Roquevale Alentejano Ossa Rose 2015 Product #31063 (In Stock)
Roquevale Alentejano Ossa Rose 2015 Roquevale Alentejano Ossa Rose 2015

Here's something a bit exotic in the pink wine category - a Portuguese rose made from native grapes Castelão, Trincadeira and Aragonez.  It's a "direct press" rose, meaning the grapes were grown for pink wine production, were crushed and allowed to start fermentation before the bubbling juice was pressed off the skins and into tank.  A bit darker than most roses from the south of France, but no less deliciously refreshing.  Full and frankly fruity aromas of cherry and berry with a hint of crushed flowers and citrus.  The cherry/berry fruit floods your palate, picking up complexity from a touch of citrus pith bitterness that flows right on through the juicy, fresh, finish.  A fun Portuguese party pink you'll love sipping and sharing all summer long.

Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Product #29373 (In Stock)
Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011 Portada Winemakers Selection Tinto Douro 2011

Number 8 on Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buys of 2014!   The grape blend here is a good example of why folks find Portuguese wine intimidating:  Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelão, Pinot Noir, and Touriga Nacional are in there somewhere!  The winemaking is pretty straight ahead, with fermentation in tank and just a little time in barrel and bottle before release.  But there’s a nice touch of complexity to the plump, juicy, aromas and flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and tangy plum fruit and accents of crushed violets and lavender.  At just 12.5% abv, you can enjoy this solo with a chill or pair it everything from fried chicken to grilled tuna or burgers.

"A dark colored, dense wine that is rich and firmly structured. Aged in wood, it holds flavors of plum and berry fruits balanced with a fresh acidity. This is a wine for aging, its structure a powerful statement. Drink from 2014.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2012 Product #30389 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2012 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2012

If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.

As Wine Enthusiast notes, this has the balance and structure to improve steadily over the next 5-8 years, so don’t hesitate to load up and hold some – if you can!  Because right now you’ll find it hard to resist on cold night by itself or paired with robust winter foods like stews, burgers, sausages, or – if you’re in the mood for the full Portuguse experience – grilled octopus!

“Structured, this oozes blackberry fruitiness as well as a balanced layer of dry tannins. The wine is fruity and rich while keeping its elegance. A core of tannins and fresh acidity in the fruit promise that this wine will age.” Wine Enthusiast 92 points

Portal Do Fidalgo Alvarinho 2015 Portal Do Fidalgo Alvarinho 2015

The past two vintages reviewed pulled down 92 points from WE - this stunning 2015 is far better.  Technically a Vinho Verde, it's really a stunning Portuguese take on Spain's Albarino grape.  Explosive flavors of white peach, orange and apricot coat your palate and drive on through a dry peach and flower blossom finish.  Seriously refreshing and satisfying, this is a "do not miss" winner!

Reguengo De Melgaco Vinho Verde Alvarinho 2015 Product #31072 (In Stock)
Reguengo De Melgaco Vinho Verde Alvarinho 2015 Reguengo De Melgaco Vinho Verde Alvarinho 2015

BIG flavor and fun here, with explosive orange and tangerine citrus, tropical fruit and a touch of apricot tang.  Very long, very delicious.

"The 2015 Alvarinho is dry and comes in at 13% alcohol. This is nicely structured, but it is most impressive for its expressive fruit. Ripe and delicious, with a solid mid-palate and crispness on the edges, this is a beautifully crafted Alvarinho. It should hold for several years, but it is hard to resist now."Wine Advocate 90 points

Conceito Branco 2011 Product #29112 (In Stock)
Conceito Branco 2011 Conceito Branco 2011

Rita first came to international attention with the 2007 edition of this white, and Wine Advocate once again named this their top Douro white in 2011.  It’s a field blend of of Rabigato, Côdega de Larinho, Códega, Viosinho and Gouveio from an ancient, pre-phylloxera, vineyard in the cool Teja Valley, far above the Douro River.  Rita fermented and aged the just ripe fruit for 10 months in a blend of French and Caucasian oak, about 40% new.

This takes the bright, fresh, fruit flavors of the Contraste Branco and adds a layer of white Burgundy sophistication and complexity.  Aromas of apple, apricot, grilled pineapple, smoke, crushed chervil, and wet stones.  The flavors follow the nose and add creamy vanilla, toasted nut, and brown spice and find the crushed fresh herb coming forward.  An anise note emerges on the back and carries through to the long, broad, and super-fresh finish that just keeps pumping out juicy acids, bitter citrus pith, and salty mineral flavors for a minute or more. A stunner for now and years to come.

"More minerally and longer than the Contraste and a little more concentrated and with greater ageing potential. Citrus, grapefruit, mineral and really good length. Sophisticated with a line of freshness and drive."  JancisRobinson.com 17/20

"If the ‘11 Contraste is sunny and exhilarating, this adds the solidity and power, while remaining fresh, pure and bright. It has oak, but it seems so fresh that I can taste the tank. It ends with a gripping finish. The ‘10 may brood a bit more, but this may well be the best wine here and I’ll be interested to see how it ages. It combines that youthful exuberance with fine depth and solidity. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 93 points

"This rich, wood-aged wine is balanced and stylish. It shows the great potential for white wine in the Douro, with its panoply of flavors ranging from creamed apple to white peach, with a hint of herb. It’s a fruity offering that will age for at least 3–4 years."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Conceito Tinto 2011 Product #29111 (In Stock)
Conceito Tinto 2011 Conceito Tinto 2011

The aromas in Rita's breakthrough Douro Valley dry red fuse the dark, intensely ripe, scents of perfectly ripe wild berries and black cherry with barrel notes of vanilla, cedar, and spice to create something astonishing - this smells like the very best, most exotic, beef stock you can possibly imagine.  The wild and captivating complexity of the nose carries through in the mouth to deliver a manage of flavors I can list - black raspberry, plum, licorice, sweet spice, anise, coffee, bitter chocolate, warm stones - but that I can't really describe. The blend of sweet and savory aromas and flavors is unique, as is the level of intense minerality that shines through from first sniff through the lip-smacking finish.  A kick of black cherry juice, coffee, and sweet spice pop out right at the back of the palate, adding an element of fun to this serious, sophisticated, and stunning wine.  An achievement, but only 830 cases made.

"Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz. Fragrant dark fruit not obscured by the oak. Tight and chewy and both pure and complex. Quite a grip but has a generous softness of fruit to fill out the structure. Long."  Jancisrobinson.com 17+/20

"In many respects, this puts it all together for the winery. On first taste, it doesn't seem notably different, but it does everything well and seems more or less without flaws. It is elegant, but it doesn't fade. It has the lifted feel of the 2012, but more focus. It shows more concentration than the 2007, and so on. Graceful in the mid-palate, it shows off that subtle sort of concentration that the 2011 vintage seems to provide--tightly wound, but never jammy--together with a well-balanced but rather serious backbone. It was still tannic, vibrant and persistent after hours of aeration, yet it never seems ponderous. The fruit is also fresh and lively, making it really easy to adore. It should continue to age well for the foreseeable future and it will certainly improve with several more years of cellaring. This in time will be a great food wine." Wine Advocate 95 points
