Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015 Product #30615 (In Stock)
Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015 Dom Bernier (Les Frères Couillaud) Chardonnay 2015

The brothers Couillaud are among the most outstanding winegrowers of the western Loire Valley.  And while their Muscadet is terrific, it was this complex and distinctive Chardonnay that captured our attention.  The 2015 harvest yielded plump, ripe, Chardonnay fruit with plenty of heft and balancing acidity.  They fermented about 8% in barrel and the rest in concrete tanks, allowing all of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation.  The result is an amazingly rich, creamy, almost Meursault-like Chardonnay with the zesty cut and minerality of a top Chablis.  Honey, cream, chalk, and tart green apple aromas and flavors are delivered with nice energy and drive and linger on a long, mouthwatering, brilliantly complex finish.  A tad richer and deeper than the 2014, but just as pure and mineral and delicious.

Alain De La Treille Sauvignon Blanc Touraine 2015 Product #31003 (In Stock)

Touraine marks the dividing line between the Loire Valley's Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc regions (Chinon, Vouvray, etc.) to the west and the greatest Sauvignon vineyards (Sancerre, Pouilly Fume) to the east. Prone to harshness and too much green herb, really fine Touraine Sauvignons hint at Sancerre minerality with a big more ripe, rich, fruit.  This is a very good one, fleshy and round with peach, green melon, and lemon fruit and just a bare hint of fresh cut grass. Great with seafood, salads, and reading a book by the pool.

Ch De Chasseloir Muscadet Chereau Carre 2014 Product #30732 (In Stock)

One of Muscadet's oldest and best estates turned out a classic wine in the cool, restrained, 2014 Loire vintage.  Aromas of sea shell, lime skin, and a hint of bready lees carry through on the bright, energetic, palate.  A fine mouthwatering Muscadet that has enough buffering richness (from time on the lees) to enjoy on it's own as well as with the classic pairing of raw oysters and shellfish.

Henri Bourgeois Sauvignon Petit Bourgeois 2015 Product #30816 (In Stock)
Henri Bourgeois Sauvignon Petit Bourgeois 2015 Henri Bourgeois Sauvignon Petit Bourgeois 2015

Basically a “baby Sancerre”, this exciting young Sauvignon Blanc is grown on the same chalky slate soils you’ll find across Sancerre from 10-40 year-old vines, fermented in stainless steel and allowed to rest 3 months on the fine lees.  The vineyard is located just outside the legal boundary of Sancerre, but the flavors make you feel right in the middle!

Generous, fresh, aromas of fresh flowers, just cut grass, white grapefruit, and a hint of wet stones burst from the glass.  Then you’ll find a tad more richness and zest to the crisp citrus and green apple fruit, tangy gooseberry, and fresh grass.  As the refreshing acidity wells up to make your mouth water, a bit of Sancerre’s trademark “gun flint” character shows underneath the juicy bright fruit.  There’s a wonderful rich/brisk, sweet/sour contrast in this wine that will delight and fascinate with every sip.  Served cold, it’s thirst quenching and refreshing.  Let it warm up a touch and it’s layered, complex, and a fantastic match for seafood, fresh vegetables, and – of course – goat cheese.

Certified Organic Grapes.  Betes Curieusses is a partnership of two Jeremies - Huchet and Mourat - who are making some of the most exciting terroir-driven Muscadet we've ever seen.  This wine comes from vineyards laced with decomposed granite over sand, warm soils that give remarkable ripeness.  It's a round, fruit-filled, Muscadet - almost creamy in texture - with a touch of peach to complement the salty mineral and lime zest.  Brisk, bracing, and utterly delicious.

J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2015 Product #30626 (In Stock)
J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2015 J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rose 2015

From the Western Loire Valley appellation of Fiefs Vendeens, this ripe and juicy blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Negrette is even more fun in the stellar 2015 vintage.  Ripe aromas of crushed cherry and watermelon and a touch of fresh herb lead the way to a big mouthful of cherry/berry fruit and a fresh, juicy, mouthwatering finish.  Lip-smacking and fun to smell, drink and just admire – especially in the throw-back old-school bottle.  Great stuff to sip or enjoy with any spring or summer meal.

