- Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2011 Product #27189 (In Stock)
-
-
Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) is a traditional Alto Adige red grape, but seldom seen outside the region. This example from the excellent Kaltern Caldaro co-op captivated us. It's a delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish. Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats. Great value, too.
- Villa San Martino Pinot Grigio 2011 Product #26860 (In Stock)
-
-
It’s hard to get excited about most Pinot Grigio at this price, but this crisp and lemony example from Fruili made us sit up and take notice. Pretty aromas of stone fruit, lemon zest, and a touch of mineral. In the mouth, fresh and bright with juicy flavors of cut apple, peach, lime and lemon and a mouthwatering, juicy, finish. Clean, bright, very refreshing - and great value!
- La Cappuccina Soave 2012 Product #27143 (In Stock)
-
-
Another piece of evidence for the excellence of the 2012 vintage (and the value at this much under-appreciated estate). Once again, 100% Garganega done in tank with 5 months lees contact for richness and depth. A rich, almost opulent texture to this lemon, mineral and grilled nut wine, with bitter citrus pith and orange zest on the mouthwatering finish. More than rich enough to enjoy solo, but a stunner with smoked, grilled, or poached fish!
- Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Grigio 2011 Product #25887 (In Stock)
-
-
Easily the best sub-$25 Pinot Grigio we’ve tried in years, this is Pinot Grigio for folks who like flavor with their crisp, refreshing, whites. At once crisp and rich and bursting with bright green pear, apple, peach and citrus and a long, mouthwatering, saline-inflected finish. Not surprising that Wine Enthusiast named this #39 on their Top 100 Wine Values of 2012!
"This gorgeous Pinot Grigio displays the fresh aromatic fragrances associated with cool-climate, mountain winemaking. Layers of jasmine, tangerine, cut grass and white almond appear on the bouquet, giving this wine a delicate and feminine personality. A spicy touch of acidity drives the clean, bright finish."Wine Enthusiast 90 points
- La Formica Soave DOCG 2011 Product #26771 (In Stock)
-
-
We (and many of you) loved the 2010 La Formica Soave for its marriage of rich texture and bright, refreshing, acids. The 2011 is at once richer than the 2010 – even more mouthfilling and round – and more fresh and vibrant. Once again, it’s 100% estate-grown Garganega, Soave’s best grape, hand harvested and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel (no oak to mask the flavors).
The color is classic Soave – golden yellow – as are the generous aromas of almonds, lemon zest, white flowers, apricot, and dash of fresh ginger. In the mouth, there’s the fantastic yin/yang of richness and zing that makes Soave so captivating. The texture is silky and round and coats your mouth completely, but the flavors are bright and fresh – Myer lemon, lime zest, tangy apricot, yellow apple and golden pear fruit with just a touch of honeysuckle and fresh almond. The citrusy acidity scrubs your palate clean as the boisterous fruit and honesuckle flavors go on and on. Excellent to sip on its own and a lovely match for simple chicken, freshwater fish, or crunch vegetable dishes. - Di Lenardo Pinot Grigio Fruili 2011 Product #26010 (In Stock)
-
-
The new vintage of one of our best selling party wines is here. As always, this is a light, fresh, take on Pinot Grigio that's loaded with apple, apricot, and apple fruit with accents of Acacia flower and a touch of almond. Juicy and fresh from front to back with nice, clean, acids and a lingering sense of almond blossom on the end. Fine value.
- Osel Ruche Monferrato 2010 Product #25987 (In Stock)
-
-
Ruche is a grape that has a long tradition in the Piemonte region of Italy. Though many people outside the area have probably never heard of it, it is as traditional as they come. Grown at fairly high elevations and in limestone soil, the finicky Ruche grape produces a wine soft, yet complex. Aromas of spiced cherry and florals fill the glass. On the palate, the wine has wonderful flavors of peppered dark cherries and soft plums. A delicious wine to have to with roasted pork tenderloin and even Asian dishes.
- Villa Brunesca Pinot Grigio 2012 Product #27087 (In Stock)
-
-
New to us, but sure to become a customer favorite! Pinot Grigio grown on the plains north of Venice don't often yield this kind of character. It's a rich, creamy, Grigio with lots of depth to the lightly candied pear and salty caramel flavors. Ripe pear features prominently in the nose and on the palate, with plenty of spicy pear and nectarine fruit lingering at the end. A powerhouse Pinot Grigio that will sing with Indian or Thai food.
- Nals Margreid Pinot Grigio Punggl 2011 Product #26182 (In Stock)
-
-
A terrific follow-up to the Tanzer 92 point 2010. Unusually focused and precise for Pinot Grigio, it finishes brisk and strong with mouth-coating flavors. We think the Wine Enthusiast review says it all!
