Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Product #29496 (In Stock)
Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012 Tres Ojos Old Vines Garnacha Calatayud 2012

Here's an outstanding value from little-known Calatayud in Spain that will do just as well on the bar for a party as it will with roasted meats or robust sausage.  It's based on 85% Garnacha from 40-50 year old bush-trained vines that have to dig deep into their non-irrigated soils for water and nutrients.  About 7% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo add structure and some black fruit notes and a dash of Syrah give meaty spice.

The 2011 edition was one of our best-selling red value favorites of both 2013 and 2014, and the new vintage cranks up the intensity and depth even more.  The aromas are robust and fresh, with generous dollops of raspberry, violet and spice (just from the grapes - no oak used at all!).  The flavors follow with more raspberry and sweet cherry fruit, hints of dark chocolate and more spice.  With air, the fruit gets darker and richer, but a touch of citrusy acid and light, crisp, tannins keeps things fresh even as complex flavors of balsamic and baked strawberry linger.  Supple enough for a party, structured enough for most anything you’ll pull off the grill, and a steal of a deal, too!

"A very honest, fresh and fruit-driven red with aromas of cherries, garrigue and thyme with a medium-bodied palate, some weight and tannins that would do better with food. This is a red that sells for a song."Wine Advocate 88 points

Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013 Product #30784 (In Stock)
Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013 Bodega Nino Jesus Figaro Tinto 2013

The 2013 Figaro is a great introduction to the old vines of Spain's Calatayud and just an all-around great “House Red” to enjoy this year.  The low-yielding old Garnacha vines give this wonderful ripeness and concentration, with big aromas and flavors of baked strawberry, dark black cherry, dried flowers, and cracked pepper.  The cool nights and fermentation in steel tank lock in the fruit and keep it fresh and vibrant, while a short stay in oak barrels rounds off the edges and adds a lovely burst of sweet spice on the juicy, lightly chewy, finish.

Drink it cool and you’ll love the almost sangria-like fruitiness.  Let it come up to room temperatures, and watch this fill your mouth with generous fruit and spice and pair perfectly with most any meat, fish, or vegetable coming off the grill.  A great all-purpose red to enjoy anytime!

Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2014 Product #29984 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2014 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2014

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2014 edition harkens back to the extra layer of richness, ripeness and power that elevated the ’11 to 90 point status (vs. the “regular” 89 points Parker gives it).  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

In 2014, the fruit returns to the darker shades found in the 2011, with loads of juicy black raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors with accents of crushed violets, white pepper, and sweet spice. It's smooth and supple on the palate with mouthfilling heft and juicy, mouthwatering, freshness.  It finishes smooth and with light, ripe, tannins, leaving notes of blackberry, pepper, and spice lingering behind. A whole lot of wine - and fun - for the money!

Pares Balta Mas Petit Penedes 2013 Product #30602 (In Stock)
Pares Balta Mas Petit Penedes 2013 Pares Balta Mas Petit Penedes 2013

From Spain's Penedes region, this is a great everyday red made from organicly grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha grapes.  Fermented in tank and aged 7 months in used French Oak.  It's more like a Loire Valley Chinon than most Spanish wines, with plump currant and red cherry fruit and accents of crushed herb, smoke and spice.  Rich enough for something off the grill, but also fun by itself with a light chill - a Spanish bistro red!

Big and rich with plenty of power and a nice floral note, too.

"This 100% Bobal (60 to 80-year-old vines), aged four months in concrete, represents a terrific buy. It possesses excellent delineation as well as lots of blueberry and sweet and sour cherry fruit intermixed with notions of chalk and strawberries. Medium-bodied and fruity with attractive texture as well as purity, it should drink well for several years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Espelt Garnacha Emporda Old Vines 2013 Product #30278 (In Stock)
Espelt Garnacha Emporda Old Vines 2013 Espelt Garnacha Emporda Old Vines 2013

A bold, juicy, red that finishes smooth and rich.

"This stunning custom cuvee from Eric Solomon was made with the help of Frenchman Jean-Marc Lafage. From granite soils around Spain’s Costa Brava, just two kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, some of the grapes in this wine come from old vines dating back to 1900. The 2013 Garnacha Old Vines (100% Grenache aged four months in new and used French oak) boasts remarkable intensity as well as richness along with lots of strawberry, wild, briery mountain fruit and hints of spice, flowers, underbrush and Mediterranean herbs. The sweet tannin, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and luscious personality have resulted in a gorgeous wine to enjoy over the next several years. Happily, 14,000 cases have been imported to the U.S."Wine Advocate 90 points

Antxiola Txakoli 2015 Product #30890 (In Stock)

Txakoli is a fresh, zippy style of wine from Spain’s Basque country.  Like Vinho Verde, it’s just slightly fizzy, but not fully sparkling.  But unlike its Portuguese cousin, it’s bone dry, bracingly tart, and very mineral, with aromas of lime skin and something fresh and salty reminiscent of the beach.  This great value Txakoli is a natural match for fresh seafood - or try it with sushi!

Bodegas Virgen De La Sierra Macabeo Albada 2015 Product #30902 (In Stock)

Better known under it's Rioja name of Viura, Macabeo flies under the radar as a main or blending grape in white Rioja, Cava, and other regional wines.  British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson has dubbed it "the Cinderella grape" in recognition of the way Macabeo is coming out of the shadows now and being allowed to shine on it's own.