J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rouge 2015 Product #30659 (In Stock)
J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rouge 2015 J. Mourat Fiefs Vendeens Collection Rouge 2015

Starts with a base of the Loire Valley’s two most important red grapes, 40% each of Pinot Noir (often seen in Sancerre Rouge) and Cabernet Franc (the grape of Chinon and the Central Loire).  Then, Jérémie adds in 20% Negrette, a grape best known for giving gutsy, black-fruited, softly textured, wines in the much warmer Fronton region of Southwestern France. Growing on poor, well-drained, soils and sheltered from cold Atlantic winds on the South/Southeastern sides of hills, all three of these grapes get nicely ripe and combine to deliver something very special here.

You’ll find big aromas of crushed black cherry, blueberry, crushed herb and warm spice wafting from your glass, and also a touch of fresh herb.  On the palate, it’s richer and more mouthcoating than you’d expect in a Loire Valley red, with generous flavors of chunky black raspberry and cherry at the core and accents of sweet spice, warm stone, and crushed herb acting as a frame.  The finish of dusty crushed stone, fine tannin, and fresh, clean, just-picked, berries makes you smile and pulls you back for another sip.  A great match for picnic or cookout foods, or give it a light chill for maximum sipping refreshment!

J. Mourat Chenin - Chardonnay Val De Loire 2015 Product #30660 (In Stock)
J. Mourat Chenin - Chardonnay Val De Loire 2015 J. Mourat Chenin - Chardonnay Val De Loire 2015

A rich but vibrant white made from the Loire Valley’s most important white grape – the Chenin Blanc made famous by Vouvray – and Burgundy’s Chardonnay grape, which has thrived in warmer spots here for years.  The vineyards are in the Fiefs Vendeens AOC, just a few miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean.  The balance of warm Maritime sunshine and brisk Atlantic breezes allow the grapes to ripen fully while retaining plenty of summer refreshment value and cut.

Delivers a wild blend of citrus (white grapefruit and lemon rind) aromas with accents of tree fruits like apples and peaches. On the palate it’s wonderfully fresh and bright from first to last, with notes of peach, apricot and apple lingering under zesty lime juice acidity.  A joyful wine of great distinction to simply sip or pair with summer salads and seafood.

Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015 Product #30753 (In Stock)
Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015 Bedouet Clos Des Grands Primos Muscadet Sevre Et Maine 2015

Having converted his Clos des Grand Primos vineyard to certified organic farming, Michel Bedouet is delivering on Muscadet’s potential.  The vineyard is a rocky mess of granite, schist and gneiss - no fun to farm, but wonderful for Muscadet's Melon de Bourgogne grape.  The 2015 delivers all the saline minerality and chiseled cut you'd expect from fine Muscade, but also a generous roundness to the texture and a plenty of ripe apple and tangy lemon-lime fruit. You’ll taste the benefits of extended aging on the lees – spent yeast cells left after fermentation – in the wine’s wet stone and chalk minerality, but love how the fresh fruit holds center stage and pumps on through a long finish of lemon, apple, lime zest and fresh thyme.  Sure, it’s a great wine for shellfish, but you’ll love it with almost any summertime dish or simply all on its own.

Dom De La Chanteleuserie Bourgueil Alouettes 2014 Dom De La Chanteleuserie Bourgueil Alouettes 2014

As Wine Advocate wrote a few years ago, "Thierry Boucard’s Bourgueils from Domaine de la Chanteleuserie and the downright ridiculous value they offer should win many new converts to the cause of the Loire Cabernet Franc."  This is 100% Cabernet Franc raised all in tank, and it was one of the first wines imported by Kermit Lynch back in the 1970s.  The 2014 edition delivers fresh, crunchy, cherry and red-currant fruit with a nice dose of crushed herb.  Finishes mouthwatering and fresh.  An easygoing bistro red.

