Drops Of Jupiter California Red Wine Blend 2012 Product #28232 (In Stock)
Drops Of Jupiter California Red Wine Blend 2012 Drops Of Jupiter California Red Wine Blend 2012

From Train's Jimmy Stafford, a rock solid value red for sipping and grilling.  Ripe and fruit-forward with loads of blackberry and boysenberry fruit plus just a touch of plum pudding and spice.  Soft and wide open from first pour, this finishes with big, but very soft, tannins.  Jimmy and the boys suggest pairing with eggplant lasagna or  molten chocolate cake.  We were leaning to burgers and ribs, but who are we to argue with a rock star?

Here's a versatile and delicious California Chardonnay built to satisfy a crowd - and you!  Ripe, creamy, and fresh, the aromas and flavors feature juicy apple, pineapple, peach, citrus, and salty caramel. Mostly made in stainless steel for brightness and fruit, the 15% aged in oak delivers just a hint of smoke to complement the buttery notes on the back.  Lots of lees stirring gives it a creamy, round, mouthfeel and the juicy apple and sweet butter caramel flavors linger nicely on the fresh finish. Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #28169 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Chapoutier Bila-Haut wines have been favorites for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  Although how he managed to find such high-quality fruit in the difficult 2011 vintage is a mystery!

The 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petite Sirah and 10% Petit Verdot, all aged for a few months in used french oak.  It's full of lush currant, cassis, and black plum fruit with just the right accent of Bordeaux-like fresh herb.  Full-bodied and nicely ripe, the touches of oak spice and bitter chocolate add more complexity and the fine tannin will handle a steak easily - but there's no reason not to drink this all by itself. Hands down, the best value we've seen in California over the past two years.

Egret Pinot Noir California 2011 Egret Pinot Noir California 2011

Here's a very fine value in California Pinot Noir with excellent ripeness, balance (just 13.5% abv) and varietal character (i.e., it actually tastes like Pinot!).  Fruit from across the North Coast ferments cool and ages 10 months in mostly new oak.  Bright, ripe, black and Bing cherries take center stage with attractive accents of fresh earth, mushroom, and gentle oaky spice.  Soft and easygoing, it's a fine party or back porch Pinot that will work well with salmon, grilled pork, and mushroom-flavored dishes.

Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011 Product #28533 (In Stock)
Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011 Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay North Coast 2011

When you're the son and assistant winemaker for Napa legend Ric Forman, you really ought to know a thing or two about making great Chardonnay.  And, when you're married to another third-generation grape grower, you really ought to be able to bring in excellent fruit, too.  So, the only thing really surprising about the outstanding Tobias Vineyards Chardonnay 2011 from Toby and Dawn Forman is the price - sure tastes like $40 Chardonnay, but carries a very attractive sub-$20 price tag!

Made from fruit grown and purchased from around the North Coast, this gets a touch of oak and about 30% goes through malolactic fermentation for a touch of buttery creaminess. The aromas and flavors feature plenty of ripe apple, pear, pineapple and citrus fruit with a nice dose of spice.  The texture is creamy and rich, but the bright acids keep things fresh and pure. A terrific wine, especially at this price!

Josh Cellars Merlot 2011 Josh Cellars Merlot 2011

From Joseph Carr, this great value Merlot delivers a lot more than it's modest price suggests. Classic Merlot aromas and flavors of soft red plum, blackcurrant, and a touch of dried herb get a little boost of oak spice and mellow chocolate.  Plenty of fruit in this balanced, easygoing, Merlot that finishes softly with lingering fruit and herb.

Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012 Product #28498 (In Stock)
Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012 Grayson Cellars Pinot Noir Lot 5 2012

Grayson purchases grapes from around California to make small "Lots" of very good value for money wines.  This Pinot Noir is an excellent example. Unlike most California Pinots, it's not overripe or heavy (just 13.1% abv), but there is plenty of juicy berry and cherry fruit with accents of pomegranate, cranberry, and smoky wood spice. Very light tannins and bright, refreshing, acids make this a great choice for drinking with a chill or pairing with a nice cool salmon salad.

Field Recordings Fiction Blanc 2011 Field Recordings Fiction Blanc 2011

Winemaker Andrew Jones spends most of his time planting and tending vineyards around California, which allows him to get access to small lots of fine fruit from around the state.  Field Recordings is the label he uses for these small lot, idiosyncratic, wines. His 2011 Field Recordings white is a blend of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat that is ripe, sweetly fruited, and surprisingly food friendly. Loads of peach, orange, melon, lemon peel, and honeysuckle here accented by a big bunch of fresh flowers.  Round and rich in the mouth but dry and bright on the crisp finish.  Fun stuff, and sure to please anyone who likes Conundrum (but wants to spend a little less!).

Michael & David Phillips Petite Petite 2011 Product #27929 (In Stock)
Michael & David Phillips Petite Petite 2011 Michael & David Phillips Petite Petite 2011

Always one of our favorite "big" wines - as the winery says, "Like elephants whose size is imposing, Petite Petit is large!"  This year it's a blend of 85% Petite Sirah and 15% Petit Verdot.  The Petite Sirah gives full-bodied fruit and licorice notes while the Petit Verdot ads perfume and a touch of lavender.  As the winemaker says, "Offering a joyous explosion of color and fun, it is a substantial, dense, full-bodied, whopper style of wine loaded with pure black fruit and vanilla flavors that coat the palate. It reveals remarkable richness with a finish that is slightly dry and seems to linger."