This is a fine example from 35 year-old vines in Calatayud, not far from Rioja. You'll find Macabeo's signature notes of peach, orange, and almond here lifted by a note of juicy lemon.  Rich and creamy on the palate with good weight and a nice, refreshing, dusty minerality on the generous finish.  This will be especially delicious with fresh water fish done with butter and nuts or even with richer dishes like salmon.

Finca Valldosera Cava Brut Nature NV Product #23944 (In Stock)
Finca Valldosera Cava Brut Nature NV Finca Valldosera Cava Brut Nature NV

The price-quality-ratio here is just absurd. Toasty and yeasty on the nose then fantastically complex apple and golden fruit flavors with plenty of yeast/bread dough flavors.  Stunning levels of fruit for a no-dosage wine and the kind of creamy, silky, texture normally only found in $40 Champagne.  Super friendly, you can drink this like Prosecco if you like, but it's more than sophisticated enough to warrant close attention.

"Finca Valldosera is a boutique producer (5000 cases total production) of high-class Cava. All three of the above Cavas are Brut Nature meaning they have received zero dosage. The Non-Vintage Brut Nature is a blend of 45% Xarel-lo, 30% Macabeo, 10% Parellada, 10% Chardonnay, and 5% Subirat Parent with 10% of the Xarel-lo barrel-fermented and aged. The wine remained sur lie for 24 months and was hand-riddled. It offers up an enticing nose of brioche, smoked nuts, and assorted white fruits. Displaying small persistent bubbles, a smooth texture, and excellent balance, this tasty Cava over-delivers in a big way."Wine Advocate 90 points

Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013 Product #30492 (In Stock)
Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013 Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013

"Even better is the 2013 Solanera is a “Vinas Viejas” that differs from the Castano (100% Monastrell), as this blend is 70% Monastrell, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Grenache, aged 10 months in French and American oak. Another difference from the Hecula is that it was aged equal parts in tank and the other half in French oak. The Solanera, which comes from relatively high-altitude limestone soils at 900 meters, has a dense purple color, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with crushed chalk, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, density and richness. The oak is well concealed by the lavish fruit–the wine just amazing. Drink it over the next 2-3 years, as these powerhouses are best consumed in their exuberant and extroverted youth."Wine Advocate 92 points

The name translates to, "It is what it is," an expression used to shrug off worries and enjoy life today.  And this juicy, ripe, Garnacha is certainly something to enjoy.  Generous aromas and flavors of crushed raspberry and dark cherry shine in this deeply concentrated red from 40+ year-old vines.  Light tannins give enough support for food, but don't get in the way of delicious solo sipping.

Want to have a little fun?  Serve the Finca Valldosera Cava MS 4.7 Brut Nature blind to a Champagne lover.  They'll swear it's a top quality NV Champagne - and probably won't believe you when you tell them what you paid! Stunningly sophisticated, you'll find classic Champagne notes of brioche and toast plus notes of fennel and licorice.  Clean, crisp, and oh-so-elegant, this dances on the palate and delivers a long, complex, finish laden with toast and a hint of licorice. The beautiful color and fine bead keep you thinking Champagne.  The review below is from a releases ago, but still spot on!

"The Non-Vintage MS 4.7 Gran Reserva Brut Nature is the same blend as the Brut Nature cuvee but was selected from the estate’s best vineyards and spent 30 months sur lie. A bit deeper in color and more refined aromatically, it reveals an alluring palate of lemon-lime, toasted almonds, and floral notes. Mouth-filling and impeccably balanced, this superb Cava is an outstanding value meant for drinking over the next 2-3 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

Bodegas Volver Triga Alicante 2011 Product #28979 (In Stock)
Bodegas Volver Triga Alicante 2011 Bodegas Volver Triga Alicante 2011

Love Clio?  Try this!  A powerhouse wine made from 85% Monastrell and 15% Cabernet, aged in 80% French and 20% American oak.

"(85% monastrell and 15% cabernet sauvignon; malo and aging in 80% French and 20% American oak): Opaque purple. Explosive black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by notes of licorice, Indian spices and floral oils. Rich and expansive but showing unlikely finesse thanks to bright acidity. Sweet blueberry and cassis flavors stain the palate and linger on a very long, intensely spicy, focused finish. Australian winemaker Chris Ringland consults here."International Wine Cellar 92 points

"The 2011 Triga is a blend of old vine Monastrell from five old vineyards in the Salinas, Umbría and La Sima mountains. It includes some 15% Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1981 in Sierra Salinas, all from chalky soils. Only the grapes from their oldest vineyards are used for this wine that was fermented in 5,000-kilo stainless-steel vats and went through malolactic and 20-month aging in oak barriques (mostly French, with 10% American). This is a super selection of the best barrels they have, and less than half of the barrels make it to the final blend. The nose has a combination of black fruit and Mediterranean herbs with well-integrated oak, good harmony and elegance. The palate is medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins, good freshness and persistence with chalky sensations that stick to your teeth, graphite flavors and a warm finish. It's an intense wine, powerful and Mediterranean, truthful to its birthplace and vintage, quite fresh for the year. This wine was released one year ago, but some bottles are still available in the market. If you like Mediterranean, ripe and powerful wines, you should grab this as the price is great for the quality."Wine Advocate 93 points

"Expressive flavors of black cherry, mulled plum, dark chocolate, licorice and mineral mingle in this harmonious red. Offers a sleek texture and a solid structure, matching power with elegance. Impressive, in the modern style. Drink now through 2021. 975 cases made."Wine Spectator 94 points
