Papet Del Mas Cava Brut NV Product #27801 (In Stock)
Papet Del Mas Cava Brut NV Papet Del Mas Cava Brut NV

A very fine sparkling wine value, this Spanish Cava had its secondary fermentation in bottle and clearly benefits from the Champagne method treatment!  Creamy textured and full of pretty bubbles, it's soft and easy with peach and lemon fruit and a touch of yeasty/bread dough quality.  A bit of lemon rind at the end adds refreshment to this great party or back porch bottle of bubbly!

Clua Mas D'en Pol Blanca 2012 Product #27300 (In Stock)
Clua Mas D'en Pol Blanca 2012 Clua Mas D'en Pol Blanca 2012

Maybe it’s the great 2012 vintage (a winner in pretty much all of Europe), or perhaps it’s a little more rigorous vineyard work or a touch more sophistication in the blend.  Or, it could just be that Xavier left Muscat out of the blend this year.  Whatever the cause, this is far and away my favorite release of this sophisticated but crowd-pleasing white ever.

Xavier makes this from Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay and a dash of Sauvignon Blanc grown in the rocky, hard-to-work, vineyards of Terra Alta.  Fermented cool in tank and bottled without ever touching a barrel, it delivers just the right balance of luscious nectarine and tangy pineapple fruit with hints of lemon grass and lime pith.  Round, generous, and mouthfilling, the real excitement here is on the back palate and finish where a burst of selzer, chalk, and briny mineral emerges under the mouthwatering acidity.  A refreshing white you’ll love sipping on the back deck with nibbles and enjoy even more with shellfish, sausage, or paella.  Just a winner all around.

Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2009 Product #27287 (In Stock)
Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2009 Clua El Sola D'en Pol Barrica Tinto 2009

Xavier Clua is among the most celebrated wine makers in the up-and-coming Terra Alta region, just southwest of Priorat. Born into a family with over four generations in wine making, Xavier is producing outstanding wines from carefully tended old-vine vineyards and a judicious blending of modern technology (temperature control, stainless) and wine making tradition (old basket presses and minimal intervention).  The Mas d'en Pol Negre Barrica is a blend of Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot that receives about eight months aging in French oak barrels.  Aromas of black raspberry and balsamic with just a touch of slate lead to a rich, black-fruited, palate  with a nice red raspberry tang.  Sweet/sour berry fruit turns tangier on the juicy finish.  Great energy and freshness here to go with the rich aromas and flavors.

Sios Costers Del Segre Cau Del Gat 2011 Product #27676 (In Stock)
Sios Costers Del Segre Cau Del Gat 2011 Sios Costers Del Segre Cau Del Gat 2011

Another powerful, but refined, dark red wine from Catalonia, this time from the eastern region of Costers del Segre.  It's the winery's top wine of this range, a concentrated blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Garnacha aged 9 months in all new French Oak.  If you dig into the wine, you'll notice Syrah's characteristic notes of meaty, smoky, blueberry richness.  But, the overall impact is more "Spain" than "Syrah" with plenty of rich red fruit and earthy spice.  Powerful, but not heavy, and a great match with grilled or roasted meat.

Perucchi Vermouth Gran Reserva Red (1 Liter) Product #26213 (In Stock)
Perucchi Vermouth Gran Reserva Red (1 Liter) Perucchi Vermouth Gran Reserva Red (1 Liter)

Vermouth Perucchi has been made in Catalonia since 1886 – but only recently imported into the United States. We think it is a delicious, new (to us) treat at a very fair price!

Perruchi shows bold spice aromas of fresh gingerbread, autumn woods and tobacco followed by delectably sweet flavors of black cherry compote macerated in ruby port, finishing with a pleasant, balancing bitter herb note. Though this would certainly be fantastic in a classic Manhattan, the flavors are so wonderful it begs to be savored. Try it on the rocks with a splash of seltzer and a wedge of orange as an aperitif or at the end of dinner, neat, with a wedge of blue cheese garnished with Membrillo or fig jam and Marcona almonds.