Prisoner Wine Company Blindfold White 2012 Product #28335 (In Stock)
Prisoner Wine Company Blindfold White 2012 Prisoner Wine Company Blindfold White 2012

The blend sounds odd - Chardonnay plus Viognier and other Rhone varietals? - but it works very well here in a rich but nicely fresh white to sip on it's own or enjoy with spicy or Asian foods.

"A distinctive combination of 35% Chardonnay, 20% Roussanne, 20% Viognier and small quantities of Riesling, Semillon, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc, the 2012 Blindfold is a sleeper of the vintage. Reminiscent of the Sine Qua Non whites from further south, it bursts with honeyed, caramelized white fruits, rose petals and pineapple. Medium to full-bodied with good acidity, brilliant purity and a delineation that is uncommon for a wine with so much flavor, this beauty should drink well for 2-3 years. I hope we see more blends such as this."Wine Advocate 93 points

Prisoner Wine Company Saldo Zinfandel 2012 Product #28334 (In Stock)
Prisoner Wine Company Saldo Zinfandel 2012 Prisoner Wine Company Saldo Zinfandel 2012

The most impressive vintage for Saldo yet!  As always, mainly Zinfndel (85%) plus Petite Sirah (9%) and a dash Syrah from top vineyards all across California.  In this great Zinfandel vintage, there's as much ripe flavor as ever - luscious dark  raspberry, boysenberry, blackberry fruit - and plenty of cracked pepper, dark chocolate and roasted coffee and spice accents. But, there's a touch more focus, precision and class here than you'd expect and even as the fruit and spice flavors gush through the wine's finish, things stay poised and even refreshing.  Fun to sip and a great match for big BBQ flavors!

The Prisoner 2012 Product #27691 (In Stock)
The Prisoner 2012 The Prisoner 2012

The Prisoner is not for the faint hearted. This is a big - right around 15% alcohol - California red that escapes from the glass with an explosion of super-ripe red and black fruit plenty of spicy oak. It’s always an exotic flavor profile from an exotic blend:  In 2012 46% Zinfandel, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, 18% Petite Sirah, and 2% Charbono. The super-ripe fruit comes from some of California’s top vineyards, including Heitz Ink Grade, Korte, York Creek, Black Sears and Stagecoach.

Like you, we don’t get to taste Prisoner until Halloween, but winemaker Jen Beloz’s notes are sure to make your mouth water!  “The wine has a deep ruby red hue that is framed in rich crimson. Aromas of black cherry and plum, surrounded by roasted co¬ffee beans and vanillin oak accents. The entry is powerful and lush with favors of Bing cherry, blueberry and cocoa. Soft and velvety tannins round out the finish making this wine approachable and inviting.”

"Ripe, jammy, sweet and loaded with toasty oak. Subtle this is not, loaded with flavor, offering notes of black cherry, chocolate, licorice and cinnamon spice. Should appeal to fans of the style. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono. Drink now through 2018."Wine Spectator 90 points

Keplinger Lithic 2011 Product #27919 (In Stock)
Keplinger Lithic 2011 Keplinger Lithic 2011

Helen Keplinger continues to be one of Napa's "hottest" winemakers, building on her experience working in Priorat and in California at Bryant and with the likes of Heidi Barrett, Kathy Joseph, and David Abreu. We're fortunate to get a few cases of her Lithic blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, and this year's Lithic is as perfumed and layered as ever, with a captivating vibrancy and juicier personality than in the past.  Aromas of violets, mineral dust, anise, and blue and black berry fruits lead to a mouthful of black fruit, licorice, and spice that unfurls with air.  Lovely tannin here in a difficult vintage - broad but very fine grained and plush.  A focused mineral streak recalls the Chateauneuf du Pape this mirrors, but the fruit and flavors are distinctively California.  Long, lovely, and limited - just 230 cases made.

"Dark red cherries, menthol, tobacco and savory herbs are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2011 Lithic. Even with all of its early appeal, the Lithic boasts tremendous depth and has the pedigree to develop beautifully for a number of years. The polished finish is striking, but today, the Lithic is showing just a hint of its potential. The blend is 46% Grenache, 31% Mourvedre and 23% Syrah, with the Mourvedre and Syrah clearly dominating today. All of the fruit was sourced from Shake Ridge Vineyard in Amador."  Antonio Galloni 92 points

"Edgy and rustic, with a dense, potent core of road tar, dark berry, black licorice and raspberry, this is a vital young wine that begs for cellaring, delivering purity, complexity and density. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Best from 2015 through 2028. 230 cases made."Wine Spectator 94 points

Keplinger Sumo 2011 Product #27920 (In Stock)
Keplinger Sumo 2011 Keplinger Sumo 2011

Helen's husband/partner DJ calls this Petite Sirah blend the "velvet sledghamer."  About right, I think! Delicious now with air, but even better next year.  Just 190 cases made of this ripe, perfectly balanced, explosive red.

"Keplinger's 2011 Sumo tastes like a young wine right out of tank, such is the purity of its fruit. Cloves, menthol, tar, licorice and blueberries meld together in an intense, inky Petite Sirah loaded with class. I would drink the 2011 early and cellar the 2010 for another few years. A juicy, expressive finish rounds out this soft, beautifully contoured wine. In 2011 Sumo is 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah and 4% Viognier."  Antonio Galloni 93 points
