Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012 Product #28770 (In Stock)
Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012 Dom De Eguren Protocolo Tinto 2012

Here's the kind of value that made Spain famous in the international wine world, but that seems to have vanished in recent years. It's 100% Tempranillo done in tank that, as a Robert Parker said of the 2011, is "a delicious, quasi-fruit bomb offering loads of berry fruit, roasted herb, lavender and earthy, peppery notes."  A fine party or backyard cookout red at a very compelling price.

Figaro Tinto Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29106 (In Stock)
Figaro Tinto Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Figaro Tinto Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Another example of the kind of old-vine wine value you only find in less well-known corners of Spain.  Here, it's 30 year and older Garnacha from near the town of Calatayud in Aragon.  Ripe fruit, cool fermentation, and a short stay in oak give a wonderfully fresh, fruity, and fun wine at a super value price.  We loved the purity of the black raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors and how the wine is focused in the mid-palate before fanning out over a broad, juicy, finish.  The touch of pepper on the nose and sweet spice at the end is an extra bonus and lifts this from "very good" to "seriously yummy."

“Bright violet color. Spicy blackberry and fresh flowers on the nose, given lift by a peppery nuance. Juicy and brisk on the palate, with clean dark berry flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Closes on a juicy note, with sneaky tannins and good focus.”International Wine Cellar 88 points

“This 2012 Tinto (100% Grenache) offers uplifted, fragrant notes of licorice, lavender and black cherry jam. Intense and spicy with medium to full body, and not a hard edge to be found, this is a classic, seductive, consumer-friendly Grenache to drink over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013 Product #28690 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2013

Stunning blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, and long one of our – and Robert Parker’s – “go to” wineries for great value reds, this Campo de Borgia Garnacha specialist has outdone itself with a brilliant 2012.  A perfect bottle to serve to a crowd or sip on its own after a hard day, this will also sing with anything from salmon to burgers or roast pork.

"Deep ruby. Cherry, dark berries, vanilla and peppery spices on the fragrant nose. Smooth, pliant and juicy, showing a subtle spiciness to its open-knit blackberry and cherry flavors. Finishes smoky, broad and persistent, leaving dark berry and black pepper notes behind. Lots of wine for the money here, as is normal for this bottling."International Wine Cellar 89 points

"Another steal in terms of wine value is the 2013 Garnacha, which is a 15,000-case blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo that is fermented and aged in stainless steel. This special cuvée has been a huge success commercially for many years. Lots of strawberry, black cherry and fruitcake aromas intermixed with hints of earthy, sandy notes jump from the glass of this 2013. It reveals vivid, exuberant fruit, medium body, super purity and a wonderful, fresh, lively, boisterous, satisfying style. This Grenache fruit-bomb should be drunk over the next several years."Wine Advocate 89 points

Terra Do Castelo Godello Ribeiro 2012 Product #27545 (In Stock)
Terra Do Castelo Godello Ribeiro 2012 Terra Do Castelo Godello Ribeiro 2012

Wines from this verdant corner of Northeastern Spain were shipped to England in the middle-ages, but the vineyards were virtually abandoned after phylloxera in the 1880s.  100 years later, Ribeiro began its resurgence, offering crisp, mineral-laced, wines from Albarino, Treixadura and, increasingly, Godello.  Like Ribeiro itself, the Godello grape was nearly extinct in the 1970s before growers rediscovered its ability to deliver ripe fruit, crisp acids, fine minerality, and a clear sense of place.

While the grape takes well to wood aging in warmer climates, our favorite examples are wines like this – crisp, clean, and super fresh whites made all in tank.  We love how Terra Do Castelo’s version delivers all of Godello’s and the region’s stony minerality with a big dose of ripe pineapple, tangerine, and lime zest fruit.  It’s a fantastic wine to keep on hand pairing with spring salads, shellfish, or even ham as well as for sipping by itself.  At these prices, it’s a wine to stock up on and enjoy this Spring, Summer, and Fall!

“This Godello is light, fruity and offers nice lime and apple aromas. It’s linear, minerally and has a true slate feel, then stony flavors of tangerine and ripe peach take over. A juicy, pure finish tops it off.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012 Product #27782 (In Stock)
Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012 Paso A Paso Tempranillo La Mancha 2012

A straight-ahead, lightly oaked, Tempranillo with good richness, plenty of fruit and spice, and enough acidity to stay fresh.

"Aged for six months in two- and three-year-old French oak. Bright purple. Smoky cherry and dark berries on the fragrant nose. Lush and open-knit, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and boysenberry flavors accented by a hint of cracked pepper. Finishes smooth and spicy, with a hint of tannins and good persistence."International Wine Cellar 89 points

“The 2012 Paso a Paso Tempranillo is even better. Aged six months in neutral French oak, it displays a savory, slightly fleshier style than its organic cousin. A sleeper of the vintage, it reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of black currants and jammy black cherries, excellent purity and texture, and a medium-bodied finish. This delicious red is an outrageous value. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2013 Product #29080 (In Stock)
Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2013 Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2013

The review pretty mush says it all

"Deep ruby. Spicy cherry and red berries on the perfumed nose, with a floral note adding complexity. Youthfully taut and nicely delineated, offering fresh red and dark fruit flavors and a touch of candied violet. Finishes with brisk cherry and anise qualities, dusty tannins and a touch of refreshing bitterness. Outstanding bang for the buck here."International Wine Cellar 89 points

Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29496 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012

This long-time favorite value for pizza, pasta, and parties is better than ever this release.  Juicy fun.