Joseph Puig Montsant Tinto 2011 Product #26584 (In Stock)
Joseph Puig Montsant Tinto 2011 Joseph Puig Montsant Tinto 2011

Spanish wine industry veteran Joseph Puig has a new project, uncovering great wines made by friends throughout Spain and then offering them to us at very attractive prices.  This is a fine example, a perfectly textbook Monsant.  Ripe but minerally, focused and fresh, this opens with red berry fruit and slate before darker, riper, raspberry flavors come up from underneath.  Mouthwatering on the zesty finish, this a terrific blend of great ripeness with refreshing acids and minerality.  Hedonistic in a good way.

Buil & Giné Montsant 17XI 2009 Product #27008 (In Stock)
Buil & Giné Montsant 17XI 2009 Buil & Giné Montsant 17XI 2009

Lovely blueberry and ripe blackberry fruit with just a touch of spice here in a wine that's easy enough to drink solo but that will work well with robust roasted and grilled foods.

"Made from a blend of garnacha, carinena and tempranillo that was aged for six months in French and American oak. Opaque ruby. Smoke-accented aromas of dark berries and dried flowers, with a spicy nuance building in the glass. Youthfully taut on entry, then fleshier in the middle, offering ripe dark fruit flavors and a hint of cracked pepper. Picks up brighter red fruits on the long, tangy finish."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Mas Estela Just Dolc Negre (500ml) Product #25259 (In Stock)
Mas Estela Just Dolc Negre (500ml) Mas Estela Just Dolc Negre (500ml)

Here’s a wildly delicious sweet red from one of our favorite artisanal producers in Catalonia.  This is 100% old vine Black Garnacha, organically grown and harvested late for super ripeness.  After fermentation (which leaves plenty of sugar), the wine seeps on its skins for 60+ days and then ages for a year in glass demi-johns – outside in the sun, wind, and cold.  The result is a lush mouthful of crushed black raspberry fruit with plenty of coffee and cocoa accents and a finish that goes on forever.

Clua Milliennium Tinto 2008 Product #27332 (In Stock)
Clua Milliennium Tinto 2008 Clua Milliennium Tinto 2008

Once again, a simply absurd amount of complexity and class for a wine from Terra Alta - but that's normal for Xavier Clua!  This is his top wine, made only in the best vintages from Garantxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir - and, even though it's only 5% of the wine, the Pinot Noir shows through in this release.  Big, ripe, aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, lavender, fresh meat, and warm stones run through the wine.  Despite the size, it's elegantly structured, almost Pinot-like, with a silky texture and juicy, fresh, acidity.  Has the length and balance to improve for 5+ years, but  already delicious, especially with grilled duck or pork.

Josep Serra Monsant Octonia Negre 2009 Product #28095 (In Stock)
Josep Serra Monsant Octonia Negre 2009 Josep Serra Monsant Octonia Negre 2009

For the first release of his own wine, Octonia, well-known Priorat and Monsant consulting winemaker Josep Serra spare no effort or expense.  The fruit is from 70 year-old vines growing in Monsant, just outside Priorat.  A blend of 50% Garnacha Fina, 35% Garnacha Peluda (“Hairy Grenache”), and 15% Mazuelo ferments and ages in 400 liter French oak barrels sourced from the same coopers used by Haut Brion in Bordeaux.  After 16 months aging, the wine is bottled without fining and filtration.

The result is a blockbuster, the most exciting wine from Monsant I can ever recall tasting.  Big, generous, aromas of black fruit, roasted meat, pan juices and smoke open the show.  The savory, meaty, notes run through the deep, powerful, palate of black plum, blackberry, and black raspberry fruit.  A broad streak of hot stone minerality comes up to support the fruit and big flavors of blackberry, blood orange, roasted meat, and iron explode on the long, intense, finish.  With air, the roasted meat notes clarify and the wine gains even more purity of luscious fruit and warming spice and stone.  Decant and drink now or cellar for 10 years.  A simply brilliant wine, but very limited.

En Numeros Vermells Priorat Samso 2011 Product #27413 (In Stock)

"Samso" or Carenena are Catalan names for the grape the French call Carignan, the backbone of all great Priorat.  This 100% Samso is bold, black, and powerful with intense blackberry and blueberry fruit, hints of balsamic, and loads of classic Priorat minerality.  Big on the palate and big tannins at the end make this a great candidate to cellar for a while or enjoy now with robust foods.
