Duval Leroy Champagne Brut NV Product #16319 (In Stock)
Duval Leroy Champagne Brut NV Duval Leroy Champagne Brut NV

Since its formation in 1848, Duval-Leroy has grown to top-tier levels in Champagne, but remains family-owned and managed.  The house style emphasizes elegance and grace over power and pure force, with Chardonnay usually accounting for 80-90% of this wine’s blend.  For the past 10 years or so, Duval-Leroy has moved from strength-to-strength, with two appearances in the Wine Spectator Top 100 in the past 5 years.

The newest release of Duval-Leroy’s main wine – the Brut Champagne – is easily the best of the past 3-4 years. There’s plenty of concentration and depth to the wine, but the main theme here is elegance.  Mouthfilling, but bright, accessible but complex, immediately appealing but worthy of attention, at this price it’s hard to imagine a better value in “real” Champagne for New Year’s!

“An elegant wine, with a delicate grain and subtle, citrusy acidity. Offers flavors of yellow apple, clementine and licorice snap, with hints of marzipan and coconut and a fresh, creamy finish. Drink now through 2018.”Wine Spectator 92 points

Pierre Gimonnet Brut 1er Cru Blanc De Blancs NV Product #27255 (In Stock)
Pierre Gimonnet Brut 1er Cru Blanc De Blancs NV Pierre Gimonnet Brut 1er Cru Blanc De Blancs NV

All Didier Gimonet makes is 100% Chardonnay Champagne, all aged in steel with no malolactic fermentation.  This wine from 1er Cru fruit is cool, bracing, and very pure.

"Quince and lemon pith on the nose, with deeper notes of honey and anise emerging with aeration. Fleshy but dry, with impressive depth to its spicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors. A bitter herb nuance carries through a long, clinging finish, which echoes the honey note."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"Gimonnet’s NV Brut Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Cuvee Cuis fills out nicely on the mid-palate, with a little more mid-palate pliancy and richness than the Belles Annees. Green pears, flowers and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that flow through to a wiry finish endowed with significant energy and polish. This is a striking effort from Gimonnet."Wine Advocate 90 points

"Fresh, offering a lively bead, with flavors of white peach, apple, biscuit and blanched almond that show a hint of passion fruit. Shows fine texture and an open-knit, mineral-tinged finish."Wine Spectator 91 points

Billecart-salmon Brut Reserve N/V Billecart-salmon Brut Reserve N/V

A classic bottle of Champagne, elegant and bright with lovely bubbles and plenty of yeasty toast and biscuit note over the cut apple, citrus, and white peach fruit.  A blend of Pinot Meunier (about half), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with three years on the lees, this is richly textured and ripe but finishes clean, toasty, and mouthwatering. Very fine value from one of Champagne's most important estates.

"Light red with a frothy mousse. Cranberry, redcurrant and wild strawberry on the nose, with cherry skin and dark chocolate adding complexity. This smells like a Kir Royale mixed by Dali, or maybe Magritte. The expression of red fruits is remarkable for its depth and purity. Creamy red berry and cherry preserve flavors are firmed by gentle acidity and pick up an exotic floral quality on the back end. Finishes with excellent clarity and great persistence. I'd serve this as I would a light, exuberant red Burgundy."International Wine Cellar 93 points

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Rose NV Product #17167 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Rose NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Rose NV

This release of Eric's Rose is the most compelling yet, from the bright salmon pink color to the luscious mouthful of strawberry and cherry fruit accented with juicy blood orange and smoky toast notes. Eric makes a base wine of about two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay (including up to 40% reserve wines) colored by about 8% red Pinot Noir juice from his Ambonnay vineyards.

The wine bursts with aromas of wild strawberries and toast aromas and fills your mouth with ripe strawberry and tangy cherry fruit surrounded by juicy acids and a touch of biscuit. The creamy texture and round mouthfeel make this all too easy to gulp – but slow down and enjoy the ride, especially with foods like smoked salmon or duck.

Gatinois Brut Rose Grand Cru Nv Product #27696 (In Stock)
Gatinois Brut Rose Grand Cru Nv Gatinois Brut Rose Grand Cru Nv

Pierre Cheval-Gatinois sells his "lesser" fruit and base wines to Bollinger for their Grande Annee - but the best he makes into sublime Champagne himself!  This refined pink Champagne is complex and luscious with tangy red fruit and a dash of spice.  Pretty in the glass, but even more lovely to drink.

"Initially quite powerful and vinous, the NV Brut Rose Grand Cru turns more delicate and feminine with time in the glass. The broad shoulders, minerality and power of Ay are vivid and beautifully expressive in the glass. Pure layers of intense minerality become utterly vivid on the delineated, polished finish."Wine Advocate 92 points

"A vinous rosé for food, with a firm structure, lively bead and iodine and smoky mineral notes accenting flavors of kirsch, dried cranberry, strawberry preserves, spice and grilled plum." Wine Spectator 92 points

The 1er Cru vineyard of Vertus is famous for Pinot Noir in addition to the Chardonnay you'd expect here along the Cote de Blancs.  Buy Larmandier blends 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir here from two vintages (2009-2008 here) and ages the wine for 36 months before disgorgement.  The result is a sleek beauty of a wine that opens with rich aromas of toast, nuts, mineral and lemon.  In the mouth, plenty of Chardonnay cut and drive elevated with hints of earthy red fruit and richness from the Pinot Noir.  Clean, toasty, precise, and extremely long with a finish that won't quit.

Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru NV Product #25835 (In Stock)
Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru NV Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru NV

We're self-admitted freaks for bubbles around here, but when it comes to true Champagne, we're a little picky.  It's not cheap, and we won't bring something new in unless it really wows us.  This wowed us.
Guy Larmandier is a family-owned domaine, with vineyards in the Cote des Blancs, one of the most prestigious regions of Champagne.  This Grand Cru bottling is made from 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Cramant. It's the kind of handmade grower Champagne we are thrilled to be able to sell - and drink!

At first sniff, this smells like the skin of a really good, juicy pear.  As the bubbles dissipate a bit, aromas of white flowers and brioche emerge. There's a hint of roasted hazelnuts as well. Despite its minimum 36 months of aging, it's crisp and refreshing on the palate, with flavors of pear, a touch of lemon curd, and a beautiful chalky minerality. The flavors are sophisticated, but never austere. This would, of course, be a no-brainer for anniversaries and New Years' Eve, but sometimes a top-quality Champagne's sparkle and delicate layers are best appreciated on a humdrum Tuesday with no distractions.  Pop this open on movie night with a much smaller guest list and feel like you just spent a million bucks.

Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Blancs "Act I" 2007 Product #26006 (In Stock)
Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Blancs Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Blancs

Pierre Paillard's Blanc de Blanc "Act 1" 2007, so named to stay within a legal loophole in France's vintage designation system, opens with a sophisticated whiff of white flowers and fresh almonds.  Aromas of fresh pear, golden apple, and brioche come in as well.  On the palate it's lemony and zippy, with a beautiful minerality and yeastiness on the finish.  Delivers all of that class and sophistication at far less than what you would normally pay for a single-vintage, 100% Chardonnay Champagne from all Grand Cru fruit.

"Disgorged January 25, 2012. Pale yellow-gold. Orchard and pit fruits on the toasty, gently spicy nose and in the mouth. Musky pear and peach pit flavors show a refreshingly bitter quality and pick up a buttery nuance with air. Finishes chewy and long, with lingering toastiness and a hint of anise. This Champagne has the heft to handle full-flavored food like strong cheeses or a buttery poultry dish."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Coessens Champagne Blanc De Noirs Largillier NV Product #27552 (In Stock)
Coessens Champagne Blanc De Noirs Largillier NV Coessens Champagne Blanc De Noirs Largillier NV

When we first encountered Jerome Coessens’s Blanc De Noirs Largillier in September, we were electrified.  We bought all we could then, but watched it vanish immediately – almost everyone who tried a bottle came right back for a case!  Through a special arrangement with local importer Potomac Selections, we’ve been able to secure a larger allocation of the just disgorged and released “L 12” bottling based on the 2011 harvest.  And, tasting it today, I can say with confidence it’s even better than the L 09 Wine Advocate rated 91 points and the brilliant L 11 we offered in the Fall!

The wine is 100% Pinot Noir from 35 year-old vines and older growing on the most clay-heavy sites within Coessens’s Largillier vineyard.  After gentle pressing, the base wine ferments, goes through malolactic fermentation, and gets months of lees contact all in stainless steel tanks.  Before disgorgement, Jerome conducts extensive bench trials to select the perfect dosage for each release – we have no data, but guess this is at about 9 grams per liter.

It’s a beautiful wine in the glass, pale gold in color with a gentle stream of tiny bubbles at first racing then drifting to the surface.  The aromas are pure and fresh, with complex scents of strawberry, straw, white chocolate, cherry blossom and chalk.  Take a sip and you’ll find the pinpoint fizz delivers amazing precision and delineation to the red berry, goldent apple, licorice, toast, ginger, limestone and citrus flavors.  Tangy red fruit, lemon, ginger, and salty mineral flavors linger on and on and on.  Try this a bit warmer than you expect – 50 degrees seems about right – and in a white wine glass instead of a flute for maximum impact.  Delicious all by itself, but try it with halibut, salmon, or event duck for a breathtaking pairing.

Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes De Vrigny Brut NV Product #17957 (In Stock)

Stunning 100% Pinot Meunier aged 3 years on the lees.

"Pungent, mineral-tinged pear and blood orange aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of honey and buttered toast. Juicy and precise, offering intense orchard fruit and red berry flavors braced by smoky mineral and ginger notes. Shows impressive clarity and length on the finish, which leaves bitter orange and toasty lees behind."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"As further indication of his respect for pure Meunier from the “Petite Montagne” immediately southwest of Reims, Egly now ages his NV Brut Les Vignes de Vrigny Disg. 2/2013 for three years in bottle prior to disgorging. There is a Meunier-typical profusion of flowering and leafing things in the nose, along with intimations of piquant toasted nuts, a bite of black pepper, kirsch, and sea breeze, the two last named aspects becoming the basis of an infectiously juicy, invigorating, and mouthwatering palate impression and finish. There is a generosity here combined with subtlety and intrigue that once again demonstrate the wisdom of having decided to dedicate a bottling to these vines that Francis Egly and his wife inherited from her family a few years ago. Plan to follow this for another couple of years and perhaps beyond."Wine Advocate 91 points

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Grand Cru Millesime 2005 Eric Rodez Ambonnay Grand Cru Millesime 2005

Once again, just stunning value here for Grand Cru vintage Champagne. A blend of 55 % Pinot Noir and 45 % Chardonnay from the middle of the Grand Cru hillside, it's beautiful just to look at with a light golden color and fine bubbles.  Aromas of fresh hay, yeast, pear, tarragon, and sweet orange peel lead to a full-bodied, richly textured, mouthful of pear, blood orange, pastry, smoke, earth, and toast flavors.  The texture here is fantastic, at once creamy and fresh with bright citrusy acids lifting the toast, smoke and fruit notes and a melange of clove, honey, and smoke flavors lingering on the long, refreshing, finish.  Already drinking beautifully, this will actually get better over the next two or three years and hold beyond that.  Fantastic wine, amazing value.
