"Light gold. Ripe yellow plum and dried pear on the intensely perfumed nose, with complicating notes of white flowers and chalk. Silky, concentrated, sappy citrus and orchard fruit flavors and notes of dusty minerals, anise and honey. Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut Nv 375ml Product #25072 (In Stock)
Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut Nv 375ml Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut Nv 375ml

Coming from a very storied tradition of Bouzy Champagne producers, the Pierre Paillard Brut is one of the softest, prettiest Champagnes we've found in a long time. A blend of '06/'07 vintage Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chard fruit, Brut is has amazing aromas of fresh yellow pear and chalky mineral. The palate will blow you away with green apple and one of the softest textures you ever tasted. The wine finishes with flavors of soft cashews and genty caramalized pears.

"(60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, from Bouzy; based on 2007, with 20% reserve wine from 2006) Light, bright yellow. Ripe pear and redcurrant aromas are complicated by rose oil, anise and toasty lees. A hefty, palate-coating Champagne that offers pliant orchard fruit flavors and a touch of orange marmalade. Finishes smooth and broad, with very good sappy persistence. I'd serve this broad-shouldered Champagne with a richly sauced poultry dish or strong cheeses."International Wine Cellar 90 points

Think you can't get REAL Champagne UNDER $30? I'll admit, we didn't think so either!  This delectably crisp, mineral-driven Champagne is actually a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier. Big citrus flavors hint at Meyer lemon and lime zest, paired with a gentle toasted biscuit and undercut with a racy, zinging acidity that really keeps this dancing not just across your tongue, but your whole mouth! Champagne lovers, rejoice!

Duval Leroy Champagne Brut NV Product #16319 (In Stock)
Duval Leroy Champagne Brut NV Duval Leroy Champagne Brut NV

Since its formation in 1848, Duval-Leroy has grown to top-tier levels in Champagne, but remains family-owned and managed.  The house style emphasizes elegance and grace over power and pure force, with Chardonnay usually accounting for 80-90% of this wine’s blend.  For the past 10 years or so, Duval-Leroy has moved from strength-to-strength, with two appearances in the Wine Spectator Top 100 in the past 5 years.

The newest release of Duval-Leroy’s main wine – the Brut Champagne – is easily the best of the past 3-4 years. There’s plenty of concentration and depth to the wine, but the main theme here is elegance.  Mouthfilling, but bright, accessible but complex, immediately appealing but worthy of attention, at this price it’s hard to imagine a better value in “real” Champagne for New Year’s!

“An elegant wine, with a delicate grain and subtle, citrusy acidity. Offers flavors of yellow apple, clementine and licorice snap, with hints of marzipan and coconut and a fresh, creamy finish. Drink now through 2018.”Wine Spectator 92 points

R Dumont Champagne Douce Cuvee (Demi-Sec) NV Product #24594 (In Stock)
R Dumont Champagne Douce Cuvee (Demi-Sec) NV R Dumont Champagne Douce Cuvee (Demi-Sec) NV

Don’t let the “demi-sec” designation scare you off – this is just blisteringly good Champagne that just happens to have the very slightest touch of sweetness at the end.  The Dumont brothers start with estate grown Pinot Noir and a tiny bit of Chardonnay from their 54-acre vineyards in
Champignol-lez-Mondeville.  After blending each year’s base wines, they put the wine into bottle for its secondary fermentation….and then leave it there for 5 years of gentle aging.  At the same time the wine is bottled, Dumont also reserves the sugar that will be used for dosage and ages that for 5 years too!

The result is one of the most delicious Champagnes in this style you’ll ever taste and just silly quality for the price.  Yeasty, creamy, full of ripe orchard fruit and spice, and with tiny, generous, bubbles, this wine goes down way too sneaky fast.  The base wines are such high quality and so intense that the “demi-sec” level of dosage really just softens and rounds the wine out while highlighting the fruit rather than delivering any sugary sweetness.  Classy, delicious, rare, hand-made, and well priced.  Buy it.

Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V Product #7655 (In Stock)
Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V

Like Pierre Paillard, Jean Vesselle is a small, family-run, Champagne estate in the village of Bouzy.  As expected in Bouzy, the wines rely mainly on Pinot Noir (80%) with a little Chardonnay for cut and complexity.  Very traditional winemaking here including nearly 3 years on the lees in bottle. A smoky, toasty nose shows of hints of strawberry, pear, and spice.  Then fresh and very pure in the mouth with red berry fruit, spice, and plenty of toast, biscuit, and brioche.  Very long and energetic on the finish, this is delicious to just drink but will work beautifully at table with lighter fish or poultry dishes.

Vesselle Rose De Saignee Brut V Vesselle Rose De Saignee Brut V

While the review is for a previous release, Steve Tanzer's assessment is spot on for this release as well!