"The 2012 Tres Ojos Garnacha contains 15% Tempranillo (I wonder why), and unoaked cuvée of 200,000 bottles that matures in vat for at least seven months before bottling. Of course the 200,000 bottles are not bottled at once, so you might find some differences from lot to lot; what I tasted was a very honest, fresh and fruit-driven red with aromas of cherries, garrigue and thyme with a medium-bodied palate, some weight and tannins that would do better with food. This is a red that sells for a song."Wine Advocate 88 points

Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Product #28229 (In Stock)
Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011 Bielsa Campo De Borja Garnacha 2011

As Steve Tanzer said about the 2010, "This wine isn't shy about the fruit." From dry-farmed, old vines, grown in the scrubby vineyards of Campo de Borgia, this delivers a huge mouthful of intense Garnacha flavors:  black and red raspberry, black and Bing cherry, licorice, white pepper and more.  Plenty of ripeness, especially on the back where a kirsch-like flavor emerges, but it's also savory black pepper and fine lift and energy. Finishes dry and even a little floral with dark berry lingering on.  Fun to sip; great with any rustic food.  A steal.

Casal De Arman Ribeiro Tinto 2012 Product #28896 (In Stock)
Casal De Arman Ribeiro Tinto 2012 Casal De Arman Ribeiro Tinto 2012

Glacia's Ribeiro region is becoming known for complex, vibrant, whites but this unique red really impressed us.  It's a blend of Brancellao, Souson and Caino Longo aged for nine months in stainless steel vats. The aromas and flavors are cool and exotic, with intense strawberry and cherry fruit at center stage and accents of clove, licorice, and black pepper.  A note of crumbled tobacco makes you think of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc, but this is more fruit-filled and very, very, delicious.

Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2012 Product #29159 (In Stock)
Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2012 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2012

Another great vintage here for this very "New World" Spanish Garnacha.

"Expressive aromas of cherry compote, blueberry, lavender and peppery spices. Plush, pliant, round and seamless on the palate, offering smoky blueberry, mineral and dark chocolate flavors complicated by suggestions of candied flowers and licorice. Finishes long and sweet, with soft tannins and repeating spiciness. There's a lot of wine here for the money."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"Bodegas Alto Moncayo started in 2001 as a collaboration between importer Jorge Ordoñez, American importer Dan Phillips, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and others. Located near the town of Borja, the 210 acres of vineyards are head-pruned, old Grenache vines planted at 3,000 feet above sea level in poorly nourished soils of slate, clay, chalk and quartzite. They make a number of cuvées, the most famous being the more expensive Alto Moncayo and the Aquilon. Their inexpensive offering is the 2012 Veraton, a 100% Grenache aged in 60% new French and 40% American oak for 17 months before being bottled without filtration. It is a powerful, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal red boasting a dense purple color, and a sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, lavender, licorice and earth notes intermixed with a touch of new oak. Stylistically, this is a modern, massively intense, rich wine that over-delivers in many ways. However, it is not for consumers looking for shy, restrained and delicate wines. It should drink well for a decade."Wine Advocate 93 points

Palacio De Fefinanes Albarino 1583 Rias Baixas 2013 Product #28665 (In Stock)
Palacio De Fefinanes Albarino 1583 Rias Baixas 2013 Palacio De Fefinanes Albarino 1583 Rias Baixas 2013

Current owner Juan Gil de Araujo Gonzales de Careaga created this unique and luxurious Albarino as an homage to Gonzalo Sarmiento Valladares, Viscount of Fefinanes, who was born in 1583 and built the castle that holds today’s winery in the early 1600s. You’ll find plenty of classic Albarino fruit, minerality, and freshness here but also another layer of complexity and interest from careful fermentation and brief aging in wood cask.

The aromas here are compelling - spicy, lightly smoky, scents of apricot, pear, orange and honeydew melon with touches of creamy vanilla and anise.  Fantastic balance in the mouth with a core of sliced lime, peach, and apricot fruit surrounded by just a bare hint of oak and loads of saline mineral.  The finish is super detailed, precise, and long with wood grilled fruit and zesty lemon-lime acidity sailing on and on.  As Wine Advocate said of the 2011, "Albarino from Rias Baixas does not come much better than this."

"Smoky pear and peach pit on the nose, with suave floral, mineral and honey qualities emerging with aeration; I don't sense that oak. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering pliant orchard fruit and orange pith flavors braced by vibrant minerality. Firm, juicy and pure on the penetrating finish, which shows excellent clarity and mineral-driven persistence."International Wine Cellar 92 points

Love Clio?  Try this!  A powerhouse wine made from 85% Monastrell and 15% Cabernet, aged in 80% French and 20% American oak.

"(85% monastrell and 15% cabernet sauvignon; malo and aging in 80% French and 20% American oak): Opaque purple. Explosive black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by notes of licorice, Indian spices and floral oils. Rich and expansive but showing unlikely finesse thanks to bright acidity. Sweet blueberry and cassis flavors stain the palate and linger on a very long, intensely spicy, focused finish. Australian winemaker Chris Ringland consults here."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"Expressive flavors of black cherry, mulled plum, dark chocolate, licorice and mineral mingle in this harmonious red. Offers a sleek texture and a solid structure, matching power with elegance. Impressive, in the modern style. Drink now through 2021. 975 cases made."Wine Spectator 94 points