This is delightful, with amazing intensity and unique smoothness. Aromas of honey, peach and cantaloupe linger on the finish, with a fresh note of mountain flower. This is a simple wine, but a perfectly executed one. Wine Enthusiast 92 points
- Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Pinot Bianco Vial 2011 Product #26028 (In Stock)
-
-
Not sure what's in the water these days at this excellent co-op in the Alto Adige, but we know what's in the bottle - a LOT of quality for the money. This is a stunning Pinot Blanc, bursting with crisp green and yellow fruit with juicy acids and a firm, focused, mineral finish. Perhaps the ultimate wine to pair with any crab dish, but impossible to resist on its own.
- Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Lagrein 2011 Product #27142 (In Stock)
-
-
Lagrein is sort of the Dolcetto of Alto Adige, the bold but flexible everyday red that pairs perfectly with cheese, sausage, and savory main courses. This one's a beauty, ripe and dark and loaded with earthy cherry and plum fruit and bitter chocolate notes. The texture is generous and round - making it a nice sipper - but bright acidity and fine tannins let it shine at table. Delicious and fine value.
- Adami Prosecco Tranquillo Giardino 2011 Product #26878 (In Stock)
-
-
"Tranquillo" means "still" - as in, this is wine from Prosecco that doesn't have any fizz! Fizzy Prosecco is a fairly recent "tradition" in the hills of Prosecco, but crisp, tangy, still white wine has been grown here for centuries. This is a throwback to that time, but with modern skills. It's a blend 0f 90% Glera and 10% Chardonnay, ripened to a brisk 11% abv and then fermented dry in stainless steel. As you'd expect, crisp and bright but with plenty of creamy, tropical, fruit and zesty lime character, too. Rare, mouthwatering, and lots of fun to drink.
- Santa Barbara Verdicchio Le Vaglie 2011 Product #26067 (In Stock)
-
-
Get ready to have your ideas about Verdicchio radically revised! This old-vine (30 years) Verdicchio from the village of Le Vaglie in the Marche explodes with clean peach and citrus fruit, a touch of anise and fresh herb flower, and masses of stony mineral complexity. At once elegant and muscular, this layered, mouthwatering, white will shine with seafood and rich poultry dishes.
- L' Antica Quercia Prosecco Superiore "Matiu" Brut NV Product #26553 (In Stock)
-
-
The oak tree on the label is a 600 year-old landmark near the winery and represents this estate's commitment to organic farming and handmade wines. This is a clean, crisp, Prosecco with fine fruit and accents of bitter almond and fresh herbs. Finishes dry and bright with a hint of 5 Spice. It's dry, mouthwatering, and keeps you coming back for sip after sip.
- Muri-gries Muller Thurgau 2012 Product #27121 (In Stock)
-
-
Even more concentration and beautiful aromas in the 2012 edition of this unusual Alto Adige white. A cross between Riesling and Sylvaner, Muller-Thurgau reaches its full potential here, with inviting aromas of white flowers and nutmeg. On the palate it's deliciously fresh, with a salty minerality on the finish that makes your mouth water for another bite of whatever you're eating! Wonderful as an aperitif or an accompaniment to fresh seafood, this is a delicious reminder of Italy's incredible wine diversity.
- Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre Valpolicella 2009 Product #26545 (In Stock)
-
-
Another great vintage for this robust Italian red with 30% dried grapes (like Amarone) from Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and a dash of Sangiovese.
"Flavors of blackberry, candied black currant and kirsch mix with hints of pomegranate, violet and balsamic in this open-knit, creamy red. Medium-bodied, with a lightly juicy finish. Drink now through 2017."Wine Spectator 89 points
- Venica Pinot Grigio Collio Jesera 2012 Product #27078 (In Stock)
-
-
From one of Fruili's best-known estates, this comes mainly from the Jersera vineyard, Slovenian for the “little lake” found nearby. Especially this year, more concentration than you often find in Pinot Grigio with plenty of orchard fruits and juicy acidity. Just a hint of the ocean in the aromas and on the long and lovely finish, making this a killer match for fish and seafood.
- Elena Walch Pinot Grigio Castel Ringberg 2011 Product #26190 (In Stock)
-
-
Elena Walch has rapidly become one of the most respected winegrower/winemakers in Italy's Alto Adige, and the 2011 edition of her single vineyard Pinot Grigio clearly demonstrates why. Fruit from old vines in the Castel Ringberg vineyard are carefully ripened, hand picked, and vinified and aged in 100% stainless steel. Very fresh and captivating aromas of white peach, honeysuckle and a hint of anise. Then, sappy and full in the mouth with ripe peach, minerals, and notes of almond and anise on the finish. It’s complex, rich but still has plenty of juicy acidity and mineralty to work well with seafood and lighter poultry dishes.
