A terrific bottle of classic and classy real Champagne, priced to share with a crowd.  Wine Spectator's review of last year's release still seems on point:

"This Champagne offers an array of flavor, including toasted brioche, Gala apple, lemon zest, graphite and ginger, with a touch of honey. Elegant, but with good intensity and a moderate, nut-tinged finish."  Wine Spectator 92 points

Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut NV Product #24253 (In Stock)
Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut NV Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut NV

The last release of our favorite "regular" Champagne clocked in with a 92 point rating and spot on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list for 2013.  This is even better!  A 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, all from Grand Cru vineyards.  One of the best Champagne values we know.

"Vivid yellow-gold. Potent red berry, blood orange and quince on the perfumed nose, with a chalky nuance adding lift and focus. Offers sappy red fruit and citrus pith flavors that flesh out and deepen with air while picking up a sexy floral quality. Closes with building spiciness, a hint of toasty lees and excellent clarity and length."International Wine Cellar 92 points

L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv Product #28947 (In Stock)
L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv

This is utterly captivating Champagne, based on Pinot Meunier (45%), about 25% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and the rest Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau.  About half is from 2010, 25% from 2009, and the rest from a solera going back to 1998.  As Wine Advocate says, "If that sounds like a recipe for delivering complexity, you’re right!"

"Pungent aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and fig, with a gingery accent adding lift. Sappy, penetrating citrus fruit and floral flavors are given a refreshingly bitter character by notes of pear skin and peach pit, with a waxy note coming up on the back half. A smoky nuance lingers on the finish, which shows very good clarity and length."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"With increased acreage and experience, the unorthodoxy of “unknown” cepages has now trickled down to the level of Aubry’s “basic” NV Brut Disg. 4/2013. This contains just one-quarter each Chardonnay and Pinot; 45% Meunier; and a mixture of Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau (a.k.a. Pinot Gris). Nearly half of it is reserve wine, and more than half of that from a solera going back to 1998. If that sounds like a recipe for delivering complexity, you’re right and won’t be disappointed! Bittersweet perfume suggestive of gentian and iris mingles with intimations of fresh lime and sea breeze that in turn manifest themselves on a seductively silken palate in both juicy, vivacious exuberance and mouthwatering saliva-inducement. A scallop-like sweetly saline and mineral amalgam takes hold in a vibrant finish that leaves me caught between the urge to linger and the urge to take the next sip. This exceptional value by appellation standards is almost sure to prove worth following for several years, even if, sadly, few wine enthusiasts are likely to put that prediction to the test."Wine Advocate 92 points

"Light, bright yellow. Intensely perfumed blood orange, yellow apple and floral scents are underscored by smoky minerals and iodine. Sappy and broad on entry, then more taut in the mid-palate, offering bitter citrus fruit, red berry and succulent herb flavors that show very good depth. Notes of smoky lees and anise build on the nicely focused finish."International Wine Cellar 93 points

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Rose NV Product #17167 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Rose NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Rose NV

This release of Eric's Rose is the most compelling yet, from the bright salmon pink color to the luscious mouthful of strawberry and cherry fruit accented with juicy blood orange and smoky toast notes. Eric makes a base wine of about two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay (including up to 40% reserve wines) colored by about 8% red Pinot Noir juice from his Ambonnay vineyards.

The wine bursts with aromas of wild strawberries and toast aromas and fills your mouth with ripe strawberry and tangy cherry fruit surrounded by juicy acids and a touch of biscuit. The creamy texture and round mouthfeel make this all too easy to gulp – but slow down and enjoy the ride, especially with foods like smoked salmon or duck.

Voirin Jumel Brut Cuvee 555 Nv Product #29180 (In Stock)
Voirin Jumel Brut Cuvee 555 Nv Voirin Jumel Brut Cuvee 555 Nv

Here's a stunning wine from a tiny estate (just 12 hectares of vineyard) you've probably never heard of - but one that's gaining plenty of attention in Europe for this luxurious oak-aged Champagne.  Oak and Champagne are not always the best of friends, as the impact of wood (especially new wood) can easily overwhelm Champagne's subtle nuance and grace.  Here, though, winemaker Patrick Voirin uses very old Burgundy barrels (15-20 years-old) for just 4-6 months aging.  Combined with 6-7 years aging in bottle on the lees, this results in a fanstaically rich and complex Champagne very much in the style of Bollinger or Krug.

Cuvee 555 – named for the estate’s home address at 555 Rue de la Liberation in the village of Cramant.  It’s 100% Chardonnay from the Cramant Grand Cru vineyard called Clos du Mardu. We think it’s a blend of 2007 and 2006 vintage wines, but the information is sketchy!  Nothing sketchy about the wine though. You'll find rich, powerful, aromas and flavors of fresh baked bread, spices, lemon peel, toasted nuts and salty caramel here with tiny bubbles and bright acids providing lift and mouthwatering refreshment.

A classic bottle of Champagne, elegant and bright with lovely bubbles and plenty of yeasty toast and biscuit note over the cut apple, citrus, and white peach fruit.  A blend of Pinot Meunier (about half), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with three years on the lees, this is richly textured and ripe but finishes clean, toasty, and mouthwatering. Very fine value from one of Champagne's most important estates.

