Avalon Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Product #28655 (In Stock)
Avalon Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Avalon Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Another solid vintage for what must be one of Napa's most consistent "top value" Cabernet Sauvignon's.  Sappy, fruit-forward, aromas of currant, cherry and blackberry lead to a soft, supple, mouthful of plum, currant and dark berry fruit with accents of cedar, fresh herb, and spice.  The plush velvet tannins give support but don't get in the way of enjoying this easygoing Napa red.

Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28698 (In Stock)
Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

We don't see this nearly often enough - a super-star winemaker who could easily fill his days (and pocketbook) doing just his own wines and consulting for a few high-end boutiques rolling up his sleeves, digging in, and making California wine you can afford to drink every day.  The winemaker is Aaron Pott - Food & Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2012 - and his partner is former sommelier Joseph Carr.  Together, Aaron and Joseph are creating a line of fresh and food-friendly wines with plenty of Napa Character and style – but at an eye-opening value price.

You’ll get good sense of why everyone is so excited about Napa’s 2012 Cabernets here, starting with the sweet and savory aromas of cherry, currant, bitter chocolate, roasted meat, and crushed mint.  The flavors follow the nose at first, but with air gain breadth and creaminess, coating your palate with layers of crushed blackberry, cassis, roasted meat, and rich chocolate.  Delicious stuff, but it’s the elegant structure, perfect balance, and sophisticated tannins lying underneath the long finish that are really exciting in a wine at this price.  A “real deal, real steal” bottle of Napa Cabernet you should not miss!

Educated Guess Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Product #27952 (In Stock)

The best vintage yet for this consistent winner in the "value Napa Cab" category.  It doesn't hurt that 95% of the fruit is from prime Rutherford and St. Helena vineyards or that the gutsy Cabernet gets a complexity boost from 6% Merlot and dashes of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. You'll find loads of black fruit (blackberry, currant, and cherry) framed by notes of spice box, chocolate, and crushed mint.  It's soft and supple and mouthfilling and the fruit gushes right on through the spicy chocolate and herb finish.  There's a touch of something like Rutherford dust at the end, just enough to stand up to a steak but not so much to interfere with everyday sipping.

Ca' Momi Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013 Product #29469 (In Stock)

If you thought the 90 point 2012 was good, the 2013 will blow you away!  Loads of rich, dark, fruit - plum, Bing cherry, raspberry and currant - are framed by sweet and savory wood notes of vanilla, chocolate, and spice.  Plenty of plush, smooth, Napa character here with classic Cabernet accents of dried herb and smoke.  Finishes rich and very smooth with black fruit, spice, and chocolate notes pumping on through a long, generous, finish. A lot of Napa Cabernet delight for the money!

Parcel 41 Merlot Napa Valley 2012 Product #28384 (In Stock)
Parcel 41 Merlot Napa Valley 2012 Parcel 41 Merlot Napa Valley 2012

"Parcel 41" was the original surveyor's designation for this winery's site in Napa, and the wine is a touch "old school" too! It's rock solid, right down the middle, Napa Merlot with flavors and aromas of redcurrant, coffee, vanilla and herb.  The texture is plump and soft in the middle before fine, firm, tannin comes up on the lightly creamy finish. Easy to like and drink on its own or with lamb or beef.

Rock-solid Napa Merlot here from the outstanding 2012 vintage at a very attractive price.  If you find a little extra complexity to the plummy, rich, fruit and accents of coffee and smoke, it's probably the 15% Cabernet Sauvignon adding a ripe currant note and the year spent in (mostly used) French oak.  Smoky herb and black fruit keep on pumping through the fine, soft, finish.

Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28433 (In Stock)
Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

Twenty Rows was founded to bring you “Napa Valley Wines You Can Drink Every Day” and, while the whole line-up is impressive, the benchmark Napa Cab remains the standout.  A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon softened with 10% Merlot, one taste and you’ll see that Twenty Rows is a big step up from even very good $20 California Cabs - in fact, it competes nicely with many $30-$40 Napa reds.

The 2012 is the best we've tasted here, with a new level of richness and depth to the black currant/cherry fruit and accents of cocoa and roasted coffee.  Still dense and rich, but with more lift and earthy complexity and a nice dark chocolate note on the smooth finish.  Drinking well now and sure to improve over 3-4 years.

Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Product #28468 (In Stock)
Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 Bonanno Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012

Not a lot of history here, with 2004 the Bonnano family's first vintage.  But, there's plenty of classic Napa Valley Cabernet character and class in the bottle.  A blend of Valley floor fruit from Rutherford, Oakville, St. Helena and Oak Knoll aged 20 months in (mostly used) French oak. Very Napa aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, crushed herb and cedar with a rich texture and plush, soft, tannins.  A prickle of juicy acidity at the end makes this especially fine with richer meats, but you can certainly just sip it, too.  Nice value.