"Light, amber-tinged red; nothing pink about this. Deep cherry and dark berry aromas are initially brooding, then open slowly to offer spicy blood orange and violet qualities. Fleshy, lightly sweet blackberry and candied cherry flavors stain the palate and are complicated by floral pastille and bitter chocolate notes. A singular, fascinating Champagne that could handle rich red meat dishes or the richest, funkiest cheeses with ease. This has more depth and power than many red Burgundies."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"Light red with a frothy mousse. Cranberry, redcurrant and wild strawberry on the nose, with cherry skin and dark chocolate adding complexity. This smells like a Kir Royale mixed by Dali, or maybe Magritte. The expression of red fruits is remarkable for its depth and purity. Creamy red berry and cherry preserve flavors are firmed by gentle acidity and pick up an exotic floral quality on the back end. Finishes with excellent clarity and great persistence. I'd serve this as I would a light, exuberant red Burgundy."International Wine Cellar 93 points

Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru Nv Product #25835 (In Stock)
Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru Nv Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru Nv

We're self-admitted freaks for bubbles around here, but when it comes to true Champagne, we're a little picky.  It's not cheap, and we won't bring something new in unless it really wows us.  This wowed us.
Guy Larmandier is a family-owned domaine, with vineyards in the Cote des Blancs, one of the most prestigious regions of Champagne.  This Grand Cru bottling is made from 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Cramant. It's the kind of handmade grower Champagne we are thrilled to be able to sell - and drink!
At first sniff, this smells like the skin of a really good, juicy pear.  As the bubbles dissipate a bit, aromas of white flowers and brioche emerge. There's a hint of roasted hazelnuts as well. Despite its minimum 36 months of aging, it's crisp and refreshing on the palate, with flavors of pear, a touch of lemon curd, and a beautiful chalky minerality. The flavors are sophisticated, but never austere. This would, of course, be a no-brainer for anniversaries and New Years' Eve, but sometimes a top-quality Champagne's sparkle and delicate layers are best appreciated on a humdrum Tuesday with no distractions.  Pop this open on movie night with a much smaller guest list and feel like you just spent a million bucks.

Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Noirs "Act I" 2007 Product #26005 (In Stock)
Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Noirs Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Noirs

The Blanc de Noirs "Les Maillerettes" bottling is the more dark and brooding than the Blanc de Blancs, with just-ripe blackberry, mushroom, and forest floor aromas dominating the nose.  On the palate it's as crisp and refreshing, but with a bit more body and depth than the Blanc de Blancs.  It opens with bright citrus flavors, but quickly transitions into strawberry and blackberry fruit, and a savory, mushroomy quality.

The lieu-dit gets its name because it’s the “mother plot,” the vineyard from which Paillard selects cuttings to propagate the rest of its Pinot Noir vineyards and maintain the genetic identity of its holdings. In a village dominated by Pinot Noir, it’s especially important that their Pinot clones be not only excellent, but also unique to them.

While this would be fantastic as an aperitif or on its own like any good Champagne, the Blanc de Noirs will really shine with serious food - think duck, salmon, mushroom risotto - anything with earthy flavors and an unctuous texture to play against the crisp acidity and bracing effervescence.

Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Blancs "Act I" 2007 Product #26006 (In Stock)
Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Blancs Pierre Paillard Champagne Blanc De Blancs

Pierre Paillard's Blanc de Blanc "Act 1" 2007, so named to stay within a legal loophole in France's vintage designation system, opens with a sophisticated whiff of white flowers and fresh almonds.  Aromas of fresh pear, golden apple, and brioche come in as well.  On the palate it's lemony and zippy, with a beautiful minerality and yeastiness on the finish.

Bouzy is a Grand Cru village that grows mostly Pinot Noir, and the Act 1 Blanc de Blancs is one of only two all-Chardonnay Champagnes made in Bouzy.  This is a single-vineyard to boot, from the "Les Mottelettes" lieu-dit vineyard.  Blanc de Blancs is always thought to be at the top of the prestige Champagne hierarchy.  It’s a little lighter in body, more luxurious, and often a bit more expensive than bottlings blended with the red grapes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

This is a Blanc de Blancs that delivers all of that class and sophistication at far less than what you would normally pay for a single-vintage, 100% Chardonnay Champagne from all Grand Cru fruit.  There is a bit more power and concentation here than in the Brut NV, but it retains all of the signature Paillard sparkle and fun.  Potato chips and popcorn are always great matches with Champagne, but anything crispy and golden would be especially wonderful with this beautiful Blanc de Blancs.

"Disgorged January 25, 2012. Pale yellow-gold. Orchard and pit fruits on the toasty, gently spicy nose and in the mouth. Musky pear and peach pit flavors show a refreshingly bitter quality and pick up a buttery nuance with air. Finishes chewy and long, with lingering toastiness and a hint of anise. This Champagne has the heft to handle full-flavored food like strong cheeses or a buttery poultry dish."International Wine Cellar 90 points