"40% pinot meunier, 30% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay; L200352): Light, bright gold. Fresh red berries, orange zest and white flowers on the perfumed nose. Juicy and precise, offering energetic redcurrant and blood orange flavors that show good concentration and a supple texture. Pierre Gimonnet Brut 1er Cru Blanc De Blancs NV Product #27255 (In Stock)
Pierre Gimonnet Brut 1er Cru Blanc De Blancs NV Pierre Gimonnet Brut 1er Cru Blanc De Blancs NV

All Didier Gimonet makes is 100% Chardonnay Champagne, all aged in steel with no malolactic fermentation.  This wine from 1er Cru fruit is cool, bracing, and very pure.

"Quince and lemon pith on the nose, with deeper notes of honey and anise emerging with aeration. Fleshy but dry, with impressive depth to its spicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors. A bitter herb nuance carries through a long, clinging finish, which echoes the honey note."International Wine Cellar 91 points

"Gimonnet’s NV Brut Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Cuvee Cuis fills out nicely on the mid-palate, with a little more mid-palate pliancy and richness than the Belles Annees. Green pears, flowers and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that flow through to a wiry finish endowed with significant energy and polish. This is a striking effort from Gimonnet."Wine Advocate 90 points

"Fresh, offering a lively bead, with flavors of white peach, apple, biscuit and blanched almond that show a hint of passion fruit. Shows fine texture and an open-knit, mineral-tinged finish."Wine Spectator 91 points

The 1er Cru vineyard of Vertus is famous for Pinot Noir in addition to the Chardonnay you'd expect here along the Cote de Blancs.  Buy Larmandier blends 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir here from two vintages (2009-2008 here) and ages the wine for 36 months before disgorgement.  The result is a sleek beauty of a wine that opens with rich aromas of toast, nuts, mineral and lemon.  In the mouth, plenty of Chardonnay cut and drive elevated with hints of earthy red fruit and richness from the Pinot Noir.  Clean, toasty, precise, and extremely long with a finish that won't quit.

Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru NV Product #25835 (In Stock)
Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru NV Guy Larmandier Blanc De Blancs Brut Grand Cru NV

We're self-admitted freaks for bubbles around here, but when it comes to true Champagne, we're a little picky.  It's not cheap, and we won't bring something new in unless it really wows us.  This wowed us.
Guy Larmandier is a family-owned domaine, with vineyards in the Cote des Blancs, one of the most prestigious regions of Champagne.  This Grand Cru bottling is made from 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Cramant. It's the kind of handmade grower Champagne we are thrilled to be able to sell - and drink!

At first sniff, this smells like the skin of a really good, juicy pear.  As the bubbles dissipate a bit, aromas of white flowers and brioche emerge. There's a hint of roasted hazelnuts as well. Despite its minimum 36 months of aging, it's crisp and refreshing on the palate, with flavors of pear, a touch of lemon curd, and a beautiful chalky minerality. The flavors are sophisticated, but never austere. This would, of course, be a no-brainer for anniversaries and New Years' Eve, but sometimes a top-quality Champagne's sparkle and delicate layers are best appreciated on a humdrum Tuesday with no distractions.  Pop this open on movie night with a much smaller guest list and feel like you just spent a million bucks.

Coessens Champagne Blanc De Noirs Largillier NV Product #27552 (In Stock)
Coessens Champagne Blanc De Noirs Largillier NV Coessens Champagne Blanc De Noirs Largillier NV

100% Pinot Noir from 35 year-old vines and older growing on the most clay-heavy sites within Coessens’s Largillier vineyard.  After gentle pressing, the base wine ferments, goes through malolactic fermentation, and gets months of lees contact all in stainless steel tanks.  Before disgorgement, Jerome conducts extensive bench trials to select the perfect dosage for each release.

It’s a beautiful wine in the glass, pale gold in color with a gentle stream of tiny bubbles at first racing then drifting to the surface.  The aromas are pure and fresh, with complex scents of strawberry, straw, white chocolate, cherry blossom and chalk.  Take a sip and you’ll find the pinpoint fizz delivers amazing precision and delineation to the red berry, goldent apple, licorice, toast, ginger, limestone and citrus flavors.  Tangy red fruit, lemon, ginger, and salty mineral flavors linger on and on and on.  Try this a bit warmer than you expect – 50 degrees seems about right – and in a white wine glass instead of a flute for maximum impact.  Delicious all by itself, but try it with halibut, salmon, or event duck for a breathtaking pairing.

"Coessens’ NV Brut Blanc de Noirs l’Argillier L09 represents a mainstay cuvee of the estate. Freesia and rowan; pistachio and almond extracts; apple, Ranier cherry and quince combine for a hauntingly alluring aromatic display that reminded me slightly of a Vouvray or Montlouis. On a silken-to-creamy palate, a striking sense of transparency allows for persistent, liquid expression of the aforementioned floral perfumes, accompanied by nuances of salinity, chalkiness, and struck-flint pungency. In the satisfyingly juicy and interactive finish, nine grams of residual sugar are not the least bit evident as such. This lovely bottling ought to show well for at least a couple of years."Wine Advocate 91 points

We were fortunate to introduce you to the first ever release of this rare 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru vineyards of Bouzy (better known for its Pinot Noir).  In 2009, the Paillard family captured the beautiful fruit of a ripe vintage without sacrificing any cut or verve.

"Pale gold. A sexy, expressive bouquet evokes ripe Meyer lemon, pear, jasmine and iodine, with strong floral and chalky mineral qualities adding complexity. Stains the palate with vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavors, putting on weight and gaining power as it opens in the glass. This dense yet lively blanc de blancs finishes with superb thrust and resonating mineral and floral qualities. No way that I'd have guessed this Champagne came from a ripe vintage."International Wine Cellar 93 points