Dom De Villargeau Coteaux Du Giennois 2015 Product #30763 (In Stock)

The Coteaux de  Giennois appellation is small - under 200 acres in total - and tends to get lost in the shadow of nearby Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume.  Owned by brothers Fernand and Jean-Francois Thibaut, Villargeau is the top producer in the region and crafts crackling, fresh, Sauvignon Blanc from vines growing on fractured slate and gravel.

You'll find big aromas of mixed citrus - grapefruit, lemon, lime - with a hint of cut grass and flinty stones in the background.  On the palate it's clear, juicy, and fresh, with green grape and white grapefruit flavors getting complexity from the gunflint and smoke notes that made Pouilly-Fume so famous.  Finishes crisp and clean and pulls you back for another sip.

Jean-Maurice Raffault Chinon Les Galuches 2015 Product #30914 (In Stock)

A great 2015, even better than the 89 point WS 2014.  The Spectator described that as, "Bright cherry and red currant fruit is liberally laced with tobacco and shiso leaf notes, giving this an almost snappy edge. A taut chalky spine runs through the finish."  In 2015, the wine is richer, rounder, and has more sweet fruit but finishes with fine energy and very fine tannins.  A bistro beauty!

From the Loire Valley's youngest AOC (1993), Cheverny is Sauvignon Blanc blended with the grower's choice of Arbois, Pineau Blanc, or - as here - 30% Chardonnay.  Cazin's wine serves up big aromas of white peach, ginger, spice and lots of dusty stone.  Ripe and round at first sip before turning pure and focused and brisk on the palate of green pear, orange peel, stone fruit and still more dusty mineral.  Long and vibrant on the finish; a wine you can drink all day and all night!

Savennieres, just across the river from the sweet wine region of Cote du Layon, is one of world's greatest sites for rich, wildly complex, and utterly dry Chenin Blanc.  This is a brilliant introduction to the delights of Savennieres.  Exotic aromas of peach, tart pear, green plum, honey suckle and crushed herb lead to bold flavors of peach, quince, honey, and bitter herb.  Rich and nicely dense but bone dry through the long, wildly complex, finish.

Dom Des Baumard Coteaux Du Layon Carte d'Or 2011 Dom Des Baumard Coteaux Du Layon Carte d'Or 2011

A brilliant late-harvest Chenin that crackles with energy - drink with almond desserts or on it's own.

"This selection of grapes from old vines is presented as the least sweet and the lightest of Baumard\'s late-harvest wines. It\'s clean and dynamic, a heady, layered chenin with scents of jasmine, orange and apple butter. The juiciness comes up against soil-inflected acidity, a fine, sandy grit to ameliorate the sweetness. Pour it with a savory almond torte."Wine & Spirits 93 points

"The acidity is almost shocking, cutting through the richness of the wine. Its sweet apple and lemon flavors balance the honey and maple syrup notes. The wine is still young, demanding aging over a decade at least. beautifully ripe. Screwcap." Wine Enthusiast 92 points

J. Mourat Rouge Grenouillere Pre-Phylloxeriques 2014 Product #30736 (In Stock)

A delicious rarity from out friends at J. Mourat.  About 150 years ago, someone planted a small (2 acre) plot of Negrette grapes on sandy soils in the eastern Loire Valley, just south of Muscadet. When the phylloxera louse arrived in the late 1800s, it devastated vines growing all around this vineyard, but wasn't able to survive in the sandy soils.  So, while other vineyards were abandoned or replanted, these grapes just kept on giving red grapes for spicy, dark fruited, juicy wine.

And so they keep right on doing today!  At age 150, the vineyard doesn't produce much - just 2 barrels/50 cases in 2014 - but what does come forth is elegantly delicious.  Black cherry and plum fruit plus a note of tobacco show on the nose and carry through on the juicy palate where licorice/anise notes add complexity and a touch of spice emerges at the end.  A delicious taste of history from the last own-rooted vines in this part of France.
