Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2011 Product #26770 (In Stock)
Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2011 Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2011

A lot more going on in this terrific value Malbec than the price suggests. Monteviejo is owned by the folks at Bordeaux's Ch Le Gay and the wines are made by up-and-commer (and former rock musician) Marcelo Pelleriti - and the combination is turning out some great wines even at this price level.  Very ripe aromas and flavors of plum and black cherry get complexity from oak spice and notes of fresh earth.  A bit of violet perfume adds to the party in this juicy, fun, red for burgers, chicken, or just sipping.

Santa Julia Malbec Sustainable 2011 Product #26403 (In Stock)
Santa Julia Malbec Sustainable 2011 Santa Julia Malbec Sustainable 2011

A fairly new project of Argentina's Familia Zuccardi estate, Santa Julia focuses on sustainable viticulture and pure, fresh, fruit flavors. Big, ripe, aromas and flavors of black cherry and berries with soft tannins and a pleasingly round, juicy, texture and just a hint of fresh herb.  A fine sipping Malbec and great with lighter foods.

"A fruitball of a Malbec, with bright, friendly aromas of berry, cola and cherry cough drop. It feels full, round and well balanced, with a black cherry flavor bearing a mild herbal underbelly. The finish is fruity without being heavy."Wine Enthusiast 87 points

Los Ailos Syrah-malbec 2011 Product #26846 (In Stock)
Los Ailos Syrah-malbec 2011 Los Ailos Syrah-malbec 2011

As much as we love Argentina's straight Malbec wines, they can get even better with the help of a blending partner.  In the Los Ailos, Syrah plays that role, taking what would have been a pleasant, juicy, red to a whole new level of richness and flavor.

The 2011 Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry and black plum.  Then, in the mouth, it's ripe and juicy with plenty of fresh black fruit, a little leather, and a nice touch of minerality.  It's balanced and fresh with a fine spread of ripe tannin on the back promising good things at table.  Very nice value.

Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2010 Product #26581 (In Stock)
Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2010 Bodega Benegas Malbec Juan Benegas 2010

This little gem WAY over delivers for its modest price.  Winegrower/maker Federico Benegas Lynch is a master of getting perfectly ripe fruit from his old-vine vineyards and, with help from master consultant Michel Rolland, turning out honest wines of great depth and character.  Here you'll find a fun, fruity, wine with earthy blackberry, blueberry, spice and coffee aromas and flavors.  An iron ore minerality adds complexity and the round tannins and bright acids just the right support.  It's fruitier and not quite as complex as Frederico's Estate Malbec, but just perfect for parties or pairing with everyday meals.

Angulo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon La Consulta 2011 Product #27168 (In Stock)
Angulo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon La Consulta 2011 Angulo Innocenti Cabernet Sauvignon La Consulta 2011

No question: this is less "serious" than Mariano Innocenti's 2011 Malbec, but, boy, is it fun to drink! Fresh, generous, aromas of currant, herb and spice mingle with notes of blackberry and tangy cherry in the mouth. A licorice root note gives this a little complexity, but not too much - this juicy, clean, and bright Cabernet is meant to enjoy with friends and a nice, fresh, burger.

"Lively aromas of cassis, black cherry, minerals and licorice. Supple on entry, then fine-grained and a bit less pliant in the middle, with dark berry and licorice flavors enlivened by minerality. Finishes firmly tannic but not dry or hard." International Wine Cellar 88 points

Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2011 Product #27169 (In Stock)
Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2011 Angulo Innocenti Malbec La Consulta 2011

In just his second vintage, Mariano Innocenti has hit a home run, turning out a Malbec that combines everything we love about this grape in one delicious (and great value) bottle.  The aromas are dark, even a bit brooding, at first with building aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and mocha.  Then ripe, bright, and juicy on the palate with boatloads of gorgeous blackberry, black plum, and currant fruit accented by notes of spice, mineral, and berry blossom.  Stays vibrant and juicy on the bright, clean, finish with currant and cherry flavors lingering nicely. Aging half the wine in used oak barrels allowed this to open up without gaining any heavy oak accents and leaves it perfectly positioned for anything from steaks on the grill to party sipping.

"Inky yet superfresh, with floral and spice accents to the chewy plum skin, raspberry and blueberry coulis fruit. Drink now through 2016."Wine Spectator 91 points

Here's what Mendoza Malbec is all about. From organic vineyards and older vines, this opens with a pure perfume of plum and raspberry fruit with floral and spice accents.  Round and complexly textured and flavored in the mouth, the fruit stays in the front with accents of stone, coffee, and cocoa.  Long and lingering finish over the sweet, ripe, tannins.  Excellent value.

Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2011 Product #26406 (In Stock)
Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2011 Catena Chardonnay Mendoza 2011

As always, this is a fresh bottle of Chardonnay with crisp apple, green melon and Bosc pear fruit with a touch of baking spice.  Juicy and showing less wood than in the past, it finishes with a touch of flint and lots of clean, juicy, fruit.

"There are notable changes in the approach of the 2011 Catena Chardonnay compared to previous vintages: 40% malolactic instead of 100%, a move to Mercurey barrels instead of Francois Freres, a reduction from 50% new oak to 20%. This vintage was also harvested 20 days earlier. It is a blend of three vineyards that are divided into lots at harvest. It is whole cluster pressed and aged for ten months in French oak. It demonstrates great clarity on the nose with scents of dried honey, linden, crushed stone and dried white flowers. The palate is well-balanced with crisp acidity and is a taut, focused Chardonnay with lively notes of tangerine and quince towards the finish. This is well-crafted and complex for its price point. Drink now-2016."Wine Advocate 90 points

Bodegas Monteviejo Gran Monteviejo 2007 Product #26843 (In Stock)
Bodegas Monteviejo Gran Monteviejo 2007 Bodegas Monteviejo Gran Monteviejo 2007

Here, Malbec is firmly on center stage (70% of the blend) with Syrah giving a meaty note and Merlot a touch more perfume and tannin.  Bigger, bolder, and more complex than the Petite Fleur, this wants grilled or roasted lamb or beef right now and will gain even more complexity and meaty, smoky, character over the next few years.  A winner.

“Bright saturated ruby. Cassis, black raspberry and sweet mocha oak on the nose. Lush and supple on entry, then concentrated and bound-up in the mid-palate, with a medicinal cast to the black cherry, licorice and chocolatey oak flavors. Finishes with substantial, broad tannins that coat the teeth.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

“The 2007 Gran Monteviejo is composed of 70% Malbec, 20% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Deep purple in color, it displays a nose of pain grille, pencil lead, roasted black fruits, violets, and exotic spices. This leads to an elegant wine with already complex flavors, exceptional concentration, and 2-3 years of aging potential. This impeccably balanced, pleasure-bent effort will be at its peak from 2012 to 2023.”Wine Advocate 92 points

Not sure how Wine Advocate missed this vintage, but this earned 92/93 points every vintage from 2006-2009 and in the upcoming 2011 vintage, too!  As WA has said in the past, this "has always over-delivered, offering competition to the likes of Kistler, Peter Michael, and Aubert at less than half the price."  Rich, creamy, and bursting with orchard and citrus fruit and just the right touch of butter and oak.

Even better than the nice review suggests, there's uncommon complexity and character here in a wine plenty big enough to enjoy with grilled or roasted meats.

"Good lift and precision to the aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, minerals and licorice. Lush, chewy and sweet, with sexy French oak complicating but not overwhelming the broad flavors of dark berries and bitter chocolate. Finishes with rich, ripe tannins and compelling sweetness."International Wine Cellar 90 points
