron ore notes as it matures.  Drink young with air and food or enjoy from 2023-2033 to see all this has to offer.  Perhaps the most outstanding value of this offering.

"Outstanding Top Value. In contrast to the Cuvée Galland this displays buckets of classic Gevrey character with its beautifully complex aromas of game, underbrush, pungent earth and that telltale sauvage quality on the assorted dark berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the middle weight plus flavors that possess equally good complexity on the extract-rich, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is an old school Gevrey villages that will require plenty of patience but if you have it then this is a terrific choice. Highly recommended for the patient." Allen Meadows 89-92 points

Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2012 Product #29730 (In Stock)
Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2012 Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2012

"The Vosne-Romanée is often one of the better village wines in the range, as it is once again in 2012. Wonderfully layered and voluptuous in the glass, the Vosne impresses for its volume, breadth and sheer silkiness. Sweet spices, star anise and red stone fruits flow through to the generous, resonant finish. Readers who want to experience the personality of Vosne through the lens of the 2012 vintage without spending a fortune might want to start here."  Antonio Galloni 90-92 points

"Sweet Spot Outstanding. A very spicy nose is comprised of mostly black pinot fruit that is also cut with plenty of earth, plum and floral notes. Once again there is a completely different texture to the velvety, pure and relatively refined medium weight flavors that possess good mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a slightly austere and beautifully persistent finish. This is also recommended as it's a fine Vosne villages that should repay 7 to 9 years of cellar time."Allen Meadows 89 points

Always one of Jean-Michel’s – and importer Olivier Daubresse’s! – favorite cuvees, I really cannot imagine how you wouldn’t guess very good 1er cru when tasting this blind.  It’s a powerful wine that can be aprecied now for the dense fruit and palate-coating richness but will need time to mellow and open to show earthy, iron ore, minerality.  Hold it until 2024 and enjoy through 2034 and longer.

Outstanding Top Value "I would describe this as moderately wooded as well with its notes of menthol and dense fruited nose of plum, dark berries, spice and abundant earth scents. There is outstanding richness and concentration to the notably powerful and serious middle weight plus flavors that deliver excellent persistence on the rustic finale. This old school effort won't win any awards for refinement but it is a first-rate Gevrey villages that really saturates the palate with dry extract. Highly recommended provided that you have the patience to give it at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring."Allen Meadows 89-92 points

Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2011 Dom Forey Vosne Romanee 2011

From 10 different small parcels across the village, this is very Vosne with lovely ripeness and class.

"The 2011 Vosne-Romanée is another delicious entry-level Burgundy from Régis Forey. A wine of pure texture, the 2011 graces the palate with expressive dark red fruit, sweet spices and new leather. The Vosne is perhaps a touch less vibrant than Morey in 2011, but it nevertheless possesses terrific balance. The Vosne should be even better in another year. Drink 2012-2027." Antonio Galloni 90 points

"A mix of both wood and natural spice adds breadth to the somber dark berry fruit nose. There is a velvety and highly seductive texture to the solidly complex and mouth coating flavors that are underpinned by moderately firm but ripe tannins and fine length. This is not a refined example of the appellation but it does offer plenty of character."Allen Meadows 88 points