Truth Lindsey's Cuvee Red 2012 Product #29296 (In Stock)
Truth Lindsey's Cuvee Red 2012 Truth Lindsey's Cuvee Red 2012

The folks at Axios - who also make long-time favorite Cab Worthy - call this their "bistro styled red," but it would need to be a pretty classy bistro for this stylish bottle to fit in!  About half Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cab Franc, this is perfectly ripe at under 14% and marked by sophisticated use of French oak (40% new). Plenty of juicy cherry and red berry fruit on the nose and palate with accents of spice, crushed herb, and a bit of vanilla cream.  With air, floral and sour cherry accents come out, a making it more interesting and even more refreshing.  Stays juicy and clean and easy drinking from first sip to last.

Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (Cabernet Blend) 2012 Product #28873 (In Stock)
Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (Cabernet Blend) 2012 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (Cabernet Blend) 2012

Founded in 1967, Chappellet quickly established itself as one of Napa’s premier Cabernet estates and the very first to prove the quality of what is now often called Napa’s Grand Cru:  Pritchard Hill.  The Pritchard Hill Cabernets are still some of Napa’s best and can age for decades – the 1969 is legendary and reportedly still fresh and vibrant today.  But, they also usually need years of cellar time before showing well, and Donn and Molly Chappellet wanted fans to have something to drink tonight.

Mountain Cuvee was created to provide immediate satisfaction and delight, and the 2012 edition does that and more.  A blend of  Cabernet Sauvignon (39%) and Merlot (35%) with 12% Malbec and smaller helpings of Petite Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, it ages in new and used French oak and comes out of the winery ready to enjoy.  The 2012 is a big, rich, wine with layers of currant, black cherry, blackberry, plum, cedar, smoke, and fresh herb aromas and flavors.  The texture is plush and velvety, with the ripe fruit largely hiding the ripe tannins that provide support for enjoying with food or time in cellar.  For all its size and depth, there’s nothing heavy or thick about this classic Napa Bordeaux blend, and it finishes long and fresh with just the right squirt of acidity.  A classy, well-made, Napa red you can enjoy right now at very attractive savings.

Calder Carignane 2013 Product #29238 (In Stock)
Calder Carignane 2013 Calder Carignane 2013

For this wine, Rory worked with a Mendocino vineyard planted to Carignane in 1942.  These 70 year-old head trained vines yield a tiny crop of flavorful berries with full phenolic ripeness at very low sugar levels.  I’ve had a lot of great Carignane in my time, but never one this lovely that clocks in at just 13.4% alcohol!

The aromas here are generous and a bit exotic, with the blueberry, leather and mineral notes expected in Carignane getting an extra boost of red cherry, sweet spice and sandalwood.  On the palate, sweet red and black cherry, raspberry, spice, and vanilla flavors ride on top of the grape’s classic hot stone minerality and very fine-grained tannins.  Crushed wild blueberry and sweet cherry flavors linger on the long, supple, finish.  This might age well, but I’d be inclined to drink it over the next 2-3 years while the fruit is so pure and pretty.  Highly recommended.

"Whoa. Rory Williams has found some old-vines carignane and rescued it from jug-wine anonymity with this electric, juicy and thrilling red that shows what California can do with top-quality juice handled simply, without a lot of tinkering. Alcohol by volume: 13.4 percent."   *** Washington Post

Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012 Product #27904 (In Stock)
Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012 Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley 2012

Chappellet has been turning out benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from its vineyards high on Prichard Hill for 40 years now, but it's their Napa Valley Chardonnay that's won the most fans here over the years.  The 2012 is made by blending fruit from cool vineyards near San Pablo Bay, the Napa side of Carneros, and a little from Oak Knoll just above Carneros.  It's barrel fermented and aged on the lees for creamy richness, but only one-third sees new wood and a bit more than half goes through malolactic fermentation (so the wine stays crisp and fresh).

California's 2012 harvest is shaping up to be an outstanding vintage, and Chardonnay's like this one show you why. The aromas are concentrated and generous, with scents of orange zest, pear, apple, lemon drop and pretty accents of baking spice and vanilla from the oak.  In the mouth, it delivers a lush mouthfull of peach and apple fruit with a good dose of lemon custard, creme fraiche, and sweet spice.  The finish is clean, bright, and focused with nice apple-like acidity and notes of toast and ginger lingering nicely.  This will actually flesh out and get even better over the next few years, although there's certainly no reason to not enjoy it right now!  Steal of a price, too.

Calder Charbono Napa 2011 Product #29239 (In Stock)

Charbono arrived in the US from France in the 1880s and was very popular at one time.  Now fewer than 70 acres remain and it's dying out quickly in France, too. That's too bad, because as this wine from 40 year-old Napa vines shows, it can make a complex, meaty, wine that's fully ripe at just 13% abv.  Fans of Rhone reds - especially those that get a little barnyardy - will love the complex, earthy aromas and flavors that complement the black fruit at the wine's core.  The black raspberry fruit pumps on to the finish with loads of earthy barnyard complexity.
